Imovie 09 compatibility with firewires

hello again, does imovie 09 not recognize firewire 9 to 4 pins or is it the camera that is the problem? the camera is a Panasonic NV-GS90 miniDV and my computer is a 10.6.6 macbook pro that i bought almost exactly one year ago. when i click import movie from camera a screen comes up but it is showing the built in isight. on the bottom left is a camera selection but the only choice is for the isight and not for the camera. however when i used a 6 to 4 pin firewire (which i don't currently have) on an older computer a 10.4 imac from about 4 years ago it works. when i did that it was because the 6 to 4 pins firewire didn't connect to this macbook pro, and now the 9 to 4 pins firewire doesn't connect to that imac. before i buy another 6 to 4 pins firewire, can someone confirm whether imovie isn't compatible with 9 to 4 pins firewire, or if imovie 09 isn't compatible with that camera, or if the camera isn't compatible with the firewire. thank you

  • IMovie '08 compatibility with upper end HD cameras?

    Hi All,
I am looking to buy a more upper end HD camera for a project I am working on. I like working in iMovie '08 but cannot find the information from camera manufacturers or from apple about the following cameras and their compatibility with iMovie '08.
    Cameras of interest:
    Canon XL H1
    Canon XH G1
    Canon XH A1
    Panasonic AG-HVX200
Thanks All for the help and yes I know I should be working in final cut
    Tim

The problem arise from HD format.
    Imovie 8 wants a Mac format. It don't accept a MS-DOS format.

  • IMovie 08 compatibility with Contour

I have a brand new video recorder, Contour Roam, with microSD card. The format for this recorder is H.264 in .mov files. I'm using iMovie 08. With iMovie open and recorder connected (USB) and on, it is not recognized by iMovie. Files did load into iPhoto, but are greyed out when I try to export them to iMovie, and greyed out when I try to select them for import from iMovie. I've read iMovie does import H.264 formats; what's up?

I am not sure if it will work or not.
If it will, it would work this way.
Make sure your camera is attached and you can navigate to it in the Finder. (Or at least that you have a card reader attached that can see the card)
In iMovie, click Import/Movie and navigate to the h.264 file on your card.
It has been a few years since I used iMovie 08, so the menu items may be labled slightly diffferently.

  • Problem with iTunes compatability with iMovie and iPhoto

I purchased some music from the iTunes music store and wanted to use that music in a homemade DVD I made. I also have tried using the purchased music when I play a slideshow in iPhoto. In both instances, an error window popped up saying that I needed to launch iTunes and authorize the computer to play the song... Well I bougth the music on the same computer and it is authorized. I typed in the authorization anyways and then after that iMovie and iPhoto both pop up with an error saying that it can't use the file.
Thinking it might just be one song file... I have tried this with many purchased song. I have had the same problem with all of the purchased songs I've tried.
Are some purchased songs not compatable with the iLife applications? How can I fix this problem? I'm running iLife 05 and I have installed all of the updates, including the most recent...
    iTunes 6.0.2
    iPhoto 5.0.4
    iMovie HD 5.0.2

Do you need to update Quicktime as well?

  • Canon HV30 compatibility with FW800?

Hi. I have a Canon HV30 and two iMacs - the first iMac is a 5 year old power-pc based iMac with a 6-Pin FW400 port. The second iMac is about 1 day old - and has just a single 9-pin FW800 port.
The camera is not recognized by the new iMac.
The camera is recognized just fine by the old iMac.
We're using both iMovie and Final Cut Express.
I have taken the entire setup to the genius bar at the apple store and spent 2 hours on the phone with support where we have tested the following:
    1. FW port on the new iMac works fine with FW800 devices (we tested with a disk drive)
    2. FW port on the new iMac works fine with an older FW400 Canon video camera
    3. tried a new 4 pin (from the camera) to 9 pin cable
    4. done every kind of hardware reset they could think of on the computer
They are stumped. They left me with "must be a compatibility issue between this particular camera and the newer FW800 protocol or else it's a hardware problem, though we can't explain why the camera works fine on your older iMac". One last item - when we connect the camera - the Firewire section of the hardware display window says "Unable to list firewire devices" meaning that whatever is coming through from the camera to the computer is totally confusing the computer.
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!!!

    Hi to everybody.
I've the same problem with Snow Leopard and Canon HV30. My machine is iMac 27" I5 with 8GB of RAM.
I checked my firewire port with firewire HardDisk and all was fine. So the firewire HW hasn't any problem.
The camcorder wasn't never detected by Snow Leopard. I've the update S.O. running Mac OS X 10.6.2.
I used several cables 9pin to 4 pin and also with adpters, but the camera was not detected... never detected.
I also tried to connect the camera on 27" Base (Core2 duo) running on shops: the camera was detected without problems. So i think that the problem is on firewire drivers on the operative system.
    Any solution?

  • Unable to Capture HDTV with Firewire

I would like to use the Firewire out capability of my LG HDTV and record video into the computer.
I've connected the G5 and tried using iRecord 0.4 and VirtualDVHS. The TV recognizes the 1394 connection and will often tell me it is transfering data, but no application has received any video. The time counter will increment, but the destination file stays at zero size.
I've downloaded FireWireSDK21 and looked over the applications and some of the source code. Wow, there is a lot to learn to figure out what is going on here.
I've wondered if buying QuickTime Pro will help, I only hesitate to do this because in the past, as soon as I buy Pro, a new QuickTime comes out and I have to do it agian. I'll buy it if it will help. So, Will it help to have QuickTime Pro?
I am also looking at some of AVCVideo applications in the SDK and wonder of these might be closer to what I want to work with. So, With Firewire, how specific are devices, i.e. do I want the G5 to look like a DVR or something else?
Finally, iMovie seems to expect to see a camera and the video from the TV does not seem to look like a camera (iMovie tells me no camera is connected). Is there a plug in or tool to trick iMovie or add capability to it to act as a DVR? I've downloaded FireWireSDK21 and looked over the applications and some of the source code. Wow, there is a lot to learn to figure out what is going on here.
Thanks! This was posted in another forum for a few weeks with no repsonses, this is the last chance.

    Vidi didn't work.
The TV Firewire and Vidi had no compatible modes.
I suspect that iRecord and VirtualDVHS offer the same capability. There is some setting on the Firewire stream that is compatible with none of these programs. Still looking for a solution.
    Thanks.

  • ILife 08 and iMovie 06 compatibility issues?

Sorry if any of this has already been covered in other threads...
Has anyone had a chance to thoroughly test the 6.04 version of iMovie (download version if you install iLife 08) and know what compatibility issues there are?
I.E. How well does iPhoto 08 play with iMovie 06, or iMovie 06 with iDVD 08. Are the third party plugins problematic with v6.04?
From what I saw at the Apple store, iPhoto08 and iDVD08 would be the only apps that I would really want since iMovie08 seems to be a step backwards and iWeb is still lacking in everything that I wanted improved. But I don't want to waste the money to discover all sorts of "gotchas" with trying to get iMovie06 to play nice with the rest of iLife08...
Also, has anyone done an install excluding iMovie08 entirely? Do you still need to download 6.04 if installed this way? Are there any pitfalls?
This is like Deja vu or something...When iLife06 first came out, I installed everything but iMovie and stuck with iMovie05 for a long time cause of all the bugs and how long it took to get the third party plugins working...

Of all the things for people to moan about with iMovie '08, the real unfortunate thing is it's inability to import effects, etc. (essentially your completed movie) from iMovie HD. One could somewhat forgive Apple for this debacle, if only it played nice with iMovie HD. Then it could be everything it's supporters say it is, i.e. "a different app," "a simple app for simpletons in a hurry" (although I find it's lack of tools and compatibility issues more difficult to manage).
...and a lot of us feel like this is the thing we're going to be stuck with going forward.
I keep thinking that something else is going to happen, because this can't be right. I think this diver/video engineer who came up with this concept is suffering from the bends.
Apple doesn't need the money, (as in making us buy Final Cut Pro for decent video editing), trust me, so I don't understand why it would take the PR hit.
iMovie '08 spoofs are already on YouTube, etc.

  • Time Machine backup problems with firewire 800 since Mavericks

Since I installed Mavericks about a week ago, I have had problems with TM not working with my LaCie external drive. At best, it would not back up when the mac was awakened from sleep mode and in use.  When I would open time machine preferences, I would see the "preparing for back up" prompt that would last forever. Not only was it doing that, I have found that it would freeze my mac. I figured this out when I was not able to get my mac to respond from the login screen. It was basically frozen and couldn't log on.  I noticed the back up drive light flickering but nothing would happen even with waiting a long time. I finally figured out that shutting off the TM EHD would unfreeze the mac and it would start functioning normal again. This was happening with my external HD daisy chained to another external drive that contains my iPhoto, iMovie and Itunes files. That drive was also connected to the mac using firewire 800. I tried many different configurations, switched the order the drives were daisy chained, tried different cables and even directly connected the TM drive with firewire 800 to the mac, but the problems still persisted. The strange thing is that when I connect the TM drive through USB, it works flawlesly and no hanging up of the computer. Thats what Ive been forced to do. I have my other EHD connected directly through firewire 800 and it works fine. I only have one firewire 800 port, and since it works fine with my other LaCie drive, it makes me think its not the port or macs hardware? I can only guess this is a Time Machine issue or something wrong with my TM drive?  I have been in contact with LaCie and given them all these details but I have not heard back yet on what they feel the problem is. I thought I would post this to see if anyone else had some experience with this problem.

Forgot to mention I did that. Completely erased and reformatted HD and then reconnected to TM. Didn't help. I did have the mac hang up while installing Mavericks and had to eventually shut off the external drive. It did that to me the firs time I tried to install Mavericks and I lost all my data because it did a clean install after that. I had another back up on CCC so I just restored from there. This time the update to Mavericks transferred my data. I have had TM hang up my mac in the past on occasion, but I was always able to shut down the drive and then the mac would return to normal. Perhaps I should try to erase and reformat again?

  • Connecting Canon HV30 to New Macbook pro with firewire 800

I just received new Macbook pro 2.8 that only has 9 pin firewire 800 connectivity. My previous IMac accepted my Canon HV30 HD video through 4-6 pin firewire 400 with ease, the new laptop will receive the video through 4-9 pin cable but the video color is severely distorted and unusable. Is there a problem with firewire 400 to 800 transfer compatibility?

Yeah, FW400 is compatible with FW800. Only need to find the conversion cable with the correct connectors.Try getting that first and connecting the two, to see if the Mac recognizes it and enables capture. Else visit the camera maker's site to check if they are providing Mac-specific software.

  • Measure Compatibility with Dimensions

    Hello Folks,
In Cognos, We have an option on defining measures compatibility with dimensions inside the cube i.e. incase if the cubes has measures from multiple fact tables along with the dimensions that are not common across fact tables, then the measure that are not compatible with dimensions can be defined, so that the measure value appears as NA when we probe the cube. Just wondering do we have anything euquivalent in Oracle OLAP.

  • Is iMovie 6 compatible with Snow Leopard?

I am using OS 10.5.8, and IMovie 6.  If I upgrade to 10. 6 will it mess up compatibility with the movie program? And will the 3rd party plug ins still work?

I can't speak for the plug-ins - only their vendors can answer that, but iMovie 6HD works in Snow Leopard.
It will run alongside later versions without problems, but I've never tried opening 6HD projects in 8. (6HD is far better than later versions in my opinion).

    yes
However, if your Mac has only Firewire 800 ports, you need an adapter such as one of the following to connect your FW400 external iSight:
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7041ZM/A (I use this one.)
    • Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097
    • To use your iSight's FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:

The Mac side is dictated by the connection:  can be firewire 400, 800 or thunderbolt, whatever the Mac uses.
    The choices are:
4-6 pin cable for a Mac enabled firewire 400.
4-9 pin cable for a Mac using firewire 800
And 4-9 pin cable using a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter for thunderbolt only Mac.

  • Panasonic SD700 Camcorder compatibility with iMovieHD

I am considering the purchase of a Panasonic SD700 Camcorder not just for the reported image quality but because it has sockets for an external mike and headset. My only remaining doubt is its compatibility with iMovieHD. Is is simply a case of transferring the SD card from the camcorder to my Mac or does the camcorder output have to be converted into an iMovieHD-compatible format? Help would be appreciated. Regards.

There have been a number of responses to my initial query but none seems to address it directly. I have both iMovie 09 and iMovie HD. The Panasonic model in which I am interested is the SD700 which only uses SD cards. I want to buy the most compatible camera possible to use with either of the above applications. I am trying to avoid having to do conversions to another format before I can edit. I am a newcomer to video & camcorders trying to avoid an expensive purchasing error. Further guidance would be appreciated and thanks to those who have contributed so far. Victor
