IMovie 08 - Problems referencing audio files.

I have just finished creating a new movie in iMovie 08. The problem I am having is iMovie can't find the audio files I used as a soundtrack for the movie. These audio files are located in my iTunes library. The catch is that all of the music in my iTunes library is stored on another computer, so all of the music files are referenced.
The problem began when I had to turn off the other computer for updates, while I still had iMovie open. Mistakenly I forgot to eject the other computer as it was connected as a server to my Mac. Of course iMovie can no longer find the audio files because they are offline.
Well, when I turned the other computer back on and remounted it as a server, iMovie would no longer play the audio files in my movie. I can still access them through the music tab in iMovie, and they play perfectly.
I have even restarted iMovie and my Mac multiple times.
I really don't want to have to redo all of the music for my movie. If anyone can tell me how to "re-reference" audio files in iMovie, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

Try post on the iMovie forum is my best advice.

  • IMovie problems importing .mov files

I just purchased a new iMac and a new camera (which claims it is Mac compatible and iMovie compatible). Unfortunately, for some reason iMovie is not letting me import any of the movies I create with the camera. I noticed this is a common problem, and the fix seems to be to download an earlier version of iMovies '06, but that seems crazy. Are there any other options to get my movies from my camera into iMovies?

Compatible at which level? Muxed MPEG-1 files can be played by QT applications but cannot be converted by them to other compression formats without losing the audio and cannot be edited by them. Would you call this a compatible format or an incompatible format?

Unlike older versions of iMovie, iMovie '08 does not convert files as part of the "Finder" file importation process. Therefore, if the file you are trying to import cannot be edited "natively" (i.e., both audio and video content), it will not import them at all. On the other hand, iMovie '06 does convert files as part of the import process and it will automatically convert the content to an edit compatible compression format if it can.
Are there any other options to get my movies from my camera into iMovies?
Probably. It all depends on the compression format contained in the file. For instance, many Sony cameras make MPEG-1 video files. These files can be converted to an editable format (like DV, AIC, MJEPEG, MPEG-4, H.264, etc.) with a free third-party, MPEG-based application like MPEG Streamclip. Kodak MPEG4/µ-Law files become compatible if you simply pass through the video and convert the audio to AAC using the "Movie to MPEG-4" export option. Casio MJPEG/DVI ADPCM wil import if you simply extract the WAV audio, convert it AAC (or other compatible audio format), and re-merge it with your original video track.
This is a Bug in iMovie8. I could NOT import .mov files from my Kodak easyshare Z612 camera into iMovie8 as all the .mov files were greyed out.
Its not a bug if that is what it is supposed to do. If you check the compression format, you will likely find this camera also uses the MPEG4/µ-Law combination mentioned above. Just because the compressed data is in an MOV file container, does not mean it can be edited in that "native" compression format. If you check the audio format of your files imported to iMovie '06, you should find the µ-Law audio was changed to AAC. Whether done automatically by iMovie '06 or manually by you, the offending compression format had to be changed to one that could be edited before iMovie '08 would accept it.

  • Problems importing audio files in FCP 7.0.1

Has anyone else noticed FCP 7 being much more picky about audio files being imported? MP3s, WAVs & AIFFs that all play on my system or in Quicktime are not being recognized by FCP. The only pattern I can see to these files is they were not created on Macs and may lack certain metadata that FCP expects, but generally, I work under the assumption that if Quicktime can read a file, FCP can too - and that is proving not to be the case.

Thanks for the tip re: JPG v TIFF. And I've done a MP3 -> AIFF conversion now as well.
As it turned out, my problem was not a FCP preferences corruption, but was a matter of where the files came from...we were given a DVD with the still & audio files on them. When I copied those files from the DVD to our Server and then to the Raid hooked up to our Mac, the files would not import. If I went directly from the DVD to the raid, the files imported. Not sure how to make sense of that...but good to be aware of it, and hopefully if anyone else runs into this odd occurrence, this solves it for them...

  • Problem opening audio files

I can't open or download audio files stored on OneDrive using my iPad 2, whereas I have no problems doing either with my iPhone 4s.  both are running under iOS7.1.1.   I have compared settings on both devices but can t spot any differences.

like most full version updates (8 to 9)etc, you can't go back to an earlier version.

I just got my new macbook pro, and cannot play the audio files on the comp. They are .wma files and worked on my previous macbook, but when trying to play on quicktime it says, "not a video file." I tried Flip4Mac but this didn't work. Any suggestions?

  • IMovie problem re: converted files. Also question about rotating a video.

    1. I convereted a .avi file to .mp4 and I still cannot open the file in iMovie, is it because i converted the file? What can I do about this?
    2. Can I rotate a video clip using iMovie? I can't seem to find any software to do this, any help would be appreciated.

    Hi John
    to no: 2
In iMovie as standard - NO
    1. Cxf - Turn Clip - think it is a free plug-in there
    2. QT-pro (in 90-deg steps) but about $20 extra
    3. FCE/P - expencive - but very interesting solution
    4. there's a 4th, free option to rotate video:
goo' ol' Streamclip allows opening of dv-file,
    rotate & shrink (75%) ...

  • Exs problems. Audio files sound strange when spread across keyboard

I just bought a sample pack from the fantom g series and started to import the sounds. When I played them they sounded good in two octaves, but when i ventured farther than that on either side the sound became .. . . well , different. I guess the pitch was changing, but when i went low it sounded like there was a deep filter on it and coming from the depts of ****. On the high side, It sounded very xiolophony ( this is the acoustic grand piano 1 btw ) This would happen if fruity loops too. I set the range to max but it sounds way different if you were playing the fantom, or any instrument for that matter. Is this just " the way it goes " as far as sampling on the exs? or am i missing something.
    Thank you,

I think you should ask this question to the manufacturer of that sample pack.
It is certainly NOT a limitation of the EXS24. For instance, any seriously sampled piano will cover the full eight octaves, each key sampled on multiple velocity levels, and EXS24 will not limit that in any way, in fact, its range is C-2 up to G8, 10 and-a-fifth octaves. So it is the manufacturer (Roland?) that built the instrument that has limited the range of 'm, for whatever reason.

  • Some audio files no longer playing?

I am half way through an imovie project and recently added audio commentry, however some files no longer play also a few now have a yellow warning triangle?
Im assuming the files are now corrupt or something?
really annoying!, anyone have an idea what the problem is??
    Cheers

    Hi
I'm assuming the files are now corrupt or something?
    I don't
Yellow triangle - indicates that the pointer in iMovie to the Audio file used, no longer is valid.
iMovie - DO NOT Copy the audio You put into Your movie project's at all - only points to where You found it.
E.g. - You insert an Audio-CD and use a tune from this in Your movie - then you need a tune from another CD and Ejects the first one =====>  RESULTING IN A YELLOW Triangle - pointer to the tune on Your Audio-CD is broken up on You ejected the CD.
I copy all needed Audio to a dedicated folder first (as I store in a proper place e.g. movie folder in User account) - then I use them into my movie.
The deeper thing is - That there is NO movie in Your Movie Project at all - only a small text document pointing to the material used (video, photos, texts and audio) AND how You want it to be presented AS a Movie.
Only when Shared / Finalized - there is an actual movie created.
This is Non-Destructive non linear Video Editing and how it works.

  • Can't import audio files in FCP after snow leopard update

i've recently updated to snow leopard. and i'm running Final Cut Pro 6.0.6
i opened a .fcp project i created a long time ago. i tried to import a .aif file and final cut crashes. i converted the .aif file to a .mp3 file. tried to import it, and final cut crashed.
i then went and deleted the preference files for final cut pro, reopened final cut, tried importing both files again, it still crashes.
does anyone have a legitimate answer for why this is happening?

    BenB wrote:
1st, FCP does not officially support MP3 audio files, so don't even use them. I'm running FCP 7 on Snow Leopard, no problems with audio files.
1- How are you encoding them? What software is creating these files?
2- Are you running on an external FW800 drive?
3- How much RAM are you running?
And as my final observation is, NEVER run Final Cut Pro 6 on Snow Leopard! Huge no-no! If you upgrade to Snow Leopard, only use FCS3. I've updated lots of systems for my students and clients, and I've seen lots of FCP6 on SL problems.

I agree that you shouldn't use MP3 files with FCP, the manual tells you that somewhere If I recall properly, but it shouldn't cause Final Cut to crash, at least that has never been my experience, it has just caused a skipping problem, or not playing the complete song.
I don't really understand wht a FW800 drive or the amount of RAM have to do with it, it would sure be interesting to hear your comments on that.
However, in all due respect, to make the statement that one should NEVER run Final Cut Pro 6 on Snow Leopard seems pretty "out there" would you be so kind as to provide your rationale for such a drastic statement as that. Has there been anything official from Apple along those lines?

  • NokiaMServer and audio files watchup

I noticed that the NokiaMServer application opens and holds the audio files open. I was concatenating multiple audioclips into one single audio file in my music folder. The process ended after some time to a disk write error. After some retrys and disk checking I started to wonder if the resulting file was opened by some other process, because I couldn't delete or rename it. I found then ProcessExplorer, which pinpointed that NokiaMServer.exe was holding ny result file open. After killing the process the concatenation process went through with no problems. If you have had weird problems with audio files, and I assume that the same might happen also to image files as they are also watched by NokiaMServer, kill the process and retry.

  • Random substitution of audio files

    Hi,
I'm having a peculiar problem with audio files. When I had Express 7, clicking on a audion region brought up the sample editor for that region. When I do that in E8 I often get the audio file of a completely different track. Then, yesterday, I tried to solo a guitar audio track, and E8 played back a synth track even though the guitar track plays back just fine when not soloed. Anyone know what going on here or is this in need of a bug report? Thanks,

  • How to balance the right/left channel of a single audio file?

Hi, this might be an easy procedure but I cannot wrap my head around the following problem - an audio file, that I use as background music in one of my sequences, has uneven right and left channels - they need to be leveled.
How can i do this in PrPro or Soundbooth? I prefer to edit the channel levels of the original file before importing it into my composition. I work with CS5. So far, I've managed to level the R/L chanels by using the 'Balance' knob in the ProP "Audio Mixer" tab . The problem with this method is that the balnce knob adjust the balance of all audio files sitting on the same sound track, whereas I need to adjust the balance of only one of them. Many thanks.

There is a Balance effect as well.

  • Problems with audio on iMovie 10 conversions.

I  just converted my videos from iMovie 7 to iMovie 10.  Now all of the audio on these videos has loud high pitched beeping sounds.  How can I fix this?

Could be corrupted permissions and preferences.
Sometimes permissions and preferences can get corrupted. Whenever iMovie starts acting funny, a common maintenance procedure is to do the following: Delete preferences by closing iMovie and trashing the file com.apple.iMovie.plist found in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility App on your Mac. Open the Disk Utilities window and select the Mac hard drive icon at the top of the side pane at the left. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. When you have repaired permissions and deleted preferences, restart your computer and launch iMovie. iMovie will replace the .plist file that you deleted. Be sure also that you have sufficient free disk space on your hard drive for iMovie to function correctly. 25GB often is recommended by users of this forum. After doing all of the above, relaunch iMovie and see whether you still have the problem.

  • Audio files are missing in iMovie HD 6

I have 10.5 installed and was using iMovie 08. I was having problems exporting a movie, some of the clips were all black. So I downloaded iMovie 06 and all the iLife audio files are missing.
They're still there in '08 but not '06. How do I get them in? Is there a way to import them?

I have never used Screenium nor do I know anything about it, but iMovie 6 prefers footage in .dv format. You may have more success if you use Streamclip to convert the .mov to .dv before importing it into iMovie 6

  • Problems with audio on iMovie HD 6.0.3

I open or create a new iMovie project. I import my film from a digital camcorder into iMovie. Now, when I playback, I hear no audio UNLESS I click out of the working window (for example, if I click onto the desktop/Finder), then the audio is heard. If I click on the working window, I don't hear the audio.
Then what I have to do is to save and close the project, then reopen the project. Then the audio works fine. However, if I edit the project, and try to playback, the audio is gone again until I click out of the working window.
    Sounds strange? Yes. Frustrating. Absolutely.
    Any ideas?
The blue boxes on the right hand side of the working window are checked. It's just that I can't hear anything until I save and close the project and reopen again. Like I said, once I start making edits, I can't hear anything again.
