IMovie 08 to iMovie 08 Project transfer issues

I am trying to move and edit a mostly complete project done in iMovie 08 from my laptop to my desktop. I have copied the .rcproject over but i can't import it. I then put in my iMovie project folder and it still didn't recognize it. Any thoughts? I have seen where 08 has issues with previous versions of iMovie, but that isn't the case here.

Think of your iMovie '08 project as a collection of index cards on file at the library. You remove the cards from the drawer, take them home, and then start searching through your house looking for the books they reference. Unfortunately, all of the referenced books are still back in the library and not in your home so you can't find any of them in your house. Same thing with your project. It is just a list of references pointing to the source content and a set of instructions stating what is to be done to the various sources. Basically all of your reference pointers were "orphaned" as soon as you moved the project file off your original start-up drive. Taking it a step further, you cannot simply copy your source files to the new computer in the hope of reestablishing the previously orphaned resource "paths" since by their very nature, the files modify their own "resource" pointers when copied. While it is possible to use some sort of a resource editor application to go back and manually correct each and every pointer, it is not something I recommend. The normal advice here is "Finish the project on the computer where your started it." Another "rule of thumb" here is to never make a major upgrade to the application in the middle of a project. (I.e., don't switch from iMovie v6 to v7 in the middle of a project.)

ARD is totally unnecessary and inapplicable for your scenario. ARD is a Mac OS X application for managing other Macs and is not useful if you want to connect to a Mac from some other OS. Mac OS X has a VNC client build int, so VNC,  or one of the number of other remote control solutions - LogMeIn, for instance, if they offer a Linux version - is where you want to be looking.

  • Transfer iMovie 08 Project from one computer to another

I created an iMovie 08 project on my macbook pro. The footage came from a digital still camera on video mode as opposed to a video recorder.
I then attempted to transfer the iMovie project to my iMac which I use to sync with my Apple TV.
I transferred the file over my airport extreme network, and moved the file into the iMovie projects folder in my movie folder in my home folder.
It shows up as a project, but does not play. All I see in the window is black screen.
I even imported the raw footage into the iMac so that there was some data there.
My question is whether there is a way to transfer an iMovie project in iMovie 08 from one computer to another.
    Thanks.

The macrumours link just telss you how to move the events which is relatively straightforward.
Alot of advice just seems to rest with leave the projects on your internal drive as they don't take up much space.
However, http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/im08tricks has a description of how to move the projects and then 'fool' imovie into where the projects are stored.
Not very flexible but it does allow you to 'clear' your macbook yet when you restore the sym-link file to the right place and restart imovie you can reconnect to all your old projects and events without yellow triangles of death appearing.
By the by apple needs to sort this out as archiving old projects and events together and preserve the editing is a really basic requirment I think.
PS anyone found out how to merge projects yet? Another basic function that seems to be lacking.

  • Importing from iMovie HD project

I bought a new iMac and i'm importing in iMovie 08 a project from iMovie06.
But i have 2 problems: first not all the clips are imported and second that the clips that are imported are not in the same order of the original projct.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

If in iMovie 06 have a project with 20 clip in iMovie 08 found less clips but everyone is complete. Entire clips are missing.
    1) If you are counting "rendered" clips in the "Project.PKG > Media folder," they are not included in the import. You will have o move them manually if you want them.
    2) If you are counting clips included in the source bin, then I don't know if they are supposed to import or not. (I.e., I don't use the built-in HD import option in iMovie '08.) You can check and see if these are your missing clips. if they are, then add them to the HD project before import and see if they are imported to iMovie '08. If they aren't, then you may need to send a feedback to Apple regarding this issue.
And the order in which are imported is not the same as in the original project
Editing and rendering in an iMovie HD project will change the clip names which, in turn, may re-order the files as the finder "sees" them. (I.e., they are ordered alphabetically in the project media folder.) So, if they are imported in alphabetical order, they would be out of their original "source" or timeline order.

  • I made a duplicate copy of an imovie HD project and when I updated the titles on the copy, the video stuttered . I'm using Snow Leopard OSX. The length of the movie increased unexpedtedly too.

I made a duplicate  of an imovie HD project so I could have two different versions. I tried making the copies both by using File> Duplicate and the Save As command in imovie.
When I changed the title on the copy, the video stuttered when I played it back.  Also the overall length of the movie increased by about 6 seconds throwing off some sync even though the replacement title was exactly the same length in seconds and frames as the one I replaced.
any thoughts how to fix this?
    I'm using OSX 10.6.8.
    thanks.

    *24 December 2009*
    *Dear Mac Users:*
Hello. Thanks to AppleMan1958 for answering my question about how to edit an iMovie project
    on another computer.
Here is a question related to the process of transferring the iMovie '09 project file from my friend's
computer to an external drive so that I can edit that project in iMovie '09 on my MacBook Pro:
How do I know if my Smart Disk FireLite portable external drive is formatted to MAC OS X Extended (journaled)? How I do format this Smart Disk FireLite USBFLB80C to MAC OS X Extended (journaled)?
When I connect the Smart Disk FireLite to my MacBook Pro via USB, open iMovie '09, and select View
Events By Disk or rather "Group Events By Disk," an icon for the FireLite external drive appears, but there is a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark on the icon for the external drive. What does this "warning" mean? There are MP3s of music on the same external drive and they open just fine in iTunes. The one iMovie project file that is already on the drive will not open up in iMovie.
So, how do I properly format this external drive in order to transfer an iMovie project file from my friend's computer so that I can edit it on my MacBook Pro using iMovie '09?
    Sincerely,
    Corey

  • Can't create new iMovie 11 project

When trying to create a new iMovie 11 project, I get a dialogue box with the following, "Cannot create project. Please check the disk to ensure there is enough free space and you have permission to write projects." I have a 2009 Macbook Pro, am running OS X 10.8.2, and have 316 GB of free storage space.
Based on what I read on previous threads, I did the following (not necessarily in the order listed):
I selected the iMovie icon and "Get Info" under the File menu and changed the setting to indicate that I have "Read & Write" permissions for the system, wheel, and everyone.
I went to the finder, selected the "Go" menu and held down the option key to open the "Library." Under "Preferences," I selected "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist" and deleted it.
    I restarted the computer.
After numerous attempts with the above, I reinstalled iMovie and repeated the same steps.
Still no luck. Am I going about this incorrectly? Is there something else I should be trying?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I had this same issue after installing Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP and Zend Server CE.  I installed as admin but the document root (/usr/local/zend/apache2/htdocs) did not have the admin user with Read & Write permissions.
In case it helps others, this is how I got it working:
    Opened Terminal and typed:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
I could then see the hidden /usr/local/zend/apache2/htdocs folder.  I right-clicked it and selected Get Info.  Under Sharing & Permissions I then added the admin user with Read & Write privileges.
To return Finder back to not showing hidden files, issue the same commands but with FALSE.
It might be worth investigating how to configure Zend Server CE so that the document root is not in a hidden folder.  Flash Builder for PHP will let you explore your output folder in the Package Explorer, but you will need to have hidden files visible to see them in Finder.

  • In IMovie my project view is fine until it is finalized and then images are getting partially cut off on top(people's heads etc) Is there something I can do?

In IMovie my project view is fine until it is finalized and then images are getting partially cut off on top(people's heads etc) Is there something I can do?

My issue turned out possibly being a larger problem.
All of a sudden the server is in a bad, bad way.  30 minutes to get booted to the login screen.  If I try to login I get beachballs for half a second at a time.  I type login/password, the screen refreshes and I'm back to the login screen.  I can't connect a keyboard/mouse directly to it, because it wants to do the keyboard recognition (I'm not using an Apple keyboard because they're all Bluetooth and I can't get in to do the Bluetooth sync).  I can't do Disk Utility, because I can't connect a keyboard to do the key shortcut.  I can't do Hardware Test, because I can't connect a keyboard to do the key shortcut.  Can't reinstall Snow Leopard Server, because in their infinite wisdom Apple has removed the optical drive, and even if I had the optical, it wouldn't do any good because I can't connect a keyboard to do the key shortcut that would allow me to boot from the DVD.
I tried to do target disk override from Remote Desktop but it won't let me choose my other Mac's Remote Disc as a boot option.  It also continues to show the Server as "Offline" even though power is on and it's on the network.
I would do my 2010 Air's USB drive - just to do a Disk Utility and see if it's a drive problem - but I can't tell the Server to boot from the USB stick.
Tried using my iMac as a monitor, that worked for a while, now it just flashes and then goes back to the iMac.
I'm thinking the logic board on this thing is about to die.  Which is unfortunate, since my company opted out of AppleCare for this piece of equipment, and the 1 year expired last month.  So...if the repair is going to end up being $800, they're going to have to pony up for a new server.

  • Opening iMovie '08 Projects from Different Installation

    Hi -
    Question 1:
I have 10 iMovie '08 projects saved on a USB HD from a prior installation of iMovie '08. I cannot open these projects or, make iMovie '08 "see" them at all. I can right-click the files and view the contents where I see the different size movies ('Large', 'Mobile', etc.) that I created. How do I access these project files in my new iMovie '08 installation?
    Question 2:
I want to configure iMovie '08 so that the default location for ALL actions is an external HD volume. I do not want any files associated with movie production to ever be saved in the ~/Movies directory of my home directory. Is this even possible? I tried the symlink trick noted elsewhere in this forum, but it did not work. (Actually, the symlink process worked fine but, iMovie '08 still saves projects in ~/Movies.) My editing need are technically simple but, I have a lot of files and want to tightly manage the results. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I had the same problem...I created a movie on my laptop while away for Christmas and tried to transfer it to my iMac when I returned.
What worked for me was to copy the movie into the iMovie 08's Project Library folder - it apparently it looks there for movies when launching. I found the folder by opening a finder window and then searching for a movie that was already in the iMovie project library. My folder is located in my Movie folder and is called "iMovie Projects".
    I hope this helps!
I don't have an answer to your second question. Sorry

  • IMovie '08 won't open iMovie 6 project.

Am I missing something here? Even on import, the iMovie 6 project is grayed out, but not the individual movie files. Seems the "Open Project" under File menu disappeared. Any suggestion as to how older project can be opened? Thanks in advance.

A step back to backward compatibility??!!! This is such a disappointing "upgrade"! I should have read the fine print before shelling out $80 for this! I just assumed that since all the other upgrades had no issues with opening previous versions of iMovie, that '08 would not be different. I edit in FCP 6.01 but my son, a big fan of iMovie had to revert back to iMovie 6.x. I hope an update will allow iMovie users to open their last masterpiece produced in this "matured" version.

  • Backing up iMovie HD projects

    Hi,
I am in the process of moving a bunch of old 8 mm camcorder tapes to DVD. I am using a Canon ZR 70 MC camcorder as a AV-DV passthrough, downloading the video to an iMovie HD project then using OneStep DVD (from movie) in iDVD to burn the DVD. This is very tedious but has worked. I am now trying to save the iMovie HD projects to an external hard drive as a backup so I can delete the originals on my iMac hard drive. When I try to drag/copy the iMovie HD project to the external hard drive, I get an error message and it is unable to copy. If I try to "Save As" to the hard drive, I get a 2 gb file (vs 25 gb in the original) missing the original clips, etc I see when I open the file saved on my iMac. I see the same thing (incomplete file) on the Time Machine back up. I could not find anything in the manuals/support addressing this. I'm sure there are better ways to go about this whole process, but is there a simple solution to the backup issue?
Thanks very much for any help you can provide.
    John

I have tried different ways to try to save the files without any luck. I would think it has to do with the file format or how it is saved but I can't figure out why given that the files work fine to burn the DVD.
Then you had better go back to the beginning. Are you trying to save video files or iMovie HD project packages? What specific error messages are you receiving? Which "different ways" have you tried to save files. Since it does not appear to be a length restriction due to formatting, it could be anything from a file system error to a parameter list error to insufficient memory to, at the worst, an OS corruption error. Basically, we need more information to rule out various possibilities.

  • IMovie '08 Editing Delay Issues

I truly hope someone out there can help me with this because the solution from the "genius" guys at the Apple Store was that I needed to do my project in Final Cut Pro. I am creating a movie in iMovie '08 using approximately 70 illustrated drawings (jpeg) and recorded about 80 lines using a snowball in iMovie. Each of the lines are separate sound files (7 year olds are good for about 1 line without mistakes) I am now in the process of timing the images to the voiceover and when I click on the voiceover clip to move it the hand moves but not the clip or skim line and then the beach ball comes up for a spin and then the clip moves but not with the hand. So basically its all a guess as to where the voiceover lands. Sometimes it overlaps another one or is not close enough. The delay basically makes it impossible to edit efficiently. The movie file itself is around 89MB. I will tear my hair out if I have to edit in this manner. Any suggestions out there? I have done this process successfully with a shorter 2 minute movie (see sample at YouTube, search for "Little 'O'opu Who Lost His Way") but this one is about 7 minutes. Mahalo!

I wish I had thought about recording in GarageBand as your explanation below would seem to alleviate the issue I'm having, unfortunately that means recording the Grade 1 students all over again which took an entire school day.
How so? If recorded separately and brought into iMovie for editing, then the same files can be brought into GarageBand for editing from the original source location/management application. If the "voiceovers" were made directly to iMovie '08, then they can be exported either as an audio track along with your video or exported separately as an audio only file like AIFF. In either case, the audio track (or tracks) are edited separately from video in GarageBand. E.g., if you need to physically split an audio track in GarageBand, you select the track you wish to edit, move the playhead to the point where you which to split the track, and simply select the "Split" Edit menu option. If you then deselect the track as a whole and re-select one of the split portions, it can then be dragged to a different track, or, if the is space available, moved along the time axis for alignment to the video track. Periods of silence can be delete if present and, as to the actual adjustments to the audio such as fades and setting of volume, each audio segment on any audio track can be manipulated in much the same way you used to do this in the old version of iMovie using the "rubber band" contour/control. In many ways you may find your audio editing more reminiscent of iMovie HD than iMovie '08.
I'd like to be able to salvage what I have if I could. What if I export the existing movie as is, extract the sound files only in QuickTime Pro--maybe I could import and edit in GarageBand and reimport into iMovie?
As indicated above, this is not necessary since you can export/share your project directly from iMovie '08 as a single audio/video file, video only file, and/or audio only file. Best strategy here would be to export/share your iMovie '08 project content to your final target compression format. GarageBand will import and thumbnail the video and convert the audio to AIFF for editing. When finished editing, export the GarageBand project using the "Export to Disk > Full Quality" option. GarageBand will then take your original video and mix it with your edited audio which is then re-converted back to your original audio codec.
I'm not very conversant in GarageBand (or iMovie for that matter) so I could possibly make a mess of everything but I'll give it a try.
GarageBand also has a "Revert to Saved" option which will return you to your last saved version of your project but if you fail to make periodic saves during the work session, you won't get the most out of this option.

  • Steps to add music from a CD to an iMovie 09 project

    Hello all.
I have made an iMovie video project using the music from iTunes. (most of the iTunes library music was ripped from a CD, others I purchased from iTunes) Other posts have had the same syncing problems when iTunes music is used. (the video and audio are out of sync about 5 min. into the project when viewed in iDVD or in QuickTime.)
Many of you suggest using the music from the original CD instead of using my iTunes music. The PROBLEM; the information I've gotten to use CD music in iMovie 09 seems to be for another version.
The instructions basically say to; ( Insert CD, then in iMovie click on the MEDIA BUTTON, and select AUDIO. Choose iTunes library or CD from the POP UP MENU. Select the track from the list in Audio Pane. Then click "PLACE AT PLAYHEAD.")
Now all of this seems simple enough except there is NO MEDIA BUTTON OR AUDIO BUTTON. iMovie help doesn't help. Maybe one of you very bright people out there has actually done this in iMovie 09 (version 8.0.6)
Also, I called Apple Support and they told me to use iTunes music, then share the project to my desktop. Open the movie on my desktop and review it with QuickTime. I did this, But the video had THE SAME SYNCING ISSUES. Please, Please, can someone out there help me????

You cannot unless you use another computer to import it, then copy to a flash drive or similar.

  • How do you Move an iMovie '08 Project to Another Mac?

What's the best way to move an iMovie '08 project to another Mac on my network? (Both Macs have iMovie '08.) Specifically, is there an easy way to move a project and the event containing the imported clips in one step?
Often, I'll do work on my Intel MacBook then transfer stuff to my Intel iMac for long term storage. In iMovie '08, I tried various imports and exports and nothing worked so well. For example, when you drag and drop a project file from one computer to another the clips don't come with it. You can play the movie but the clips in the media browser are grayed-out.
There ought to be something like the archive routine that packages up everything and lets you put it on another computer for further editing.
    Thanks!

I would like to know the same thing but not for another Mac... just another user. Should be almost the same procedure right?
My iMovie '08 is crashing like crazy! I just want to get the projects into iMovie using a fresh user and hope that fixes it. I can see where copying/moving preferences into the library of the other user (along with duping the projects in the movies folder) might succeed in opening the project in another user. I'm just afraid of moving bad prefs or something.

  • Import iMovie HD project

I have a Sony High Def SR11 camcorder. When I transfer my movie from camcorder to my desktop a icon shows up on my desktop for my hard drive for camcorder. Now in the icon hard drive what do I have to import to use when I am choosing import iMovie HD project from iMovie from my icon hard drive on desktop from camcorder to make a movie in iMove. thanks.

Have you tried FILE/IMPORT iMovie HD Project?
You should be aware of the limitations.
It will put all the clips in an Event.
It will put the timeline clips in a project.
It will not bring over any titles or music.
It will replace any transitions with cross dissolves.

You may want to have a "dual Boot" system.
You can have 10.5 and 10.6
