IMovie 09 export fails - exported movie stalls, parts missing
Hi there fellow mac users,
I've got a problem here, and it seems like I am the only one (I've searched extensively for a solution). I'm working on an iM project using 1080i AIC imported video, shot using a JVC HD7. The .TOD files the HD7 produces were converted to AIC, and then imported as 'Large - 960x540' in iM '09. So far so good, the .mov files ie the footage is all very playable and of wonderful quality. iM '09 has a really easy interface and offers anything I need to edit a movie. So now I was ready to export. The first attempt I made was to export a Large movie via the Share menu.
Here the problem started. The export took about 2 hours, which isn't too long considering the length of the movie (about 1:20 hrs). But the .m4v file does not play as expected. The movie stalls at the points where clips meet (without any effects or transitions, so just hard cuts). I have been trying different export formats, and somehow there's allways something wrong with them. Also very strange is that an .m4v export was only 1.26 hrs in duration and a .mov export was 1.11 hrs, so it even has some footage missing. Is anyone else having this problem? Or does anyone have any suggestions in how to solve this issue? All the software on my 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro is up to date, permissions have been repaired etc.
thanks,
Koen
I normally use the "no transition" transition for about 90% of my clips, and iMovie handles it great.
If I had to guess, the problem is related to the length of your movie. But it could also be related to export settings.
First, reboot your Mac. Then...
1)
I would first right-click on the title of your movie, and select DUPLICATE. This will give you a way to test without hurting your current file.
Then, in the duplicate copy, delete every thing except the first 15 minutes of the movie. Share that in Large, and see how it looks. If it looks good, it is probably the length of the movie that is an issue.
2) If you are using the SHARE/iTUNES or SHARE/TO WEB GALLERY using the large preset, you should be fine. If you are using SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME and changing the settings, that could be an issue. Check your settings for Keyframe. It should probably be automatic or every 24 frames. Also check data rate. It should be 5000 to 8000 kbps, but could go higher to get better quality. If it is too low, it could cause this issue.
There is nothing in the iMovie architecture that would say it cannot make a theatrical length movie, but in practice, many people report having issues when movies get much longer than 30 minutes. My guess would be that somewhere over 30 minutes you create so many swapfiles and there is so much swapping that iMovie starts behaving unpredictably. For example, iMovie might require that more pages are swapped in than there is real memory available. (But I'm no programmer - so discount that by 80%). There is a difference in the iMovie 09 architecture from iMovie 6. iMovie 6 would render all effects, titles, transitions, audio, etc as you were editing, so you are always waiting for something to finish rendering, iMovie 9 allows you to edit fast and apply all the choices at rendering time.
Probably 95% of the people who use iMovie are making home videos of 5 to 10 minutes, or exporting multiple short movies (say up to 20 minutes) to iDVD which will be accessed in a menu structure. It is rare for someone to want to make a theatrical length movie. When people do, they are probably combining multiple logical movies in order to "fill" a DVD.
My first advice would be to divide this movie up unto chunks of up to 30 minutes. If you need them in one movie, stitch them back together later using QuickTime PRo by putting the in a .mov container.
A third thing to try would be to SHARE/to IDVD and see if you get any better results.
If you are making a real theatrical movie, invest in FInal Cut Express or Final Cut Studio, which handles large movies and has tools to process them in chunks.

IMovie 11 Exporting Movie and No File and External Drive Falling Asleep
Help! Had a frustrating day and night with iMovie, which has been happening a lot lately.
We are making a highlight video for my son from his many sports events which are on a 3TB fixed external drive and a 2TB portable one. After putting the highlight video together with clips from both drives it is time to Export the movie which I am doing to the 3TB Drive. However after completion, there is no file anywhere. Upon taking the same steps with same filename, there is no warning about existing file. I have tried to export to local drive on Mac as well.
Also, if I do a higher quality export it takes a while and the external portable drive falls asleep. Any way to keep it awake without sitting there and accessing the drive manually. I looked in the drive settings through the mac and it does not tell it to put the drive to sleep. In hindsight we should have had all videos on the 3TB drive but I am afraid to move them now.
And...we put some arrows in pointing to him with a freeze frame and PIP. The arrows are there when I select them manually but don't appear when running through the movie as we preview the entire footage.

Deleting iMovie files & exported movies causes errors in all of iLife
I just went through quite an ordeal...
In an attempt to clean up some space, I deleted a bunch of my iMovie project files and movies after backing them up (files in the default Movies folder). I have deleted iMovie projects before with no issues.
This time, it caused errors in iDVD, iMovie, and iPhoto...it would say: "Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again." It would say this over and over and over again and often completely hang up my application so that I would have to force quit. This would repeat itself over and over...
I read about this in other forums and erased .plist files in User > Library, etc...This solved the problem for other people, but it kind of made it worse for me. Long story short, I ended up having to restore from Time Machine my entire system just to get iLife working again... I also searched for Aliases and externally referenced libraries or files, and I do not have any.
So now I have those files again. I want to delete them again. But I'm afraid! (P.S. This may also be related to deleting the Aperture Trial Library in the Photos folder...I am also posting about that to the Aperture forum.)
Does anyone know what the deal with this is? How come before I did not have problems but am now? How do I safely delete iMovie files without having this happen again?
THANK YOU!iMovie is a non-destructive editor, meaning that all original clips are maintained in the folder, even after editing. Until you render the movie to DVD, all the original files are still "in the background". Kind of hard for me to explain. Others here could give more technical details. You would have to delete your movie from the folder to regain all the hard drive space.
If your idea is to archive your movies, a better method is to record them back to tape. Otherwise, get an external drive to store the finished movies and then delete the original files.
One word of caution about emptying the iMovie trash. This has been known to cause problems with a work in progress and it is generally advised to leave the iMovie trash alone until your project is finished and burned to a DVD. -
File Write Error upon Export Movie
Using iMovie 9.09 under OSX 10.8.5
My sequence of events:
1. Import from Canon digital video camera
2. Create a project from the imported clips (no edits - it is an athletic event)
3. Share to iDVD
4. In iDVD create a disk image, then exit iDVD
5. Back in iMovie, Share>Export Movie (readying to upload to YouTube)
Size to Export: HD 720p
Filename is unique from any other used in this sequence
After rendering, get the following error:
So far, my only recourse is to quit iMovie, and restart the computer.
Any ideas?

How do I export from IMovie to Wondershare Creator to Make DVD and share hour long movie when I am unable to "publish" movie on Media Browser of IDVD because the error code "not enough room in heap Zone/ " appears and function is aborted.
I shortened the movie, that is no cure...Correcting date info on clips does not pertain. Why would Apple throw roadblocks in your way without solving problems they create?
A techie made an appointment on the phone and was totally incapable of addressing the problem.
What is a heap zone????Instead of Share to Media Browser, what happens if you try Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large size) and save it to the Desktop?
If that fails try Share Menu > Export using QuickTime...
Then pick Movie to QuickTime Movie, then click on Options... which is just to the right of Export
Under the Video section click on Settings...
Then in the pulldown menu at the top, titled Compression Type: Choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Then click OK. And click OK again, and save it to the desktop. Once the .mov file is created, you can import that into iDVD and most likely it will work in Wondershare Creator if you prefer to use that instead. -
How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts? Additionally, what does 'File' 'Finalize Project' do?

What does iMovie (09) do when I select "Export Movie"?
I can't believe this isn't an FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I love iMovie but, as many people realize quickly, part of what makes iMovie so simple to use is that it assumes certain things so that the endusers don't have to worry about them.
Well, I guess "Export Movie" is one of those, but I'm curious - what does iMovie do with my video when I use that option? I realize, for example, that "Export with Quicktime" allows me to select quite a few settings for the export, but that's not the case for iMovie, except for being able to select the exported movie resolution.
What other settings does iMovie assume? Thanks, everyone! I apologize for being unintentionally vague. To take a step back, my source is video shot with a Canon HF200 in FXP mode which records in 1920x1080 resolution.
The root of my question is curiosity around what iMovie does to my video when I'm burning to DVD, and specifically, I noticed that there's a difference in the quality of the video when I do "Share to iDVD" versus "Export Movie" (then dragging the project into my iDVD template).
I had added some text titles to parts of my video and noticed the "Share to iDVD" caused the text to be more "jaggy". Using "Export Movie" appeared to create DVDs that didn't look jaggy, so naturally, I thought "Export Movie" was the better way to burn DVDs, which then started making me wonder what magic happens when that option is chosen.
Subsequent to my posting this question, I then ran into this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2214292&tstart=90 and learned that iMovie drops half the lines in a frame when exporting.
- Is this what was happening when I use "Share to iDVD"? Was iMovie dropping half the lines which caused my video to look jaggy? Pictures of the videos below. In these pictures, the DVD was being played by a progressive scan DVD player on an LCD TV (if that makes a difference).
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i211/joelq/DSC_1679.jpg
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i211/joelq/DSC_1680.jpg
- I got even more confused when I read that iMovie only does this when exporting to 960x540 or smaller. :-/ If that's the case, then is "Export Movie" exporting to a larger resolution which explains why the video quality seemed better, i.e., the video didn't appear jaggy?
- And finally, when shooting 1920x1080 60i video, what's the best export process to get the best quality DVDs? Is this possible with iMovie 09 (or even HD)? Or do I need to upgrade to FCE? (Or should I just invest in the eBook :-)?)
Thanks everyone! -
Export movie on iMovie lossless
Anybody knows how to export AVCHD movies lossless, I mean without conversion when you are exporting movies. I am converting AVCHD (mts) to mov before import.
The iMovie is the latest version, 11.
LuizIn fact, the final video edited is for my personal file,. I took many movies from HD camera, edit them, and have one final file edited. I used to do this process with PMB (Sony software) which does the edition in perfect way: you can cut or join parts of video without any kind of conversion or loss. Unfortunatelly it works only in Windows plataform.
I really don't know how they didn't release this software for Mac. It is too sad having a Mac and be impossible to edit AVCHD without quality loss.
I am wondering to install Paralles and Windows, just to be able to do this lossless (very disappointed).

I'm having trouble with iMovie crashing when I Finalize Project or Export Movie.
Every time I Finalize Project or Export Movie my iMovie crashes.
This has only started happening recently, I was creating movies and finalizing and exporting with no problems before.
I'm doing exactly the same thing - creating simple short movies with jpg stills and an mp3. It's all working fine until I Finalize or Export, then it crashes.
Can anybody help, I've tried every thing I can think of. I've installed the latest version from the Mac Store, but it still happens. I'm on an iMac with OSX 10.7.5

"I continued to talk to other Apple Mac users on iMovie….Interesting to have found out that their movies were made using iDVD without any known issues as yet…Looking at the results from Apple Support Forum and Youtube, problems appears to be when NOT using iDVD. I and many others can't understand how these many technical problems were overlooked by the programmers of iMovie. One would have thought iMovie problems have been iron out prior to getting rid of iDVD. By the way when I first contacted Apple Support back on 16th Nov, I was told I need to RE-INSTALL my computer…..that I did and in the process my iDVD was removed and never was re-installed.
May I suggest you delegate a junior person or someone string together a project consisting over near 1700 images, approx. 25mins of video footage, titles and including with and without transitions then export the project.
I am still in the dark as to what is being done about this extended non result. I am not sure if is known by the people who is in charge of this iMovie programme. it would be nice to get some sort of feedback. Not sure if I should refer this to a third party to do the testing?? I am sure Apple's competitors would love to make a mockery of this.
There has to be a time frame for this to end, as I and many others can't simply sit here in the dark and wait for someone to come back for a solution, this could be months or years who knows. As you can appreciate I am not the only user anxiously waiting for a solution.
I guess I am in a way representing other worldwide users in pursuing a solution on this matter ASAP. I therefore ask you to please make this a priority if this is at all possible.
Many thanks."
I've been corresponding to them since Fri 16th Nov on and off without a solution. -

I have the same problem. I'm using Mavericks OS and latest iMovie. Both downloaded last week. I save the movie into File (as directed) and QuickTime

Trouble "exporting movie" from iMovie when uploading to You Tube....
Hi, I have never had a problem with uploading my projects from iMovie to You Tube off my iPad. I have about 32GB's available on my iPad 3. I only have about 5 projects and never had any hassle going thru the upload process? Now, with my latest project complete (only about 4.5min) I click on upload to You Tube, it then says "exporting movie" as it normally says, but doesn't go any further - just hangs there?
Any help appreciated!well... for anyone else experiencing something similar, here's how I worked around it :
1. Once I have edited my video in the iMovie app and I want to publish it, I then select the publish option, and then choose YouTube as the place I'd like to publish it.
2. I then fill out all the fields in the 'Publish to YouTube' form, as if I was about to publish it.
3. I then select CANCEL, to cancel out of the 'Publish to YouTube' form.
4. I then exit the iMovie app, and force it to close by going into the app dock and forcing it to close there.
5. I then re-open the iMovie app, and choose the video I want to publish, select the publish option, choose YouTube as the place I'd like to publish it.
6. The fields are now already populated with the information I had entered previously, although I still need to select the video quality and also whether it should be public or private.
7. I now click "publish" and it publishes correctly, with all the correct meta-data / title / description etc. attached.
This has worked for me consistently over the past couple months now,
Hope this helps anyone with a similar issue.
Cheers,
Nick -
Imovie 11 Can't Export Movies NOT ENOUGH ROOM IN THE HEAP ZONE!
I have plenty of space on my hard drive, no other programs are running, and the video being exported is only 6 minutes and 57 seconds long.
I am working on a short film and 90% of the time that I try and export it in 720 I get an error, because there is not enough room in the heap zone. Then after I restart the computer if I am lucky I can get it to export 1 out of 10 trys. It has nothing to do with the title I give the video.
I need the video exported in 1080, but it gives me the same error EVERY TIME! Even when I export to quicktime and use various settings I keep getting the same heap zone error. What is the deal!?! I have exported an hour long documentary and didn't have this problem. I erased all my previous projects and events and still I get this error
UNABLE TO EXPORT MOVIE
The movie could not be exported because an error occurred. (Not enough room in the heap zone /)
HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!I have the same problem when trying to export a 720P movie to iTunes. Reboot did not help nor did renaming the project. I have an older MacPro with dual 3.0s, 11 Gb Ram and slightly less than 1Tb free space on the boot drive. This is a software issue, not a hardware problem. Apple please fix the myriad of problems with iMovie 11. My productivity has ground to a halt with my 4 month old iLife Software. How did this software ever pass muster!!!!! I can't believe anyone would purchase the new version of Final Cut given the horrible product you've included with the last iLife Set. This is an example of why I left the Microsoft Windows community. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!! I usually create 4 to 5 movies a month for the flying community I live in. I have completed one since January, and it was a mess due to software glitches. My attempt to re-render an old iMovie 9 creation has been met with failure. I have projects backing up and really have no desire to finish them or create others as iMovie 11 is no longer fun since it is broken. I'm tired of iPhoto 11 and iMovie crashing or not working and the reason for spending more on an Apple product no longer exists. Outdated expensive hardware and buggy software. Time to sell my APPL stock like Bob Mansfield, You're ignoring your core supporters and are living off the hype of the iPhone/iPad. The poor economy has allowed your "halo effect" to endure many recent short-comings - (Mobile Me (how slow and expensive can it be to stream a personal home movie - but don't worry you don't need Blu-Ray)), Mail (why do I keep getting duplicate emails in my drafts folder? and why is it always losing my password - just like Mail on my iPhone), Never providing a stable video card for 2006 Mac Pros, Crippled iPhone 4 for Verizon, no iPad Flash support, iLife Crapware)............where's the Tylenol!!!!! I need it since I promised an iMovie project for a friend's memorial that I am now unable to deliver.

/NiccoHello there, averypamby.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great information in regards to sharing/exporting your video in Motion:
Motion 5: Export a QuickTime movie
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH16623
Export your project as a movie file
Choose Share > Export Movie (or press Command-E).
Choose an export format from the Export pop-up menu.
This menu provides a list of codecs.
Choose an option from the “Open with” pop-up menu:
Do Nothing: The movie is not opened after the export is completed.
Open with QuickTime Player: The movie is opened in QuickTime Player.
Open with Compressor: The movie is opened in Compressor (if installed on your system).
Choose an option from the Include pop-up menu: Video and Audio, or Video Only.
If you’ve set In and Out points in the Timeline, use the Duration pop-up menu to choose whether to export the sequence or the portion between the In and Out points.
To specify additional Motion-specific options, click Render.
For more information about options available in the Render pane, see Render settings.
To see details about the file to be output, click Summary.
Click Next.
Enter a name and choose a location for the exported file, then click Save.
Motion renders and saves your movie.
Important: The Export Movie command does not use background rendering, so you must wait until rendering is finished before you can continue to work in Motion.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Export or Share part of your movie
So in FCP X you can not mark an IN and OUT in your timeline and export part of your movie? What is the deal with that?
any ideas or suggestions on going around that, I need to brake the movie into parts and export them, do I need to bring it into FCP 7
Any Ideas ?Thanks for the update Tom but what has happened to my post?
I posted the link for the thread containing your answer but just your answer has appeared, almost as though you had responded to the OP, apart from the date?
Weird!
Is there any way of removing the compound clip from a project and returning it to its original status?
Somehow I seem to be posting in 2 different threads!

IMovie for my iPad and iPhone will not export movies how do I fix this?
iMovie for my iPad and iPhone will not export movies how do I fix this?
Same here. Have exported a handful of movies before..faced this issue for the first time a few days ago. What footage are you trying to edit and export? (E.g. Shot with camera app, other social media apps like Snapchat, Vine, Instagram?)
I did some troubleshooting..
I was putting together all saved videos from Snapchat.. no luck. Export screen comes up, but progress bar doesn't move.
Mixed some footage in there shot with actual iPhone camera app.. no luck.
Removed all Snapchat footage.. it worked straight away.
BUT ... it would make sense if I didn't just compile a bunch of Snapchat vids a few weeks ago and export them just fine?
So it's something to do with the actual footage I assume?
