IMovie 11  adjusting photo duration - won't change, various times showing!

H E L P!!!! I have just installed Imovie 11. I am in the finishing stages of a project which HAS TO BE COMPLETED in the next 2 days. I am having grief adjusting the duration for my still photos. I click on the COG - Clip adjustments - change the timing to 08:00 and tick the APPLIES TO ALL STILLS box. The clip won't change and some of them show 12s, some 10s ect. HOW DO I CHANGE THIS?? WHY IS IT SUCH A DRAMA??? I WANT MY STILLS to show for eight seconds only. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME???? THANK YOU

Many people have posted on this issue, including myself. I've spent a lot of hours on problem, and have come up with a solution that allows me to vary both the image duration and the transition duration in my movies.
Here's my process that I have posted before and that I still use:
-> Knowing that (a) I want most of the photos to be visible for 5 seconds and most transitions for 2 seconds and (b) that a transition takes half from the photo before and half from the photo after, under File>Project Properties>Photo Duration I chose 7 seconds - each photo will 'lose' a total of 2 seconds from the transitions in front and behind. I did not check either "Applies to all transitions." or "Applies to all photos." - See below for why.
-> I discovered that all the photos have to go in before I add any transitions. This was new to me. With all previous versions of iMovie I simply added a photo then a transition then another photo one at a time. I had to fiddle with the timing adjustments, but at least I could fiddle. With this new version of iMovie I can't. Once the transition is in place, I cannot change the duration of the photo.
-> Sometimes, I want a longer or shorter duration for a photo. For example, on photos to which I apply the Ken Burns effect, I often want the image on the screen for a slightly longer time. In this case, I have to use the inspector to change the duration before I add the transitions. So I might set the time for 8 seconds; when a two second transition is added before and after, the time for this photo becomes 6 seconds, which is what I want.
-> The same applies if I want a transition to be shorter or longer than 2 seconds. If, for example, I want the duration for a transition to be 1 second, then I have to change the duration on the two linked photos to 5 1/2 seconds.
Right now, I working with batches of 5 or 6 photos at a time. I don't put a transition on the last photo in the batch until I have added the next group of photos. And things get really tricky if I don't like my original design. If I want to change anything, I have to take out all of the transitions linking the photos I want to work on, do the math, make the changes in the photo durations, then put the transitions back.
All of this requires much more prior planning than I am used to with iMovie. I hope it helps those of you who are struggling with this problem.

  • When I adjust the duration of a clip or transaction, iMovie automatically adjusts the duration of another clip; how can I shut this feature off?

In iMovie when I adjust the duration of a photo clip or transaction, iMovie automatically changes the duration of another clip; how can I shut this feature off?

Ok, well you won't get a "speed scale" indicator when editing a title clip. You can only adjust duration. Now, is there music attached to the title clip? Are you adjusting the TITLE TEXT box ONLY? Try adjusting the clip BELOW Title Text box 1st, then Title Text clip.  Is the Title attached to your own video OR is it one of iMovie's default Titles??

  • Photo date won't change to what I enter

I've been going through the tedious process of changing dates on photos I've imported (thanks, Apple, for taking away the editable date field that made this a snap in iPhoto '09). Mostly it's working fine. Except for one photo--every time I try to change the date, iPhoto sets it to a completely different date, always earlier than what I want. So now I'm in the year 1398. It does this whether or not I have the "adjust original file" checked. What's really bizarre is that if I change the date by a couple of years, it works, but if I try to jump more than 10 or 20 years, it jumps back in time.
    Am I crazy???

I can't even get iPhoto 11 to let me change the date! Apparently when I "upgraded" to 11 from 09, it not only lost photos and photo books (don't get me started on that), but it also assigned arbitrary dates to a LOT of photos that I had scanned in. And when I try clicking on the date to change it, it won't allow it. GRRRRRR!!!!!
So please, if you know how to change the date, please, please share it with me......thanks!

  • IMovie for iPad Photo Duration

Ok, this is driving me mad. I recently downloaded iMovie for iPad and am attempting to create a video consisting of photos and music. Each photo comes in with a duration of 4s and I would like to make each longer to, say, 6-8s. How? I don't want to spend countless hours clicking 75 photos and dragging them to near the desired length. Surely there's a way; if not, make one because this is a no brainer.

    Hi all
Found a really cool app called simpltransfer which allows you to transfer photos and video between iDevices!!
The app has a lite version (which allows you to transfer from within your 1st 50 files listed in your device's camera roll or photo library) for free download.
S now I can edit away on my iPad ... Soon to be uploaded to YouTube n Facebook for all my friends viewing pleasure!! LOL
More apps should have lite versions as trials!!! Too often I've paid the $1 or $2 only to be disappointed that the app does not live up to its claims ... Like 100 cameras in 1 for iPad.
Anyway .. Thanks for all the help!!

  • Epson Photo r200 - won't add, doesn't show up after software install

I can't get an Epson R200 photo printer to work with the IMAC running OSX10
I have used the included cd to install the drivers, as described in the manual.
I have downloaded new drivers from EPSON.com and installed them.
I have downloaded all OS updates.
I have contacted EPSON and perfromed their run around (of telling me to delete the files, download new ones, and reinstall it).
After I install it, the pritner does not show up. So i go to the printer thing and click "Add". When I do this nothign comes up. It should come up with a dialogue box of sorts if I'm not mistaken?
If I search my way through the files to the Epson utility it installed, I can see the ink levels in the printer, and perform cleaning functions from it. I thought it was wierd that would see it, but the OS wouldn't.
    Any ideas?

Hi, I use two epson printers on my IMac and they installed with not problems. I know you have tried this but the only thing that comes to my feeble mind is that when you go to the Printer Setup Utility and click on "add" a windo comes up that allows one to select the type of connection you are using for the printer. In my case it is EPSON USB there are other options and maybe it is not selected to match whatever connection you are using with your printer. Good luck, rj

  • Can't adjust clip duration of still photos in iMovie '11

Anyone having the same problem? I inserted a still photo in one of my projects in iMovie which has a a clip duration of 5s when added. I clicked the cogwheel icon then chose the inspector to adjust the duration. I've managed to changed it to 3s but after I clicked "Done", the clip duration is still under 5s.
I didn't encountered this problem before in iMovie '10 and I've searched over at Google and found out that many iMovie '11 users have the same dilemma.
Any workaround you can suggest? Thanks!

"problems setting duration for still photos and transitions in iMovie '11"
A number of people have experienced the same problem and written about it on discussions. Lots of difference solutions as well. If you search using the title quoted above, you can read the solution I found. It's more complicated than it should be. I've never had to fiddle as much with duration times for transitions and still photos. Nevertheless, the steps I have described work for me. You will also find the steps another reader offered that may work for you if all of your transitions are set for the same durations and all of the still photos are as well.

  • Adjusting the duration of a photo(s) in iMovie

iMovie help says I can adjust the duration of a photo by double-clicking it and changing the number of seconds to display the photo. I do that, as well as click on "Applies to all stills." When I click <Done>, however, the duration doesn't change for any of my photos. If, however, I drag another photo in, ITS duration has the new setting.

The format for time is hh:mm:ss:tenths
Or you can go to iMovie/Preference and select "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames" to get more control. (There are 30 frames per second.)
When you type a 4, then depending on the setting above, it thinks you mean 4/10 of a second or 4 frames.
If you want 4 seconds, type 4:00.
For 4 minutes, type 4:00:00, etc.

  • On iMovie 10.0.7 how can I change the duration of all of my photos in the project at once?

On iMovie 10.0.7 how can I change the duration of all of my photos in the project at once?

You can set the default duration of stills but you have to do it before you start the project.
iMovie is not really suitable for stop motion videos and iMovie 10 is worse than iMovie 9 because the minimum still duration is not really controllable as you have found.   I don't have experience of making such videos but there are 3rd party apps which appear more suited to this, for example http://www.macworld.com/article/1146623/stop_motion_Mac.html
mentions some of them, though its a bit old and you may be able to find more up to date information.

Have you tried turning off automatic transitions ? Choose file - project properties and follow the dialogue box to change duration with a slider.  iMovie also doesn't allow a transition to be more than 50% duration of the clip its attached to. In other words if the clip is 4 seconds the transition cannot be more than 2 seconds and remember that relates to the first clip as the following clip (right side) is pulled back to overlay it.
Does this help.  Perhaps you already know this ?

  • I keep on adjusting the duration of the IMOVIE clips , and after I have hit DONE and check the clip, it reverts to the original number and not the new duration requested. Any suggestions???

I keep on adjusting the duration of the IMOVIE clips, hit Done , and when I go check the clip, it reverts to the original duration. Any suggestions??

Error -69 suggests a possible problem with the source files on your computer. Check the source disk for errors and backup if you don't already do so. See HT1210: iTunes displays a -69 error when syncing iPod for more details.
The SyncToy backup program is also a good way to identify exactly which files cannot be read. Repeated runs may succed in copying files which won't copy over on the first attempt.
    See also Corrupt iPod classic.
It may also help to disable any AV software while syncing or set exclusions on the media folder and the iPod's drive.

  • Imovie resetting photo duration after restart

ok, so I have several movie projects in imovie 08 without big issues, however, this time instead of using videos I used photos to create a video slideshow. I set the duration for the photos by clicking on the little "clock" button on the bottom of the picture and then checking the "apply for all photos", which did nothing to set the duration for every picture. I ended up setting the duration for the pictures on each one manually but when I reopen the program to work on the project later on it has already reset the duration of the pictures to random times. I also tried adjusting the duration by using the "project properties", but here is the same problem, it seems to reset itself to whatever it feels like...any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

yes please...have exactly the same question...anyone?

  • IMovie clip adjustment duration

I made a movie set perfect to song- then friend resent some blurry photo via scan at a higher dpi.  I dropped in move and now the clip adjustment duration has a mind of it own and I am unable to adjust the duration  music doesn't match now. Help!

Thanks for your help. I thought transitions may have had something to do with the problem. Makes no sense to be able to insert transitions between clips if the transition is causing problems. I looked everywhere I could think of in the "help" areas of iMovie but of course found no answers.
    Thanks again.

  • Photo duration in IMovie '08

I am doing a project that requires photo duration of longer than 60 seconds in some of the "photos". (Actually, Powerpoint slides converted to png.) I am doing narration and loops in GB with some of the regions longer than 60 secs., exporting to ITunes and then to IMovie. My audio is longer than my video. Is there are method of extending beyond 60 secs.?
    Thank you.

    Karstens,
Got correct file and moved to trash. It was in my Home/library. You were right as IMovie durations are now unfrozen. Also, I upgraded from ILife '08 to '09 as it allows me to set slide durations up to 10 minutes. Duplicating and multiple copies of a slide were not realistic for me, as some may be several minutes long.
Thank you again for your help.

Please check Help >> System Info to find your catalog's location. Close Organizer. Go to this location and within the catalog folder, rename the thumbs.5.cache file to say thumbs.5.cache.old.
Now relaunch Organizer and let the thumbnailing complete. You should get your thumbnails back in no time.
