IMovie 08 help

I have one large movie file that I'm trying upload to YouTube. Unfortunately, the clip is over 15:00 so it's not getting accepted. I'm trying to cut the clip in two and export the clips as seperate files, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do that. I cut the clips, but that's as far as I've gotten. Is what I'm trying to do even possible, and if not, is there another way I can accomplish this? Would there be a way to delete part of the file entirely in iMove and perform that twice for each section so I can export it? Any suggestions would be great.

Go to the Project Library View so you can see all your projects in a list.
Select the Project and click FILE/DUPLICATE. Create a couple of Duplicates of your Project.
Give each a name, like MY PROJECT PART 1 and MY PROJECT PART 2.
For the Part 1 Project, open it and delete the second half.
For the part 2 project, open it and delete the first half.
I haven't used iMovie 08 in several years, but I think that will work.

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?

Where is imovie 11 help?

I installed imovie 11 today...clicked on help...there is no 'help' as I have come to expect. Nothing comes up in the help screen??? On my macbook with imovie 09, help works just fine.

(I posted this on the iphoto forum but I'm copying it here in case anyone else has this problem and only looks in the imovie thread)
My faith in Apple is restored. I just got off the phone with Apple and they solved the 'no help menus' problem after going 'one step up' to a senior engineer. The guys were great, and they spent a full, patient half hour with me.
Here's what to do:
Go to your 'home' and go to library. In library, scroll down to preferences. In preferences, find .com.apple.help.plist, com.apple.helpviewer.plist, and maybe you also have com.apple.helpui.plist. Drag these two (or maybe three) items out of the library and onto your desktop. Then restart your mac. Voila! Your help menus are restored (I really hope it works for you!). Once you've ascertained you have your help menus back you can drag these three items to the trash. Good Luck!

IMovie HD "help" no longer works

After importing the second video of my movie (from old 8mm film, put on disc) to edit, my iMovie "Help" no longer works. Worked after the first but not after the second. Says there is still 184GB available.

I don't know whether this will help as it is really connected with the MacOSX Help Viewer but it may be worth a try. It is the section entitled "Reset the Help Viewer":-

Photos going black in iMovie 11, help!

Hi guys,
first post so please be gentle.
I have a MBA with iPhoto 11 and iMovie 11 runnion Lion, I made a movie with video clips and some photos and all was working fine, photos imported from their event folder in iPhoto.
Now today i decide to add a couple more photos to the movie, in the filmstrip view i can see my photos and give them ken burns etc, however when i look in the movie preview window when it gets to the photo it just has a still from the preceeding video. This is the same if i export the video to itunes etc.
when i try to add a subtitle to the photo normally you can see the photo in the background however now i only see black.
have tried editting the photo alittle in iPhoto as mentioned elsewhere but that doesnt help.

And 7.83Gb on a 60Gb hard. Then I think that there might be problems.
As I use to recommend a minimum of 25Gb free space - and on a MBA with a SSD-drive on 60Gb this will not match.
I wonder if this is at all possibly to get to work. As MBA usually do not have any FireWire connections and then not the possibility to use an external hard disk as Start-Up (Mac OS) HD. It will not boot via USB/USB2.
If You got Thunderbolt - that might work - BUT I don't know if one can boot via this ? (ask at Apple Store)
And if You locate iPhoto library to any other HD - iMovie will not find it.
The needed space is for iMovie and Mac OS temp. files - and they too can not be addressed externally.
One working - but expensive solution is to upgrade the 60Gb drive to a larger one - BUT THIS might be anything from impossibly to EXPENSIVE.
I think this is way out of my arsenal of solutions - Sorry
Hopefully more resourceful people will fill in.

Imovie dvd help needed! Please!

First time making a movie in imovie. I have it exactly the way I want it. Is there a way to burn the way it is in imovie? I really do not want to add any themes from idvd to it. Also, should I make a copy in imovie before trying to do something with it in idvd if there is no way to burn it as the way it is in imovie?

You cannot burn it from iMovie - for one thing it would never fit, nor play anywhere.
You need to let iDVD make a DVD of the movie, and if you don't want any themes:

How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
• create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
• Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
• Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
• Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
• Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
• Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned.If it works save and close myDVDedit.
• Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:

Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results. That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option. Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.

Few days ago I install iLife'08 and tried iMovie, but I got problem(((
It wont let me add any kind of movie files
drag n drop doesn't work
adding movies to iPhoto for browsing them from iMovie library, doesn't help!
So what am I doing wrong??
and there is no '+' sign in left bottom corner of a file

read iM08's manual..
drag'n drop isn't supported in iM08 ..
follow the 'Import...' routine ..
note: iM08 is meant for camcorders (and similiar devices), not a 'all kind of video-files'..

IMovie reinstall help please

i'm not sure how, but i seem to have lost imovie from my macbook (about 1 1/2 years old). it's not listed in the applications folder, and the imovie folder in the library is empty. my questions:
1. if i can find my install disks, can I reinstall imovie without reinstalling the entire operating system?
2. If i can't find my install disks, can i buy iLife '08 and install that? Does it matter if part or all of the original (older version) iLife files are present when installing '08?
3. are there any freeware or free-trial alternatives for a quick fix - i need to transfer video from a miniDV camcorder to my macbook this weekend and i'm not sure how else to do it besides using iMovie.

I am not able to open one particular iMovie project - help!

I spent 18 hours editing a video, then closed imovie so that I can continue the next morning and wanted some memory management to happen. Now when I restart iMovie I can see the project in the list but open project button at the top is grayed out and double clicking puts the cursor on the name as if I want to rename it. Reading some other forums, I have tried deleted some files so that iMovie recalculates/adds those files to the iMovie project but that didnt help as well. I am still able to see the event in the bottom half of the screen with the rejected/chosen parts intact but cant load the project on the timeline.
Previously while loading I had chosen to copy the video files from original location to iMovie project and then move the original files to a USB drive and have confirmed that the mov files iMovie created for the project is there.

The individual file has become corrupted somehow.
Happens often to users who work across a network, opening or saving a Photoshop image file to a server.
You're going to have to resort to your backup.

Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.

Cannot export iMovie project - Help please

When I try to share the project I've worked on for over a week, I get the following ...
However, that event is in the iMovie library.
The only thing that happened differently this time is that I mistakenly deleted the event files from the event library before I exported the project to save disk space. But once I found out I needed the event clips in iMovie in order to share the project, I found out the clips are still in User > Movies > iMovie Events > British Isles Cruise 2013, so I imported them back into my Event Library in iMovie. So the Event and all the clips are back in iMovie, but I'm still getting the above error, as if iMovie doesn't realize the event is still there, and I cannot share or do anything with my project other than view it in iMovie.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I have the same problem with my iPod Touch. But in iPad there is something wrong too. Everytime I go to the appstore, I see "Install" button for iMovie. It shoudn't be there because I updated the iMovie to the last version, you know...
Do you have this kind of problem too? or is there anyone else to have this prob?

Ipad ios imovie deletion help

I've been using imovie on my ipad air to create videos to post on youtube. I couldn't get the imovie upload options to work (I believe this is a format issue), so took to using icapture to upload: Create the video with ios imovie, save the movie then upload with icaptue and it all works fine, video right there on youtube. However, while I can delete the projects easily enough, the saved versions of the movies still exist in the 'video' section of imovie and I can't figure out how to remove/delete them.
Please, if anyone can tell me how, I'd be most grateful.

IMovie Overlay Help Please

I am using iMovie 08 and over the weekend could drag an image over a film clip and it would show the image whilst you could still hear the film sound. Very much the same as an overlay. Now however it simply shows a solid blue line above the film to represent the photo. I can change the duration of this.
The problem is that the image does not show at all. I really want the sound to the video but at parts overlay a still photo. How do I do this please? I have searched these forums and can confirm that I have Advanced Features turned on. I have searched for Overlay in the help menu and go zero results. I need to complete this project very soon so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The above poster was right and wrong in iMovie 08 the split clip option is not there but they is a way around it. I'll give a more detailed instruction. To place multiple image overlay in a project you will need to have multiple clips. Now iMovie doesn't make this easy. You will need to separate the clip by picking sections and highlighting about 0.1 secs then right click and choose delete selection this will automatically split the clip into two. Continue to do this with each section you wish to have a new overlayed image. Then simply drag from iPhoto the image you wish to be overlayed on each clip. i hope this help. The only problem I have is the fact I can not figure out how to add effects to image overlays, this is a feature that need to put back in.

IMovie truble help needed

Hi, posted this once before but did not get a single answer so I'll try again.
Ijust started using iMovie and finished my first project this weekend.
Though when I updated to iMovie'11 the music I added just will not play!
I realized that the songs I added as music no longer is added as music but as voiceover. The wierd part is that one song works just fine and it is still added as music.
Can I change the voiceover (mp3 song that has changed to voiceover) to "music" so that it will play again?
I tried to add the music all over but when I drag and drop the music file it automaticly is added as voice cover.
So even if I can not change the voiceover to music please help me find a solution to why my music becomes voiceover when added!
From what I read I can't Find any one with this problem so I guess that it is not that common, but I do hope some one out there will have the answer to my question! =)

This is difficult in iMovie, and rather easy in Final Cut Pro.
If you would like to avoid the expense of Final Cut Pro, I would recommend this...
1) Sync your takes, make a project out of it, and SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to Apple Intermediate Codec so you retain as much quality as possible. Repeat this for your brother's takes.
2) Now import these AIC movies into iMovie using File/Import/Movies. This will give ou the video and the good audio together in unified clips.
3) Now edit your iMovie project as usual.
