IMovie 09 as a slideshow-performance sluggish

Just started using iMovie 09 for my first project which is approx. 24 mins in length, it is a slideshow with stills, music and transitions added. Whenever I tap the space bar to watch the preview, the playback is choppy, the music pops, and frames occasionally appear as black or the wrong slide entirely. I was under the impression that 8 second stills took up far less memory than video footage. I don't care if the preview is choppy, so long as the export comes out smooth.
I read in the posts that it was recommended to keep iMovie down as a short 20 min film, I thought I had that covered. I also read that breaking the project into smaller parts. Tried that, and I still get choppy playback. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Carl

  • I made a movie in iMovie from an imported slideshow. How do I export the movie to burn on a disc to play on a pc

I made a movie in iMovie from an imported slideshow. How do I export the movie to burn on a disc to play on a pc? I burned one copy and it didn't playback properly on the PC. The pictures played extremely slow while the music played

    Hi cortiz58,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
What version of iMovie are you working with?  Is your end goal that you need to play the file on a Windows computer, or is it that you need to burn the file to DVD?
See this link for tips to re-wrap your file for Windows:

If you export the iMovie file as a .mov file, you can play it in iTunes for Windows on your PC.
If you want the ability to burn to DVD, then you may consider downloading the free 30 day trial of our professional video application.  Final Cut Pro X can import your iMovie project and burn it to DVD.

  • IMovie 09 as a slideshow - choppy performance

Just started using iMovie 09 for my first project which is approx. 24 mins in length, it is a slideshow with stills and music and transitions added. Whenever I play the in the timeline window, it gets really choppy, the music pops, and frames appear as black or the wrong slide entirely. I was under the impression that 8 second stills took up far less memory than video footage.
I read in the posts that it was recommended to keep iMovie down as a short 20 min film, I thought I had that covered. If say, I want to try breaking down the project into smaller sections to see if that helps, can I just go into the events window, select the project and simply duplicate it (like in the Finder). That way I can just go into the copies and delete whole sections for convenience.
    Thanks,

  • Aperture Performance Sluggish When in Full Screen Mode

    Hi
I have an iMac 3.06 GHz with a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS:with 512 MB of VRAM and 4GB of RAM and every time I go to Aperture's fullscreen mode performance is sluggish. When I click on buttons with my mouse it takes them about 3 to 5 seconds to actually realize they've been clicked. Also when I try to adjust something in a HUD, it takes forever to register my command. I would love to be able to use full screen mode because of my big screen on my iMac but it's really not worth it if it's this slow.
    All help appreciated
    Thanks in advance

  • Creating a iMovie with movies and slideshows

I am going to be creating a farewell DVD for some friends.  I would like to have both slideshows from various events along with movies from these same events play on the DVD.
If I'm thinking correctly, I basically want to create slideshows from the various events and then insert those into the iMovie around the movies of the same event.
Can someone tell me if I'm heading the right direction?  I have two weeks to do this, but I'd like to make sure I'm heading down the right road, or if there's a better way to do it, I would like to know.
Also, what is the best way to insert audio (music) into the slide show part?  Is this done in iMovie or iPhoto?
    Thanks!

    Add the music in iMovie.
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto (see this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2423 ), iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!

  • IMovieHD or iMovie 08 for making slideshow to send to iDVD?

Is there any quality difference (in algorithms etc) when making a slideshow to send to iDVD?
I am making a short movie to burn to a DVD and really like the updated tools in iMovie 08 (easier Ken Burns in my opinion) but iMovie 08 can't really do chapters (and I NEED chapters). Can I make an "outline" of the iMovie in iMovie HD (with all the songs and chapters laid out) and then import it to iMovie 08 to do the slides? Will there be any difference in the final product, or is just the interface different (but the way a jpg is processed the same)?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Or you can also search this forum and look for Garage Band to create custom chapter markers within iLife'08.
You may want to consider using apple's free download of iM6 for this purpose also (much easier)......

  • How does the quality of Previews effect slideshow performance?

Does anybody know how Aperture uses the Image Previews in a slideshow? The default image preview is half size and medium quality. Does this mean Aperture has to generate full size previews on-the-fly during the show?
If I changed to full-size previews at high quality am I helping Aperture display the images during a slidshow, or not?
Maybe Aperture doesn't use the previews at all during a slideshow and making a few hundred full-size previews would only be filling up my hard drive for no useful purpose.

And another quote from the fine manual:
    Re Slideshow:
    Rendering Preview Images
Aperture renders preview images in four situations:
When a library is upgraded—provided that the “Create previews for existing images” checkbox is selected in the Welcome to Aperture dialog
When an image is imported, or a version is created, rotated, or adjusted—provided that the Maintain Previews item is selected in the Library Action pop-up menu (with a gear icon)
When you Control-click the library, a project, or an image selection and choose Update Previews from the shortcut menu
Immediately before a slideshow, if the previews are not up to date, and the slideshow preset uses the Best quality setting
When rendering a group of preview images, Aperture uses the current application preference settings for compression quality and picture size, not the settings that were specified when preview rendering began. For example, if you have the quality set to 6, and then halfway through rendering you change the setting to 8, the previews that have not yet been rendered will be compressed at setting 8. Previously rendered previews are unaffected.
So, a high quality slideshow will require high quality previews, and indeed Aperture will render previews before rendering a slideshow, if the preview quality is not sufficient.

  • Satellite M30 slow booting, performance sluggish & HDD activity light on most of the time

Have the above issue with my laptop. It used to run faster than my desktop but performance has degraded. Runs XP SP2 and Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works. No errors show when running Norton Tests. Have reformatted hard disk and reinstalled software but little difference.
Laptop takes @5 mins to boot. Opening Outlook takes 10 seconds. Hard disk light is on most of time so wondered if hard disk related.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
Download Hirens Boot CD (if you have a fast internet connection, as the file is 65MB). This CD has quiet a few tests you can use for HDD. HDD regenerator for instance will repair any surface damage on the disks etc. As will a few others. Hope this helps.

  • CC 2014.1 AJA LHI worst performance/ sluggish

    Hi there,
till the CC 2014.1 Update its nearly impossible to work with my aja kona lhi card.
When i enable the Breakout Card in the playback setting i get bad choppy audio and sometimes only the audio peakmeter waves and no sound reaches the speaker. Another thing i realised as soon as i turn on AJA the responsibility of the UI goes down as well as video on the pc displays only plays choppy (like slow motion/ chewing gum). I realized some of these small laggy behaviors till CC 2014 i put the blame on hard projects i was working on.
My workaround turn of AJA and connect client monitor via GFX card HDMI everything works.
Anyone else has this kind of problems, or with other third party hardware (Blackmagic, other Aja Cards)

  • New Macbook Pro / Leopard - Choppy graphics performance, sluggish animation

I just got a new Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz 15" featuring the new Nvidia 8600m graphics processor. I previously had the Core Duo Macbook Pro that had the ATi Radeon x1600.
I was expecting the new macbook to be smoother, if not leaps and bounds smoother and more responsive graphically when compared to the previous model. For example, anything animated in Leopard is choppy and staggering like Dashboard, Genie effect, scrolling web pages in Safari. It almost seems like the video card is struggling, or there are driver issues with the Nvidia chips in Leopard and they are not mature yet. Even videos in Quicktime are noticeably choppy. I have tried installing Tiger and the problems are gone, everything is smooth like it should be. I then did a clean re-install of Leopard and choppiness resumed.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue? I've been reading similar reports from others across the web and all seem to point to Nvidia driver issues that could be resolved in 10.5.2. Thanks.

I have the same problem but with my dock. For example the right side of the divider if I have a couple of windows minimized ( safari, finder) and drag a file ( text, .jpg , etc) and move it around the minimized windows move in a very jerky fashion ( to allow space for the file). I had at first just blamed 10.5 because the dock is more fancy then the tiger one, but my girlfriend owns a black macbook and her dock is about 5 x more fluid then mine ( never jerky ). I don't understand how this is possible when my macbook pro have a much better graphics card? I have deleted the plist, downloaded programs to set the dock to default settings. All with no luck.. I really hope 10.5.3 fixes this problem. I hope I have explained my situation properly . Any advice would be nice. I really don't want to have to do a erase and install!!
    Thanks

  • If i move my iphoto & iMovie source library / Events and Projects to an external hard disk, due to size, will my existing slideshows work ?

I need to move my photo library and Movies (Events and Projects) to an external hard disk as my 700gb drive on my iMac is now full (*see note below)
I have brought 2 Samsung External drives (3TB each) which I plan to partition each for Photos and Movies i.e 2 partitions on each drive, and will use one for use with iPhoto and iMovie, and the other drive for a dedicated backup. I will backup the remainder of my iMac hardisk to a seperate disk.
What has just occured to me is that after I have moved the libraries I cannot see how existing iMovie projects and iPhoto Slideshows will work, as each Application will be looking for the source files on the original iMac hardisc (I assume).
I am running Snow Leopard v10.6.8 ( I did not want to upgrade to Mountain Lion as I was told the iPhoto and iMovie changes were a 'backward' step. However I now want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, for security updates reasons mainly, and so need to free up my hard drive.
Can anyone advise on the best way to proceed ?
    * - the iMac hard disk become full very suddenly, possibly due to duplicates, as I have noticed duplicate events and clips in my iMovies event library. I have noticed that some events are also now not showing, with message 'No video clips match the current selection' (I have not search criteria set).
    Thanks

I was planning on manually backing up my external to the time capsule - but is there a way to set it up to back up automatically instead?
Time Machine will backup up automatically - you can not have your iPhoto library on the same volume as the TM backup (it will not work and it would not be a backup)
Dragging the iPhoto library to any external drive will backup it us also
I was also thinking about having the library copied to another external (I mean we're talking about irreplaceable photos here) - would i just drag a copy of the library to that drive as well?
Yes - that is a good idea - I run TM giving me hourly backups and a daily clone of my entire system giving me a bootable backup - plus do an occasional TM backup at our second home so I have one off site
is it possible to deal with my imovie library in the same way? so all my movies and photos are on my external?
Probably - but I use iMovie very little - better question for the iMovie forum

  • Presentation in iMovie or iPhoto slideshow

    Hello,
i´m creating a portfolio in iMovie for clients, and after drag every photo, i´d like to make it start not with the first image, but with first "frame"/image like a presentation, with my name, job, etc etc, and the same thing for the end of portfolio with "all rights reserve... photos by... music..."
I made it in another software. Is it possible to do this with iMovie, or in iPhoto slideshow?
    Thanks,
    Tiago

You can make beginning and ending titles in iMovie.
If you want to make your own custom titles or credits, you can do them in Photoshop (or the equivalent), save them as a JPEG, and import them into iMovie just as you would any other photo.

  • Jagged font problem - iMovie to iDVD to then burn a DVD

    I have iMovie 11 - v 9.0.2 and iDVD 7.1.1.
I've imported photos and audio into iMovie to create a slideshow with transitions.  All works well there.
When I then export to iDVD and preview it on screen, everything looks great.
But when I burn to DVD and play in a DVD player, the fonts look terrible - so they are not rendering properly.
Font I am using is Coolvetica.  It was in the iDVD package.  I opened up the iDVD package and copied the font into Fontbook to make it available in iMovie.
Any advice on what I'm doing wrong?
    neilc

Thanks. That solved the font problem.
However, the overall quality of my DVD when display on a 42 inch plasma HDTV is poor---looks like a photo that has been copied on a color copier--too contrasty and with color shifting to yellow.  I have created three new projects from the original video, which is 47 minutes long, one DVD in each of Best Performance, High Quality and Professional Quality. The Best Performance is terrible.  However, neither the High or the Professional quality is much better, other than the fonts looking better.  Both formats result in high contrast poor images and color shift to yellow.
I have shared the iMovie in the Media Browser in HD 1080 and in 720.
I noticed that all the DVDs didn't seen to write more than about 1/2 inch on the outside edge of the DVD. The size of the TS-Video folder on the High and Professional DVDs take up only 2.82 gig.  It seems that iDVD is compressing the video more than necessary, leaving a lot of unused space on a standard 4.7 gig DVD.
Interestingly, DVD's made of much shorter videos and produced in the Best Performance mode on iDVD look very good when played on the Plasma TV.
Both the High and the Professional DVDs look very good on my McBook Pro and MacMini screens.
Given the restriction of a standard DVD player (480p) I wonder if I should share the movie in this format.

  • WORKAROUND! - Sluggish Motion V 4.0.1 on Mac Pro Nehalem 2.97 GHz 16 Vcore

Hi guys, like several people on this forum and others I been very frustrated with the performance of both Motion.app version 3 and now Motion.app V4 .0 .1 (latest update) on my 2009 Mac pro Nehalem 2.97 GHz 16 Vcore 12GB with the ATI Radeon 4870 graphics card.
I have two workarounds that may be of assistance in relieving this issue. They work for me however before I discuss what they I'd like to set the scene.
Like many of us, I have trawled this forum and many others including COW and so on mostly relying on those 10-12 (the dozen or so) excellent tips from people like Mark Spencer and others. This includes the usual things like turning off rendering options that make heavy use of CPU/GPU etc.
Caveat: I'd also like to note here that this performance sluggishness has absolutely nothing to do (and is completely unrelated to) I/O performance nor is it related to memory usage. The reason I say this is because during some testing and the normal practice I keep all a Motion.app cache files (autosave, cached files etc) out on a very fast PROAVIO EB8NS disk array with ATTO R380 HBA onto SAS paths where this box is capable of over 450 MB per second measured with Kona system test tool. Additionally I have 12 GB of memory on this Mac pro which I assigned 70% of it to be available to Motion.app V4. The sluggishness Motion.app V4 is not manifest itself through the usual items such as excessive virtual memory page in/out or swap in/out activity. In fact in this scenario I describe below in my system when nothing else is running the former is non-existent! Additionally I also want to know that Motion.app V4 in my scenario/situation/environment is definitely and certainly NOT impacted by insufficient I/O bandwidth..
However, like many people, who have the same or similar setup to myself, we experience severe delays the most basic Motion.app UI such as: selecting an item, scrubbing through the timeline, performing any kind of transform etc etc. Many of us trying to diagnose this problem (looking for any kind of diagnostics or messages etc) have noticed that with the exception of one single core, the remaining cores to do very little (idle or just barely moving) whilst the remaining single core is taking out at 100% constantly.
Many months ago whilst really bogged down with this problem trying to complete a project, I contacted Mark Spencer who politely explained that notion exploits the on-board graphics card (in my case the ATI Radeon HD 4870). After frustratingly trying to improve the performance of this and completely reinstalling Final Cut Suite in a different brand-new (at the time MacOS X 10.5.6), I found that there was little difference.
I am mentioning all this because, I know that a few colleagues have had a similar problem and have not found any satisfaction in looking at this despite many well-informed forum users who offer excellent advice.
At my wits end (currently), I took a few days to try and isolate what the problems may be caused by (what exacerbates this severely degraded performance). This user interface sludgy degradation is manifested through the UI also has the (spinning beach ball).
I isolated pieces in some of the Motion.app projects and started to ISOLATE (Control-I) what I thought were quite complex layers and individual objects but to no avail. I then resorted to completely deleting them with some improvement in performance (noticeably less sluggyness) however it still was not lightning fast as I expected considering it I was in draft mode, 720 p resolution, with lighting, shadows and reflections completely turned off in the view.
*Motion.app BEHAVIOURS*: after some hours and a great deal of trial and error (non-productive work time I might add) it occurred to me that some of the Motion.app behaviours in particular place in the layer with as few as five objects in the layer (behaviours such as "Motion.app path", "wriggle", "oscillate" and even good old trusted "throw" seem to be the culprits in this particular layer.
I will note well here at this point, but of course "camera layers" does seem to be affected at all with the basic movements such as Dolly, frame, sweep etc. I have some sets up to 4 or five cameras which seems not to bother Motion.app at all!
*OBJECT SELECTION (S):* yes this also seems to have some degrading impact on playout, scrubbing and so on. Interesting I thought.
Workarounds: here are a few things that I know that work to get around some problems of working where Motion.app is extremely SLUGGY in the user interface (UI). Perhaps someone has already noted these on a forum or posted on however I couldn't find them.
So my workflow/practice here is to do the following when I'm manipulating objects (placement, set up, applying filters, adjusting timeline, and so on):
+WORKAROUND #1+: *DISABLE the behaviours* in the layers where you are performing any object manipulation. In fact we have many objects in many layers where the topmost layer (a group of nested layers) contains any behaviours, I would suggest you disable those whilst you work on that particular layer.
It's a very simple stylus click to enable the BEHAVIOURS layers that you have been working on to see what the effect of those behaviours when you want to play them out in the player/canvas.
I have no idea why such trivial behaviours cause my very expensive Mac pro to nearly lock up whilst in Motion.app version 4 and also version 3. Anyway is definitely works on me.
+WORKAROUND #2+: *DESELECT ANY ITEM IN THE CANVAS* (in any view) when attempting to play out whilst in the canvas. Again I don't know why having one or more items (including the camera) insert would have such a drastic impact on the performance of Motion.app to play out what I think is a frivolous range, however this really works for me.
*How to measure the performance or how to monitor the performance/usage of the ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card from MacOS X?* I would like to know exactly what this is doing on my system when one of the CPU cores is pegged out in 100% servicing requests from Motion.app. I can't find utility (which am willing to pay for) that sees the ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card. One I thought would have is an application called atMonitor.app (http://www.atpurpose.com/atMonitor/) which seems to do a pretty good job on my uni body MacBook Pro and wife's Macbook Air.
It would seem that any of the utilities don't seem to see the ATI Radeon HD 4870 or if they do and they initiate commands to it that the ATI Radeon HD 4870 and doesn't respond or send any replies status information. (Beats me I'm not a technical person these days)
Summary: I would be very interested if other people who have a similar if not pretty near exact setup as myself have found these two suggestions useful. I have tried some of these Motion.app projects on my MacBook Pro uni-body and with some difference the MacBook Pro exhibits similar sluggyness to this Mac pro.

    Hong Kong

Mark, I took your advice and reinstall Final Cut Suite Version 3 (including Motion.app version 4.0.1) onto a completely different and I'm used file system including a brand-new install of MacOS X snow leopard 10.6.1, which I believe is the most recent update.
To be clear, I have all the latest Pro Applications updates as well apply to this brand-new system.
So here is the *bad new*s.
*Using exactly the same hardware configuration as I described in this theme of woe, I launched Motion.app V4 .0 .1 and opened up several of the projects that I'm having trouble with that is issued.*
Simply, the symptoms and observation I described in this thread exists with a brand-new installation.
Anyway looks like I have a backup/another instance available Final Cut Pro in case my main production image has trouble.
Once again, as I described initially in this thread, I used the two workarounds to overcome the consistent and overwhelmingly an exaggerated 20 seconds lag on average interactions with Motion.app with the success that I'd described previously.
In another thread back in September 2009, a forum poster mentioned that he felt that the camera framing behaviours were the root of this problem. And to this end he advised converting these behaviours to keyframes using the command-K ("convert to keyframes") to overcome his misery.
This indeed does work very well. So this is the third workaround and I'm starting to use.
Further I have done some more hard comparisons with my 2009 MacBook pro uni-body 2.93 GHz with a standard arrangement of 4 MB of memory and the usual disk internally. *To my great surprise*, I found that the projects that I'm having a lot of trouble with were much more responsive not only with the camera framing behaviours (which I'm not particularly having any trouble with), but the layers that contains a simple transform behaviours such as "motion path", "wiggle", and so on did not seem to bother the Mac book pro.
I watched the CPU cores on the Mac book pro maybe go to 80% while the project was loading, and also whilst I gingerly navigated through the project although feeling a little sluggy was far less in orders of 10 to 20 seconds faster than this Mac pro Nehalem with all the bells and whistles on my earnings embedded within it.
Now I'm starting to wonder, as Andy pointed out, +maybe there is some trouble with the hardware in this system+. I really could not know how to determine if this is the case. However before I draw this conclusion finally, I noticed that there are a lot more people out there with the same consideration as I have that have this same problem. It's not narrowed down to those owners with the ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, however these seem to be the bulk of the people who are trying to do things that are getting a fair amount of forum time (like me).
There certainly seems to be something of an issue as there are some symptom dumps for Motion.app but only one or 2 to over this period that seemed to be triggered by something on this machine. And like many on this forum I gave up reading dumps for a living back in the 1990s.
I would really like to know how I can diagnose this problem before I had to pack this Mac pro up and carted back to the local Apple care centre here in Hong Kong (which means I won't have it forever while, which means no income). Yes I can use my Mac book pro uni-body which is I might end up doing.
_Oh, and this little gem._ I find that if I invoke the "timeline pane/window" (command-7), that it can take up to 2 seconds to refresh the screen. It is amazingly slow and feel like there is definitely something wrong.
If I have a simple motion project by that I mean some simple plates some moving text and no real 3-D except for one little camera Motion.app V 4 seems to work quite okay.
The sets that I'm working in at about eight or nine cameras over the timeline and maybe three or four sets in the project. This is not the work I think especially when most of the moving here is a few objects wobbling around in 3-D space and quick camera moves using the camera framing behaviour.
In summary, having spent what seems to be 40 or 50 hours messing with this issue are not doing anything productive, I've come to the conclusion that there is definitely something wrong with this setup that I have. However having had no problem with that up until now (I know actually I had some problems back in May 2009 with it but it seemed that install a Final Cut Suite version 2 completely fixed it.
And I am totally surprised that my Mac book pro uni-body if pressed can do the job that I want.
Therefore Motion Forum users, I really don't know what else there is to do other than to poke around over time and eventually something will fix this because it is really very frustrating and like many of us on this forum I did endeavour to pay for/put capital funds into a system highly recommended by many that uses Apple production applications than I expected it would work.
By the way, I noticed when I use Nuke version 5 and Shake V 4.1 and even Maya PE, I don't have these issues but will concede that I doubt whether the use applications take advantage directly of the GPU arrangement in the graphics card like Motion.app does.
    That's all I have.
Any other thoughts are most welcome.

  • Can I create a large slideshow in Aperture?

I have about 800 photos I want to make a slideshow in Aperture3.3, add audio, theme. Can this be done, or should I split it up? In the past in iPhoto, iDVD, I have had problems getting large projects to process, they seem to stall. I just recently purchased Aperture, this is my first project. I have USB thumb drive 8GB to transfer the Slideshow to, will this be a problem? I was told I could drag and drop the slideshow to the thumbdrive. We were on a long trip with friends and I want to give this to them as a gift. Thank you for your answer.

Can I suggest that if you're making a large slideshow then you might be best working in iMovie or a dedicated Slideshow app. You'll have much more fine control over what happens - especially with the sound track and the timings.
    Alternatives to Aperture's slideshow include:
    iMovie, on every Mac sold.
Others, in order of price: PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.
