IMovie 09 Cutaway Sound Is Terminally Flawed?

... which kind of kills half the reason I upgraded really. Fantastic feature .. pity it dont work then. Yes, yes. The whole point of the cutaway or video insert edit .. is to quite literally there, insert video clips without sound over the underlaid main video film itself. Great. But, ONLY when it works, mind. Sadly iMovie 09 has been released with a nonfunctioning Cutaway feature. Yet oddly no one seems to have noticed this. Ok lets get to the nitty gritty .... its a nice place to get to and cheap at this time of year. Ahem. Ok what it is ..... is this, readers. Take any clip from your project folder ... anywhere in fact and drop it over the video section as is your wont. Now what SHOULD happen is that the clip you dropped in plays over the area of the underlying video track which you chose. Lavvvvvvly. Oops. Nope. It does drop over. It asks what method of insert you want. You choose Cutaway. It does it. Then ... you choose the Clip Inspector thingy .. choose Audio Properties. Knock the dropped in Cutaway clip volume to Zero. It shows Zero. Great. Lets do it then. Lets play back and see what happens. Yes ... yes the underlying video sound is there ... oh .. wait a mo' .. so is the Cutaway clip's volume too. But how so?. You reduced its volume to nothing a minute ago didnt you?. Lets recheck. Yes .... its still showing zero volume. Oh no. Its still playing both sound tracks. Thats. Not .. so ... good then. In fact to be quite honest, its damned annoying to the point of distraction. And as most folks dont seem to use the function or test it out .. no one is aware of it and consequently no workaround or solution is being done. I want to know if Apple released this and hope no one else has either? I read an old post similar to this about ... iMovie HD!!! And it had remained unanswered. Not looking good is it?. So this is a forlorn plea for folks to put down their cup of tea/coffee/Horlicks and jolly well start up iMovie 09. Chuck a quick clip over the main video. Choose Cutaway. Reduce the volume to ... zero thats it. Now play it back. See? Two track volumes. Just .. awful. How could they do this to us? How can I tell Apple? Will they read it? Will they care. ANY help gratefully received. And yes Im not happy .... I really wanted to use this feature in all future productions and its about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike ... and I dont smoke!. Awaiting your solutions ... or consolations .. in anticipation. Yours Hopefully .... Bruce E Bonus

Right Bill (and other kind respondents on here) .. this is weird. I now retried the whole shebang again. I put a main video underlying track. I pulled over a few mini vid clips and made them all Cutaways... I then reduced their volumes.. it worked!!!!!!! Ok lets try something else. I chucked on two music tracks .. still ok. I then Analyzed for Stabilisation and Smoothed it .. all fine. Then the final test ... place audio synch markers to line up the Cutaways music video style which is the method I first tried. And .. yeah that will **** it all up .. thats the problem... no. It isnt. This is odd! So basically it failed tragically on my first attempt then works fine the second. I dont know whether to be pleased or fed up! Well i will go for the latter ... for now .. but will be wary for the foreseeable future cos it would be heartbreaking to get to the end of the fruits of say a weeks work and find the Cutaway volume was ... still there .. but now its working .. I ve tried a few variations and its fine. The only difference was this re trial only lasted about a minute of testing. The original YouTube version was about 3.40 mins long. Can you say youve done a similar length test and Cutaway usage? Anyway things are looking rosier than they did at this time yesterda1 Cheers the noo

When i export a video from iMovie to my camera roll or to youtube the music i've added sounds distorted. When i watch it in iMovie it sounds fine. Any idea how i can solve this problem.
    Many thanks

Yes, I experience this same problem. The grey doesn't show up until after it is uploaded to Youtube...

  • I created a video in Photo Booth and when I imported it to iMovie, the sound went away.

I have a Macbook pro and have the new OS X Mavericks installed. I have updated iMovie, but there doesn't appear to be a Photobooth update. I need to put 3 videos together in iMovie. Two movies were taken on my iphone and saved on my desktop, the other was created with Photobooth on the same computer. I imported the first 2 videos into iMovie and they work fine. When I tried to import the video created in Photobooth, it said it had to be converted. I converted the video through the computer's option and it played fine on the desktop. Upon importing the converted file into iMovie, the sound disappeared. What am I missing?

    The iMovie forum is here

That's where the knowledgeable ones on that issue hang out. Be sure to include the version of iMovie that you're using too.

  • Does iMovie have Sound and Video Effects?

Before i begin filming my college film i wanted to ask and see if imovie has sound and video effects. what i mean is like, say in the film a gun is shot, well does imovie have a shot going off sound? are there sound effects? or am i asking in the wrong place and see if garageband has these?
also, video effects? i know imovie has like sepia and black and white tones among others but can i add other types of effects? if so, what kinds?
    thanks!

you're looking for specific effects for your specific needs.. why not launching iM on your MacBook.. and look for your own..???
BEFORE doing a "serious" project, I would allway do some test/dummy projects, just to get comfortable with some software ...
    plus:
the two additional audio tracks allow easiely to place small audio snippets, downloaded from anywhere in the web to your movie.. if you need explosions, gunshots, lightsabres, whatever, the iNet is full of sources...
    plus:
you can teach iM lots of new tricks by installing/purchasing 3rd party plug-ins, if you need very special effects , iM does not support out-of-the-box.

  • IMovie Editing & Sound

    Hey
I have imported an Mpeg file into iMovie. I need to cut certain clips from the video to create a new video. e.g. I need to cut from 2 Min 0 Secs to 2 Min 19 Secs, then from 2 Min 47 to 3 Min 9 secs etc. How do I do this? Also I have lost the sound from the video. Can anyone help me please??
    Regards
    Marc

I imported the video from my Sony Digital camera that does videos. It has sound, and plays in Quicktime with audio, but imported into iMovie, no sound. What can I do to fix this?
Don't use QT application for conversion. You need an MPEG-based, third-party application here like MPEG Streamclip (free) or iSquint (free). Both will convert the Sony MPEG-1 and retain the audio. iSquint is easier to use but limits your output to MPEG-4 or H.264 for iMovie '08. MPEG Streamclip is a bit more complicated but allows many more output options and, in effect, is like QT Pro as far as conversions to QT structure and QT component supported outputs go.
Ok I have all the clips I wanted from my video, so now, how do I merge them into 1 video so I can export it and load it onto youtube?
That depends on the software you intend to use. If using iMovie '08, simply import the files to an "Event," move them from the Event window to the Project window in the order you want, edit, add titles, and/or transitions as desired, and then use the "Share" menu option to send them to your YouTube account from within iMovie '08. If you plan to upload them manually, use a "Share" or "Export" option to create the target compression format you want and follow the YouTube web site instructions.

  • IMovie Export - Sound out of synch

I have a 36 minute Project in High Definition that I'm exporting to Quick Time (which I plan to print on DVD). I use lots of titles and background music. The file is 3.59 GB. At about the 21st minute, the sound from a clip jumps forward about 3 sec. in advance. This happens at several intervals in the balance of the movie. I thought this may be a result of a corrupt file, so I split the DVD into two (by copying the Project, then deleting the first Part and doing again and deleting the second Part). Each Part plays perfectly. I then tried to copy and rename the new file, but the new exported file has the exact flaws as the original exported file. Can iMovie / Quick Time only handle files of limited size?
Any suggestions to resolve this problem are greatly appreciated.

in the right forum, you would soon stumble over a solution:
you're using an 'odd' ratio (ex.: 33,7%) of slow-mo in your project. reset any applied slow-mo effect in your Project to a 'given'/the slider fixes to ratio as 25%, 50%, ..

  • IMovie cutaway function on ipad2

Is there a means to perform iMovie picture in picture or cutaway functions on an iPad2  I want to lay an image of a presentation slide over a presentation video without losing the audio. Sorry if the answer is obvious. I'm new to the apple world

It sounds like you have to disable VoiceOver.

  • Import iMOVIE with sound? Export Final Cut Project to Pro Tools?

I am considering the 30 day free trial for Final Cut Pro X. I have a new Macbook Lion laptop.
I made a short film in iMOVIE 09 on my new laptop. I am getting it professionally scored next week. Can I seamlessly transfer iMOVIE project into Final Cut Pro X so that it keeps all my audio tracks? For example, I have natural background sound on many video clips. I have also added "monster" sound effects all over the place. I have voiceover here and there as well. So I am wondering if I import iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X are all the sounds merged (I don't want this) or does the project appear in Final Cut Pro X just like it does in my iMOVIE (video clip with a few audio clips under it)?
Second question - The audio post company would need to export the project from Final Cut Pro X to a software program called Pro Tools. There are a whole bunch of "preferences" needed to be checked off to make sure they get project the way it should be. However, my question is does anyone know if Final Cut Pro X is compatible with Pro Tools Software?
FYI - if I don't do the above I was told I need to make 8-9 copies of DVD of movie in iMOVIE. One would be video with natural sound when I filmed and all other sound turned off. Another DVD would be just voiceover sound and all other sound turned off etc... The audio post company needs each sound isolated so they can manipulate audio levels etc. This sounds like pain in butt which is why I am attempting to see if I can do the above.
    Thanks, Todd

Thank you all for help. Spoke to engineer at audio post company. I told him it sounds like that I can export iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X and keep audio tracks. However, I cannot export Final Cut Pro X project to Pro Tools. Hence, no point in moving iMOVIE project to Final Cut Pro X.
The engineer told me to make Quicktime files of the 4 minute movie with each different audio track. He said as long as the track does not overlap I can have multiple sounds... for example, if my voiceover occurs from 0 sec. to 30 sec and that is only sound then I can keep in a monster sound that occurs from 1 minute to 1 minute 30 sec. etc.
I did forget to ask him one question. One filmmaker noticed that I had stereo monster sounds and mono monster sounds. I would think most people would not notice difference but the filmmaker did. Not sure if this company can fix something like that?
Thanks again for all your help. The thing that is weird about all of this is if I buy the latest and greatest Final Cut Pro X and make my next project from scratch with it I still won;t be able to export using Pro Tools... Sounds like Pro Tools only works with Final Cut.

  • PLEASE help! imovie stereo sound

I have a macbook pro with an apogee duet and a rhode ntk microphone hooked up to it. I can not seem to get imovie to record in both speakers! Does ANYBODY know why? I do not want to record then export to a program to mess around with...if the internal microphone can do it, so can my external one. Any help is appreciated thanks!

Sound appears to be working now today. Weird.

  • Sound import problem into iMovie through sound jack.

I am attempting to transfer sound into iMovie from an external audio tape recorder through the sound import port on a Power Mac G4 mirror door tower running Tiger. When I do this the sound ends up in the time line viewer and looks normal but when I attempt to play it, the volume is very low. It is so low you cannot even make out what it is. Another clip in the time line from another source plays at the normal volume. I also raised the gain on the imported clip to the highest level and still it was very low.
To record the audio above I did the following:
Clicked Media, and then clicked the Audio button at the top of the Media pane.
Clicked the Record button. The recorder was playing the sound and plugged into the audio input jack of the G4.
Is this the correct way to do this? If no what do I do?
    Help Please
    Thanks much!

For a more reliable way to get sound into a Mac, it's worth getting a USB input device (..I use one of these Hercules Muse things, which looks like a giant doorknob)..
..but there are others like the "iVoice" and "iMic".
You can plug in virtually any audio input (..line level or mic level, so there's no impedance-matching problem..) and the audio always enters the Mac at optimum level ..you simply have to choose the USB device as the source of the incoming audio in the System Preferences>Sound pane.

  • IMovie HD sound gets distorted

I have a few teachers who have made iMovies using iMovieHD. When you play the movie in full screen mode after about 5 minutes the sound gets distorted. I thought that this was just an isolated incident and that the movie was corrupt, but now I have two teachers, two computers same issue.
These are being done on MacBooks 10.5.6 with 1G RAM and they have not been converted to quicktime yet. Since iMovie HD is easier for my staff they use it rather than new '08 7.1.4.
    Is that the issue?

    Hi
    a. What kind of audio used ? .aiff, .mp3, from iTunes etc.
    b. Any external hard disk used ? Formatted as ? USB or FireWire ?
    else General troubleshooting list.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it and Close it. Re-try
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.
    Yours Bengt W

  • IMovie 09 sound issue...

    Hey everyone,
I am writing an important paper right now, and the other day, I decided to record myself reading what I have written so far on iMovie. The only thing is, I had enabled access for assistive devices, so the sound did not record. Is there any way I can get the sound back? The biggest problem, is that Friday night, I tried saving the word document and there was an error so word did not save the last 400 or so words that I had written, so the best way for me to get it back would be to listen to the recording I made the other day...
    Hope you can help!!!
    Peace,
    Ian

I have the same problem with 09 when I am transfering video from my camea to the computer. No audio during the import. The audio is there after the import is complete so it is transfering but no audio during the import.

  • IMovie Export Sound Issue

    Hi Guys
Really sorry if this has been posted before but I couldn't find anything similar.
I am running iMovie '09 (v.8.0.5[820]) on a 300GB iMac and have created an iMovie project of a snowboarding holiday we had with some friends.
The project runs really well in iMovie and I was really excited to export/share it so I could burn a DVD using iDVD.
Unfortunately 5 of the 20 chapters export with distorted sound. By this I mean that the resultant files seem to play ok until the 4th chapter which plays as per the project but with an EXTRA layer of audio from other scenes within the project. As I say all other audio plays fine but just with this extra audio in the background.
Which reminds me, in 'Share' I have tried sharing with iDVD, itunes and Media Browser as well as 'export movie' with the same end result (same places).
    Thanks
    InMyOwnPlace

Alright, I tried but it still doesn't work. Its still doing it in the same exact spot every time. If it helps, I'm not exporting using QuickTime, I'm exporting it using the Command E option and exporting it as a HD movie. Any more suggestions?

  • IMovie App Sound issue

Does anyone know if the iMovie app for iPhone 4 has a way to level out the sound like the real versions of iMovie do?
I recorded a video using the iPhone but there was a lot of background noise. You can see what I mean here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D26_4tGKTOM
On a sidenote, I noticed that on the iPhone 4 itself I was able to add 1901 by Phoenix to another video clip I filmed and edited on my iPhone. Wouldn't this by copyright issue?

Alright, I tried but it still doesn't work. Its still doing it in the same exact spot every time. If it helps, I'm not exporting using QuickTime, I'm exporting it using the Command E option and exporting it as a HD movie. Any more suggestions?

  • IMovie/iLife Sound Effects working in FCPX but no sign of original folders?

I posted this question a couple of weeks ago but received no resolution.
    PROBLEM:-
iMovie and iLife Sound Effects are present and working in FCP X 10.1.3 but there is no sign of their original folders on my Mac HD
    DETAILS:-
I have searched in Mac HD>Library>Audio>Apple Loops>Apple and numerous other places.
I have done Spotlight and Finder searches using both the folder names and some of the individual loop names to no effect.
I have used DiskWave to list every file and folder on my computer  .  .  .  still no sign.
The computer is a new (2012) Mac mini, Yosemite with very little on it.
The folders were there originally when I bought it with Mavericks installed last month.
I upgraded to Yosemite but as I suffered a few minor bugs I created a new partition and reinstalled Mavericks.
It was whilst using Mavericks that I noticed FCP X could not access the sound effects and a search of both partitions suggested they had disappeared.
However, when I restarted in Yosemite and opened FCP X, the sound effects were there and working  in the music browser but were no longer visible anywhere on the hard drive.
This has to rank as a greater mystery than the Mary Celeste!

    PROBLEM SOLVED !
I have just been using DiskWave for another matter and accidentally discovered the whereabouts of the missing iMove and iLife sound effects.
    iMovie>Contents>Resources
So now they actually reside in the iMovie app itself.
So what caused them to disappear from the "Apple Loops" folder?
I can only guess but I suspect that the switch occurred when I updated iMovie to the latest "Yosemite" version.
Presumably Apple has decided that the best place for these loops is in the iMovie app  .  .  .  it's just a pity they didn't tell anyone else!
If anyone would like to test this theory for me I would be most obliged  .  .  .  assuming you have an old version of iMove and are running Yosemite, simply update iMovie and look for the new location of the sound effects.
