Imovie 10' won't edit

I have been working on a school project that is about 20 minutes long, but just recently imovie stopped allowing me to edit the project. When ever i bring the cursor over the project to edit a rainbow circle thing appears and never leaves, forcing me to force quit imovie. If i open a previous project it will allow me to edit, but when i open my current project imovie seems to stall. Is there anything i can do to stop this?

Hi Tom
Not much new - but I made a list on howto speed up iDVD slightly - if You got time to cheque it off
May be You might like to correct or add something to it. If You've got time for it.
*To speed up DVD*
AND TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk - if less than 5Gb slow and unstable - less than 1Gb might even not start.
• Choise of encoding method will give very different productions speeds. On my d-G5 2GHz
*Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - BEST
Takes about 2 x times the other ones - but if quality is of essence
(Quality might be as good as or even better for movies under 60 minutes - by using Best Performances BUT not for movies up to 120 minutes)
2 hour movie + menu = about 4 hours to encode at it’s best on my system
*Best Performances (movies + menus less than 60 min.)* - High quality on final DVD
1 hour including menu = about 1 hour to encode
*High Quality* (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - slightly lower quality than above
2 hours including menu = about 2 hour to encode
• Use an as simple DVD-menu possibly without any animation at all. This reduces processing speed dramatically. I use ”Old Theme - and Brushed Metal” and animation turned off.
• An as fast Mac and as many cores/CPUs possibly. My PowerMac G5 has two CPUs and iDVD uses about 120% = use more than only one CPU/Core. How many it can address I don’t know (anyone ? )
• If possibly - Use two internally e-Sata drives - Drive access takes a great deal of time
else FW-800 or FW-400 or USB2 or network storage (slowest and near to useless)
to work on one (internal, boot, Mac OS, Start-up hard disk - will be BAD - and slow
Normally my d-G5 2GHz takes about 2 x movie material when iDVD and Mac OS on one internal HD and material is on the other internal one.
Now with material on an external USB2-drive and an external Lacie FW-400 as Start-up drive material of about 1.5h will need about 4-6 hours to get encoded and burned to DVD.
Choise and use of hard disks is essential.
• I guess that a Solid State Disks might improve speed
• No other programs running in BackGround eg EnergySaver, Internet, AirPort, Bluetooth etc.
• Don’t let HD spinn down or be turned off (in EnergySave)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screensaver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show
• If Mac with only place for one internal hard disk. Then I would try tu use an external FW (Mac OS Extended) one as Start-Up hard disk and store material on the internal one.
eg iMac or ProBook or alike.

• I assume that resolution and codec of source is another factor ... scaling (e.g. 1280x720 to 720x576 = that is an 'un-even' calculation). or, a difference in speed reg. to h264, dv-stream or aic as input ....

• IPhone 4 - iMovies - won't edit videos from other albums

So I have the iPhone 4 and I have iMovie it. Well I've made some videos on it and it worked perfectly.... Until today. Today I was going to make a tribute video for my uncle who had died. I was going to incorporate pictures and videos I had of him. Well the videos were on my computer so I synced my phone and 2 videos on my phone. When I went to iMovies to start my editing and the videos never showed up. They are in the right format (mp4) so I don't know why it didn't work. So I tried trimming some parts and sending them to my camera roll and even that didn't work. Can anybody tell me what I can do to get this to work? Or can iMovies only work on videos you recorded with your phone?

Just a quick update on my issue... which seems different than most. To summarize, I tried updating from iTunes 10.6 directedly via USB. Got an empty progress bar when it "rebooted" after "successfully updating" to 5.1 with a memory allocation bar on itunes showing most the memory as allocated to "other", instead of the usual memory allocation to apps, music, pcits, etc. Rebooted the phone, but still came up with an empty progress bar, but would connect to itunes.. showing booted as 5.1, but again the memory was still allocated to "other". Started recovery process on itunes to try to bring back my old config, after which the iphone fully booted (into 5.1), but was completely.... recovered and re-installed all my apps, music, etc without a hitch and rebooted successfully, this time the memory allocation was correctly labeled, but somewhere I gained 2.0 GB of memory, even with all the same apps and music installed. I had to do some minor additional configurations (password lock had to be re-enabled), but otherwise, everything was working. A bunch of apps lost their stored settings... which I though strange as I expected the "backups" to store those settings as well. Otherwise, running 5.1 now without issues... seems much snappier than 5.0.1... but the process was nerve racking to say the least.
Best of luck with other "explorers" tyring to make the whole process work.

• IMovie'11 won't import mp4 movies

I have some large mp4 files that I'm trying to import into iMovie so I can edit them into shorter clips.
When I select "open with", iMovie is greyed out.
I can open the movie with QuickTime, and select export to iMovie, and the file appears in the iMovie dropbox on my computer, but iMovie still won't open it, or even recognise that the movie is there.
When I try "import" in iMovie and select the file, it takes about 10 hours importing, and then nothing happens, no error message, nothing, I just see iMovie open, and unchanged.
I am using iMovie'11 version 9.0.7 amd Mac OSx 10.8
Thanks!

I have a wedding that I'm trying to finish and deliver and now I can't because that file version won't open. I keep getting an error message and the iMovie app closes. Last night I saw the file and tried to open it but no luck. Error message came up again. I reboot and turned off my laptop for the evening and tried again just now but nothing!! I need that video. My job depends on it! I worked so hard on this wedding video and now it's lost and won't open. I work another job and don't have much time. I really don't want to start all over again. I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

• I can't get Imovie to import video edited with quicktime...any suggestions

I use imovie often. I edited some video with quicktime (basically just shortening clips). Imovie will not import the files. Any help with this would be really appreciated since there's a heap of it.
Thanks
Windsor

You may have exported from QuickTime in a format not recognized by iMovie. Try converting them using the free app MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 - available here: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
In MPEG Streamclip, convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) or H.264 format. Both should import to iMovie '11 with no trouble. In iMovie's menu select File>Import>Movies.

• Imovie '11 won't let me share a specific project it says "quit imovie and reopen" how do i fix this and share the project?

imovie '11 won't let me share a specific project that is no different from all the other projects. Every time I try to share or export the project it says "quit imovie and reopen" this can't be a memory problem because I have a lot of memory left and it allows me to export other projects but just not this one. How do i fix this and share the project ASAP?

Check the connection settings.
*Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection > Settings
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy" if the default "Use the system proxy settings" setting doesn't work.
See "Firefox connection settings":

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

• IMovie 08 won't open

I have a Canon HG10 High Definition camera using AVCHD.
I've installed leopard (10.5.1)
I've installed Final Cut Express 4 (store clerk told me it would work and box says it is compatable with AVCHD but didn't recognize files).
I've installed new version of iLife '08 so that I can get iMovie '08 to be able to capture the file off my camera.
iMovie '08 won't open. Says that it quick unexpectedly do I want to relaunch. I say yes. Won't open. I re-install iLife '08 (which I really don't want in the first place just want to get a file off my camera), try to open iMovie '08, won't open wants to know if I want to relaunch.
Does anyone have any ideas?

WOW! Thank you so much! I spent hours last night with Apple Tech Support, got nowhere, and was ready to phone back today with an escalated case number and the overhanging cloud of needing to erase and install Leopard - also spent hours web surfing "imovie 08 won't load" until I found this thread.
It worked (and I didn't even have do the "BEFORE first launch (or at least before first successful launch - kept getting menu bar but nothing else). What a strange fix - never would have figured it out in a million years.

• IMovie and MPEG-4 editing - like molasses?

I have a home movie DVD from my uncle which was converted from an old VHS video.
I ripped it to MPEG-4 format using Handbrake (it's about 12 minutes long and the MPEG-4 file is about 150MB. I used the XviD codec to do this because it was quicker than the H.264 encoding) and was going to edit it in iMovie to see what could be done. (I had downloaded the XviD codec for playback, but don't know if this is what is being used by Handbrake.) For example, the colours are faded and have a decidedly green tinge to them. However, doing anything with the file is as slow as molasses. It has taken a long time to apply some colour correction to a 20 second clip (enough time for me to browse these forums and compose this post and then some). Even scrubbing through the movie barely worked. Is this normal? Is the fact that I used the XviD codec coming back to haunt me?
Alternatively, would it be better if I just converted it to DV somehow and then worked on it like that? Should I just import my MPEG-4 rip into a DV iMovie project to do the conversion?
(NB I haven't got Quicktime Pro or the MPEG-2 component so haven't been up to whatever multi-step procedures are necessary to extract DVD content yet - is it easier than I imagine? Using freely available software?)

the mp2 compressor inside a DVD is a delivery format, not meant for further processing as editing...
a conversion from VHS directly to iM's native, internal format "dv" would be much better...
a conversion from one lossy format as mp2 to another (as Handbrake's mp4 or Divx or whatever) makes another conversion neccessairy => loss of pic quality...
to import/convert DVDs, you have the following options:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/import dvd, hit apple-k
* connect your Camera to a DVD-player and copy to tape/use as converter

• IMovie Freezing Up When editing Project

I am currently having trouble with iMovie freezing up when editing a movie project. My iMovie HD project is on an external firewire hard-drive (fantom drives 120 GB). Files (.dv) were able to be imported from camera fine, using the external hard-drive, but when working on the project it tends to lock up (spinning beach ball) very often. The only way I can stop iMovie is by holding down the power button and shut the entire machine down. Force quit will not work?
Any help is much appreciated!

A similar problem occured to me, after iMovie 08 initially worked like a charm. When I finally ran out of patience with the endless "force quit - restart" procedure, I called Applecare who suggested the following:
1. Move all com.apple.iMovie.plist files which are located in home/library/preferences to the trash. (You may have several files stemming from previous versions of iMovie)
2. Restart your Mac
3. Open iMovie08. You should now get the same welcome screen as when opening iMovie for the first time and all preferences are set back to factory settings, but all your projects, events etc are still there.
I was told that the preferences I set in previous versions of iMovie were still in the Library/Preferences folder and interfered with the settings for iMovie08, which caused the crashes
I hope this works for you

• Imovie won't edit or play project

Hi,
I'm pretty new to Macs, but I am really struggling with this, and can't find any solution that seems to work.
Basically, I've been editing a project in Imovie for a few weeks. Yesterday, I was editing and closed without issue, in the exact same way I had done for the last few weeks.
Today, I can open Imovie, but my project won't open, nor will it play, either in the preview window or full view. In fact, it won't even allow me to open the project and see all thumbs.
I've googled it, and the only suggestions I can find suggest I delete the preferences file or delete and reinstall imovie, both of which I have done, neither of which work.
Does anyone have a working solution, as I am starting to get worried I will lost all I had done up until now.
Thanks,
James

Hi James,
The problem you are seeing appears similar to what others here are reporting (including me). However, in our case the project appears in Finder but is not listed in iMovie's Project Library.
From your description, it sound like you can see the project in the Project Library, but it simply won't open. Is this correct? If so, it's slightly different to what we are seeing (or not seeing)!
See my latest post on this issue here (where I've provided links to 7 other topics on this):

Sorry I can't provide any advice as to a remedy for this very frustrating issue. Please provide feedback to Apple, as I've described in the above link.

• IMovie won't edit my clip

Hi. I'm using Mac OS 10.4.8, and iMovie HD 5..0.2. I have a clip in my movie which is approximately 872MB long. I have been trying to edit it down to just a few seconds long, so I can use it in a Gee Three Slick 6 transition...Vid Motion. I want to superimpose it over a different clip. I edit the clip to just a few seconds long and when I try to use it in the Gee Three transition, the clip is still in its entire pre-edited 872MB length, even though the correctly edited version is in my clip viewer. And when I try to drag this correctly edited clip onto my desktop, somehow all 872MB gets dragged, and I find the clip is the original unedited length. Even it's information shows it's 872MB long. Any ideas on how I can fix this would be greatly apprreciated
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) iMovie HD 5.0.2

... after editing the clip, I would select it in timeline, choose export/Quicktime/FullQuality (no loss of quality...) and 'selected clips only' and export that edited scene.. now, you have a single-solid file, you could re-import or use with that plug-in ..

• IMovie 9 - Video is edited, shows the project clips, but won't play at all? Please Help

So i've finished all the editing on my project, But now it won't play. The clips show on the project reel (left side) but doesn't show the video in the viewer on the right side. Space bar just sent the red tracking bar back to the beginning but won't play. Hitting the play button makes nothing happen, and playing full screen doesn't play the video either.

• Imovie project won't let me edit it

I created a movie using still photos in IMovie 09. I have opened, edited and closed it several times over the past few days. However, today I can not open the movie. It shows in my project library but I can not edit it. I click the "edit project" and nothing happens. I looked at the information on the movie file and the extension is rcproject. Does that have something to do with it?
I tried saving it to a flash drive and then importing it into IMovie. Nothing happens.

Deleting iMovie's Preference file may help, as this file can become corrupted at times. The file can be found in your user Library>Preferences folder and is named com.apple.iMovie8.plist
After deleting the plist file, when iMovie is next opened it will create a new plist file with the default settings. In iMovie, go to the Menu item iMovie>Preferences and change each item as required to suit your own preferences. In addition, check under File>Project Properties and amend the General and Timing settings if appropriate.
If you are not comfortable deleting the plist file, just drag it to the Desktop until you are satisfied that all is working as before once the new file is created, then delete (trash) it.
Another thing to try is to Repair Permissions using Disk Utility. Please post back if you are unsure how to do this.
By the way - welcome to the Forum!
