IMovie 10.0 and re-dating movies - go missing

Hi,
I have used iMovie in the past for kids school projects, but now I have begun working with about 17 years worth of home movies.
I burned them to DVD on a sony DVD player and moved them to the mac using Handbrake to create m4v files (some are mp4 as I guess I used different settings on Handbrake when I created the files)
Anyway, I imported them to iMovie and then began re-dating the clips (using the on camera date stamp as my guide LOL).  I did the whole set only to have iMovie Loose track of the video and tell me to re-import the files.
Like a fool I began doing the who process again and after re-dating about 6 files it showed the same error.
So, am I doing something wrong?   Can I change the record date with some external application and them import?
Thank you,
Mike
(PS I found that I cannot split clips which are m4v or mp4, but the new clips from my 1DX which are .mov files I can split - any suggestions on this?)

The exact same thing just happened to me.   In the prior version if imovie I had carefully dated all my old analog camcorder tapes that I imported.  Yesterday I opened imovie 9 and noticed for the first time that all my older videos were missing.  On further inspection I found they were no longer dated right.   Dated at the import date.  I changed a bunch of clips - I watched them and used the time stamp to re-date.  The adjust date feature only let me change the end date - the start date was written in (unchangeable) as the imported date.  I changed the end date to the proper date of the clips.   After doing a bunch I noticed that the clips are now showing as missing files.   Strange they first moved to the correct year and were still visible then one by a one a bit later changed to missing.   I know the clips are still there as I watched them to date them and didn't move them.  I think somehow imovie is getting confused as I put end dates before the start date (since it fixed the start date to be the import date).   The clips are shiowing up chronologically in the year I changed the end date to.  But all are now showing missing.
Any idea how to get my clips back and get them properly dated???  It seems like some of my clips were properly dated so it is possible the problem clips were never dated correctly but I am pretty sure they were (and they were important milestones like my wedding and honeymoon -- the first events after our first camcorder purchase!).

iMovie won't respond.  I've restarted and "forced-quit" move, but not getting a response.  Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

I am attempting to update from iMovie 9 to iMovie 10. I have many movies with iMovie 9. Yet, on iMovie 10, when I press "update projects and events", it states "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update". Somehow it doesnt' see all the movies I have on iMovie 9 library.  What do I do?

I'm dealing with this same issue. At one point, it did recognize the Update function but then said it could not import the cache.mov and plist files which apparently means that imovie 10 can't see any of these past events. I can't figure it out.

  • I have several short movies on iMovie (OSX 10.7.5) and want to move them to Microsoft PP. How?

I have several short movies on iMovie and want to move them into PP slots. How can I capture them?

You can do that too, it's all in the iDVD program.
But first you want to assemble the separate clips into one big long clip. For that you would use iMovie. Share to the Media Browser (choose the Large size). Let it export then quit iMovie.
Open iDVD, click on the Media button and then the Movies button. Under the iMovie star icon you will see your final assembled clips movie. In the iDVD project window turn on the map view (it's little boxes that look like a flowchart) then drag the iMovie project into the first box:
You can set the project to startup without a Menu, and then loop continuously as well. Go up to the Advanced Menu then click on the Loop movie option to turn it on.
Once checked the Loop movie status will appear as curved arrow icon in the Project Window:
In the lower right corner is the icon indicating this video clip will loop while being played.

  • How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts?

How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts? Additionally, what does 'File' 'Finalize Project' do?

Instead of Share to Media Browser, what happens if you try Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large size) and save it to the Desktop?
If that fails try Share Menu > Export using QuickTime...
Then pick Movie to QuickTime Movie, then click on Options... which is just to the right of Export
Under the Video section click on Settings...
Then in the pulldown menu at the top, titled Compression Type: Choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Then click OK. And click OK again, and save it to the desktop. Once the .mov file is created, you can import that into iDVD and most likely it will work in Wondershare Creator if you prefer to use that instead.

    Later edit:
CryptoLocker, a new “ransomware” virus, began making the rounds several months ago. But a particularly virulent strain of the infection popped up in mid-September, affecting individuals and business owners alike.
The malware takes hold in a variety of ways: after a user clicks on a link or attachment in a spam email; via exploit kits on hacked websites; or through Trojans that pretend to be required programs to view online videos.
That would be an .exe file then.

  • Trying to move iMovie '11 project and event to another drive

    Hello,
I'm trying to move some iMovie '11 projects and their associated events to another hard drive, as my start up drive is full.  I currently have projects and events on my startup drive and also on an secondary internal hard drive.  That drive along with several others, shows up in my Event Library list.  I have tried clicking on my project both with the Command key and without, to drag it to another hard drive that is listed in my Event Library.  The hard drive does not "light up" and I don't get the option to "move project or move project and events."  I've tried a reboot of the application and the computer.  No luck.  Is something wrong with my iMovie application?  Or is there something else I can try?
    Thanks!
    Catherine

Here is a writeup on how to do this.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
One thing to notice is that there is an error in iMovie help. It says to drag the icon for the project to the icon for the external drive in the Event library. This is wrong. You drag the project icon to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library. For the Events, you drag the icon for the Event to the icon for the external drive in the Event Library.

You can't use iMovie to create a video DVD - for that you need iDVD:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

    Try this.
Open your home movie in QuickTime Player X. (Or right click on your home movie in the Finder and select Open With... QuickTime Player.
Then click the Commenad Key and the letter I at the same time to open the Inspector.
Tell us what you see next to the word Format: in the Inspector.

    As  to iPhoto
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • IMovie 7.01 and encoded movies

I have already posted questions arround problems with 7.0 iMovie and the video quality when publishing to the Gallery on .Mac.
However, now I have installed the patch (7.01) I am keen to see if this patch fixes alot of my encoded video quality issues.
I unpublished the existing videos from my Gallery, and figured if I re-publish iMovie will re-encode and the re-publish my video content.
It appears this is not the case. When I tell iMovie to re-publish and inform iMovie of the movie file size it just tries copy the original (and awful quality) movie back to the gallery without re-encoding.
Does anyone know how I can overcome this, and were iMovie stores the H.264 encoded files so I can delete them and force iMovie to re-encode everything fresh please?
    many thanks
