IMovie 09 as a slideshow - choppy performance

Just started using iMovie 09 for my first project which is approx. 24 mins in length, it is a slideshow with stills and music and transitions added. Whenever I play the in the timeline window, it gets really choppy, the music pops, and frames appear as black or the wrong slide entirely. I was under the impression that 8 second stills took up far less memory than video footage.
I read in the posts that it was recommended to keep iMovie down as a short 20 min film, I thought I had that covered. If say, I want to try breaking down the project into smaller sections to see if that helps, can I just go into the events window, select the project and simply duplicate it (like in the Finder). That way I can just go into the copies and delete whole sections for convenience.
Thanks,
Carl

I did, with no effect. I currently have 2 GB of Ram in my G5 Tower

  • I made a movie in iMovie from an imported slideshow. How do I export the movie to burn on a disc to play on a pc

I made a movie in iMovie from an imported slideshow. How do I export the movie to burn on a disc to play on a pc? I burned one copy and it didn't playback properly on the PC. The pictures played extremely slow while the music played

    Hi cortiz58,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
What version of iMovie are you working with?  Is your end goal that you need to play the file on a Windows computer, or is it that you need to burn the file to DVD?
See this link for tips to re-wrap your file for Windows:
How to create a video for playback with Windows/XBox/PS3/… etc?: Apple Support Communities

If you export the iMovie file as a .mov file, you can play it in iTunes for Windows on your PC.
If you want the ability to burn to DVD, then you may consider downloading the free 30 day trial of our professional video application.  Final Cut Pro X can import your iMovie project and burn it to DVD.

  • Lots of stuttering and choppy performance using GNOME3

    ASUS P5K Premium
    Core2Quad Q6600 2.40GHz
ATI Radeon HD3870 using Xorg 1.12.4 and Legacy Catalyst 13.1
    Creative SB X-Fi XtremeMusic
Basically, the system stutters everywhere: Although CS:Source has great performance (i'd say close to 60fps) it's plagued with micro stutters every 20 seconds or so (as is every other game) and sometimes the performance gets really choppy for no reason. If I drag a window around, just to test, it will eventually stutter, window animations sometimes stutter too, smooth scrolling in web browsers isn't smooth at all (very choppy), flash videos stutter all the time as well! I've taken a look at the system monitor and the process that usually uses CPU the most is gnome-shell which can go as high as 80% but it's mostly at 40%. I installed XFCE just to check and everything's perfectly fine there. Could anyone help me out with this please?

    PT? Portugal?
    I'm from Portugal.
It's well known that some ATI graphic option can gravelly mess up its performance (micro stutters, choppy performance).
You can try to enable/disable some options. Better to read this, if you haven't already!

  • IMovie 09 as a slideshow-performance sluggish

Just started using iMovie 09 for my first project which is approx. 24 mins in length, it is a slideshow with stills, music and transitions added. Whenever I tap the space bar to watch the preview, the playback is choppy, the music pops, and frames occasionally appear as black or the wrong slide entirely. I was under the impression that 8 second stills took up far less memory than video footage. I don't care if the preview is choppy, so long as the export comes out smooth.
I read in the posts that it was recommended to keep iMovie down as a short 20 min film, I thought I had that covered. I also read that breaking the project into smaller parts. Tried that, and I still get choppy playback. Any suggestions?

  • Ipad 3 choppy performance

I purchased an ipad 3 and have previously owned an iPad 2.  I know the hardware improvements is to only handle the better display.
But what I am noticing is that the performance of the iPad 3 is noticably more choppy than my old iPad 2.  www.yahoo.com for example is choppy when scrolling the main headline page.  And in other areas like web browsing and the app store, and sometimes even just scrolling the through the icons.  It is like it lags when it's loading graphics into memory and then once it's cached then it runs more smoothly.
I will have to take a trip to Best Buy to see if this is normal, but I wanted to ask here as well.  I'm just curious if this is normal.

I too have this issue. I had an iPad 2, then got the new iPad. I called support shortly after I bought it and the tech I spoke with said I had my thumb too close to the edge and that's what made it choppy. Do they think we are stupid? It happens on any site that is connected to the Internet and please don't tell me I have a poor signal- I don't and it happens any place I'm at. Here's what happens: I open up Safari, Facebook, twitter, chrome, email,iTunes, etc. I scroll down the page. The page is jerky/choppy as I scroll down then it jumps back up to the top. I try to scroll down again, it jumps back up. This happens until finally it seems to be loaded. Then it works ok until I change apps. I sadly upgraded to iOS 6 but it was choppy before I upgraded. When I first started researching this issue, I found others who mentioned this issue. Several people responded that their iPads scrolled perfectly and that they would notice if it wasn't smooth.
The choppiness reminds me of my crossover to the droid. I had had an iPhone and never paid attention to the scrolling until I got the Droid. It was choppy like my iPad 3. Returned to the iPhone and all was well until the iPad 3. After writing this I have decided I am going to call apple support again and be more insistent that this is not normal.
    Good luck, altered82000.

  • Creating a iMovie with movies and slideshows

I am going to be creating a farewell DVD for some friends.  I would like to have both slideshows from various events along with movies from these same events play on the DVD.
If I'm thinking correctly, I basically want to create slideshows from the various events and then insert those into the iMovie around the movies of the same event.
Can someone tell me if I'm heading the right direction?  I have two weeks to do this, but I'd like to make sure I'm heading down the right road, or if there's a better way to do it, I would like to know.
Also, what is the best way to insert audio (music) into the slide show part?  Is this done in iMovie or iPhoto?
    Thanks!

    Add the music in iMovie.
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto (see this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2423 ), iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!

  • IMovieHD or iMovie 08 for making slideshow to send to iDVD?

Is there any quality difference (in algorithms etc) when making a slideshow to send to iDVD?
I am making a short movie to burn to a DVD and really like the updated tools in iMovie 08 (easier Ken Burns in my opinion) but iMovie 08 can't really do chapters (and I NEED chapters). Can I make an "outline" of the iMovie in iMovie HD (with all the songs and chapters laid out) and then import it to iMovie 08 to do the slides? Will there be any difference in the final product, or is just the interface different (but the way a jpg is processed the same)?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Or you can also search this forum and look for Garage Band to create custom chapter markers within iLife'08.
You may want to consider using apple's free download of iM6 for this purpose also (much easier)......

  • IPhone 4 has serious jerky choppy performance since uploading IOS 5.  Scrolling through photos jerks; Roadmate voice commands are broken in a staccato fashion; Screen game play is very jerky  - Everything is choppy!!

I have read many messages regarding choppy and jerky performance going back to 4.3.1  Has anyone else noticed this with the recent IOS 5 upgrade?  Any recommended solutions??
    Thanks,
    Mike

    No genius here either...
    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart..  Reset..  Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restarting your device
    1)   Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
    2)   Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Follow these steps to reset your device
Note: Reset your device only if it is no longer responding and the steps above do not work.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Firefox slow, laggy, choppy performance on powerful PC. Other browsers working fine. Help?

    i7 930 @ 3.8GHz, 6GB RAM@1600MHz, Intel SSD and Nvidia 660 Ti 2GB.
That's my PC. It starts up in seconds, it's 100% stable, can run any video/audio production software with ease, and play any game at high/max settings.
But somehow, Firefox doesn't seem to care.
It keeps freezing up, lagging, and driving me crazy in the process. I've tried everything: reinstalling, resetting FF, removing addons, reinstalling addons, doing clean installs.... nothing. I've tried chrome. Works fine. IE even works better than FF.
All this started in the last year or two. Slowly. I've felt each version getting slower and slower, and now it's just ridiculous. I open like 10 tabs and FF grinds to a halt, it takes 5-10 seconds for it to un-freeze sometimes. And facebook timeline scrolling?! forget about it. the more you scroll, the worse the freezing gets, to the point where I'm forced to restart FF and start all over again!
I've been with FF since v1, I've watched it grow into the best browser of all, but I've also watched chrome rightfully take that title away in the last few years, because of what FF has turned into.
I'd much rather stick with FF, but the frustration is getting out of hand. I can't take the slow and buggy performance, and I can't seem to find a solution.
So is there a way to make firefox work as it should on a fast PC, or do I have to switch to chrome to get the performance back?
    (Win7 x64 SP1, ADSL 20 MBit)

As I have seen That you have installed so much extension which is the main reason behind the slowness. Since they need some memory each time you start working with firefox.
However do try to disable those extensions which are not used regularly ,when you need to used them just enable from addons section.
Also try with [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Safe Mode] and check whether the problem still persist or not.
Read This Thread : [http://mzl.la/1BAQIeY Many CPU Processes]
These are some steps will help you to fix issues like slowness:
If monitoring tools shows High ram used by firefox then it might be due to Hardware acceleration enabled . Uncheck them from '''Options'''>'''Advance''' >under '''General''' tab.
Sometimes plugins becomes the cause,so Check whether all plugins are up to dated or not from '''Addons''' >'''Plugins''' tab.

  • IMovie 09 playback(full-screen) choppy during titles and transitions.

When I insert someting like a moving title, or a fading transition into my movie: the full-screen playback (and not the playback on the viewer) gets choppy or skips a movement. It specifically happens where the screen should be fading/transitioning or when a title should be moving/fading onto the screen. I have all the updates for 09 and I'm pretty sure that if this is the case on a full-scree, it would defenitely happen on a published exported version.

  • My imovie is cut up and choppy

I recorded about 3 minutes of rehearsal today but when I go back to play it, it is about 3 seconds long and doesn't show any of the real time movement.

I recorded it using my mac, with the imovie program. it is almost like a stop/start version of the work, but very condensed.

  • Choppy performance when fan kicks in

Now that it's summer and getting warmer in my studio, I notice that the FCP playback gets choppy and generally gets weird as my G-5's fan kicks in. Does this make sense? It is making me a bit anxious. Despite my efforts to cool things off it reaches about 80 in our workspace in the heat of the day.

There is a nifty application called Temperature Monitor you may want to look into. It reads all the temp sensors in your machine and you can keep an eye on the trends. It is a great monitoring tool when you want to experiment with alternative cooling strategies.
In the FWIW category, I've found a simple smalll fan blowing air around my 17" Powerbook will keep the temps 10 degrees F cooler (or more) on hot days. Often enough to keep the fans from kicking in and from getting so hot I end up sweating all over the keyboard.
Also, do a search for CHUD in the developer forum. It is another nifty app that allows you to set your processors to sleep when not in use. It has a big effect on heat generation. It was a life saver with some of the 'aircraft jet fan noise ' problems with earlier tower models.
    Good luck.

  • If i move my iphoto & iMovie source library / Events and Projects to an external hard disk, due to size, will my existing slideshows work ?

I need to move my photo library and Movies (Events and Projects) to an external hard disk as my 700gb drive on my iMac is now full (*see note below)
I have brought 2 Samsung External drives (3TB each) which I plan to partition each for Photos and Movies i.e 2 partitions on each drive, and will use one for use with iPhoto and iMovie, and the other drive for a dedicated backup. I will backup the remainder of my iMac hardisk to a seperate disk.
What has just occured to me is that after I have moved the libraries I cannot see how existing iMovie projects and iPhoto Slideshows will work, as each Application will be looking for the source files on the original iMac hardisc (I assume).
I am running Snow Leopard v10.6.8 ( I did not want to upgrade to Mountain Lion as I was told the iPhoto and iMovie changes were a 'backward' step. However I now want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, for security updates reasons mainly, and so need to free up my hard drive.
Can anyone advise on the best way to proceed ?
    * - the iMac hard disk become full very suddenly, possibly due to duplicates, as I have noticed duplicate events and clips in my iMovies event library. I have noticed that some events are also now not showing, with message 'No video clips match the current selection' (I have not search criteria set).
    Thanks

I was planning on manually backing up my external to the time capsule - but is there a way to set it up to back up automatically instead?
Time Machine will backup up automatically - you can not have your iPhoto library on the same volume as the TM backup (it will not work and it would not be a backup)
Dragging the iPhoto library to any external drive will backup it us also
I was also thinking about having the library copied to another external (I mean we're talking about irreplaceable photos here) - would i just drag a copy of the library to that drive as well?
Yes - that is a good idea - I run TM giving me hourly backups and a daily clone of my entire system giving me a bootable backup - plus do an occasional TM backup at our second home so I have one off site
is it possible to deal with my imovie library in the same way? so all my movies and photos are on my external?
Probably - but I use iMovie very little - better question for the iMovie forum

  • Presentation in iMovie or iPhoto slideshow

    Hello,
i´m creating a portfolio in iMovie for clients, and after drag every photo, i´d like to make it start not with the first image, but with first "frame"/image like a presentation, with my name, job, etc etc, and the same thing for the end of portfolio with "all rights reserve... photos by... music..."
I made it in another software. Is it possible to do this with iMovie, or in iPhoto slideshow?
    Thanks,
    Tiago

You can make beginning and ending titles in iMovie.
If you want to make your own custom titles or credits, you can do them in Photoshop (or the equivalent), save them as a JPEG, and import them into iMovie just as you would any other photo.

  • IMovie 08's realtime performance scales to H/W spec?

There's been ongoing discussion of whether iMovie's output quality is limited by single field processing and 960x540 canvas size. While many have experienced decreased resolution detail of HD output, Winston has shown an example of full HD output, which is an uplifting news.
Now I conducted a simple experiment to see if this single field processing is true.
I created a 1440x1080 image in photoshop with blue and red stripes alternating, half vertical and half horizontal (top image). I exported this image from Quicktime player to 1440x1080i AIC quicktime movie to bring it into iMovie 08 (second image). Vertical part has been smeared into purple color, a result of AIC's chroma subsampling. You can still see the hint of vertical stripes.
In iMovie's project, the image looks half red and half purple, as does the output Quicktime(third image). If iMovie reduce size in half without discarding one field it would've been flat purple. The fact that it is flat red indicates that iMovie ignores one field for processing and outputting.
I've been trying to reproduce Winston's full quality HD output but no luck so far. I believe I used the same procedure as his, and the only difference is the hardware spec.
Winston, your signature says that you use Quad core Mac pro with 3GHz speed and 4GB ram, where mine is a mere Mac mini with core duo processor and 1GB ram. Obviously the two has big difference in GPU power and graphics memory. I think a possible explanation for your full HD output may be the top of the line system spec. If iMovie is capable of optimizing its performance to the hardware it's running on, maybe iMovie processes movies in 1920x1080 canvas instead of 960x540 size.
I think this is pretty cool thing if it's true. Apple still need to add an option for outputting movie with software only processing (and no GPU) for maximum quality on low end machines, but at least this performance scaling makes iMovie more intereseting tool for highend mac users.

    Euising
I note your points about processors and this could well be the case. I noted that it takes about real time or less to import AVCHD to AIC through imovie (really rough estimate as I've never actually timed it, indeed I've never actually thought about it) but it seems to take about 4 or 5 times as long when I import to the same AIC quality using voltaic, perhaps voltaic can't utilise my CPUs as imovie can.
Back to the issue of tests, I made a 1920 x 1080 test slide in photoshop which I saved as an interlaced .png
This is a screenshot of that file, most lines are of a single pixel width and I've tried to utilise the primary RGB and CYMK colours.
I opened this file in QT and exported to AVC 1920 x 1080 interlaced
This is a screenshot of the export. Disappointingly the export wasn't quite the same as the original as you can see. I've got some thoughts about why this occurred but since exporting PS projects to AVC in QT isn't what we are discussing I'll let that lie.
The final step was to import the movie file to imovie and export it as AVC 1920 x 1080 interlaced.
I'm sure you'll agree it's identical to the file I imported into imovie. I did diverge from your workflow a little because I wasn't entirely happy I knew how the anamorphic nature of AIC would affect my results.
I've posted the original movie file here should you wish to put it through imovie yourself for comparison, I'm going to try to fit in doing the same thing on my laptop to see if I get a different result. (I think the web page may well be blank if you use the link, but you should be able to click and drag the blank webpage to your desktop to download the file)
