Imovie 09 never stops building thumbnails-

greetings,
this is the first ever launch of imovie 09 on a new macbook pro. there is a 80GB aperture library with lots of short movies taken with various cams and phones…
now when i launch imovie it tells me that it needs to create thumbnails for my aperture library… and after 18hours still is running (hot) and askes for another 380hours time… what ?!?
anyone know how to deal with such situation ?
thanks in advance…
ab.

You are welcome.
In Activity Monitor, left click on the process (iMovie). Then click "Inspect" (second from left at the top).
A window should come up. In this window, you should see %CPU and "Recent Hangs". If "Recent Hangs" is zero, it is probably working OK. If "Recent Hangs" has a positive number in it, you could be in an infinite loop that will never finish.
If you need to Force Quit, I would use /Force Quit rather than force quitting from the Activity Monitor. There may be multiple threads that need to be killed.

  • IMovie 11 wont stop generating thumbnails

I imported a couple videos. After they were complete, a window popped up saying "processing event: new event" but it took forever and I had to shut down before it was finished.
Now, every time i open iMovie, that window pops up and it says: "generating thumbnails." The time remaining is 4570 hours and climbing. It never gets anywhere and I can't click on anything. Is there any way to make it stop? Or should I reinstall iMovie 11?
    Thanks.

Doubt a reinstall would change anything. Close iMovie and delete your caches and plist is where I would start. http://uimfaq.us/b3aANe

No, you cannot downgrade your iOS device. That's not supported by Apple.

  • How can I stop the Bridge from building Thumbnails?

I can see it's reading files in from the Server to build thumbnails. But I'd like to interrupt that process because it slows things down too much. I search Preferences to no avail :(

The best you can do is to have Bridge use the embedded previews by going in to preferences and UNcheck High-quality Previews.
But the caches still have to be built, though much faster.

  • Aperture not building thumbnails

Having a problem right now with generating thumbnails in Aperture 3.5.1.  Originally had another issue with iMovie seeing very few movies in my Aperture library.  I was able to import all files from all cameras into iMovie, and can see them if I import a sampling of them into another library.  Apple support suggested I rebuild my library, which revealed a few more, but still less than 5% of the total.
Apple then suggested I create a new library and import my existing library.  I was watching the progress bar near the end when Aperture crashed at completion.  I repaired the library and it began building thumbnails.  The process has been slow, with Aperture running at 100% CPU (one core--single thread?) and very low I/O on the disk.
The status freezes on one image when Aperture processes roughly 1000 thumbnails.  It says "Generating Thumbnails for [image]" "35,323 Remaining".  At first I thought Aperture may still be processing in the background, seeing how Aperture's CPU utilization remained in the 100% range and disk usage continued.  But when I quit Aperture and restart, it shows barely more progress than what was indicated in the status before quitting Aperture.  The particular images listed are fine, and the thumbnails are generated when Aperture is launched.
At this point, Aperture will not quit cleanly, or with a Force Quit.  Occasionally I've been able to use this suggestion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3881
In other cases, Aperture seems to quit, but the entry remains in the Activity Monitor, with all accumulated stats, but 0% CPU.  I'm unable to launch Aperture at this time and must restart.  If I try to kill the process, the OS says it can't find it.  Could this be a Mavericks eccentricity?
When restarting the OS and Aperture, thumbnail generation continues from where it left off, and processes another 1000 images or so.  I did try repairing the database, and thumbnail generation continued, but eventually failed.
Occasionally, the com.apple.MediaLibraryService stops resonding in the Event Viewer.  This had not always correlated with the frozen progress bar.  In fact, thumbnails have continued to process when I've seen that hang in Event Viewer.  But it always has meant I need to take Aperture down forcefully.  Oddly, I do not have sharing previews enabled (set to never for now).
There are a few early articles, but they don't seem to offer any suggestions I have not tried, except to persist and restart Aperture each time this happens.  Could take 2-3 weeks at this rate if I need to restart every time the progress bar stops.  I have also tried clearing user and system cache a few times.
Apple second level support has been slow to respond, and I'm over 9 days into this process.  Has anyone experienced anything similar, or can offer any suggestions?

Is it only your current Aperture library, that is causing this trouble?
Or do you see the same problem, when working with a new test library?
Although otherwise operationally sound, some video in my original library was not viewable in the Media Browser (including iMovie), even after a repair and rebuild.
I created a new, empty library and imported my original library.  I described that process.  Aside from the crash near the end, it appears to have all my assets.  The project and image counts are the same.
The issues described about building thumbnails is in this new library.  Upon importing my original library, the new library began generating all new thumbnails.
If the thumbnail generation is only hanging for your current Aperture library, you may have imported corrupted media - image files, videos that cannot be processed, sound files.
I know exactly what you're talking about, and this was my first assumption as well.  As an Aperture 3 early adopter, I saw this issue countless times from failed imports.  But I have examined over 8 files that it has apparently hung on.  The thumbnails are fine!  I look at the assets, directly, and they are in perfect condition.  I expected to find corrupted TIFF files or bad thumbnails.  Neither were true.  If I request to generate it again, it works just fine.
Have you tried to remove the images from your Apeture library, that are shown in the message? Inspect them in the Finder and check the media type - jpeg, raw, video and check, if other Applications can open it.
    Yes.
I do not have previews generated for nearly 2/3 of the images in my library, although I haven't seen reports about how this could be a problem.
    UPDATE
Since my first post, I found a suggestion to regenerate all new thumbnails.  Days of time lost, but I restarted.  Still had a crash after about 1000 thumbnails.  com.apple.qtserver or something was hung.  Seemed only to launch occasionally after I restarted.  Thought this might be responsible for generating thumbnails for video.  So I did a search for all video files and let Aperture build these as I browsed through, page by page.
Since that time, Aperture has been building thumbnails for 10 hours, the longest run yet.  Thumbnails are still generating VERY slowly, but I haven't seen a crash since.
Could it be the back and forth between images and video as it's generating thumbnails?

  • Building Thumbnails is taking soooo long

When I first went to open iMovie '08, I'd just finished filming a pair of high school basketball games, and had loaded them into iPhoto. It said it needed to build the thumbnails, and gave me a choice of doing it "now" or "later". I chose to do it now, and proceeded to wait for the next 90 minutes as it ostensibly built the thumbnails. I fiddled around for a bit, then closed iMovie, intending to get back to it later. The next time I opened iMovie, it had to build the thumbnails again! Now these two games fit onto one 4GB SD card. We're not talking about several hundred gigs of video here. Am I honestly going to have to wait for upwards of 90 minutes EVERY TIME I go to use iMovie? Is there a way to save the thumbnails? Help!

Dan, I feel your pain. Plug in an external hard drive and the program launches into generating thumbnails. Import a second clip from a camera and it generates thumbnails from that clip AND clips already imported! This insane waste of time has ruined this program! I am back to a much older copy of imovie. That is the only way I have figured out how to get a simple movie made quickly! Wasn't that the point, Apple?

  • Aperture 2.1.4 Hangs On Building Thumbnails

I have Aperture 2.1.4 and everytime I open a specific project (the one with the most images...800+) it hangs building thumbnails. I've tried the "check library consistency" but during Running VACUUM On Database it never gets past the 80% area on the progress bar. I let it go for at least 4 hours but that's as far as it goes. Any thoughts?

    I would work my way through the steps listed on the Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics page;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2945
Not necessarily in that order though,
    Delete Preferences,
Disk Utility, repair Permissions & Repair Disk
    Consistency Check
    Re-build LIbrary
Depending on the size of your library you need to expect that it may well take a lot longer than you have allowed, typically leave it to work until complete, it may well sit at 80% for hours.

  • Very Loud and Never Stopping Fan

    Hi,
I purchased my HP laptop in September 2010 and for the past few months the fan runs constantly and is very loud. Even after shutting down my laptop for hours, upon start up the loud fan begins. It has gotten so loud and distracting that it is now hard to focus and use the laptop.
Any feedback would be appreciated. I remember when buying the laptop something about a year warranty on hardware. Does this exist? This issue needs to be resolved.

Well, the never stopping fan can be due to a number of factors, most usually:
    1)      You have a dust build-up in your heat sink (which may not be apparent by just looking through the vents). Unfortunately your computer’s cooling system also acts as a vacuum cleaner to all those table tops it has been on. It is a common nuisance after over a full year of work. Cleaning it up may require disassembling the whole computer, since the heat sink is inaccessible on many computers. (Word of caution: if you are thinking of using “Canned Air” to blow the dust out, be very wary that you may destroy your fan bearings if the canned air makes the fan blades rotate too fast!)
    2)      CPU may be under constant load (maybe some new buggy software update was installed?) – Check CPU Load on “Task Manager”.
    3)      The GPU (graphics card) may be running always at full speed, thus increasing the heat inside the unit (change GPU profiles to “Battery Optimized” or such).
Finally, do use a program such as “CPUID Hardware Monitor” to read out the temperature sensors inside your computer. You can better understand at which temperature the fan kicks in and why the temperature is rising to that target.

    Please advice

I have this _same_ issue, exactly.  Initial backup goes just fine, but incremental backups fail.  And like you, I replaced the internal drive.
The failures didn't start occuring long after the original drive was replaced--which was about 1 year ago.  The new drive was non-Apple and worked fine--and tests fine now as well when outside the TC.  But suddenly incremental backups started failing when the TC firmware and utility app were updated about 2-3 months ago.  I even swapped the internal non-Apple drive for another known-working non-Apple drive, and same results.
I strongly suspect Apple added something to the firmware to check if it's an Apple or non-Apple drive in the TC and, if the latter, maybe causes incremental backups to fail.  This is only speculation and, obviously, the initial backup still works, so any checksum like this would have to be only during the incremental backup process.
I'll be checking into this thred to see if others have the same issue, or if a solution is found.  Hopefully my hypothesis is just para-apple-noia and it's some small, easy-to-fix issue.

  • ITunes 7.6.1...the torture never stops

I have to say upfront that iTunes 7.6.1 is the worst version. Ever.
I couldn't use 7.6 because I got spinning beachballs ALL the time. Had to revert backwards. When 7.6.1 came out I gave it a go and things have ben great.
    Until now.
I decided to rent my first movie via iTunes last night. It's not been played yet, but it seems ever since I DL'ed that rental, iTunes is essentially useless. I can play a song and within 10 seconds the beachball comes up and never stops. I can't play another song. I end up force quitting. I won't even try to play the movie rental for fear it'll freeze up during playback and then I'll be screwed.
So, it looks like I'll have to go back to a previous version. Again. Make that twice now. I hate 7.6.1 and 7.6. Now I'll have to search the forums to recall how to go back to a stable version rather than watch the movie I downloaded to watch at this time. Then I won't be able to watch the rental on a previous version and I'm screwed out of a rental.
I won't go back to another version (after I revert today) until 7.7 comes out. I am also irked that Apple apparently is in no hurry to address the many issues this version has. 7.6 acts like a Beta version and I've no idea (other than $$ from rentals) why they released such an unstable version. It's so Un-Apple like and more like the Borg from Redmond rather than the Cats from Cupertino.

Have you tried it with a different users?
    Repaired permissions?
    Ran Disk First Aid?

  • Verity vspider.exe process never stops and sucks system resources

I'm running a scheduled task to index a site on a Win2k3 server running CF8. I'm having a problem where the vspider.exe process never stops and sucks up system resources, slowing my whole server down. It actually is doing quite a bit of work... I'm directing the output into a log file, and I'm getting 300 K of information and it seems to be walking the site just fine. But it ends up not finishing the job and running forever. I have to open the task manager to terminate the process and then the server runs better.
    Any ideas?

I have not found an answer to this problem, though it hasn't been a problem lately. I now send the output of the vspider.exe process to a log file and can check the status of the index job. I index nightly, so if the process is running at anytime, I can look at the results of the index job in my log file. This might give some clues. I have a feeling I had a corrupt index and vspider was choking. Try rebuilding your index from scratch.
