IMovie '09 on an eMac!

Almost two weeks ago I got my 1.42 GHz eMac to replace my dead 1.0 GHz model, and one of the things I did with this new one was take advantage of the graphics card being able to support Core Image by following this iMovie '09 hack:
http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2009/09...erbook-g4.html
So far, iMovie '09 is fully functional on my 1.42 Ghz G4 eMac. It does occasionally slow down a bit, but otherwise it works just like it's supposed to, almost as if I were running it on an Intel-based Mac!
I decided to give this a try, having used iMovie '09 at my college's TV studio on the new 24" iMacs we got last summer. I haven't used iMovie '08 that much (I've toyed around with it a bit at an Apple Store), but in some ways iMovie '09 is better than iMovie HD 6 in terms of editing and features (like the ability to select only parts of clips from the event browser to edit in the project, the YouTube uploader, the real-time transitions and effects, better color correction, picture-in-picture and greenscreen already included, etc.), and in a few ways it isn't (like the lack of some fancy video effects, the funky audio editing, not as good title control).
Any comments?

YES!  Thanks for reminding me.  It's been a long time since I tried this and I'd forgotten I had to use Firewire.  Thank you very much!

  • Upgrade my eMac or get a new system?

My eMac has been running slowly for some time now. Safari and Firefox crash constantly. The computer gets logged when I run several programs at once. I don't run many high memory applications (such as gaming or video editing). I mainly use my computer for internet, email, chatting and working my iTunes.
I am running OS 10.4.9 and have 512mb of memory. My computer is 4 years old. I am a little frustrated that this system only has USB 1.0 making synching my new iPod Nano slow. I am thinking about upgrading the memory and reinstalling the operating system versus purchasing a new iMac.
What are people's thoughts about upgrading my computer versus getting a new one. I'd have to save up money for a while to get a new system.
    Thanks for the input!

Judging from your description of your use, I would stick with your eMac.
I upgraded my eMac and still find it a very usable computer.
The specs for my eMac show the max RAM as 1Gig but that is only because the biggest PC2700 memory stick was 512 at the time of release. It sees and utilizes 2Gig just fine (1Gig x2). I am guessing by your description that you have a 1Ghz eMac, so I can't say for sure that 2Gig will work for you as well because my eMac is a 1.25, but I am willing to bet it would.
I also upgraded the Hard Drive to a 250Gig drive. I then purchased a Firewire enclosure and used the old internal drive as an external firewire drive. This eliminated the need to backup anything before doing a clean install of the OS on the new drive. If I need files from the "old computer", I just pull them off the external drive.
That said, I would not recommend performing the Hard Drive upgrade yourself unless you are experienced in this type of thing. Once you open the case of the eMac you are exposing yourself to potentially deadly high voltages.
If the HDD upgrade is not for you, simply purchase an inexpensive external firewire drive and copy the entire drive to the external, then do a format and install on the internal drive.
I personally don't think the inconvenience of a somewhat slow sync of your iPod justifies the $1,200 for a new iMac. Some simple changes in "process" can probably minimize this pain, like starting your sync before you go to bed or start dinner, etc. I continued to used my eMac until very recently for Photoshop and video editing using iMovie HD. Your eMac is more than capable of performing the tasks you described. Had your description of use been different, my recommendation would probably be different as well.
I apologize for the lengthy reply, but I hope it is of some help.

  • Adding iMovie 4 on my 10.5 MBP ?

I just bought a MBP 10.5 which came naturally with iLife 08 ie iMovie Version 7.
    I downloaded iMovie v 6.
On an external HD, I have projects edited in both iMovie 4 and 6.
What would happen if I add iMovie 4 to my MBP ? (I have iMovie 4 from my eMac 10.3)
    a - would it get confused ?
b - would it recognise automatically which iMovie version to work with upon opening an iMovie project whether it's iMovie 4 or 6 ?
Anybody out there with all iMovie v4, v6 and v7 (08) on their Mac ?
    Tks for feedback.
    jc

    Hi jean-claude,
I have 4 installed on a MBP and it works-.. fine?. iMovie 6 retail version has a completely different media browser than 4 and 4 runs only under Rosetta.iMovie 7 and the downloaded version of 6 are void of the media browser as it used to be and will most likely work fine.

  • "Not enough disk space" when there seems to be (+ rapid memory consumption)

[Note: I originally posted this in the iDVD section, but due to an answer I got there to another question and further conversations with my daughter, figured out this is probably an iMovie question?]
I'm a newbie to iDVD and iMovie and Forums (my last Mac was a Performa 6360--still using it for the family budget). I got my daughter a MacBook as a graduation gift. She is using it to combine movie inputs from a wedding/reception that come from digital camreas and a couple of video cameras. We went to Flip4Mac to get the necessary software/features to import .wmv files (only way we could download one of the video cameras was by going from PC to Mac--can't remember if it was a Sony or Canon).
Issue: When she tries to import vidoes into iMovie HD 6.0.3 which have already been transferred to her computer, she gets: "The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space to import Macintosh HD/Users/julie/pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Roll8/CIMG1442.AVI" [She says this is about a 4 min. clip.]
Basically the question is how to get more room on her disk to import and to save? She seems to only be able to Save--she can't Save Project as an option because it says she doesn't have enough disk space (she's already deleted the Trash). Help says you need to have more than 400mb of free space or it gets difficult but the indicator shows 28.8GB free space left...so there seems to be some kind of disconnect?? (Or maybe we're talking apples and oranges?)
[Even more disturbing, just in the last couple of days with only a little time spent on the computer, the 28.8 GB has dropped to 2.3GB--obviously there is something she is doing that she is not aware of or shouldn't be doing that is consuming memory at a rapid pace.] On top of that, she also gets the same error message when she tries to burn the project onto a disk using iDVD???
I went through the first 5 pages of the forum and couldn't see a similar problem, but then I may have not known what to look for?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...she's trying to give the DVD as a Wedding gift--somewhat belated.

    Hello Karstn Schluter,
This is fm's daughter who is havin ghte difficulites. at the end you tell me to try to answer 1-8 so i will try.
1- how can you tell if the avi is containing divx? or not?? do I need to just keep this in mind when importing these files
2- I have not brought in an external drive. I did try making my laptop computer a harddrive so I could import my imovie poject to my eMAC at one point, but it was not allowing me to do that either. Because I had to have it in DVD form or something
3- No I did not segment the internal drive....sorry How do you do that??? Right now I am trying to find out what is taking up all the memory and Hard Disk Drive space....i do not know how to do that either....Do you know how???
4-Yes I know flip4mac is for wmv....I guess what that question was emplying was that I also have wmv files that I am trying to import to imovieHD and that is not working either...I can get my avi to get into imovieHD, but not my wmv. files
5-THank you for the tip with the trash then another question to this one how do you delet projects that are taking up memory that are no longer in use?
6-Thank you for the tip...so then ignore the not enough disk space.....how can you alter the disk space so that you can save the project under save project as and not just save project?
7- Sorry my dad was miss informed I cannot import the wmv. files to imovie and I cannot import imovie to iDVD I only have transferred one and then all of the other files are not seen as movies so I can not import them?? Does that make since
8- When we were useing the Sony Camera originally we could not import the video to the MAC because it did not have the correct firewire cable and it would not been read onto the MAC computer. So, we have to buy the flip4mac equipment so that I would be able ot download the inoformation to the computer by a wmv.file dvd so we are having difficulites trying to import that file.
I hope these answers clear up the question a little bit more and sorry that your answers brought out more questions. Thank you very much for helping me. I was using a different program in my college class so changing to imovie and idvd has been a huge struggle for me. Thank you once again.

  • How do i show time/date stamp at start of each clip

This may be a camera issue, not imovie, not sure. My (sony dcr-hc21) camera records but doesn't show time/date at start of each clip (my old non-digital camcorder used to show them for a few seconds). is there a way to get imovie to show these time stamps? I'm using imovie 3.0.3.
    emac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi r
There are no stright forward - cost free way to get this to my knowledg.
    - I think You can buy a plug-in for this. (Not sure)
    - A quality redusing way is to copy from camera via analog cable to a
VHS-VCR then reimport to a fresh miniDV tape and using this. If You
just want some sec. with date and time You can cut between old and
new material but the quality change will be more noticable this way.
    - Some people has two miniDV cameras and do an analog connection
    via them. Smart.

  • Foreign audio after burning in iDVD

I am running iMovie with Tiger on eMacs. I have 13 computers in a classroom. Sometimes when I burn in iDVD, the burn is successful, but there is only identical foreign audio over the whole disk. I have four uses set up on each eMac. the foreign audio if from totally different user than the one I am logged into. This plays on both the theme upon loading the disk, and on every movie. Movies play fine in iMovie and when testing in preview in iDVD. Usually I trash preferences and this clears it up. Now, two of my computers are not fixed with this method. I got one to work after trashing and repairing preferences, rebooting, then rebuilding the iDVD project with a totally new project. Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Titles *Always* Over Black

Well, it's been a while since I've had to use iMovie, and while I've had great experiences with it in the past, right now, it's got me frustrated.
No matter what title I use, what settings I try to apply, my titles always appear in my project as 'Over Black'.
That is to say, when I attempt to place a title overlaying the video, it completely blacks out any video and audio for the duration of the title (it doesn't even shift the video, it just eliminates it).
On the suggestion from a similar thread, I removed all Quicktime plug-ins and re-attempted. No beans. I tried trashing my .plist files and gave it another go. No beans. I've tried applying over black and updating with it unchecked - no beans. I've gone as far as applying it, updating it to 'over black' and updating it back again - nothing.
    Nada.
Any suggestions out there? Any way to downgrade from 6.0.3 to 6.0.2? I didn't have this issue before...
    Thanks!
p.s. - this is with all title types and all fonts that I have tried...
    eMac 1.0, 768, 160 gig, AE   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iMovie 6.0.3
    eMac 1.0

As mentioned in my first post, of course I tried unchecking the 'over black' box.
    Further updates for the night:
The movie I'm trying to work on is actually a slideshow movie exported from iPhoto - with audio.
When I export the slideshow without audio, it works just fine, and I can add the titles properly (i.e., not always over black). That would be all good and fine, but to fit the pictures to the music, I need them to fade every 4.75 seconds (or so), and iPhoto will only let me round to whole numbers.
I've been trying different audio formats for the song to see if there's some issue there... but haven't come up with anything yet.

nb/ what about dvd files or avi for import in imov9 ?

    What is a compression format?
A compress format literally refers to the codec used to compress/make the file content. DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 are all video formats in which iMovie '08/'09 can edit "natively" (i.e., without having to change the video to a different compression format.) iMovie '08/'09 can any or all of these compression formats in a single project. Older iMovie applications normally edit in a single compression format. In HD, for instance, you could designate whether you wanted a DV project or an MPEG-4 project and any file not in the selected format would be converted to your "default" compression format for editing as part of the importing process. iMovie '08/'09 does not perform and conversions as it imports files at the "Finder" level. Camcorders, however, come in many different compression formats and, except for DV, none of them are currently compatible with iMovie editing as they come off the camcorder. Therefore, iMovie '08/'09 uses special importing routines that evaluate the incoming compression format and selects the proper way to deal with each. HDV and AVCHD, for instance, are converted to AIC video while multiplexed M2V/AC3 files are converted to an "all I-Frame" MPEG-2 format and the AC3 is converted to linear PCM which iMovie '08/'09 can edit. So the basic rule of thumb for file importation is, if iMovie can't edit it, it won't be imported. As for camcorders, if iMovie '08/'09 doesn't recognize it, it can't transcode and import it and it then falls to you, the user, to either make iMovie recognize the content or do the conversions yourself manually.

  • How to play .VOB files with QuickTime?

I get an "Error opening file" message trying to play a VTS014.VOB file. This is a file of home movies scanned to the above file. I use Pro (QuickTime™ Version 7.1.6, Player Version 7.1.6) with the mpeg-2 addition and went through the process identifying QuickTime as the default player in "Get Info".
I can watch with iDVD and something else called VLC Media Player. I want to be able to pull off segments for other applications like making an DVD with just parts of the full file.
    Thanks for your help.

The mpeg2playbackcomponent will not play mpeg2 files that are in transport stream format, as the VTS in the file name you cite suggests. There is, however, a freeware that can use the playback component and read transport streams. It also will do some simple editing of vob files and save them without re-encoding, or export them to non-mpeg form such as DVStream for use in apps like iMovie.

  • Help!  My movie is making funny noises!

I have encountered a problem with imovie 4.0. (on eMac) I have created an almost 20 minute softball video and burned it to DVD. Some of the "natural sound" is there and all of the music is there throuout the entire video. I tried to extract audio from the clips that didn't have audio in the video so the audio would be in a different clip pane. After exporting the audio and locking everything down, all of a sudden a sound swept through my entire video. It almost sounds like the audio is in slow motion or very distant static. I tried everythign in my power to settle down the audio but I don't know what else to do. I've spent over 30 hours working on this video and it would be painful to see it all go to crap. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, it has been over a month, I haven't been able to get back into school with summer vacation and all! I got the video to work on the DVD with all the correct sounds I wanted. I originally hadn't converted it to quicktime and just burned the iMovie with iDVD. After like an hour and a half, the quicktime didn't have the gross puking noise and everything is A-OK! Thanks for your help!

  • Burning an iMovie and Connecting eMacs via Crossover Cables

Is the following solution to my scenario possible:
I have a dead Superdrive in one of my eMacs and am unable to burn (obviously). I would still like to use the eMac to create movies using iMovie but am wondering if I can connect this eMac to another eMac using a crossover cable, and use the eMac with the working Superdrive to burn the DVD?
I have a fear that this wont be possible if the video files need to be on the computer that is doing the burning. I teach at a school and money is not freely accessible (I realize I could get an external burner and problem solved but this might not be possible and am looking for alternate solutions - maybe this is too crazy for anyone to have attempted before).
Thanks for any and all input.

If you have finished editing your movie and have it in an iDVD project, you can create a disk image of your project and use that for burning the actual DVD disks. You can connect the two eMacs via Firewire and use the 'bad' one that has your project on it in target mode. It will then appear on the other one as another drive. You can copy the disk image file of your iDVD project and then burn it on the eMac whose Superdrive is good, using Disk Utility.
Here are instructions for creating a disk image file:

Here are instructions for setting up the target mode connection:

And here are instructions for burning from Disk Utility:

  • Emac will not connect to LCD projector while running iMovie

I am working on an eMac running 10.3.9. We have the eMac connected to an LCD projector in a computer lab setting. Things work fine - until we try to run iMovie on the projector. A message appears on the screen asking for a resolution of 1024 X 768. We have changed the resolution on the computer numerous times - yet the projector gives us this message each time. When the computer is unplugged from the projector - iMovie runs fine. We have successfully used this emac and the projector for iMovie earlier - today things have not worked!!!!!
    Any help would be appreciated!

Hello Roger, if you have them installed in 10.6.7: Uninstall Virusbanner and Content Barrier (use a good Uninstaller). You don't need them at all. Instead in OS10.6.7 check if you have the Snow Leopard security update 003 installed (of which the database is almost daily updated automatically), in Lion already installed.
In Lion also do not use these apps, same story (malware db almost everyday auto updated).
It should work after that, if you do not have "exotic" system settings.

  • Leopard Upgrade, missing iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD on eMac

Need help as missing all iLife programs other than iTunes on loading. Initially did install as upgrade, it happened on that install, then decided to write zero's to entire hard drive and do clean install and it did it again.
Is there any known issue about this? I have tried the optional install from the DVD finder window, but none of the iLife items are in there except iTunes.
Just so I don't hear any EULA comments, I did buy the 5 pack software version.
    Thanks for the assistance.
    Kevin

Just made a call to Apple care and this is the advice:
-Insert the install DVD that came with your Mac
    -When the install window opens:
-Select (double click the icon): install bundled software only
If your Mac came with the iLife applications they will be re-installed on your Mac running 10.5.1
Select software update from the Apple Menu after the installation has completed.
(My advise: buy an iLife 08 family pack and you're fine)

  • Unable to Xport iMovie Footage to Videocamera

Hi all. Anyone having trouble exporting iMovie footage to Videocamera?
When I create a movie, I often send it back to iDVD tape as a backup. With the new iMovie update I am unable to export footage back to my Canon XL1 Videocamera or my Sony DCR-HC26 Videocamera.
I've tried replacing the firewire. Didn't work.
I've tried removing ALL transitions or Titles from the beginning of the movie - Didn't work.
I've been exporting to tape from iMovie for the last 3 years with no problem. This new problem began with the last iMovie update.
I am able to export to iDVD for backup...but it takes 12 hours to burn a DVD. I've tried backing up by creating a Disk image - that also is a challenge as it seems to lop off video when my movies are a full 55-60 minutes.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Naadra
Try to find these files and move them temporarilly to a new folder on Your

    Pref files:

    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
These are the names I would search for.
iMovie and iDVD will make new ones when started - You might need to select
PAL or NTSC after this and then re-start once more to make it take action.
alt. And I think easier is to go to the up left and Apple down this menu You can
select "System prefs" - don't have the proper term.
In this You select "accounts" and create a new one. Log into this and all old
pref files are created new by each program. Error free hopefully.
