IMovie '09 - Filter by Keywords

Something very strange has happened when using keywords. First I have added a number of different keywords, I have 32 keywords including the default ones (by the way, how do you get rid of those?).
At some point something has happened which means I cannot filter anything by keywords, because none of them are displayed in the filter window. I can happily add keywords to clips, but when I open the Keyword Filter there are no keywords!
What's happened and how do I fix it? I've got several projects all nicely keyworded, but now i need to use the keywords to find the bits I need from each project for a new project.

I didn't realise you had to be in an event to use the keyword filter - it would be better to be able to search all events by filter e.g. find all my video od "xxx" across multiple events

  • Filter by keyword bug?

Has anyone else noticed this bug in iMovie '09...
After adding some keywords try to use the 'Filter by Keyword' feature, you'll notice that it's impossible to turn the topmost green light on. In other words it's impossible to 'only show clips that are tagged with whatever happens to be the first keyword in the list'.
You can only 'omit' the topmost keyword from view (red light).

I've noticed this as well - surely this can be sorted in a software update? What are your plans Apple?

  • Filter by keywords

Does anyone know if it is possible for the filter by keywords list of keywords to be organised in an hierarchical structure as is the Keywords HUD. I find it a pain that if I want to filter by a number of subordinate keywords within one main keyword they are all spread about alphabetically and not grouped together as would be the case within the HUD.

Keywords are flat structure, I believe.
The HUD gives you visual hierarchy but its only for organizing the list of keywords. The associated keywords in the image files are list of keywords as you've indicated.
There are other search fields you can use (with smart albums) to collect images into a single grouping of your choice.

  • Does Bridge only Filter/Search Keywords in one folder at a time?

It seems the "Filter" feature in CS6 Bridge will only search keywords in a single opened folder. What if I have multiple folders for image downloads, one per day, in a parent folder for the month, or even a year? Can I use Bridge to filter images in a folder containing other folders?
If not, is there another search strategy I can use to quickly filter images in multiple folders? Thanks.

You can select a root folder, and then select Show Items from Subfolders from the View menu. That adds all contained files to the Content panel, from which you can filter.
If you need more control, you can use Find instead, where you can also do AND/OR operations too, but takes a little more patience.

  • Can't filter on keywords when having ca +300 keywords

I'm trying to filter my photos (ca 30.000) on keywords (having ca +300) but run into problems because all my keywords won't show up on the screen when doing Search->Keywords. Screen shows ca 200 of them and I can't scroll the list, so I'm unable to filter on the keywords not showing up in the list.
Any ideas? Except deleting a lot of keywords, that is

KeyWord Manager is end of life and is no longer working nor developed.
I can't believe this glaringly obvious fault still exists in iPhoto. It makes keywords and thus iPhoto now unusable for me to manage a large library.
I have also added a feedback bug to Apples support site - not that I expect to ever hear anything back...

  • Filter on keyword across multiple "folders"

It is clear that I can filter for specified keyword within a "folder."
This does not provide much convenience, it seems to me. I want to locate images with a given keyword across a large number of "folders" including even my entire C: drive. I must be missing something, because there is little advantage if filtering for a specified keyword is limited to what you might see in the thumbnails on the Bridge screen.
I nearly always store my images by date, with the "folder" name being the date taken. I plan to use Bridge to assign multiple keywords to all my images stored on my computer, a tedious chore, but one that I can do a bit at one time; say one day's shooting per day until I eventually catch up with several years of shooting.
There must be some functionality that I am ignorant of which allows the user to filter on all, repeat all, images tagged, for example, "Sarah." I have tried searching the FAQs and have failed to find the answer. I have tried highlighting a couple of "folders" but the "filter" functionality is not available as far as I can tell. Please tell me what I must do to exploit the Filter functionality across multiple "folders."

I much appreciate the very useful information from Sergei Urlof, and I am using it. But I could use even more information, to speed up what I am trying to do. I want to know some efficient work flow procedures for using the keyword functionality.
I want to tag every appropriate image file that I have in storage with the name of the persons pictured. I see that when I open a folder in Bridge, and follow the File/File Info route, I can assign a keyword to the file, or more keywords if I use a comma. I see that the keywords I assign are shown on the bottom right side of screen. I see that if I open a different folder, the keywords are carried over, and I can locate/highlight other files with a particular person pictured, and can assign a keyword by clicking in the box by the keyword. This saves me the steps involved in File/File Info and typing in a keyword that is already in the list shown bottom right.
HOWEVER, as soon as I close that particular Bridge session, I lose that list, or at least so it seems to me. How do I recover the list of all keywords that I have assigned previously and make them available for clicking, for use with a folder newly opened? I can imagine using variations of names for a given person as keywords, and that would lead to poor filtering. That is, I do not see a keyword-name for an image of a certain person, so I type in a name in the File/File Info Keyword box. But it is a slight variant of one I have used before; e.g., Victoria instead of Vicki. I would not use a variant if the list of previously assigned keywords were displayed.
So, how do I bring up the previously assigned keywords, for use in a new Bridge session?

  • Filter by keyword problem: can I type the keyword anywhere?

I hope that I have explained myself sufficiently clearly.
I have assigned a few keywords to a few clips. Is there an easier way to search for a keyword than what I am doing?
    Click the small loupe button,
    That opens the filter window,
The first line is Text, which I uncheck (but Text cannot be removed) from the window,
    Add a second line (keyword),
At that point, the existing keywords appear below, ready to check or uncheck,
That does the search as desired.
My question: is there a faster way, by just typing the known keyword into a field?
Am I correct that the only way to do a keyword search is to check the existing words, and not type them anywhere?
I can do this for Text, (for the clip name) without even opening the Filter Window--just typing the clip name into the field.
    Thanks,
    Sonny

I don't know of a way to search keywords by typing but if you click the disclosure triangle next to the Event name, that shows your keyword collections for that event. Click one of them and all the clips assigned with that keyword are displayed.
In the search box, you do not need to uncheck the Text search. Instead, click the small button with the down arrow and choose Keywords.
When all the keywords appear, they are checked but you can choose to uncheck them all, then select the ones you want. Not as quick as simply typing a word into a box, but an imporvement on what you described (I hope).

If I am in Library module, select filter Metadata, select Keywords from dropdown (no other filter panels selected), and start to scroll down the list of keywords, I can select keywords by mouseclick, and see the matching photos as thumbs in the main window.
However as I scroll further down, I can no longer select keywords - the mouseclick no longer highlights or selects. This happens rather incosnsistently - by which I mean, the point in the eyword list where the select stops working is not always the same place in the keyword list.
If I click several times on the same non-selecting keyword, LR4.4 jumps to taking 50% (exactly) of processor time (shown in task manager) , and the memory usage climbs steadily until all free RAM is consumed.
This is a small (~8000 image) catalogue, with ~2500 keywords, entirely non-hierarchical.
The catalogue is set to optimise on backup, weekly.
I've tried deleting and recreating the preferences file btw to no avail

LR on Windows starts choking when you have more than about 1500 keywords.  It's a longstanding bug from at least LR 3 that still isn't fixed in LR 5 (hard to believe, but true).

You might want to check the Manage User Properties area of the User Profile Service in Central Admin.
Any properties you query on should be marked "Indexed" or "Use in Scopes".  You can also check that you are using the correct internal name for these properties.

  • Searching iPhoto clips  using iPhoto keywords within iMovie ('09)??

Just returned to Apple after a 30 years (yes, 30 years) absence with a lovely refurb iMac.
Main problem now is moving over and categorizing my library of photos and video clips taken with my Canon g9 . iPhoto has got the photo end covered nicely, now that I figured out how to use Bibble to process the raw images.
But videos is another matter. I really do like the way iPhoto uploads and categorizes my videos out of the box, and adding in the same keywords as my pictures makes it a winner for me. BUT, I noticed when looking at the iPhoto clips from within iMovie, the keywords assigned to the clips from within iPhoto are not accessible from within iMovie. Yes, iMovie has its own keywords, but geez must I really go through ALL those clips and re-keyword (new verb ?) them all after already doing it within iPhoto at import ?? AIUI, the keywords are saved in XML files in iPhoto. Isn't there a plugin or something available for iMovie that would allow it to search iPhoto clips using the iPhoto assigned keywords ? it seemed a no-brainer to me, given that these programs are designed to work together at some level, but apparently not. Or am I missing something ?
iMovie has not impressed me as a stand-alone cataloguing program, so I've looked into iDive, Footrack, etc, but those are not accessible from Front Row, whereas there is a little tool that makes clips in iPhoto visible from FR (called Purre).
A compromise might be necessary, but first I want to be sure that what I am suggsting cannot be done.
your collective wisdom will be much appreciated
    -bun

It might be worth it to you to keyword in iMovie. It is very different from iPhoto. For example, if you have a 30 minute movie in an Event, and you have 2 minutes of your child as part of the movie, you can keyword those two minutes and go instantly to those frames. In iPhoto, you could put a keyword that your child is in the video, but you would only know that it is somewhere in the 30 minutes and you would have to search for it.
See [this video tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#mark] for how to do simple marking of your video.

  • Filter by entire keyword, not part of keywords

    Hi,
I am wondering if there is a way to filter by entire keywords, rather than just part of them. For example, say I have two keywords "young adult" and "adult". Is there a way to find all of the images with the keyword "adult" without getting all of the photos with "young adult" as well?
    Thank you,
    Nick

This is an annoying flaw in LR -- it's not easy to filter by exact keyword.  Some options:
    - In Smart Collections, you can use the two rules "Keywords contains adult" and "Keywords doesn't contain young".
    - In the Keyword List pane in the right-hand column, you can hover the mouse over the keyword "adult" and click the right-arrow that appears on the very right.
    - In the Library Filter bar, you can add the Keyword column and then select the "adult" keyword.
    - If you find these too clumsy, you can use the Filter By Keyword command of the Any Tag plugin to quickly filter by one or more exact keywords.

Using Windows 7 and LR 5,  when I look at the Keyword List a certain keyword has 7 pictures but when I check the Library Filter with that keyword 350 pictures are shown which includes the 7 pictures that have the keyword.  Why does the Library Filter showing pictures that do not match the query

    Dan,
Here's what's going on in the catalog you sent me, "Joel & Caitlin's Wedding".  There is the keyword "gwenn", which is explicitly assigned to 7 pics. But keyword "schwartz" has a number of synonyms, including "gwenn", and it is assigned to 25 pics.  There is no overlap between the two sets of pics.
I discovered these two occurrences by doing Metadata > Export Keywords, opening the exported file in an editor, and then searching for "gwenn".  I found two occurrences of "gwenn":
    gwenn
    schwartz
        {gwenn}
From this, you can see that the keyword "schwartz" has 9 synonyms, of which "gwenn" is one.
The filter criterion "Keywords Contain gwenn" will match the 7 pics that are explicitly assigned the keyword "gwenn", and it will also match the 25 pics assigned the keyword "schwartz", because that keyword has a synonym "gwenn".
This illustrates the behavior I mentioned above: The criterion "Keywords contains x" will match against any of a pic's assigned keywords, any of those keywords' ancestor keywords, and any of the synonyms of the assigned keywords and their ancestors.
So LR is operating correctly here, if not in a way that's easy to understand.
It appears that you are using the synonyms of "schwartz" to represent individual members of the Schwartz family.  A better way of representing family relationships is to have a parent keyword "Schwartz", with subkeywords for each family member, e.g. "Gwenn Schwartz", "Joe Schwartz", "Jane Schwartz", etc.  Repeating the family name in the subkeywords has a couple of advantages. LR usually only displays the "leaf" name of a keyword, so instead of showing you just "Joe", it will show you "Joe Schwartz", helpful when there are a number of different people whose first name is "Joe".  Also, if you ever export your pics to other software, it may not understand the LR hierarchy and won't show the parent keywords, so again it's more informative to see a keyword named "Joe Schwartz" rather than "Joe".

  • IMovie is not processing some of my videos

Hi! First time on the discussion boards. Usually I am able to figure something out myself, and if not, a quick search online gives me the answer...but not this problem.
I have my wedding footage that I am trying to edit and compile to make a video. Original footage was captured in some format that is not compatible with quicktime; I believe its UNIX (or something). I converted all clips to mp4 and have been transferring them to iMovie so I can begin editting. Here is the issue.
There are a couple of clips that, even though they are in the proper format, will not open iMovie. All other clips that I converted opened up fine in iMovie. I selected an event, imported movie, found clip, and it optimized, processed, and generated the clips into frames. There are a couple that will not open in iMovie. It begins the process, and then nothing happens. Whats confusing is that it is in the proper mp4 format because when I open the clip in the folder that it is saved in, it plays just fine in quicktime. Also, all other clips that did transfer properly, I did the same thing to them for the entire process (converting to transferring).
I then tried opening the video in iPhoto (I was told that sometimes corrects any error with the video). It is in iPhoto, plays in iPhoto, but won't transfer to iMovie.
I restarted everything multiple times. I even took the original footage and converted it into mp4 again (thinking something happend during the original conversion).
I don't know what else to do. Hope you were able to bear with my ramblings and I hope someone knows what to do!!
Thanks so much! Look forward to any and all assistance!

    a few general advices:
    • some apps do have the habit, to open in any 'save'-dialogue the last opened location - which can be the apps-folder! so, just have a look in the save-window-top-bar, where you are actually. In Finder, you can 'repair' such stray-cats, givin' them a new home. file-location.
    • some people do have the habit, to save 'everything' on Desktop - in any save-dialog, pressing cmd-D jumps straight to that location - which can lead to some hodgepodge on your screen. ok, for fast working, as a 'interim location' fine, but 'keep your room tidy!" - ahh, we had that
    • your Mac came with a pre-structured harddrive: you notice Music, Movies, Documents ... for me, this is a good start.
    • now, trusssst me, evangelizing starts NOW:
I'm noticing on the Windows frontline, a habitually ritual to organize 'manually'. Example: thousands of folders (and folders within folders) to 'structure' a music library of 10.000th of songs.
DIFFERENT on MacOS, different for this example in iTunes, the magic is: TAGS
by concept, there's no need to bore the user with file-locations!
MacOS and its applications make widely use of tags, keywords.- And it has built-in powerful search- and filter features. Look upper right, the tiny loupe: Spotlight indexes EVERY file ever on your Mac! You have written thousands of letters - where's the one mentioning the 'intoxicated neighbours'? Type these two words into Spotlight - presto! your document is there. No need to know where or when or in which app you saved it.
In iMovie, you can use keywords
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6ce9a
in its bigger brother, FCPX, you have a whole data-base-app at hands! (a popular request there is 'sub folders' - let the app do it, automatically!)
I like to explain it with two examples:
    • in your music library, you're looking for 'oompah oompah yeah' - in a manual organized library, YOU have to know, is it in folder 'Kraut Hits 99' or in 'Kraut Hits 98' - if your files are well tagged (and in iTunes, you can automate this process!), just type 'oompah' - done.
    • in your photo library, you're looking for that very nice pic, Grandma smiling - in a manual organized library, YOU have to know, is it in folder 'XMas2010', or 'funeral_2011' … ?  if your files are well tagged (and in iPhoto, you can tag persons automatically), just type 'Grandma' - done.
    lots of text - sorry!
    in short:
use keywords. tag your files. let the dumb but fast computer do the work it can do best - search&organize. keep your head free for creativity.
although, I recommend to avoid clutter, but I also recommend to avoid 'over organization' - tags are best!
    enjoy movie making!
and sorry for my, sometimes corny humor ....

  • Smart Album Keyword Bug

I have a library of 17,440 “Referenced” photos, grouped across multiple projects, none of which contain more than about 400 photos. Prior to importing these images into Aperture, I had already keyworded all of them; the keywords are embedded within the image files.
707 of these images have the keyword “Cruise_Ship” (photos of or on a cruise ship). I then created a smart album with a SINGLE filter, “Keyword = Cruise_Ship”. I have no other filters selected, I have no other keywords selected in the keyword filter, and at the top of the keyword filter, I have selected “Include ALL of the following”.
However, instead of the 707 expected images, this smart album actually displays 5336 images. I have verified, via the metadata browser that in fact most of these images DO NOT contain the keyword “Cruise_Ship”.
So, I tried the following (in order). After each step, I once again checked the contents of the smart album, and in each case it displayed 5336 images instead of the correct 770:
    Repair Database
    Repair Permissions
    Rebuild Database
    Reboot Computer
    Rebuild Database
As one last attempt, in the Keyword HUD, I renamed the keyword “Cruise_Ship” to “CruiseShip” (no underscore). The HUD correctly indicated that that keyword was used in 707 versions. I then in fact changed the keyword in those versions. I then created a NEW smart album, with the only filter being “Keyword = CruiseShip” (again no underscore) and once again the smart album incorrectly displayed 5336 images.
    I am using Aperture 3.0.3.
    I’m out of ideas...

I can't say I have the same bug. However, I do have one that might be worth checking on.
On my Aperture 3 here the keyword panel padlock works back to front, i.e. if it's displaying an open padlock icon, the keyword panel is actually locked, rather than unlocked as it should be, and vice versa.
This stumped me for a while, as I also kept finding unauthorised changes happening to my keywords. Now I know to operate the padlock opposite to what I expect, it does stop any unauthorised changes.
(yes, I submitted a bug report).
    Cheers.

  • Searching by keyword in Bridge CS4

I'm in the process of keywording my files, but so far I find that I can only search--or "filter"--by keyword in one file at a time, which isn't all that useful to me. Can I search my entire My Pictures file, for example, by keyword and have Bridge select images from different files in one search?

Assuming CS4 has same search as CS3 you have to start your "look in" search in a directory that is above any that you want to search.
