Imovie 10.1 not responding

I was creating a new event when imovie crashed and it has stopped responding on my 13" macbook pro with mountain lion recently upgraded to maverick

If iMovie does not launch anymore try deleting its preference file at:
~Library/preferences/com.apple.iMovieApp.LSSharedFileList.plist
and restart your Mac.  (This won't affect your iMovie Library contents)

  • Can't burn iMovie to iDVD (not responding) - after "Encoding Audio"

    Hello,
I have a similar post in the iDVD board, but thought someone in this section may be able to help as well.
I have a 15 minutes project (almost 2 GB) iMovie show that I've attempted to burn to DVD through iDVD (4 times with the same problem)...
It goes through the "encoding menus" and videos, but gets stuck on "Encoding Audio" and in my Force Quit window says (Not Responding). I have almost 12 GB free on my PowerBook G4 and successfully burned a test DVD of this last week before completion (when I only had 7 free GB - I also added on another 2 minutes since then)...
Any help or ideas? I need to get this done ASAP...
    Thanks
    Chris

Chris, what I've found is that patience is the key here. You really can't count on the progress bar to let you know how far along in the process you are. I've run into the same problem as you. When the burn symbol stops spinning and you get the beachball/lollipop don't rush right off to force quit. Just because the force quit menu shows that iDVD is NOT RESPONDING does not mean that all is lost. What made me realize that iDVD was still working was the Activity Monitor located in your Utilities folder under applications (applications/utilities/activity monitor).
Do yourself a favor and run this app while burning you project. When you get to the point where it appears to hang on you check the status of iDVD in the activity monitor window. More than likely it will show that iDVD is still using a good % of your CPU (%CPU column numbers will constantly change as iDVD demands more or less from your processor). You may also notice that it may show that iDVD is not responding (as well as a couple other processes that are related to the prog), this doesn't mean a thing because iDVD is in reality still chugging along. Of course if the %CPU column is showing 0.00 then iDVD has indeed stopped workin in which case you do have some issues.
    Hope this helps

  • Failed to burn iMovie project, iDVD  "not responding"

A preemptive thanks for your time.
I am trying to burn iMovie projects through iDVD. I have done this successfully in the past. What happens now is after going through many of the steps up through Encoding Video, the process gets stuck when the status window says "Encoding Audio". No error message occurs or anything like that, the burn wheel stops spinning, and the "multicolored wheel of computer confusion" pops up. Needless to say this means that I am even more confused than the computer and examining the iDVD icon in the dock reveals that it is "not responding."
This same problem happens with two similar projects (one of which was burned successfully in the past.) I am using Sony DVD-R disks. The projects are the typical size for about 50 minutes of edited iMovie project (15GB).
    HELP!

    As Rich says:
    This question is frequently asked!
iDVD is probably not 'hanging'. Disregard any messages that iDVD is not responding. It is. Do not force quit.
Encoding audio is the slowest part of rendering, and can take many hours. Great patience, even an intermittent alternative hobby, is called for.
Make sure no other application is running, make sure you have not set the hard disk to go to sleep and that the screen saver will not come on. Leave it overnight, or have a 36 hole game of golf.
Sooner or later iDVD will finish!
(The current record mentioned here for encoding a DVD with lots of added audio etc is 47 hours!)

  • I have a MacBook Air, my iMovie is not responding... how do I make it work?

    HI,
My MacBook Air, was bought less than 4 months ago. I have been able to use imovie for the past 2-3 months. But now, the iMovie application is not responding. I have tried again and again. I shut down the Macbook Air. I restarted it and it just does not respond. My MacBook is up to date, but iMovie does not respond.

    Hey samwise_lotr,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Start the computer in safe mode and see if iMovie opens. If it works you may want to remove unnecessary login items.

  • My imovie project "hangs" when I try to edit it & enters in not responding

Hello please help me, I'm almost done with my trip project in imovie and it was working fine until I added one of the last songs and imovie entered in not responding. I forced quit and keep trying to make it work & the program opens with the event library perfectly but as soon as I try to edit it moving the cursor over the project it immediately becomes not responding "hangs" . I tried in my project library with another previous project and it works fine.
The project is 245mb and 1.15 hr, I still have 63GB free, do u think is the memory ? can I save my project? I spent many hours working on it.
    Thank you

After a few restarts project began to work.

  • How can I export a finished project from iMovie when the "share" function will not respond?

Hopefully someone might have an answer for me. I am trying to export a finished project to You Tube. However, when trying to choose the file, it does not show up in the finished project list. I have gone back to iMovie to see if I've made a mistake with finalizing it. It seems to be finalized, but I cannot share it to anything (You Tube, Facebook, iTunes). I click on share and it does not respond. I click on File, scroll down to share, it does nothing. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you reslove it?

I experienced the same problem as mreingrover. The Share features of iMovie appear to be completely unimplemented.
I had had MacKeeper installed for a short while on my previous Mac; never on my new MacBook Pro. I could not find any trace of it in Application Support, Launch Daemons, or LaunchAgents, in either my user Library or the root Library. But I figured maybe there was some trace somewhere that had been copied over from the old system, so I deleted iMovie and went to reinstall it from the App Store.
Now the App Store wants $14.95 for an app that has never worked right, and which is (I think) supposed to be free with my new MacBook Pro Retina.

  • IMovie 08 version 7.1 not responding - spinning rainbow

    Hello,
It seems like there are a lot of people reporting that after the update to iMovie 7.1 - they can't use iMovie with their pre-existing data (pictures/movies/projects/preferences).
Here are some steps to see if you have the same problem that I had, some steps to isolate the issue, and one thing that worked for me to get iMovie 7.1 working again (by deleting my old projects and preferences)
Please read over one other article before attempting to move your preferences - it covers the basics of isolating software issues - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25398 - you'll also want to make notes on paper when you start moving folders in case it doesn't work and you want to undo the changes you make.
    1) Do you have the problem?
If activity monitor and/or force quit window show that iMovie is drawn in red and not responding for more than 5 minutes. If you normal quit the program (command Q) - iMovie will exit promptly - there should not be a need to force quit the application.
    2) Isolate the issue.
Your mac could have other problems and iMovie might not be the issue. I would make a new account in the account preference pane, log out of your accout and log in to the new account. Fire up iMovie - if it hangs there too with no prior preferences, no old events, no movies in the iPhoto library - you can be pretty sure there's something else going wrong. It might be worth re-installing the updates or reloading your OS - but the workaround I will propose below won't likely help you find or fix your problem.
    3) Workaround
Set aside your old preferences and movies to get iMovie 7.1 working again. Then you should be able to re-import the raw video again and do some work with your current version of software (since there is no uninstall for this update). This won't actually fix your data or the iMovie program - you'll have to wait for another article or tool or update if you can't leave behind your old data... If you have lots of time, you might try things one by one to figure out what exactly was wrong - but I didn't have the time or inclination to debug this further - so I'll document what I've done in case it helps someone else...
    a) Quit iMovie (heck - quit all apps you can since I will propose moving the caches aside)
    b) Make a folder on your desktop called "old" or whatever you please and move these things there:
Your iMovie preferences stored in ~/Library/Preferences
Your iMovie data folders (Projects, Events, etc...) stored in ~/Movies
Your Caches folder stored in ~Library
    c) Log out of your account (so any programs using old Caches are forced to make new Cache files)
    d) Log back in to your account. If you are not paranoid - fire up iMovie - it should start fine. At that point you can pick to leave the old projects behind and start again - or quit iMovie and move the old folders back (trash Caches - move the other items back to where they were before overwriting the "new" Preferences and folders...
    e) If you are paranoid or firing up iMovie still didn't work - download and reinstall iLifeSupport81.dmg and iMovie_710.dmg to be sure you have the latest versions installed correctly.
    Good luck,
    Mike
p.s. I don't think anyone that has this problem could have fixed their data to prevent this "lock up" - and since it's fairly widely reported - I'm hoping a new update might be able to let iMovie 7.1 handle the same data that iMovie 7.0 was using just fine before the update. For those that program - here is a sample of my iMovie when it locked up...
<pre>2007-09-27 21:33:37.299 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
2007-09-27 21:33:37.309 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
2007-09-27 21:33:37.309 sample[405\] threadreadstack: stack appears to be corrupt
or in inconsistent state. Truncating stack.
    </pre>
(the stack was really corrupt - this line was printed 598 times while the sample program was trying to see what iMovie was up to when the beach ball was spinning - it's not normal for a properly running program to have a corrupt stack so I'm not surprised that iMovie could never regain it's wits once it went off the deep end so to speak while looking over the files it was preparing to work with)
Here's the good part of the sample that seems to show the program in the process of building up the list of media it needs to work with (which needs to happen when the program starts and before we get to use the program)
    <pre>299 -[ILMediaGroupsTreeController reloadAllGroups\]
    299 -[ILMediaGroupsTreeController filteredGroupHeirarchy:\]
    299 -[ILMediaBrowserView _shouldDisplayMediaGroup:\]
    299 -[ILMediaGroup filteredAllMediaObjectsCount\]
    299 -[ILMediaGroup allMediaObjects\]
    299 -[ILMediaGroup allMediaObjects_SearchedGroups:\]
    261 -[NSArray containsObject:\]
    261 _NSArrayIndexOfObject
    175 _ArrayIndexOfObject
    97 objc_msgSend
    </pre>
Again - I don't have source code for iMovie - so I may be way off on my guess - but it seems like the program version 7.0 wrote or handled data in a way that makes 7.1 mighty unhappy.

    Mike,
I also had a bunch of bugs appear when I got the automatic update.
I went and offloaded this file
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovie71.html
And the bugs were not there after I reinstalled.
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers,
I'm now tryign to figure out the volume controls.....

  • Imovie not responding after trying to import big file.

I have been attempting to import a large file onto imovie, and just before the file is finished and says that it will be imported in "under a minute" It will say that imovie is not responding. I've tryed restarting my macbook, and trying again with the same result. This is frustrating because I have uploaded a lot of home videos in which I need to edit and get onto dvd. please help!

I have been attempting to import a large file onto imovie
How do you define 'large'? iMovie is designed to handle DV streams running at 13GB per hour!
What is the source of those files? What kind of files are they?
How would you be able to find out how much space you have free?
That really is pretty basic stuff. Every time you open a new Finder window it will tell you at the bottom of the window!
You don't say what Mac you have, and why are you still on 10.4.10 instead of updating to 10.4.11?
For iMovie to work at its best you need at least 20GB of free space.

  • Hi All, My iMovie opens and few secs later gets stuck! Not Responding! Any idea?

    Hi All,
My iMovie opens and few secs later gets stuck! Not Responding!
Any idea? All up to date, OS X, MacBookAir...

Check memory and disk space (use Activity Monitor), and please report back. Also try closing all other apps.
What version of iMovie and OS X?

  • IMovie won't open - "Application Not Responding"

I can't get iMovie to successfully launch. When I try, the iMovie program window never shows. Right clicking on the active iMovie icon in the dock shows "Application Not Responding."
I've tried restarting, booting into safe mode, and reinstalling iMovie. No luck.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings. It was suppose
to have been fixed in v30.

  • IMovie is not responding, the cursor just keeps circling

I upgraded with the snow leopard, ilife, iwork. It was installed on 2/14/2010. I made one movie project and now I can't get into it. It comes up on screen but the cursor just keeps spinning and it will not respond.

First quit or force quit iMovie.
Now drag that preference file out to the desktop.  You are correct, the prefernece file is basically just a special kind of text file.
    Now try relaunching iMovie.
If that doesn't work, the next thing I'd try is to see if iMovie works with a different user account.
