IMovie 10 Project library folders gone?

Where did the project folders go from the project library in iMovie 9. I can't find them anymore in iMovie 10.

Thanks Joe Seidler. Sad but exactly what I was fearing.
I just issued a refund and wrote: I don't want to waste money for a program I cannot use. My workflow is built on project and event folders. There is no warning that says: "Beware from upgrading to iMovie 10. There are some core functions missing." I will use iMovie 9. Please refund. Thank you.

  • Imovie 8 project library thumbnails not showing up after import

I have imovie 8 on my mac at home and I edited some footage and then wanted to bring it into work. I copied all the necessary event libraries and project libraries and I'm having a problem viewing them in my imovie 8 at work.
I stored the Event library files on my external hard drive, since I don't have enough room on my internal drive, and copied over the project libraries into my imovie folder. After copying everything over I can see my event library raw data in imovies viewing pane. The project library file names are visible, but when I click on them to view I get a greyed out thumbnail with an exclamation point. It says "This media's files are currently not available"
Can anyone shed some light on this. I want to be able to edit the projects I created at home.
    Thanks

All I've got is imovie 3, and i'm making a full-length dvd/video for a senior project... The project library file names are visible, but when I click on them to view I get a greyed out thumbnail with an exclamation point. It says "This media's files are currently not available"
This should be expected. Projects use absolute resource references, therefore, unless you "clone" the exact drive/path names between original project files and original resource files from the home computer and replicate it at work, you have "orphaned" your resource files.

  • Missing iPhoto Thumbnail Images in iMovie Project Library

    Okay, here goes...
I'd created a short movie and have it in iMovie's project library. The movie included video footage from a dv camera as well as video from my digital photo camera. I recently reorganized and merged several events folders in iPhoto from my vacation, which included parts of the video used in the iMovie short movie project. Now, when I select the project in iMovie, some of the thumbnails are missing from the video sequence to the right of the project name.
It still plays (thankfully), but it's irritating me that I cannot figure out why the thumbnails have disappeared.
Does it have something to do with merging iPhoto files? If so, or even if not, how do I fix this and have the thumbnails reappear?

Something similar is happening to me. I created a project a couple of months ago in iMovie '08, and now the "upper window" thumbnails are showing with an exclamation mark - but just the video clips! The photos are still there. You can see the thumbnail with the exclamation mark and when you drag the cursor through it to see it play, it only does in the little damaged thumbnail but not in the screen. After touching it, it becomes black. It does not play at all when the project is played completely. I someone finds out how to solve this, please advise.
    Thanks so much.

  • Lost Project library files -   edited functional film clips  have caution d

I have edited a number of clips from one minute to 10. I left them in the project Library. They seemed fine and I left them there for later transfer to iDVD. Now a number of the files have caution ! sign and the edited project is non functional with only one frame.
I believe the event library is still OK so information is there to reedit- What has happened- can I somehow retrieve the Project library folders intact again?

    Hey!!!!!
Your problem sound quite common. Is it possible that you deleted or moved any of the clips from their default location. iMovie always stores its clips and events in one place.
If you have moved ANYTHING that you used in the movie (pictures, music or clips) that could mess up the movie. I would advise not moving any of the elements of your movie until you have transfered it into a Quicktime movie.

  • IMovie Lost Project

I was working on a 23 minute movie and had numerous edits, titles and chapter markers. I exported the movie to Media Browser and when I opened it from the Media Browser file, it just showed the whole Events file -not the Project file. Then when I went back to iMovie, the Project was totally gone - all that work just gone.
I can't find the edited Project file. I've used Spotlight-can't find it anywhere.
I can't understand why this happened. And if I have to do it all over again, how do I avoid this? I'm new to this version of iMovie.
I want to burn a DVD using Toast.
    Thanks for your help.

Never mind. The file magically reappeared, but it's a learning curve on this new iMovie.

  • Project Library directions needed

I appologize for my very novice question, but does anyone know where I could find some directions on how the iMovie 09 Projects Library is supposed to work? It seems to me that there are at least 2 to 3 different areas there that a projects gets saved to. Is this the breakdown of video, audio, etc.? I had deleted a file there once before thinking it was a duplicate copy of a project, but later found that the original project no longer has audio.
Thanks for any help/direction you can give.

You cannot use the Finder to move an iMovie project to an external drive or anywhere at all. You need to move it within iMovie. Otherwise iMovie will not be able to load it.
It's difficult to understand what you are describing. When you are talking about clicking into the "Project Library", are you referring to the contents of the iMovie Projects folder, or the contents of a project file seen by clicking on '"Show Package Contents" on one of the project files. What you are describing isn't making sense to me.
Could you be talking about the contents of the "Project Library" window displayed within iMovie itself. In that case there should be only one file shown per project.
Sorry I can't be more helpful. It's hard to understand what you are looking at.

If it was working on 10/1, why not open up the most recent backup library with a timestamp of that day. Unless you specified otherwise, your backup folder is in Movies in your home folder. You can double-click one to open it in FCP.
The update command actually wants a mounted drive selected.
I suggest not going into the library bundles and moving or modifying folders/files except as a last resort. It sounds like both libraries are corrupted.

  • My macbook suddenly shut down, and when rebooted, imovie project was completely gone.  No record of it at all.  Have been working on it for days, and it has always been there.  Any way to restore it?  Thanks.

My macbook suddenly shut down, and when rebooted, imovie project was completely gone.  No record of it at all.  Have been working on it for days, and it has always been there.  Other projects are still there.  Any way to restore it?  Thanks.

    I figured it out!!!
Hey guys! Here's what I did that saved my project.
    -SHORT VERSION-
Use the Finder window on your Mac to copy and paste your old project (the one not showing up in imovie) to a new folder so that iMovie will see it.
    -LONG VERSION-
    CONDITIONS:
The project has to exist on your hard drive. To see if it's hiding around somewhere go to:
Home (your name)>Movies>iMovie Library (right click and select Show Package Contents)
In the iMovie Library folder (the default is usually the date) open it to see if your Project is inside. If it is, you are in luck!
    RESTORING PROJECT:
    Open iMovie
start a new folder under the iMovie Library (again, the default is usually todays date)
    Close iMovie
In the finder window (as explained above in the CONDITIONS section) select the files and folders of your project and copy them (in my case these consist of folders called Analysis Files, Original Media, "MYPROJECT", Render Files, Shared Items)
There should now be a folder with today's date in that Show Package Contents folder.
Paste a copy of your project;s files into this folder.
When it is done copying, open up the "Original Media" folder and all of your images and clips should be present.
reopen iMovie. Your project should show up in the Libraries list.
*If your full project isn't showing in the iMovie timeline (mine just had empty bubbles where all my clips and audio should be) try dragging and dropping the clips and images from the project's "Original Media" folder into the import section of your project. Once the files were reimported, iMovie recognized them all and put them back in the correct place for me.
    Hope this helps someone!

  • IMovie 11 projects no longer working, preview window is glitched or black, event library not playing imported vids

I am having a lot of trouble with iMovie 11.  I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" for the sole purpose of editing surgical videos for work.  iMovie 11 was working great initially for me (taking full length surgical video - up to 2 hours) and editing these down to anywhere from 5 to 30 min videos highlighting crucial steps for the surgeries along with transitions, ken burns, etc  (with the plan of overlaying narrative voice-over later).  I had about 15 of these videos edited sitting in my Project Library and multiple imported videos (dvd to m4v via handbrake then imported via iMovie 11) in my Project Library.  Now none of my projects play in the preview window, it's either black or a weird glitchy picture (like messed up pic of my doc or desktop... really weird) and only about 2 of my imported videos play in the project library, otherwise they are just black when I roll over them.  My projects are still intact as far as edited clip lengths and transitions, but nothing plays, even in full screen mode.  I tried making a new project and the imported video shows in the event library but when I add it to a project it's black (but does play in full screen mode, but impossible to edit this way).  I think the audio is actually intact although i'm not positive because these videos don't have any audio (there's some baseline level that fluctuates on the audio bars).
I tried finalizing and exporting a project as an m4v (one that was a combination of two edited imported videos - one of the source imported vids working in the event library and the other not working) and the first half is all glitched up with no surgery video, but the second half is there with the transitions and everything (the half that is working in the event library).  This part does not show up when I am trying to edit the project.
fyi - I had deleted some of the videos from my event library to unclutter a little some time ago, the projects were still working after that.
I can find all of my imported videos (in .mov format) that should be working in the event library when I look in the folder:
    users/me/movies/iMovie events
If someone could please help me resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it.  I put a lot of work and time into these videos and it would be near impossible to start from scratch (which would probably be on some other movie editor like windows movie maker since my iMovie is not working properly even for new projects).  I'm hoping this is just some sort of glitch that can be fixed and my projects are still salvagable.  I can't remember if this started after I did a system software update or not.  This will be a huge dissapointment for me in the Apple platform if I have to scrap my projects because I had just switched over from the PC platform.
I even got Norton antivirus and internet security to make sure I don't have some sort of weird virus.
    I have a Feb 2011 15 in MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz, 4 g RAM, 750 g HD, 1 g vid card.  iMovie ver 9.0.4.  Lion 10.7.2

Did you by any chance upgrade your Mac OS from version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.7 (Lion) during the time you were working in iMovie on all these projects?
If not, start by deleting the iMovie Preferences file.
    Go to the Desktop
Hold down the Option key and choose the Go Menu > Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move the .plist file to the trash and restart iMovie
See if the Project files react any differently. Failing that try doing a Repair Disk Permissions:
Restart the Mac, hold down the Option key continuously until 2 hard drive icons appear
Choose the Recovery Volume as your startup disk and let it run until you see the Desktop
Choose Disk Utility from the Recovery Menu
Run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
Reboot the Mac and when you see the Desktop appear launch iMovie
See if the Project files are the same or different. Next step after this is to one at a time take the Project folders out of users/me/movies/imovie projects. Move one to the desktop and start iMovie. Try skimming the projects that acted up recently. Moving one project at a time might help isolate which project may be causing problems. You can also place project folders back in their original location after doing this testing and iMovie will recognize them on the next relaunch. It won't hurt anything.

  • I have a finalized project in iMovie '11.  Shared it on Youtube, Facebook, and Vimeo.  Then, when I shared it to iDVD, it reverted to a previous version of the project, so my titles and pictures were out of sequence.  My final project is now gone!

I have a finalized project in iMovie '11.  Shared it on Youtube, Facebook, and Vimeo.  Then, when I shared it to iDVD, it reverted to a previous version of the project, so my titles and pictures were out of sequence.  Now, in my list of projects, my project is there, but finalized as the previous version which is all out of sequence.   My true final project is now gone!  What happend?
I didn't notice this problem until after the DVD was burned in iDVD.  Then, when I played the DVD in a public setting, I was a bit embarrassed by what played.

    Hi
    My first thoughts are
    • iMovie ill behaving - Trash the iMovie pref file - use to set things right
    • in reg. to Photos - Did You change iPhoto Photo Library - Then iMovie get's lost as it peeks into iPhoto on start up to see where photos are stored. Set iPhoto back to first Photo Library (when iMovie is not running) then start iMovie.

  • Highest level folders in Project Library

I haven't used iMovie since iMovie '06. At that time I created a project called "Old TV
Spots." I recently upgraded to a new MacBook Pro and imported video of a live concert into iMovie '09.
iMovie '09 imported my old project and there's now a folder called "Old TV Spots" at the highest level of the Project Library window. My live concert video ended up in this "Old TV Spots" folder.
The thing is, iMovie won't let me create another folder at the same level as the "Old TV Spots" folder, nor can I change the name of that folder: iMovie throws up a dialogue box that says "You may not use / . * ? : or the return key in names. Please choose another name." (Even when I just click out of my newly named folder I get this message.) I can, however, create folders within this folder, but not at the same level.
Is there anything I can do to regain some autonomy over the way I organize my projects? As it stands now, every project I create ends up in the not-always-relevant "Old TV Spots" folder.
    Thanks for any advice!
    Christopher

    Two things to try.
    1) Can you select the drive level? Or click VIEW/EVENTS BY DRIVE? can you see the internal drive listed in the project library list? If so, click the drive so it is selected and then click File/New Folder.
    2) In the Finder, go to Movies/iMovie Projects. You should see your current folder. You should be able to add other folders. Then restart iMovie.

  • Can't drag every project into new volume in Project Library (iMovie '09)

I am backing up my iMovie '09 projects (and their events) to an external hard drive. I am doing this from within iMovie, by dragging each project from the list that appears in the Project Library window onto the appropriate external drive that appears also in that window and selecting "Copy Project and Events." I have no trouble doing this... except...
The list of projects is quite long. There are times when the external drive is not visible in the window at the same time as the project I am trying to move. When I drag the project, it does not move "up" (or "down") the list, which remains (for lack of a better word) static; I can never drag it to the HDD volume. I hope this makes sense.
"Duplicate Project" only duplicates it on the current HD. There is no "Move to..." except "Move to trash." I can find no way to "select all" projects and drag the entire lot of them all at once into the desired volume.
What am I doing wrong or overlooking?
    (I'm using a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.)

I am in the habit of creating folders for my projects by year. If I have a single group of movies all on the same subject, I will create another folder for them under the year folder. For example, I have a folder for 20 movies I made during a cruise to Greece and Turkey under the 2008 folder.
Once everything is in Folders, it is simple to open one folder, close the rest, and you can see both the file and the target drive on the same screen. You may want to create a similar folder on the new drive, because I don't think you can copy an entire folder all at once.
Another trick to try at your own risk (i.e. test it first). You can move the first project over to the new drive from within iMovie. This will set up a proper iMovie Projects.localized folder on the external drive. Then try dragging some more projects to the external drive using the FInder.   Paths to Events are hard coded within projects, so you cannot move events this way, but it should work for projects. (But test it first and convince yourself).
I have done it this way when a drive was failing and I had to act quickly.

  • IMovie '11 How do I recover a project that appears within the IMovie Projects folder but does not show in the Project Library?

I have had my MBP for just over 3 months now!  Yes, I made the switch and up until now I have been quite happy.
I now have my Time Capsule, Apple TV running and am generally getting used to life as a Mac user.............even bought Aperture and loaded all the family photos.  Now time to make some Travel movies.
I have been working on a particular IMovie project for a few weeks now.  Size is 365MB.  Yesterday I closed IMovie and when accessing later that project is not available in the Project Library window.  It does appear in the IMovie Projects folder but I cannot open it.  I have copied the file to DVD just in case.  All up I have 4 Projects, the other 3 are practice files, smaller but they do appear in the Project Library.
I have scoured the bulletin boards and tried many suggested fixes to no avail.  Main suggestion was to remove the following files from Library/Preferences
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    com.apple.iApps.plist
However, this did not sort out my problem.  In the end I put back the original files.
Does anyone have a straightforward fix for my problem or is this one of those ongoing issues that that needs Apple's attention.
After all the file is there with the others.  They are available.
I realise that I can restore from Time Capsule but I am missing the last three days thanks to 'drop out'.
    Thanks.......

Yes, considering we have an ongoing 'glich' within an Apple program with no obvious solution, we should be able to direct it straight to an Apple rep.  I will peruse this possibility when I get a moment.
You can report the problem by providing feedback to Apple. In the iMovie app, from the menu select iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback. This will take you to an Apple page where you can complete a form and submit it to Apple.
The fix for this will probably turn out to be simple/easy.....................so why doesn't Apple comment and/or address it????
Other than the forum moderators, Apple doesn't normally monitor these forums, nor make comments on posts. So, it's up to us to report the problem to them directly (using the feedback form mentioned above).
As the problem has affected me just the one time (touch wood), I haven't bothered to report it as yet. But, after seeing your posts on this, I'm now reconsidering that. Something must be triggering it. My system is in pretty good shape, so I'm guessing it must be a glitch of some sort, either in Mountain Lion or in the iMovie app itself. Perhaps it's a 3rd party app causing the problem? It doesn't give us much confidence now, in that we may start worrying about losing other projects.
A good practice is to duplicate the project from time to time (something I'll be doing more of), although Time Machine backups also provide the necessary security. To duplicate, in Project Library view (where all the projects are listed) click on the project name so that it is highlighted, then select File > Duplicate Project. Alternatively, right-click (or Control-click) on the project name and select Duplicate Project from the pop-up menu. Of course, you may already know this. Duplicating probably won't guarantee that the copy will not also disappear from the Project Library, but is worth doing anyway.
As I mentioned in the post I linked to earlier, when the problem arose with my iMovie project I was using ProRes 422 clips I had imported from a Final Cut Pro X Event. My immediate thought was that ProRes 422 had caused the problem. But this of course may have been coincidental - reinforced now by your experience, where you are probably working with Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) clips.
Anyway, glad to hear that you've recovered your project through Time Machine. Unfortunately, I had to start from scratch as I had Time Machine turned off during my editing sessions (that's a story for another day).

  • How do I get back an imovie project that shows up in the Project library but doesn't show up in imovie itself?

Worked on an i-Movie project yesterday but when opened i-Movie this morning, the project showed a date of January 13 as last modified date and the project was completely empty.  When I look in Project Library, I can see the project from yesterday. How do I get it back into my i-Movie so it will open.  Thanks.

    Hi Rour and vc38,
A number of others here have posted about this problem, including me. See the following threads:

It's best to report this to Apple, as the more they hear from us the more likely we'll get a fix (hopefully). There is probably a common issue with this, but I'm struggling to think of what may have triggered the problem. Was it a "recent" update to iMovie or OS X Mountain Lion, or perhaps another updated app conflicting with iMovie?
To report the problem to Apple, in iMovie's menu click on iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback.
