Imovie 10 projects missing after crash mid export to theatre

Hi All
I converted to imovie 10 from 9 and the conversions all went well.
I have been using imovie 10, with some crashes but no major downside for a few weeks.
While using imovie and creating a couple of new movies imovie crashed in the process of exporting movies to theatre. When I reopened imovie the two projects were missing. Despite trying every strategy I could find on the net I havent been able to get them back.
If I "show package contents" of the imovie library I can see that that project and appropriate files still exist, imovie just isnt seeing them.
I am wondering if deleting the "CurrentVersion.flexolibrary" might be the solution?
Any help would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks

Solution!
Go to Users > your account > Library > Preferences
Find this file:
com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move it out of the Preferences folder.
Launch iMovie. It should rebuild the Events Library, iPhoto thumbnails, etcs. And your Projects will return.
It worked for me.
Hope it helps!

  • IMovie project corrupt after crash?

I have a problem with a seemingly corrupt iMovie project
I have been working on a holiday movie for over 12 hours
Today, my macbook pro crashed while editing the project
Aftwards I was unable to load the project.
Other, older projects can still be loaded with iMovie.
I suspect the project has been corrupted due to the crash.
I don't have any back-ups (Time Machine is not activated)
Are there any other ways to fix the corrupted file or is it permanently damaged and won't I be able to open it again?
Thanks for your help and insights!

I'm new to iMovie, and to the Mac, and for years I have heard about how wonderful the Mac is. While it doesn't have the same problems as a PC it has plenty of its own problems.
I just spent 20 straight hours putting together a movie in iMovie. As I clicked to make my very last tweak to my project, iMovie crashed.
I tried to get a hold of Apple support but their system doesn't allow access to an actual human being. Their system make you go through a series of steps to "arrange for a phone call from Apple". That system fails EVERY TIME. I get to the end and a messages pops up saying that they can't help with my problem at this time, try again. I've had a Mac for three months now and their support system fails every, single time.
So, on to the problem at hand. As I read the various forums about iMovie it has struck me as rather odd that no one seems to have a problem with the engineers at Apple creating a software package that does not allow you to save your work. Now, it took me all of a nano second to realize the likely out come of such stupidity. And, on my very first big project my prediction came true. iMovie crashed as I finished my project and destroying all of my work.
So my first question is, how could the engineers at Apple possibly justify not including a "save" and "save as" function to iMovie? The absurdity of this reaches new heights. This has disaster written all over it. And it appears that many people are having the same problems.
Secondly: I've read messages from people who seem to think that not having a "save" or "save as" function was a brilliant stroke of genius. OK, so this question goes out to those people. If it is so brilliant then please explain to me how I can recover my last twenty hours of work? If there had been a "save" function I would have been saving my project all along the way and I would only have lost the last half an hour or so and not the entire 20 hours.
So, tell me. Precisely. Step-by-step. How do I recover my work.

  • Imovie won't load project file after crash

    Hi All,
I was almost done with an iMovie project, and while I watching the preview, iMovie crashed.
After I opened iMovie again, the project was there anymore. I can see all other projects but the project I want, the one I was working on when it crashed.
I checked the forum for similar problems but no solution worked so far. The file is in the Projects Folder, I can even see the preview a thumbnail of the project.
Here is what I tried so far:
    deleting com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    deleting com.apple.iApps.plist
Moving file to a different location
    Renaming the file
clicking twice on the file to open
Transfered the file to another Mac (with event files)
Deleted iMovie and reinstalled from AppStore
    rebooted many times
None of this worked so far. The file is there, 13MB, but nothing seems to recognize the file into iMovie.
Mountain Lion latest version. iMovie 11 latest version.
Please help, a load of work was put into this and I need to finish the movie by Thursday.
    All help appreciate it.

There are a number of others here having the same problem (including me), where the project appears in Finder in the iMovie Projects folder but is not listed in the Project Library in iMovie. The project just seems to disappear from the Library.
Here is a link to a recent topic. It includes a post by me where I've provided links to other topics regarding this issue.

You've given an excellent summary of things you've tried. I've also tried most of those, but haven't as yet reinstalled iMovie. As I have Final Cut Pro X, I also attempted to open the project file in that app with no success. FCP X crashed just after loading, after I had selected from the menu - File > Import > iMovie Project.
You can submit feedback to Apple - from iMovie's Menu select iMovie > Provide iMovie Feedback.
Sorry I can't help you solve this.

  • IMovie project quality poor in iDVD export

I'm having problems with the quality of iMovie projects exported to iDVD. The final dvd looks very pixelated, however, when I export the same project to iTunes and view the video on same TV, the video looks perfect...clear as a bell, when great definition.
    Here's what I'm doing...
Video imported from my HD camera at Large 960x540,Optimize setting.
Clips moved from Events to Projects.
No major edits made in Projects outside of a trim or two.
    Project 'Finalized.'
Project sent to iDVD via Share > iDVD.
Am I missing something? I've even tried omitting step 4 above...not finalizing. Same DVD result. The video looks perfect on my screen in both iMovie and iDVD as I work on it. Only experiencing problem with final DVD output.
    I'm using iMovie 11 (v9.0.4), iDVD (v7.1.2).
This is the first time that I've used iMovie 11 to create my video before sending to iDVD. In the past, I've used iMovie HD and never had a problem with iDVD output.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi
There are lot's of thought's about this - read as much as You want of my notes.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
DO not use - "Share to iDVD" in any iMovie version !
iMä'08 to 11 - "Share to Media Browser" and as LARGE or Medium - NOT HD or other resolutions as this too degrades the final DVD.
    3. I use Apple Disk Util tool (or Roxio Toast™) to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
    • and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
    • and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
    • Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
    • Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
    • Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
    • Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
    • Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
    • No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc

    • Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
    • No File Vault on - Important
    • NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
    • Lot's of icons on DeaskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
    • Start a new User-Account and log into this and iMovie get's faster too - if a project is in a hurry
    • And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

  • Iphoto, imovie, iweb missing after mountain lion upgrade...

I have a mid 2010 iMac that I have kept up to date and recently upgraded to Mountian Lion.  Everything has been fine except that I noticed that iLife was missing right after the update...  And I didn't purchase it in the app store because it came with my iMac.  In fact, the iMac came with Snow Leopard on it I think. But I haven't the slightest idea where that disk is because we lost a few things that I haven't located yet in our move last year.  I have another copy of Snow Leopard that I goes to my 2009 MacBook that I already had.  It seems quite frustrating that the programs just disappeared and they've never done that before on any other upgrade!  I have no need to purchase and upgrade to iLife 11 as I only use iPhoto and iMovie for iPhone photos/video because I have everything else in LightRoom already.  But I would like iPhoto/iMovie back!  How do I go about doing this?  Can i use my backup to get it back somehow?  Just confused on how to tget it back and my searches yielded very little...  Thanks!

sorry...  i meant '09 version...  I just knew it wasn't '11 (assumed '09) because I haven't upgraded to the '11 versions.  I said iLife because I lost all 3-iphoto, iweb and imovie.  Well, I see that iweb isn't a part of '11 and is going away and i am just now seeing that.  And noticing that I lost GarageBand in addition (i just don't use it to notice it was also missing after the upgrade).
And again, they all came installed on my computer, not from me purchasing it via app store.  Technically I guess it wasn't a part of the OS, I just meant that it came with the imac and was part of my imac purchase.  I only remember having an install disk (not a seperate ilife disk) that came with my imac but i am unable to find any of it because of a move (and haven't located the disks that came with the 2010 iMac).  Again, I have the snow leopard os upgrade disk that I purchased (prior to buying my imac in 2010) that I bought to upgrade my 2009 MacBook Pro.  But again, it isn't the SL install disk that came with the 2010 iMac (which is the computer we are discussing here)  However, my 2009 MacBookPro was upgraded to ML right after I upgraded the iMac on the same exact dayand I DID NOT lose iphoto, iweb, imovie and garageband on that MacBook Pro.  And it was the 09' also because I had not upgraded either computer to '11 version.  So, the programs went missing on the imac upgrade only, and not the macbook-so there has to be a reason why...  I did not mean that iLife came with an OS Upgrade -only that it came with all purchased apple computers. sorry!
Sberman-I will try to load the iphoto link that you gave above and see if it restores the iphoto and my catalog, etc. Someone I know suggested that it's all still there - but i am just missing the iphoto programs (and other programs) for some reason and all should be restored once it's reloaded.

My Mac Mini takes forever to load programs now.  After loading Mavericks it seems like I am back in PC World again!!  My biggest concern is ALL of my iMovie projects seem to have vanished.  I do not have sound on some web sites like YouTube.  I lost the option to mirror from the Mac to the TV but I was able to solve that.  Any suggestions on recovery of files?  I do not use TimeMachine and did not back up anything before the Mavericks installation.  I know...that's bad.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Imported iMovie project missing elements in FCX

Okay so we can import iMovie projects, why are most of my transitions, all audio and theme pieces missing in the FCX project?

Strange. I thought FCP X was fully compatible with its younger sibling, iMovie. Maybe it can't read any file format properly. But I'm sure there's an update on the way in a year. Or two.

  • IPhoto 04 and iMovie 04 missing after tiger installation

hi guys, hope anybody can help me.
got my hands finally on mac os x tiger, so formated my hard disk and installed it. afterwards I tried to reinstall iLife 04 by using the recovery dvds for mac os x panther, which were delivered together with my powerbook 15", 1,33 Ghz.
installation went fine as I could see (chose the complete install) but after finishing it, iphoto and imovie are missing now. idvd and all other included stuff was installed completely. I tried to install it again but the installation programm tells me that there are no further packages to install left on the dvds.
if i search for iphoto or imovie with spotlight, it only finds some automator skrips but not the complete programmes. I also checked the dvds for the install packages to install it manually but couldn´t find anything.
so...any ideas how i can restore iphoto and imovie on my system? don´t wanna reinstall everything completely

Try using Pacifist to locate them on the restore disks and extract and install.

  • My iPhoto and iMovie go missing after upgrade to Mavericks. How do I get it back?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and my iPhoto and iMovie went missing.  How do i get it back. I do not want to pay for it.

First if you haven't done so already click on the Apple Logout > and make sure you don't have more than one user account...  If you don't log back in and see if your files came back.  Try this:
press command + space keys > Search for terminal then hit enter.
from command line > type: cd ~/Documents (or Desktop or Pictures just depends where you had your files)
then type: ls -a (this will list all files even hidden ones let me know if you see your files or not)
*Note: Be sure to read the instructions carefuly and ask questions if you don't understand something.

  • New project missing after closing iMovie

    Here's the steps I took:
    Created a new project
Shared that project to Vimeo no problem
    Created a different new project
Tried to share to Vimeo but it kept saying the file was too large, so transfer failed (this project was about the same size as the previous one I uploaded to Vimeo)
    I closed iMovie
When I opened it again, the project I had tried to transfer to Vimeo was now missing
I recreated the project, tried to upload to Vimeo, same problem - failed to upload
I shut down iMovie, restarted and again my project is missing!
But, what's strange is if I try and create a new project with the same name as the missing one, it tells me a project with that name already exists, and I have to choose a different name.
I'm so confused! And very annoyed that I may have to create this project a third time.
    Any help?!

I have this problem too! Not quite the same, as I wasn't trying to export to vimeo, but it's otherwise the same: I create a new project, and then I close imovie. When I open imovie the next time, the project doesn't show up. When I go to "all projects" it says there are 14, but counting them there are only 13 shown!
I discovered a TEMPORARY fix, and I mean temporary because it's annoying and doesn't fix it permanently:
    1. Create a second imovie library from the file menu (it doesn't have to have anything in it)
    2. Right click your first library and "close" that library (it won't let you do this if it's the only one, hence step one)
    3. Close imovie
    4. find your original library in the "movies" folder and double click to open it.
iMoive will then open up and your projects will be shown under their respective events. HOWEVER, if you close imovie and open it again, they are gone again!

  • All iMovie '11 projects missing after upgrade to OS X 10.6.6

I just upgraded to OS X 10.6.6, but all of my projects and previously imported movies are gone. iMovie does not appear to be acting properly and it will not import any video. I used it last week before 10.6.6 to make a video and it was working fine.
It snowed this morning and I was going to edit and send out video of my son playing in his first snow of the season.

    Solution!
Go to Users > your account > Library > Preferences
    Find this file:
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move it out of the Preferences folder.
Launch iMovie. It should rebuild the Events Library, iPhoto thumbnails, etcs. And your Projects will return.
    It worked for me.
    Hope it helps!

  • How do I save an imovie project that I can't export from a 4th gen ipod touch?

My daughter created a movie in imovie.  We can't get it to export.  It says that there isn't enough space left.  I have deleted everything off the touch except for imovie.  When I started there were 1.2 gb free.  For some reason it went down to 110 mb free.  I have it back up to 956 mb free.  I have no idea what is taking up all the space.  Did it partially save another copy of the movie?  I just want to save her movie for her, she's 10 and is extremely upset.  The movie is almost 45 minutes long.  I thought maybe I could cut in half and export it as 2 movies?  I have no clue what I am doing.  If you can either help me export the movie OR free up space on the ipod I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

Connect the iPod to your computer and launch iTunes. It will show up under Devices on the left part of the screen.
Click on it in devices and a serries of tabs will appear in the next window. Under the Summary tab you can backup the device to your computer. The other tabs allow you to sync to or from the iPod to the computer or computer to iPod.
Your goal is to remove apps and data from the iPod until you have enough room on it to finish and export the movie. Once you've shared it to iTunes you can remove it from the device to free up space and restore your data from the backup.

  • IMovie 10.0.2 crashes while exporting

I've read that it helps to delete the Library in order to get it running again.
Could anybody let me know where I can finde the Library (I don't want to delete the wrong one) and let me know whether it will rebuild properly?
    Cheers
    Zuse

figured out part of it-- the part where it's using no resources and not making progress on the exports: sometimes when i quit out of iMovie and it has to cancel background processes, there's a process that doesn't die like it should. in ps it starts like this:
    /Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/PlugIns/Compressor/CompressorKit.bundle/Conten ts/Frameworks/Compressor.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/StompUtil.framework/Res ources/ProTranscoderTool_sb
if i kill that process, then when i start iMovie up again it uses more CPU (10-20%) and does the exports like it should.
it doesn't seem to be thrashing the disk; pity i can't get it to utilize more of the CPU...

  • Project missing after laptop shuts down unexpectedly FCPX 10.1.1

    Hi guys!
Really hope someone can help me with this. Not gonna bore you with the heart ache of how much I put into this project because I am sure everyone will hate this situation and know I how I feel.
So here is what happen. I have the latest version of final cut. All the files is on an external hard drive. Was editing this project and didn't realise that the battery was about to run out. The laptop turn off mid edit. So I put everything in my bag to go home to charge it. When I got in to reopen the project there is literally nothing there. All my footage and everything is there. But not one project. Zero. Just the events.
Anyone know why? And how to fix this? Or can it not be fixed!
    Help in short!
    Thanks a lot in advance

You must know that in the current version the projects are inside the events. Take a good look to see if it really is not there.
Just in case it isn't, then try loading a backup of the library. FCP X backs up your libraries about every 15 minutes. Backups by default are stored in ~/Movies/Final Cut Pro Backups. Look in there for a folder with the name of your library and try loading the most recent backup.
