IMovie 10 have to force quit during update of Project files
I have installed Mavericks and now have the newest iMovie. I get the following dialog box (see below) when it is on the last file during an Update. I click "OK" and then the bar continues to scroll and I get the spinning beach ball. Finally I have to force quit iMovie as it is not responding. I have tried just having it import just the most recent movies but get the same dialog box. When I try the old iMovie 9.9 it loads all the projects with no problem. I had two projects that used movies created on an iPhone 5 so I removed those two projects from the projects folder, but no change.
Anyone have a suggestion on how to correct this situation?
I guess I can just work with new projects in this new version as the projects I've been trying to update are completed and saved to other media.
iMovie 10.0.1 has been released to address reliability issues when updating projects and events from previous versions of iMovie. Specifically, iMovie could appear to stop responding or quit unexpectedly during the update process.
If you encountered these issues, you should now be able to update your projects and events successfully. To do this, visit the link below and follow the instructions listed in the section "If updating is interrupted or takes an extended period of time."

Have to force-quit Mail - Update did not fix
The update seemed to fix all of the issues I had with SL, except for the spinning wheels in Mail, and that Mail will not quit without a force-quit. It will even cancel a restart. Am I the only one left with this issue?
Problem
Here is what is happening. Btw I am using a Dutch version so my apologies if I translate menu-options wrong.
Mail is opened at startup. When I want to quit (CMD-Q) mail, nothing happens and the program gets in a sort of wait state. The system doesn't say that mail is not responding anymore. When I open the Mail-menu several options are greyed-out, including the CMD-Q as if the program is waiting for something. After waiting 15 minutes still the same and the only way to end mail is by using the force quit option.
If Mail is opened and I use the red X to close the window it isn't possible to open it anymore. Stopping the normal way isn't possible either and I am in the same situation as above and need to force-quit Mail.
If I leave Mail open and want to shutdown the computer I have to force quit Mail, because otherwise I cannot shutdown anymore.
*Solutions I've tried*
Using the Rebuild menu-option doesn't help.
I have downloaded the complete 10.6.2 dmg-file and re-installed it. This seemed to fix the problem, at least for a little while. But unfortunately after a day the same problem came back
How can this be possible?
Is there anyone out there who has the same problem and knows how to fix this? Would it help to re-install the mailprogram? How do I do this?
This is happening on the new computer of my father. I have convinced him to make the switch from Windows, but this situation is making me feel a bit embarrassed -
I open Imovie that i bought on the app store but it isnt being responsive an di have to force quit because it wont open
If you got disks with your system then you use software update to update. If you purchased the software from to app store or it came pre installed with no disks the you get updates via the app store under purchased software.
Upgrades must always be purchased

I was recently prompted to update iPhoto and make changes to the library. I did it but it keeps hanging up in step 5 or 6 and won't complete the cycle. I have used force quit, rebooted and started again several times. How do i get this to work?
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again. -
hi after updating to Mountain Lion, it becomes difficult to quit Mail, always have to Force Quit. And while Mail is on standby, the fan keeps on running full power, the laptop is hot. Why is this happening?
If your computer was hot it wasn't asleep - it either didn't go to sleep or it work up after you put it to sleep. I've seen both things happen. First, read this article and follow the instructions.
1) For the next few days/weeks pay attention to the blinking light on the front of your computer when you close the lid. Don't put the computer into your backpack/case until it begins to blink. Wait a minute or so after it starts to blink to make sure it doesn't stop blinking - the signal it woke back up.
2) having followed the above instructions, if you take the computer out and it is hot again or if you take it out and discover it has powered down (you'll know this because when it starts up the battery will be drained and you'll see a progress bar over a ghostly display that will eventually become normal) immediately start the Console program and perform a search on 'sleep' and then 'wake'. This should bring up all the recent log files about sleep state changes (going to sleep and waking up). You should see one for when you put the computer to sleep and put it away and the next one should be just after you got it out. You'll find at least one though that shouldn't be there. That will tell you when the computer work up (when it shouldn't have) and might give a clue as to why.
One of the whys could be a magnet that is making the computer think the lid has been opened. -
Itunes, have to force quit, will not work since update
After the itunes and quicktime updates, itunes no longer works. After about 10 seconds after launching itunes, it tries to process and then you have to force quit itunes.
any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Jimbrookesuk,
Thanks for asking...
A Quick primer
On Macs, the Macintosh HD (or whatever you have renamed it to) icon is on the desktop, right?
So if you open this, you see a Library folder, it is also referred to as /Library
(with the "/" indicating root level, i.e. Macintosh HD)
If you go to your Home folder, it has a Library folder too. It is referred to as ~/Library. (With the "~/" indicating user level)
Now, these steps (taken from KB 25398, section B3), summarize this well:
1. Go to ~/Library
2. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
3. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
4. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash.
5. If issue persists, go to /Library.
6. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
7. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
8. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash
Hope this helps,
Generik

MAX OS X - version 10.7.5 :
For some weeks now, I have to force-quit 9 times out of 10 to get out of my e-mail account (g-mail). This only happens on my i-Mac, never with my other devices (Macbook Pro, i.Phone, i-Pad).
Does anybody know what could be the reason for this ?
ThanksOK, you have iMovie 08, which is also known is iMovie Version 7.1.4. It has been a few years since i used this version, so this is based on memory.
The only components you must have in the Library/QuickTime folder are the AppleIntermediateCodec.component and the AppleMPEG2Codec.component.
All the others could potentially be causing problems. I would drag the DivX components, the Flip4Mac components, and the Google Camera components to the Desktop temporarily, so nothing is left in this folder except the two Apple components.
Then restart your Mac and start iMovie. If it works, yay!
If you still need these other components for some other app, you can probably get updated DivX components for free at Perian.org.
You can get updated Flip4Mac components by running WMV Player and updating. It should prompt you to update automatically.
I am not sure about the Google components, but if you are running something that needs them, it should prompt you to install the current versions.
If none of that works, post back. -
Song NEARLY imports, then have to force quit.
Hello all,
had some great advice here before with success, but this time I fear it may be a dead end. A little background info then in point form may be in order this time:
1. Have recently upgraded to iTunes 7.1 and 7.1.1
2. Successfully imported 1000 songs so far with bought and copied CD's
3. During latest incarnation of iTunes have also been able to import CD's with 'data protection' (in the same box set however some just get ejected after loading straight away).
4. COPIED VERSIONS I HAVE IMPORTED IN THE PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF I TUNES ARE NOW LOCKING ITUNES AND I HAVE TO FORCE QUIT EVERY TIME.
5. I have highlighted the above as with the remaining 10 CD's (purchased and previously burned) this seems to happen.
6. Have tried importing using various formats: AAC, MPE3, etc without success.
7. Superdrive was recently replaced.
Now, where it all goes South is the last few millimeters on the import bar in iTunes, on the first song, before the lock up.
Data protection I can understand but please bear in mind that those CD's have been imported OK in the past but now won't.
Also, some of those Data marked CD's (I had previously imported) will simply be ejected if iTunes is NOT open, others if iTunes was previously closed.
Seems to be little pattern in it at this stage except of the 'upgrade itself'. If the CD's (burned or bought) load, the force quit always seems to have to be initiated during the last few seconds of the first import. Tried also to uncheck the 1st song, with the same result.
If anyone has some pointers, let me know and we can try to narrow it down. My whole reson for importing is that ALL our 10 year collection was the victim of a break-in and I would like to secure this through back-ups nowdays.
Cheers
PS Excuse the untimely replies as Australia is many time zones away.Well, after my posts and updates I have finllally imported nearly 1800 songs. The main work around for those that locked up iTunes just before the 1st import has always successfully been: Play first song and then import (something certainly new). The remaining 3 CD's are even a stranger even:
1. 2 burned CD's are shown as 'empty' (zero data) and won't mount. Have previously imported some songs from those CD's and there is no problem playing them in the home CD player.
2. 1 bought CD 'cycles' through reading and then ejects itself. Whilst it has 'data' on the reverse of it, I have imported one with an identical print (even came from the same box set).
Could this change maybe have to do with region code more than iTunes and OSX update? I did mention that this is a new Superdrive as well. When I get the chance, will try them at an Apple store and see what happens. How annoying though, only three to go and all my imports are done.
Any tackers on this final problem?
Cheers -
I really hope someone can help me. I've been having an issue with apps on my MBP crashing for like 9 months and it's getting worse and I'm losing my mind! It started with Firefox. Everything will be going along fine, and then suddenly I'll try to scroll down on a web page or click a link or really do anything and there will be a rainbow scrolly wheel delay that can last anywhere from 5-20 seconds. I'll tolerate it for a little while, but eventually I can't take it anymore and try to shut down Firefox, which I can only do with a force quit. Sometimes the delay is accompanied by a crazy increase in CPU which triggers the fans, but sometimes it's not. It usually happens when I have multiple tabs open. A while back I tried removing all my Firefox add-ons and plug-ins and whatnots (including Flash and Java), to no avail. So I broke down and started using Safari...and the same thing happened. Went back to FF and keep upgrading to the newest versions, but the problem hasn't gone away.
Then, a couple of months ago, a few of my other "big" apps (i.e. iTunes and Adobe Reader) started experiencing similar delay issues. No scrolly wheel appears on these, but everything just takes forever and the only way to close these apps is to force quit. Over the past month or so, the issue has spread to my MS Office apps. For these, the delay is largely contained to opening and closing new docs/presentations, but I have to force quit to close them too.
In February, I decided to move to Lion, but changed my mind when I read that people were still having issues with decreased speed and spotty internet connectivity. I was afraid to do anything that might make things worse.
My MBP is turning 5 this month. I wouldn't be entirely surprised to hear that she's just experiencing the effects of old-age (after all, 5 years is 2X longer than my old PC lasted), but I've been unemployed for well over 2 years and am not exactly itching to get a new computer right now if I don't have to. I did upgrade the hard drive about a year ago, but things were fine for the first few months after that. Maybe that wouldn't create problems right away, though. I don't know. Anyway, I'm running OS 10.6.8, Firefox 13, iTunes 10.6.1, Adobe Reader 10.1.3 and Office 2008.
I would be most grateful to anyone who can offer a potential home-repair solution (one which does not require mad IT skills), knows what the problem might be and/or how much it might cost to have it professionally diagnosed/repaired. Depending on what it could cost to diagnose/fix it, it might not even pay to bother.
Thank you!!!Mark,
Have you checked the Fonts folder found in Home/Library/Fonts folder if you have any fonts in there, try moving them to the trash but do not empty the bin.
Read Kurt Lang's ~ Font Management in Mac OS X
on required fonts, for apple applications.
This app is a goodie Font Finagler helps find & remove corrupt fonts.
Have you tried a test account so you can narrow done if this is isolated to your username account, or if it is system wide.
Disabling "troublemakers" doesn't always work, uninstalling can be more telling & what are they anyway the troublemakers you speak of?
What have you tried to troubleshoot?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
Do you use any internet cleaning apps to clean internet clutter?
OnyX Niel'sClearing caches with OnyX
Cache cleaning does help, but beyond empty the cache under Safari.
Checked the console.log & system.log for any clues?
Lastly are you very committed to running 10.4.7? (If your spex are correct)
if you decide to update see Macmaps , yes this hanging of apps. should be tended
first.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk of your internal drive (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway) or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
#3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

Safari 3.2.1 freezes up, have to force quit
Speak slowly. Like my car, I just drive this thing. I don't know what's under the hood (since about 1975). I see a lot of other folks are having problems like this. I don't keep a journal, but I think this started when I downloaded the last update.
I've been using Safari without a hitch for about four years, and suddenly, six weeks ago or so, it started freezing up while browsing (blue bar stops after "http", spinning beachball of death appears) and I have to force quit to get out. There are two user accounts on my computer, and the other one doesn't seem to be having a problem (it's rarely used). I can browse for a minute or two, four or five sites, and then the problem occurs. I'm using Firefox as a backup, and not having problems with it. I haven't updated Firefox lately, and don't intend to as long as it works.
I've tried repairing disk permissions, deleting Safari plist, clearing my cache, history, and cookies, and reset Safari. Nothing changed, and I'm a little reluctant to start trying all the suggestions I see on various strings.
I've sent dozens of crash reports to Apple. I assume others have too. Must be a pretty tough problem if Apple hasn't issued an update to fix it by now. Can anybody with more savvy help?
I tried including the latest crash report in this post and got this report:
500 Unable to insert thread into the database: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'body' at row 1
Resin Professional 3.0.23 (built Mon, 22 Jan 2007 02:25:17 PST)Klaus 1's suggestion doesn't work for me. When I select System Preferences > Network, I get a window titled Network, with two dialog boxes: DNS Server in which it says "10.0.0.1" and Search Domains, which is blank. When I double click on my connection type, nothing happens. I don't get the dialog boxes Klaus 1 describes.
Here's some more crash report. I still get the "too big" report when I try to send it all. "500 Unable to insert message into the database: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'body' at row 1"

I have to force quit mail every time I want to shut down my macbook
I know there are several other posts asking the same question but I've been through all of them and I can't find which is the application that is blocking my mail from closing. Here is the diagnostics test I ran.

I have to force quit Mail almost every time I shut down my computer?
Every time my mac boots up I have recovered files.

My hard drive has 70.93 GB available, yet when i have more than one internet tab open, i have to force quit google chrome because 'there is no more available application memory'. How can I solve this? I have a 2009 macbook pro running on 10.6.8. I have tried updating to mavericks through the mac app store but after it downloading for a day i got an error message saying there was a problem with the download. The same thing happens if i try to update itunes or the mac app store. After research, i have also tried repairing disk permissions, but every time they do get repaired the 'repair' button still appears, i'm not sure if it's because it was unable to repair the initial problems or if it just keeps detecting new ones.
2 GBs is a minimum in which you can do many things, but not concurrently. Be very careful to not install third-party add-ons, limit the number of applications you choose to enter in Login Items, run as few applications concurrently as you demand.
I would consider adding more RAM to your computer. Your model supports 8 GBs, so I would install that. -
Safari gives me the spinning wheel every time I browse, have to force-quit
Hello,
I've been having a ton of issues with Safari these past few weeks. I'm using version 3.2.1 (4524.27.1) and I've reset, trashed preferences, nuked fonts, run OnyX, repaired permissions... and I'm still having the same problems.
Basically after I've browsed for about 5 minutes, Safari will hang on whatever page I'm trying to load, whether I'm loading up pages in multiple tabs or just a single page. Sometimes I can get the page to finish loading and continue browsing if I hit "stop" and "reload" a bunch of times, but mostly I get the spinning beach ball wheel, and then Safari shows up as "not responding" in my Force Quit Applications window. The program doesn't crash - it just gives me the spinning ball until I have to force-quit, relaunch, and start over - only to do it all again.
It's driving me bonkers - I even had the cable company come out and check my cable modem connection (I'm using RoadRunner), but it was running normally.
Below is my console log from this morning, when I started up and had to force-quit Safari again. Hopefully the issue is really obvious and I can get back to normal:

First off, thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried each one - unfortunately, Safari is still giving me the spinning wheel when I surf for more than a couple of minutes.
Taking QuicktimeKirk's advice, I did a discussions search for "DNS issue" and found several threads that recommended adding OpenDNS DNS Servers to the Network preferences pane (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220). I also registered at the OpenDNS website and installed their "OpenDNS Updater" software.
After I did this, Safari seemed to actually go to the spinning wheel, freeze-up state quicker... although I might be a bit paranoid.
I forgot to mention that I already had "Warn when visiting a fraudulent website" checked off the in the preferences pane, and replacing Safari with Firefox as the default browser unfortunately didn't make much of a difference.
I'm copying below my most recent Console log. Perhaps there's something different I need to do with DNS...? Quicktime Kirk, if you suspect it's something to do with DNS, could you please be more specific with regards to what I should be looking for? I really appreciate it.
Thanks again for all the tips, everyone. I've got my fingers crossed that with your help, I'll be back to normal soon!
