Imovie 09 fails to import h.264 .mov file 1280x528

Hi,
When I import a .mov file it seems to process but doesn't actually bring the video into imovie.
Here's the file specs:
.mov
h.264, 1280x528 millions
AAC, 2 channels 44100 Hz
I've also tried with an mp4 (mpeg4 codec) and am mp4 (h.264 codec) of the same clip and none of them import successfully.
They were all converted from a .mkv file using iFunia MKV converter.
Thanks,

Can You get one movie file onto DeskTop
• select it - and press cmd+I [apple-key and I-key]
or - better
• open it with QuickTime-player
(YES it can open many many more Video-Codecs than iMovie can use)
- open Inspector - o press cmd+I [apple-key and I-key]
Now read
• Formatted as (Video-Codec) :
• No. of Frames per second :
could look like this (or about) :
and my QuickTime-player (pro) can convert this to AIC if needed - or at least as StreamingDV as this is the best choice for me and my projects.

  • IMovie still fails to import H.264 properly

With the release of 10.6.3 and iMovie 8.0.6 I made a new try importing H.264 1080i50 from my Samsung HMX-H105. See the following thread for the old discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1997748
    In the current release,
    1) Importing without optimizing, the aspect ratio is wrong inside iMovie as before
    2) Importing with Optimize Full gives an AIC file with the correct resolution
    3) Importing with Optimize Large gives an AIC file with the wrong resolution (1706x504)
Problems with 2) are that the conversion takes time, quality is degraded and file size is increased.
Playback in QT Player has changed in 10.6.3. Motion blur is now added and the interlacing is a lot less visible when I play the original files from the camera.
Does anyone know which parts of H.264/AVC are properly implemented in iMovie?
Can I add anything to my system to alter the way iMovie handles H.264?
Are there other editing software for the Mac with better H.264 support?
    /jonas

This is me replying with a different AppleID. It's a long story...
Anyway, thanks for your help. I converted to AIC using MPEG Streamclip as you described. The resulting looks the same or very close to the the original when played in QT, and the file can be imported into iMovie without the problems that I get with the original H.264 file.
So, I wonder why QT and MPEG Streamclip can read the file while iMovie fails to do it properly?
About Apple's list of camcorders. The Samsung HMX-H105 is very recently released and I would have been surprised if it had been on Apples list. Surely there must be cameras NOT on the list with H.264 files that import to iMovie? It would be nice to understand better why some H.264 file import ok and some do not.
Have Apple published the H.264 profiles and levels that it is compatible with? Isn't Quicktime used for importing?
Will going through AIC significantly decrease the quality of my recordings, it will be a re-compress using MPEG2, right? I noticed that IMovie was a lot snappier working with AIC compared to H.264 (at least with my partially failed import), that is a plus. The file size, of course, is not.
From MPEG Streamclip, I get the following file info of the original. Is there anything in it that stands out as peculiar? Why 25 fps and not 50i or something?
    Stream: HDV_0004.MP4
    Path: ~/Desktop/HDV_0004.MP4
    Duration: 0:00:43
    Data Size: 89.34 MB
    Bit Rate: 17.09 Mbps

iMovie 9.0.9 is the latest version you can run unless you upgrade to the Mavericks operating system (OS 10.9).
Your profile (at the bottom of your post) mentions OS 10.4.11 (Tiger) which is why I mentioned that.
The list of supported cameras is not comprehensive  but articles such as:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/make_canon_eos_6d_h_264_1080p_footage_e ditable_in_fcp_imovie
do indicate that conversion is needed before import, at least for iMovie 9.  Although it's a recent article it doesn't specifically mention  iMovie 10.
iMovie 10 has a very much changed interface and a different folder structure so upgrading is not trivial so I would not advise rushing into upgrading.
Maybe someone with knowledge of this camera can help.
    Geoff.

  • Imovie wont import an mp4 movie file

Can't figure out why my imovie won't import an mp4 movie file. It's done it before. The font for the file I want to import appears in faded letters and won't highlight to be selected. ????? Any suggestions?

    .mp4 is just a media-container, or wrapper.
it doesn't tell us nor iMovie what's inside.
open the .mp4 with the Quicktime Player, hit ctrl-i .. tell us about 'Codec'

We will customize a very detailed reply, but
    (a) What are the properties of your source media?
    (b) What did you or the program set as the project preset to match the properties of the source media?
    (c) What specific requirements do you have for this H.264.mov export file?
File size can be a compromise between bitrate, file size, and quality.
    Thanks.

  • Why can't I import my ppt.mov file into iMovie?

I created a ppt movie, added music and now have a file that I want to import into iMovie. When I hit the browse button, my ppt.mov file shows up but it's light and I can't select it.

You can export from powerpoint as a MOV file. You must take care that Powerpoint does not add any extra tracks like a manual advance track. This would cause iMovie to not be able to edit it. There are several parameters you can change in the "Options" when exporting as a movie from PPT, but it is not obvious to me which of these might introduce the offending track.
The most straightforward way (or most likely to succeed) is to export from Powerpoint as photos. You can select it to Save as Photos as a series of JPEG images. These jpegs can then be imported into iPhoto for easy import into iMovie. You can add the music in iMovie as well.
I guess the question is, what are you adding in iMOvie? That might help us give better advice.
Also, if you use the iWork App "KeyNote", it gives you the option of exporting to QuickTime without a manual advance track.) Keynote can import PPT. If you do a lot of this, Keynote might be worth the money. Else, just import the photos.

  • Can FCP recognize Canon EOS 550D H.264 mov files?

  • Importing MP1 (.mpg) movie files?

I've just started using iMovie08, and athough it was pretty impressive at pulling in all my home movies that were .Mov files, it hasn't pulled in the older movies that were recorded as .mpg files.
iPhoto seems to recognise them just fine, but iMovie won't let me import.
The only thing I've tried to limited success is to convert them in Quicktime, but then the sound track doesn't come through..?
    Please can someone help?
    Thnks

Now have a different problem.... I've imported them into iMovie, but when viewing these videos iMovie frequently crashes (over 5x in the last 10 minutes) and the viewing of the thumbnails is jerky.
Have not had such problems. Believe most crashing problems were traced to missing upgrades and/or conflicts with certain older QT components which needed to be updated. Only crash I've had was attempting to open iMovie '08 after about 72 hours of batch processing. Never found out what caused the crash, but re-booting the computer seemed to fix whatever was wrong. Jerky playback may or may not be indicative of more serious problems. I would make a quick project export and see if the "jerkiness" is limited previewing or affects the final output. Depending on outcome, I might check thumbnail/cache files for possible problems/corruption.

  • After loading k-lite can't view converted h.264(mov) files on quicktime

Got an hd camcorder for christmas that records in the h.264(mov)format. Could only play files on quicktime 7 but processor to slow and video stuttered and lagged audio. Downloaded binks radtools to convert file to avi, which played farely decent in quicktime. Decided to try k-lite codec pack to see if i could improve on this. While instaling, k-lite told me "the preferred source filter that "h.264" is set to is invalid" and asked if it could remove it from the windows registry. thinking this could be problem i click yes. k-lite did not improve viewing with its instaled player and when i tried to play my converted file in quicktime i get only white screen but good audio. removed k-lite but still get same results with converted avi file in quicktime. (I think the preferred source removed was a nero application)
Does anyone have any ideas on how to repair this? I want to purchase quicktime 7 Pro to convert files to avi but not if i am going to get the same playback results.

If you can't find it in QuickTime Pro, ask the person that created the files.
FWIW, you'd be better off just capturing the DV tapes in FCP directly.

  • Cannot import Canon 500D .MOV files into Lightroom 4.1

I've seen a few problems on here about similar issues.
I've imported .mov files before, but a perfectly valid (short, circa 10 seconds) .MOV clip just will not preview or import into Lightroom 4.1 on my Win7 x64 system.
The movie will play fine directly from the card, but just won't import!
    Any ideas, chaps?

  • Cisco Prime Infra 2.1 fails to import an image from file

We have a standard Cisco Prime Infrastructure 2.1 install. The software repository has been built up by importing the IOS images from the discovered network devices. To implement netflow capabilities on some 3750X switches we need to upgrade the IOS on the chassis and the NM card C3KX-SM10G. I was able to download from Cisco Support the 3750X IOS .tar file and import it from my machines local file system. However, the modules tar file c3kx-sm10g-tar.150-2.SE6.tar fails on the upload from my local file system. When I look at the import rob results they are as follows:
      Image collection from source     SUCCESS
Copying Image to Staging Location     SUCCESS
      Copying Image to Repository     FAILURE
I've tried to import just the .bin file but this also fails at the same stage as above.
I've also tried to scp the file directly into the backend file structure with no success into the folder /opt/CSCOlumos/conf/ifm/swim/jobs with the other images (oddly noticed the above .tar file for the 3750X isn't listed with the other .bin files - although is available through the webGUI).
I need to distribute the NM .tar file across multiple switches and I'd prefer to use Cisco Prime for the job. Any help would be gratefully received.
    Thanks.

I had (still have?) the same problem with it not copying the image over. I put in a ticket and they told me to upgrade to Prime Infrastructure 2.1-Device Pack 4  pi_2.1device_packs_4-40.ubf which helped but it still fails sometimes.
I had read a post from another thread about going through software image management to distribute and that seems to work a little better, but still fails sometimes.
So I think that there are still quite a few issues in Prime that need worked out.
We have over many switches that need software upgrades and I was hoping to do it quickly through Prime but I don't want to send out more then one image at a time to switch because I don't want it to fail. So it's a drawback right now, just doing one at a time to make sure it takes.

  • How to import 720p 60fps .mov files in premiere pro cs 5.5

    hello,
i have recorded a movie with my action cam, i recorded at 720p 60fps and the movie is about 24 min and 1,82GB. I'm trying to import these files, but i get this error message "The importer reported a generic error."
Now i cannot import these movies. Does anyone have a solution for my problem? Or do I need to convert my files to another format (i don't hope so, it's 10 mb/s... i don't like to wait)
also i tried it with a movie that is 1080p 30fps, also a .mov file and from the same camera. This reports the same error message, so that isn't working either.
i hope somebody has a solution for my problem!
    on forehand, thanks!
PS. sorry for my bad english :l

Go to Edit>Preferences>Media...and set the Indeterminate Media Timebase to the proper frame rate for the media, then Import the files as an Image Sequence.

  • Importing and Editing .MOV Files

    Hello,
I would like to know if After Effects can edit .MOV files or should these type files be converted to another format? I imported a .mov file to After Effects and although I can view the movie in the composition window. I don't see any other information that would allow me to edit the video. No layer info.
Can someone fill me in on why this is happining?
    Thank You
    Tontyp

    Hi,
Thank you all for your advice and help. I only wanted to change some text in a video template that was created with the Adobe After Effects program. As you said it is proving to be more trouble than it is worth. I will go back to the drawing board so to speak and start from the begining  Mean while I will just create a new video with another software. I do thank you very much for your input as it may have saved me hours of wasted time.
    Thanks Again,

  • Animation sent as a group of still images, import as a movie file?

    Hi
I have been sent an animation to use in a edit, but it has been delivered as a large group of still images, instead of a QT file. I was wondering if there was a way that the images can be imported so that they become a movie file that can be treated as such on the timeline, or if I have to spend the time assembling them back together on a sequence and then use that as a segmented file on another sequence?
I guess I am just trying to save time and the hassle of doing a lot of boring work. Any help will be much appreciated.
    neil

    Hi...
If you have QT pro you can import the image sequence and then export as mov.

  • H.264 mov files from Canon 5D Mark II running at incorrect speed?

What is causing the mov. files recorded at 25 fps Imported from a Canon 5D Mark II
PAL to run at 2.5 fps on the Timeline of Premiere Pro ? And it looks like it.This all happened after the Firmware Upgrade 2.0.4
The camera is recording at the right speed according to the LCD and it runs correctly in Premiere Elements ?.
Message was edited by: Bob Dix

Interesting approach., Canon seem to think it might be the camera ? Which I
doubt because the mov H264 files are easily opened in Premiere Elements and
work very well., I am reluctant to send it back as I think the Problem is in
    Premiere but, where ?

Ps . The problem is not fixed, Canon Australia is looking at the issue, the Canon EOS 5 D Mark II is recording at 25 fps. They believe the problem is within Adobe Premier Pro ? Perhaps even a computer problem any ideas.
