IMovie '11 and Hollywood Dazzle DV Bridge

I cannot get iMovie 9 to work with the Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge.
Any advice?

The cameras I have, have RCA output connecters red for power, white audio, yellow for video---my question is---is there RCA to FireWire adaptor so I can attatch a camera to my iMac G4 to us it as a "webcam" ?
I had the system working once but the Hollywood Dazzle DV is now not working.

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

  • IChat w/ Dazzle DV Bridge

Hello, I am trying to use a Hollywood Dazzle DV Bridge to transmit analog sources such as tv, dvd, & vcr etc... It works fine, and I have to figure out the 6 minutes time out problem.
The one item I am having problems with is that the video image is inverted left to right, sort of like when you use a lcd projector and have to switch from a rear projection to a front projection.
    Anyone come across this?
The video part of the picture is not noticeable. But when text or lower third graphics show , they are viewed right to left instead of the normal left to right.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Dennis,
I have a Dazzle DV bridge as well.
It works fine. I do not have any time out problems that are not related to my camera. (the anti (tape) stretch feature normally kicks in befor e six mins on my camera).
My Camera is set to Camera mode which will out put a TV signal for dipalying on a Tele or for Recording direct to a VCR. The Dazzle then converts it to DV and sends it to the computer over firewire. (the OS recognises it without further software).
Pics and info for those who do not know what we are talking about http://www.computervice.com/Products/Dazzle/DV_Bridge/
iChat is the thing that is turning the Pic to Mirror view.
This is a "feature" that Apple has put inot iChat.
You soon get used to looking at yourself like it was a mirror. Your Buddies see you the right way round.
For iSight users there is http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iglasses/ which will allow you to switch the pic around. It does not work with the Dazzle though (Nor does iChatUSBCam other functions other than allowing the Desktop to be used as a Video source)

  • Making Final Cut Pro 4 recognize Hollywood Dazzle on Firewire

I just got FCP4 and can't seem to figure out how to make the program recognize my Hollywood Dazzle box hooked into the FireWire port. What are the Audio/Video settings to use that will make FCP4 see my Dazzle so that I can import VHS through it and convert it into digital into FCP4?
It is a Dazzle Hollywood DV - Bridge
    Thanks

"So FCP4 is sooo professional, yet can't even import simple Bridge video that iMovie routinely does without any problem at all?"
If you are using such a professional application, why not get the professional gear that is designed to work with it?
The Dazzle is a consumer product...iMovie is a consumer product. Match.
DVCAM Deck like the DSR-11 (lowest end model) is a professional deck...FCP is a professional edit system. Match.
Using Dazzle with FCP is like...like...using tires you bought from the local Firestone dealer for your NASCAR. The might work, but for what the car is designed for. Try to do any serious driving and you will hit the wall.
And importing with iMovie for use in FCP is a BAD idea:
#20 Using iMovie to Capture for FCP edit
    Shane's Stock Answer #20:
iMovie handles the media differently from FCP, specifically where audio is concerned. So it is not a recommended workflow. Here's why...
iMovie captures using DV Stream (.dv) standard which does not use timecode. That is a big disadvantage over the way that FCP captures in that you can't go back and recapture the material at a later date if you need to revisit a project.
The DV/NTSC specification (the one FCP uses) also calls for seperate tracks for audio and video, even if you capture it as one clip. iMovie' DV stream format is muxed audio and video, which means that they are tied together (I can't get into specifics because I ain't no engineer or programmer). FCP is a bit more demanding and captures the seperate audio/video tracks, either in a single media file or as seperate video and audio files. With FCP you could capture video only or audio only because each is defined by the DV specs. while with iMovie you can't.
Also, if you drop the iMovie footage into the timeline, your will get the RED render bar forcing you to render the footage in order to see it...
If you are going to start working with professional edit sytems, it is time to start thinking about getting professional, or semi-pro (prosumer) equipment that will work with it.

  • How do I clean-up iPhoto library in iMovie '08 and make my new ones appear?

I'm a graphic designer and I use Adobe Bridge to add metadata (keywords) to my pictures so they're searchable on the Internet - not just iPhoto (and iLife?) and after transferring all the image files from iPhoto onto my Time Capsule (external hard-drive) and deleting the Photo Albums from iPhoto, I created a new Album to import still frames/images to use in my new iMovie project. I cleaned out (emptied) my iPhoto trash to help free-up space on my hard-drive, too.
The problem I'm having is that my iPhoto library as viewed from iMovie - still shows all the old photo albums that I've already deleted and the new .PNG I imported doesn't appear; however, the old .JPG files I once had still appear with exclamation marks as the thumbnail images and I can't select or delete them. When I right-click on the iPhoto photo albums library within iMovie, I only get the option to open in iPhoto. I imagine there is some back door manipulation required to fix this. The iMovie and iPhoto software came pre-installed in my computer and I'm not so sure that re-formatting my computer with the start-up disc is the safe or correct answer.
I've been researching the iMovie forum to see if there is a file I should be able to access to fix a Cache file somewhere; however, I couldn't find any .xml files, cache files, or anything anywhere yet. Thanks in advance to anyone willing and able to share some knowledge. I look forward to resolving this troubling experience. My final goal is to use the .PNG file (which contains transparent data, unlike .JPG files which fill transparent data with white pixels) as a frame image if not as a floating graphic (i.e. picture-in-picture).

Sean in the iMovie technical support area (thanks to my lovely Apple Care plan purchase) answered my question about how to delete the iPhoto library, which I no longer use (because I use Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS3 to browse my photos and update their Metadata to make the images searchable not only on my computer, but others who don't have iPhoto, or iLife as well; even PC users and Internet search engines - when the images are uploaded as-is - without compression and changes that occur when uploaded to image hosts such as Photobucket.com, etc.):
Go to: *Finder >* (click on) *Pictures >* (and on the right, see iPhoto Library, Aperture, etc.? Select those files and...) *Move to Trash*
Now when you look at the Photos Browser in iMovie (⌘2) the folder, files, blank thumbnails and junk are (thankfully) gone!
As for using images located elsewhere for use in iMovie - I just have to locate them via the Finder, then select the file, then drag-and-drop the image for immediate placement into the part of My Project where I want to use the image and repeat this method for each incidence I want the graphic to appear.
Unfortunately, I must upgrade to iMovie '09 if I want to be able to take advantage of the Picture-in-Picture feature, which would enable me to place a logo or image graphic in a video project while other parts of the production are playing, but I can still use the title feature to embed text information such as a business name and phone number or (website) URL pertaining to the project as a surrogate stamp, watermark, or creative signature, but no other graphic image files may be used here.

  • IMovie 4 to iMovie HD and back again

I have read countless threads on issues related to choppy video in iMovieHD, but I haven't yet discovered a solution to my situation. I'm also dizzy with all the options, iMovie 4 vs iMovie HD, QT 7 vs QT 6.5.2, QT Cache Size, etc...
In years past, I have used iMovie 4 successfully on a number of big projects. These movies were usually from 60 to 90 minutes, with tons of video clips, audio clips, stills, transitions and effects. I never had a problem. This is work repeating. I never had a problem.
Then enter stage iMovie HD, and Quicktime 7. Neither seemed to have new features that I needed, but I figured, what the heck, maybe it improves performance. This is where my nightmare begins. I honestly do not know which software it the culprit, but I was in the middle of one of the most important video projects yet (and one of the biggest). Perhaps I deserve my fate since I didn't save the iMovie 4 project file, but I'm hoping some of you will be forgiving. Yes, I converted my iMovie 4 project to iMovie HD, and did not save the old project file. I didn't notice (or don't remember noticing) at first, so maybe the problem didn't start until I upgraded to QT 7. But at some point in time, I noticed a big problem in my project. I would start playing the movie to see how things were coming together, and my video would just freeze at arbitrary points (after a minute or so of playing okay). It starts getting choppy first, then the frame just freezes. The playhead continues to movie, and choppy audio is heard, but the video just seems to die.
I wiped the drive, and reinstalled iLife 04. I'm running OS X 10.3.9, and software update updated me to Quicktime 7 again. So I have a number of questions, all hopefully leading to resolution of this issue. I've lost weeks of time on this project, and I need to get it back on track.
    1. I have the iMovie HD project, but I want to work on it in iMovie 4 instead (had better luck with iMovie 4). Is there any way to mod the iMovie HD project file, or any utility, so that I can open it with iMovie 4 (and have all my clips and transitions, etc., restored)?
    2. Was downgrading from iMovie HD to iMovie 4 the wrong solution completely? Is the culprit really Quicktime 7?
    3. Does the latest Quicktime resolve this issue? I'm trying to decide whether I should upgrade to iMovie HD again. I really don't know what to do at this point. There's so much at stake, but lately my productivity has been zero, so something has to happen.
I guess I'm looking for a direction to go, and I currently feel very lost. Reading the past threads made me dizzy. I just want things to be the way they were: working. Can someone push me in the right direction?

Now I know how you equated donmerlin with Bill... I got so flustered with this problem, I ended up forgetting which Apple ID I posted under. Here is an update to the problem.
I really wanted to stay with QT 7.0.3 because the latest DVD Studio Pro requires it (as does iTunes for video playing). I tried to stay with QT 7 and revert back to iMovie 4, but because the old iMovie 4 project file was converted to iMovie HD (and there's not way to go back), I basically had to recreate the iMovie project from scratch. I started to do this, by first creating a new iMovie 4 project, then copying all of the 100's of media files from the other project into this one. Once I realized the magnitude of work involved, figuring out what's what, and which clips are transitions and effects, I knew this was a bad way to go. And chances are, it would have still been a problem, since most of what I've read has to do with QT 7 being the problem. So I changed directions.
I am fortunate enough to have two G4's, so I left QT 7.0.3 on this one, and decided to downgrade QT on my other G4. First I ran the QT 7.0.1 Reinstaller (had to use Pacifist, since the Apple installer refused to let it run). Then I ran the QT 6.5.2 Reinstaller. After that, I opened up the iMovie HD project, and lo and behold, the freezing and staggering playback issues were gone! Words cannot express the feeling of relief I had. In retrospect, I am still quite disappointed that Apple introduced an upgrade to QT that caused this horrible problem, and appears to have done nothing to resolve it. The good news is that I found my way around the problem via the QT downgrade path, and I'll never upgrade QT on this other G4 again. Thanks to everyone in sharing in my grief and posting suggestions (both in response to my post and others).

  • 3.1 library not compatible with iMovie '09 and iDVD 7.0.4 ???

I took the Aperture upgrade last night to 3.1 and Aperture itself appears to be running ok, although I haven't tested a ton of the functionality yet. What I was working on was wrapping up a wedding I shot and am putting the final touches on the movies and DVD for my clients.
However, since the upgrade neither iMovie '09 nor iDVD 7.0.4 can access my Aperture library. They seem to think they can see it, but all that happens in the wheel sits and spins. I though maybe this was due tot he current size of my Aperture library (170 gig, about 40k images) but after letting iMovie sit and spin for about 6 hours I don't think that is the problem.
Looks like there is a compatibility bug here.

To Tony: This is a known bug in Aperture 3.1 as earlier posts show. I do have the same bug. I went into few steps for solving it, but didn't find a working way. What I did:
I created a new empty library and imported few photos. This library works, iLife shows the library contents in iPhoto, iMovie and so on.
I exported few projects from my main library and created from them a new library. This library is about 30 GB and it works too.
I exported then my whole library to a new library. This tooks me over 6 hours because the library was around 300 GB with 25k photos. This library still does not show in iLife media browser.
I did a repair permissions and check database consistency on this library too. No change.
As the smaller library with only 30 GB in size does function as expected, it seems it has to do with the larger size of the second or main library or there is something wrong in there.

  • I have produced several short iMovie projects and want to link them into a continuous stream on a DVD.  Can it be done?  All of the projects are in my Moblie Me Gallery

I have produced several short (2 to 3 minute) iMovie projects and want to link them in a continuous stream on a DVD.  The clips are in my Mobile Me gallery.  How can it be done?

You can do that too, it's all in the iDVD program.
But first you want to assemble the separate clips into one big long clip. For that you would use iMovie. Share to the Media Browser (choose the Large size). Let it export then quit iMovie.
Open iDVD, click on the Media button and then the Movies button. Under the iMovie star icon you will see your final assembled clips movie. In the iDVD project window turn on the map view (it's little boxes that look like a flowchart) then drag the iMovie project into the first box:
You can set the project to startup without a Menu, and then loop continuously as well. Go up to the Advanced Menu then click on the Loop movie option to turn it on.
Once checked the Loop movie status will appear as curved arrow icon in the Project Window:
In the lower right corner is the icon indicating this video clip will loop while being played.

  • I imported an hour of video into iMovie HD and cut it down to a 33 sec clip, and emptied the trash.  When I save the project, the file size is 20Gb.  How can I save just the 33 sec clip?

I imported an hour of video into iMovie HD and cut it down to a 33 sec clip, and emptied the trash.  When I save the project, the file size is 20Gb.  How can I save just the 33 sec clip?

Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

  • Is it possible to have iMovie HD and iMovie HD 6 installed on the same Mac

While I like some of the video editing features of iMovie HD 6, the problems with the Ken Burns Effect have killed my ability to create slideshows with iMovie. This worked just fine in iMovie HD (version 5.x). Is it possible to have both applications installed on my iMac and run one for slideshow production and the other for video production?
I searched and could not find a thread that addressed this issue. If there is one, the URL will be greatly appreciated.

    Catspaw,
Thank you. I should have thought of this, as I am running iMovie 8 and iMovie HD 6 on an Intel iMac at work. When I installed iMovie HD 6 onto this system (I'm not a fan of the latest incarnation of iMovie), it was put into a "previous version" folder. Since my G4 iMac already has been upgraded to iMovie HD 6, I'll just put iMovie HD 6 into a folder (maybe label it as the "latest version") and then install iMovie HD 5.
Thank you for the insight on the trash emptying messing with the re-editing of photos. If I start a new project using the same photos from iPhoto (I use the media browser within HD 6 to select my photos in my iPhoto library) and never empty the trash until the project is complete, will the problem not appear? Or, does some magic thing tag my iPhotos so that I have to reimport them into iPhoto before using them again in iMovie HD 6?

  • Can no longer see projects in library viewer in imovie '08 and need to find a different apple editing program

Can no longer see projects in library viewer in imovie ’08 and need to find a different apple editing program
I had approximately 15 projects that I can no longer see in imovie. I have read almost every thread on this community for imovie regarding error messages associated with looking for clips. In each case I have rebuilt the project.  However, today I continually received a message to search for a .dv file. I have located the file and even changed the .dv file to .mov file and yet none of my projects will appear. I have rebooted, deleted the plist and nothing works.
I was planning on buying a new Mac in 2014 with new editing, and use my old Mac as a backup for imovie files. Very frustrated that I can’t work with any projects now! I se the files in my Movies/imovies/iprojects folder but they don’t appear in the viewer.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get back my projects into the viewer? Or, can someone recommend a basic program compatible with imovie 08 that I can use to import my exiting projects into?

No, Wasn't sure if I could continue to upgrade to 9.0.9 since my Mac is relatively old.
Just don't understand why I have to keep starting a project over and over again. As I type this, the imovie icon is jumping and asking for "clip 135-02-05-05;27:15" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly."  I have located this clip and pointed imovie to the clip, and nothing happens. I even try to locate the corresponding clip in the event viewer but it is not there.
Today is the first time I have not been able to see my projects in the viewer.

  • I have lost my iMovie program and I can not install a new one. My computer says that it is not possible to download anything on my main drive

I have lost my iMovie program and I can not install a new one. My computer says that it is not possible to download anything on my main drive

How full is your drive?  You need at least 10/15% of free space.

  • My external hard drive holding half my iMovie events and projects has crashed: how do I restore the events from another source?

My external hard drive holding half my iMovie events and projects has become corrupted.  I have now downloaded all the same files (from a backup in the cloud) to another hard drive - but iMovie is not "seeing" those events or movies in that external hard drive.  Q1 Is there a way of rectifying that?  (I.e. telling iMovie to point to the relevant folders or files on the new external hard drive)
Q2 I have a TimeMachine backup of the corrupted drive in another drive which i keep elsewhere.  Is it worth me attempting to restore from that backup? And if so where can I restore to (as the original external drive is corrupted) and how do i go about that restore process so that the events and projects re-appear?
thanks in advance for your help.  (I thought i would check re Q2 before embarking on the wrong method!)

When I right click on an image, then went to Go to Folder in Library, it pulls up the new external hard drive where I made the new link. When I try to work on the photos, the image still says file image is offline or missing. When I right click on the image to Show in Finder, it says the image could not be used because the original file could not be found. I eventually did click on their locate and found the image. When I linked those two together, a few minutes later ALL the "?" went missing and now IT WORKS!!!!
    That was weird!
Hope this helps someone else in my predicament.

  • Once I finish an iMovie project and I publish it to various destinations (Dropbox iTunes YouTube etc) do I need to keep the original raw video on my MacBook or can I archive it to an external hard drive.

I have now finished 3 iMovie projects and have learned how to prepare them for sharing through various media like Dropbox, iDVD YouTube iTunes etc. but I now have produced a huge number of related files which are filling up my hard drive to the point that I can't import any further raw video until I archive or delete many of these files.
What files do I need to keep on my MacBook in order to be able to keep these various shared locations functioning, and what should I delete or archive?

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

  • Want to use an external hard drive for my photos, iMovie, music and documents for use on my MacBookPro and iMac, can I do it and how?

I want to use an external hard drive to store my photos, imovie, music and documents, how can i do....Thanks

There are very good external drives available...I bought one when I got this MBP in September from OWC, http://www.macsales.com  they are Mac specialists.  Bought their 2 TB Mercury Elite Pro since it was eSATA, Firewire 800/400, and USB interface...use the Firewire 800 now.  Partitioned into a 1.5 TB partition for Time Machine backups and 500 GB for extra storage.  Both show up on the desktop, you just set the destination for you application to be the external drive volume you want to use.
If you want to discuss further, just ask what you want to know.
