imovie 10.0.1- Ken Burns effect do not work

Is the photo you're trying to apply the Ken Burns effect to in a Project? It won't work if it's just in an Event.

  • Ken Burns Effects Don't Work in iMovie HD (I've Tried Everything)

    Version:
    OS X 10.4.10
    iMovie 6
    *Hardware 1:*
PowerMac G4 Dual 500 Mhz, 1GB RAM, Internal 40GB HDD and Internal 320 GB HDD
    *Hardware 2:*
PowerBook G4 500 Mhz, 512MB RAM, Internal 20 GB HDD
    Problem:
This problem occurs on both of my G4 Macs. In iMovie HD, I imported a JPEG from iPhoto with Ken Burns Effects on. The still photo appeared properly in the Clip Viewer initially, but appeared as a black screen in the iMovie Monitor. Once the imported photo with the Ken Burns Effects completed rendering, the clip in the Clip Viewer turned white and appeared as a white screen in the iMovie Monitor. I have tried almost everything I read about in these forums in search of a resolution.
    *Resolutions that Failed:*
    1. The photo is definitely a .jpg
    2. Tried importing the actual .jpg file as well as importing from iPhoto.
    3. QuickTime and all other Software updates have been applied and are running on the most current release.
    4. Repaired disk permissions.
    5. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my main internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
    6. Created, saved and manipulated the iMovie file in the standard Movie Folder on my secondary internal hard drive. (i.e. – I'm not saving to an external HDD)
    7. Deleted the 'mac.imovie.plist' file and created a new one.
    8. Attempted to do apply the effects logged on as a different user.
    9. Saved file, restarted machine and reopened numerous times but the problem persists.
    10. Tried a lower resolution photo and the problem persists.
    11. Attempted to import all the photos I planned to use, added transitions to all of the clips and rendered completely. Saved the file, restarted the machine and reopened the file with no change to the blank clips.
    12. The iMovie trash emptying issue did nothing to help.
    *Additional Notes:*
    1. The problem is confined to the Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. I am able to work with true video clips without incident.
    2. Ken Burns Effects operate properly in iPhoto 6 using the slideshow functionality.
    3. I would use iPhoto, but it seems like it would be easier to line up specific sections of an audio track with certain Ken Burns Effects in iMovie. (i.e. – a crescendo at the 16 second mark of the audio track coincides with the end of a 'zoom' on a photo, transition from second 16-17 second mark, new photo at the 17 second mark and pan left to right from 17 second mark to the 25 second mark.) Point is that it lines up precisely with the markers on the audio track, which seems far easier to do in iMovie than iPhoto.
    4. Please help me, I'm going nuts troubleshooting this bug! I can't find any resolution that works.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hmmm. You seem to have tried, without success, most if not all of the methods of resolving a Ken Burns black screen issue.
Some thoughts that have occurred to me:
    1. Perhaps your G4 500mhz Mac is not fast enough. I think that the minimum spec for iLife '06 is 733mhz. Might have nothing to do with this problem, but I just mention it.
    2. Are the sizes of your images too large, as can happen with some of these new high def cameras? iMovie has trouble working with very large images.
    3. Do you have any 3rd pary plug-ins, particularly in Quick Time, that could be causing a conflict?
    4. Do you have enough disk space for the project to operate?
    5. Have you done a recent Quick Time update? Some users have reported a problem with that.
    6. From your post, it appears that you have continuously worked within the same iMovie file that exhibits the Ken Burns problem. If this is true, try creating a new iMovie project and experimenting with a few clips to see if the problem persists in the new project.
Ken Burns issues can be very frustrating. I think that you will need to keep trying things until something works. Wish I could be more help, but perhaps some of the tech experts on this forum will have some workable suggestions.
There is an application called Photo to Movie that reputedly has a far better Ken Burns type of effect. If you can't resolve your problem, you might try downloading that app. I believe that it offers a demo download.
    Good luck.

  • Ken Burns effect won't work with imovie 6.0.3

I'm hopeful to find a way to use the Ken Burns effect in my 6.0.3 HD imovie. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I can't get it to work.

Did you empty iMovie's trash after creating your clips? Did you previously apply the Ken Burns effect to that particular clip and now want to change the settings?
If you already had the clip/photo imported using the Ken Burns effect, and then emptied the trash, you cannot redo the KB settings. It is a bug in iMovie. You will get the black frame when you try. The only thing you can do is reimport the photo.
Here is an explanation of the problem (Thanks to Matti Haveri) :http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#stillupdate

  • Preview of Ken Burns effect doesn't work with some pictures

I just recently installed a new graphics card (ATI Radeon 7500) on my Sawtooth, 1.2 GHz, so I could utilize the Ken Burns effect in imovie HD. It works but only partly. It works great but with some pictures the preview pane doesn't show the photo. What I see is a what looks like bad reception on an old TV (fuzzies and the picture is distorted so bad you can't even make it out). With other pictures the preview shows up fine. I'm sure I've loaded the drivers. What else can I do?

    Hi Tonyy13.
I am presenting the same problem. I can set the Ken Burns' effect while I am with the pictures before placing them in the Clip or Timeframe viewer. After placing them there, if I try to edit the picture (either by right clicking and choosing -edit picture or by control clicking and doing the same, I ended up with a black background. If you change the setting in this black ackground and update this changes they will be effective. So, you can change the slide duration, and everything in the sliders but without an image.
I was running System 10.3.9 and I thought this was the reason. Today, I went and bought Tiger but it didn't sove the problem. I do believe it is a bug in the program. According to Apple's Help and David Pogue's "The Missing Manual" this shouldn't happen.
If you solve this problem reply to this posting. If I did I will reply to your posting. Thank You.

  • Ken burns effect won't work

    hi everyone
i'm trying to export a slideshow into a quicktime movie maintaining the ken burns effect, but the quicktime movie file won't show the effect - even if in the slideshow settings the "automatic ken burns effect" is ticked on (when i watch the slideslow on the screen, before exporting it, the effect is there).
    do you have any suggestions?
another question: can you recommend a picture size? the quicktime movie will be, together with a video created qith FCE, on a dvd.
    thanks guys in advance

Did you try the other account approach that GLO suggested? That can tell you if it's a system wide issue or just one associated with your particular account.
What you should have is your Receipts folder, other that those two subfolders, are many .pkg files which represent software that has been installed on your Mac. Those packages tell the Software Update and other installers what version is already installed so it can decide if an update is required.
Have you tried using the Share->Send to iDVD menu option to get the slideshow into iDVD?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Ken Burns Affect does not work....

Ok, these are the steps that I'm taking to work with my photos. I import them and wait untill they render, and once they are finished rendering I move them down to the timeline. I then press the tab for pictures and it gives me the button for ken burns affect, but when I adjust what I want done then I press the button to render it does it but it does not apply the affect. What should I do? Reinstall? Thanks.

    atxguy,
Before you use the Ken Burns effect are you selecting the clip you wish it applied to?
    Highlighted clips will turn blue.

  • IMovie for iPhone 4 - Ken Burns Effect Issue

If I move the timeline to the start of my clip, the Ken Burns Start button is not available but the End button is. Start shows up at the end of my clips.
When at the start of the clip then start should be available and at the end of the clip then End should be available. By it being reversed, this causes me to make my effects backwards of how I intended them to be.
Is this a software bug or do I just not understand how to work this editor?

  • IMovie isn't rendering Ken Burns Effect

I am trying to apply the Burns effect to a photo in iMovie. The clip appears in the timeline but there is no red bar advancing along the bottom of the clip indicating that the effect is being rendered. Any idea what is going on here?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Is the project stored on an external drive? If so, check to be sure the drive uses the Mac OS Extended disk format. When not that format iMovie can't reliably save to the disk, so rendered clips aren't saved as they should be.

If that's not the problem, rule out third-party QuickTime add-ons and iMovie plug-ins that may be messing up QuickTime.

  • Ken Burns Effect window not there when I click on "Show Photo Settings"

    Hi
I am using IMovie HD v 6.0.3 on my mac book pro v 10.4.11. When I press "Show Photo Settings" in imovie, all I see is a large preview window with the photo panning and zooming. There is no window box with a small preview window, zoom, speed controls, and Ken Burns check box, etc. on the interface. So, as a result, the only control I have is a stop, and grab.
Where is my Ken Burns window with all the controls? Is there a download or a fix for this? What am I missing? I have a project loaded with photos and a deadline, so I figured if I used imovie instead of final cut pro, it would be much quicker and easier.
    Please help....
    Thanks,
    Anneita

Thanks for your reply! Your suggestion makes perfect sense.
However, just before I received your reply, I made an appointment with a Mac Genius at the local Apple store, and guess what! The transparent box was hiding way down the bottom of the screen, and that's why it couldn't be seen. He found it! Duhhhhh......
    Thanks again.

  • Why is ken burns effect not working on individual slides I have amended when sent to iDVD

When making a slideshow in iPhoto, I changed the zoom and scan on individual slides as instructed in the Help dialog; these showed perfectly when played.  However, when I shared the slideshow to iDVD, those particular slides were just 'still' and there was no Ken Burns effect at all.  Why did this happen?

The Slideshow was created in iPhoto and then shared to iDVD.  The Ken Burns effect works on all the photos that used the basic "Ken Burns' setting.  However, on some of the photos I tried to amend the scanning to zoom into particular faces or parts of the photo.  When I played the slideshow in iPhoto, these amended photos were exactly as I wanted, but after 'sharing' it and viewing it in iDVD, those photos I had altered were 'frozen' and the Ken Burns effect did not work at all, neither the automatic version, nor the specific way I had set it.  All the other photos still had the Ken Burns effect as expected.  I am using  iPhoto 11, 9.1.5, I haven't had this problem in the past.
If you have any ideas why this should have happened I'd be grateful.
    Thanks

  • Ken Burns Effect not working as expected.

    Hi,
I have created a slideshow in iPhoto 08 and want to have all of the slides use the ken burns effect except the first one (i want this to be a 20 second title photo). To get this to work, i have disabled the Automatic Ken Burns effect in the settings menu and then clicked the Ken Burns checkbox in all of the photos from the second one onwards. Even with these checkboxes selected, the photos just stay still and the ken burns effect does not work. Am i going about this the wrong way?
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Joe.

I believe that if you do not use the automatic ken burns effect you need to set the effect for each photo - pick one or two and with the KB slider to the left set the view for the beginning photos and then slide the slider to the right and set the end view - then it will transition between those two (I'm thinking that you can turn auto automatic and override it for just the first slide by making the start and end the same so the transition does not really do anything
Try that first (it is easier )

  • IMovie HD6 Ken Burns Effect Not working

Hi. I've been using iMovie HD6 with my old iMacG4. We used Ken Burns Effect a lot with no problems.
I just got a 1 year old G5 iMAC with Intel Dual Processor and it has the latest versions of Tiger and iMovie 06. Everything works but the Ken Burns Effect. When I use the Ken Burns effect, it shows up when I set it up but when I push the button to make iMovie render the effect, the clinic does not render. It looks like the computer is about to render the effect but nothing happens and I need to force quit iMovie to do anything else. On the set-up of the Ken Burns effect, the preview shows the Ken Burns effect working.
I had a previous version of iLife O6 so I tried deleting the iMovie from the application and reloading the iLife 06 but this did not help. Because I don't have iLife 08, I cannot download a version of iMovie O6 to give this a try.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help, Andy

Since you just got a one year old computer, I would do the following:
    1. Close iMovie and trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new .plist file on relaunch.
    2. Before you relaunch iMovie, do a permissions repair using the Disk Utility app on your Mac.
    3. Make sure that you have sufficient free disk space for iMovie to operate efficiently -- 25GB is recommended.
    4. Update iMovie and Quicktime to current versions, and do a permissions repair afterwards.
    5. If you have any 3rd party plug-ins, or Quicktime plug-ins, move them to another folder to temporarily disable them.
With the Ken Burns effect, do not empty the trash until your project is finished. Emptying the trash will cause you to be unable to edit a photo to which the Ken Burns effect has been applied.
    Hope the above helps.

  • I need to do non-constrained crops for Ken Burns effect in photo slide show

I am making photo slide shows in imovie '09. I understand the Ken Burns effect and how to set a start and an end point. I want to use the effect on vertical or portrait mode photos. i would like to have the entire photo displayed in portrait mode and have it zoom in a bit. The problem is The start and end points seem to only be horizontal or landscape mode. I can't ever get the entire image selected. How can I do this?
    Thanks,
    Tim

You need to add the letterbox (black space) in another application. iMovie's Ken Burns effect will not do it for you. You can do it in Photoshop if you like.
However, there is a way to do it in Automator, and you can do hundreds of vertical photos very quickly. That is the way I do it.
    Here is more detail:
There is also a quick way to pad your images without using Photoshop. This method will pad hundreds of images in just a few seconds.
You do it with a tool that comes with OS/X called Automator. It should be in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Automator is basically a workflow tool. It allows you to string together commands and actions into a workflow and then execute the entire sequence at once. If you have Snow Leopard, you can even add these workflows to your contextual menus that come up when you right-click.
There are many workflows that would work to pad your images. Here is an example:
In Automator, start a photo workflow and drag the following actions into the workflow from the Action palettes on the left.
    You should have something like:
1)Ask for Photos (You must select one or more photos and hit Select - you can make this easier by putting them in an album beforehand)
    2) Copy Finder Items (give it a folder to copy to- so you can find them easily)
    3) Pad Images. (put a check mark in "scale image before padding" Pick the pixel dimensions of your project...like 640x480 or 960x540. or 1920x1080
Hit Run and a dialog box will come up asking you to select photos. When you are finished, press SELECT and the Automator script will keep running.
Then at the end you should have padded images in the folder you created in step 2.

  • That darn Ken Burns effect

I started a thread in the iPhoto forum, and got my answer. However, it opened up a new question which led me here. This was my original question: "I am losing it here trying to simply drag a photo from iPhoto into iMovie without it coming in with that #$@**Ken Burns effect. I cannot find any way to turn it off, except in a slide show. I don't have or want a slideshow. I just want to use still photos in iMovie. (Both are version 6, running OS 10.4)" As I said, I did get my answer, but someone also said this: "iPhoto just gives you the Picture. It's iMovie that supplies the ken Burns effect."
So now my question is, what can I do on the iMovie side to NOT apply the effect when dragging photos in from iPhoto?
Right now I am having to select each photo in iPhoto, in the media bin, uncheck Ken Burns, save it, then import it.
    Any help? Thanks.
    Regards

    Ben
That was brilliant! Shout it to the world. Not only did each subsequently dragged photo hold the effect of the first, but I had the ability to move the content of the photo within itself (as though the pan and zoom effect was there but fixed as I want it to be).
    Great. Thanks.
