IMovie 09 takes forever to refresh folders - unusable!

I have a MacPro 8-core with 32GB RAM, 3 x 1TB Seagate drives in Raid 0, with a eSata external tower with 4 x 1TB Seagate drives in Raid5. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8.
Using iMovie 09, I imported all of the digital video tapes collected over the past 6 years. My iMovie Events folder on my external eSata tower now contains about 1.2TB of imported movies. My iMovie Events folder on internal Raid, which contains only the last 2 years of movies, is about 730GB.
The problem that I'm having is that iMovie 09 takes almost 10 minutes to load while it refreshes the Event Library. Each time that I move to view a different event folder in the Event Library, I get the spinning ball and it takes 3-6 minutes before iMovie responds to keyboard import. Each time I click on a different year subfolder in the event library, the delay happens again. It's making iMovie virtually unusable. If I turn off my external eSata tower and restart iMovie, the responsiveness improves because the larger events folder is not available to iMovie.
It seems that iMovie is not designed to handle a large events folder event even on a super fast MacPro.
Any suggests to get iMovie to be more responsive? Or, have I outgrown iMovie's capabilities?
Thanks.
Bud James

OK, I have a bit more data, and some success!
Using Handbrake I converted the original mov files to mpeg-4 files using the ffmpeg codec rather than the H.264, then imported them as events in iMovie. This time they imported quickly, were responsive when edited, and shared to iDVD quickly, completing in under an hour.
So it would seem that it is the H.264 format that does not play well with iMovie. Still curious if anyone has any suggestions/explanations as to why that may be, but at least for now the problem is resolved.

  • Is there any easier way to edit imovie files that have been exported as mov file then added to FCE 4?? As every move I make has to be rendered and takes forever??? Also my recording is going out of focus without me touching the camera, why has this happen

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • IMovie takes forever to load

I opened imove for the first time in a couple months, and it now takes forever to load files.
I have the same problem when I open the external drive partition that contains my imovie files and main backup partition on the same external drive.
I never had a problem before.
The permissions for the "Movie" partition in the external drive are:
    - <my user name> "(me)" - Read and write
    - admin - Read and write
    - everyone - Read
The permissions for the "Backup" partition in the external drive are:
    - system - Read and write
    - admin - Read and write
    - everyone - Read
Both drives load - very - slowly (5 minutes).
I am the admin, and the only user.
    OS 10.8.5
    Can anyone offer ideas?
Disk utility found no permissions issues.
    Mac

iMovie should load pretty fast. The exception is the very first time it loads it has to analyze all your events and create thumbnails. And the first time it accesses iPhoto, that can take a while, too. It should remember all that, and next time, it should only have to analyze a new iPhoto clip, for example, which should go pretty fast.
So that is a clue. If there is some kind of permissions problem where iMovie cannot write to the drive where your Events are stored, it would have to go through this analysis every single time, and it would be slow.
I might try going to Disk Utility and running Repair Disk Permissions.
I also might try looking at the iMovie Events folder in the Finder/Get Info and see if the permissions look weird.

  • Why does iMovie 11 take so long when looking in a folder?

A little bit about my configuration. Recently I manually moved some large video file folders onto my Mac from my PC. Some of those folders had mixed media (don't know if this makes a difference but I'm mentioning it) ... avi, mp4, mpeg.
When I do a File/Import and the finder window opens to find the files, sometimes it takes FOREVER (= 5min or more) for the file names in the folder to come up for selection.
What is iMovie 11 doing while that beach ball is spinning? It's a new iMac with the biggest processor and video card Ram available so I hope it's not a performance issue.
    Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What type of Mac are you using? How much memory and free space on the hard drive? What mode, Events or Photos do you open first? If it's the Photos mode do you have the Event titles selected to be displayed and are they all open or closed?
Do you have sharing enabled, i.e. look for shared photos and share photos, selected in the iPhoto/Sharing preference pane? Do you have the Advanced preferences set to look up places automatically and why type of internet connection do you have?

  • ITunes takes forever to open!!

When I open iTunes in my Dock, it takes at least five minutes to open. I timed it tonight. This is a fairly recent problem, maybe for the last month or so. I'm wondering if anyone knows if this could be because I have a LOT of iPhone Applications in iTunes now?
I'm also having problems with other apps on my Mac, such as iPhoto running very slow, but only iTunes takes forever to open. iPhoto opens quickly, freezes a lot while using it, and takes several minutes to close, probably due to having over 20,000 photos in it.
So I'm thinking the iTunes problem probably isn't related to the iPhoto problems.
Also, I just did an "Archive and Install" with the Leopard OS at the advice of an Apple store Genius, but it didn't fix or change anything. In fact, the Install took six hours, which I believe is longer than normal.
Does anyone know if a large amount of App store apps in iTunes can affect how long it takes to open?
Or should I be asking this question at the iPhone forum?
    Thanks in advance, Deb

Hello back, and thank you both for responding. I had no idea there was two separate iTunes forums. I guess I'll go post to the right one.
I'm the only Mac user in a house of PC users, so my three guys are no help to me. Well, one of them has a Macbook, but he uses his desktop PC the most. Anyway...
I have 50 Gigs left on my hard drive and that's only because I had to do two "Archive and Installs" on my iMac last week. That left me with over 20 gigs in two "Previous System Folders". I'm going to delete them eventually to get that space back, but my problems were happening before when I had almost 75 gigs, and are still happening now. Nothing has changed.
My iTunes has maybe 10 gigs of stuff total, with most of it music, then maybe iPhone applications (probably 2 or 3 gigs), but only one short 45 minute video, and a couple of podcasts. Nothing else. I'm a middle aged mom, so I'm not much into iTunes except for my iPhone stuff.
So, I'm confused by iTunes reluctance to open, but will go post on the Mac iTunes forum.
Thanks for taking the time to respond to me!
    Greatly appreciated... Deb

  • Attachments take forever to open

When I receive an email in Apple Mail with a JPG attachment(s) it takes forever for them to open. The same attachment will open almost immediately on my iPad and iPhone. I have spent 3 hours so far on the phone with Technical Support without being able to resolve this problem.
This iMac is only a week old and I am uisng an Apple Time Capsule as a Router and the iPhone and iPad all get their emails from this same wifi source so I cannot understand why the iPhone and iPad will open attachments immediately but it takes the iMac ages to do the same.
    Any thoughts?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Why does my Windows Live Hotmail take forever to load?

Over the past month or so, my Firefox browser hasn't been playing very nicely with Windows Live Hotmail. For one, it takes forever to load the page, and I stare at a white screen for a good 3 minutes before it finally loads. HughesNet is my Internet Service Provider, and it shouldn't take that much time for my Hotmail to load. I could see it if it were a DialUp connection being this slow! The other thing I want to mention is that for some reason, my SilverLight plugin keeps crashing! All of my 3rd party plugins are fully up to date, including my SilverLight. It won't allow me to upload pictures to attach to e-mails! Instead, I get a sad face, telling me that my SilverLight has crashed! What is the problem that is causing this? So you know, I have the latest version 9.0.1, and it is fully up to date. Thank you. Michael Gronemeyer

    Hi,
Please try a '''Ctrl''' + '''F5''' refresh. This helps to bring in content afresh.
Please also check if the page loads okay in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode.] Additionally, you can also try to '''Enable''' Silverlight via '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons''', click '''Plugins''' on the left and check if Silverlight still crashes.

  • Prompt LOV takes forever to expand the Node on Webi report based on BW Universe

    Hi,
We have a Webi report migrated from 3.1 to our 4.1 (BI 4.1 SP2 P2) test environment.
One of the prompt "Vendor" refreshes with LOV in a node structure however when I try to expand the node it takes forever and never opens.
This prompt is predefined at universe level.
Strangely on 3.1 I do not see node structure.
    This is on 4.1
Has anyone come across such scenario.
    Please suggest.

  • Force iMovie's media browser to refresh albums in iPhotos without restart of iMovie

Is there a way, while in iMovie, to force the media browser to refresh without restarting iMovie?
Often I will add an image to the album in iPhoto and command tab back to iMovie to use it. Yet, it is not there unless I close out of the app. Is there a way to refresh the media browser?

iMovie can take a age to load once you have filled it up with a load of video hence why a refresh feature would be great.
Im regularily importing music into itunes mid edit and having to shut down and restart iMovie which is frustrating as you loose where you are and can sometimes boil a kettle whilst waiting for it.
I havent investigated a direct import into iMovie yet which might be easier.

  • Aperture takes forever to launch..

Big problem here, one I've had for a while.
On my Mac Pro, Aperture works fine, but on my Macbook Pro (2,66i7, 8GB RAM), it now takes forever to launch Aperture.
It bounces in the dock for quite a while. Then it stops bouncing, but it takes another eternity for the window to show up. Once it's open, it works as it is supposed to, but needless to say, it's not really ok for it to behave this way.
I've checked and rebuilt the database, and even deleted the library to start anew.
Any ideas as to what could be the problem.. My mac should be more than capable of handling Aperture. (This happened at 3.1 or something I think, and did not get fixed with 3.1.1)
Edit: Checking Final Cut Pro (which I never use on my portable), it seems to behave similarly.. Same with Logic. Could this be a Pro Kit-related thing, not Aperture-thing?

I was having the same issue, here's how I fixed it.
Move the following folders and files to the trash:
    /Library/Application Support/Aperture
    /Library/Cache/Aperture
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.aperture.plist
Start Aperture and wait (forever) for it to start. It should ask you the basic startup questions, but if your library is in the default location it'll find it (otherwise it should ask to create a new library or select an existing one, choose the latter).
Restart Aperture. This time it should start up in just a few seconds.
After that you can try moving com.apple.aperture.plist back into place to restore your preferences. I'd recommend reinstalling plugins rather than moving them back into place.

  • Upgraded iPod touch to 6.01 now music says "no content" on screen. Sync takes forever but won't work

Just upgraded to 6.01. Tried to sync music and it took forever and didn't reflect  the changes made in my folders, it also included lots of tracks that were blank. SO I tried syncing again, it took forever and then the iPod said "no content" when I clicked the music. Syncing takes forever (step 4 of 4) and does nothing now.
Restarted, relaunched and tried syncing many times. Not working.

    - Maybe
Fix for “No Content” on iPhone & iPod after iOS 4.2.1 update
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync (if you can)
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
