IMovie 11 and Jpeg Linear PCM. (Codecs).

Hello everyone. I recently shot on a camcorder for use in iMovie 11. The default format was .mts. It imported to iPhoto, automatically when it recognized the device. I moved it out to convert it to a format readable by iMovie 11, like .mov or .mp4. all imported well.
I have also tried to now reconvert it from the source, without it being imported to iPhoto.
I assembled my project. Again, all well. When I went to "share" it shot me a 25 hours to 5 day estimate.
Off to the Apple store I went, the guys were great as usual. This time they had to escalate the matter to an iApps senior analyst. Again, wonderful fellow.
We determined via a set of tests that the problem is in the source clips. Even though they look and play fine, something is not adding up.
I began to reconstruct the project anew. I used the same source but in very small increments. I noticed that a 3 minute clip was estimating 15+ minutes. iMovie is slow at times, but that is extreme. So, I started fishing around and finally noticed this from my source clips (after conversion from .mts)
Figure 1 below shows the file as dragged from the camera to my hard drive
Figure 2 is after conversion
That is the file I imported to IMovie which is gargantuan.
The good news is that I do still have all the original source (.mts) files; I just don't know if that will help me.
Now, sadly I know nothing about Codecs, but the Jpeg-Linear PCM description leaves me really wondering "my Lord, what have I done?"
And so, after all of your patience, I finally ask this:
If I am onto the answer; is there away I can convert this to an iMovie frienly format that will allow me to export effectively?
I am sorry for the length of this post and am greateful for any help you might offer.

You are correct, of course. I do not have the media card that housed the .mts files. I had, perhaps errantly, thought that by dragging the entire contents of the media card to a hard drive that this would suffice. Clearly, something went wrong. I was able to have iMovie read the files, as I had used a 3rd party package to convert to .mp4. The issue was the size of the resulting files and their behaviour in iMovie.They were so bloated that I could not even skim over the clips in the editor window without a 1-2 second delay and even then, they would stutter.
I seem to now have my hands on a converter that is doing the job, although I am navigating through some audio to video sync issues.

Interlacing issue, no linear pcm codec

I've been working on a project which looks fine in FCPX but when I export it is interlaced.
I noticed the footage im having issues with doesnt appear to have a linear PCM codec listed in its informmation menu when the others do
Im guessing this is my problem but im unsure as how to resolve this.

Linear PCM is the audio format and has nothing to do with interlacing. In the viewer appearance popup switch on both fields to see the interlacing. If you don't want an interlaced delivery format you really should avoid shooting interlaced video. Most cameras now can shoot progressive. If your material is interlaced and you want a progressive output change the project properties to 1080p.

Codec: MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM doesn't function in iMac 10.8.3

I have recently purchased an iMac OSX version 10.8.3 which has Quicktime v10.2. Today while working to edit some old digitized footage I opened up some files that were shot on a Sony FX1 shot in HDV 1080i60 and digitized through FCP (Final Cut Pro) which made them into MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode files files. On my older MacBook Pro 10.5.8 I can open them with Quicktime 7.6.9 and play the files without a problem (it also has FCP with Qmaster, etc). In my research I found I can open and view the files on my iMac, if I open them with VCL. Also note I can open them on the QT player in the iMac and hear the audio just no video.
Now I did read some responses that include converting the footage to H.264 or some other format, however I am dealing with over 500gb of footage so that's not really a viable issue. My assumption is that I am going to need to purchase some upgrade to QT to get this stuff to play or hopefully download a compatible software that will make this all go away with little trouble...
Does anyone know of the software that could solve this problem? Any personal experience out there for solving this?

I think the answer to this in no-not that I know of, unless it was installed as part of the stock purchase. However I am NOT getting a message from MPEG StreamClip to install it or anything for that matter. Instead when I drag and drop the file into MPEG StreamClip I get a white screen from which I can play audio, but no video.
The QT MPEG-2 Playback component is sold by Apple so I assume you would know if you had purchased and installed it. The lack of a message from the MPEG Streamclip app would tend to indicate that either the file you are trying to open does not contain MPEG-2 compressed data or that the data is not being read/loaded to the application. Since you indicate the file opens in apps like VLC, the QT Player, and MPEG Streamclip, can you post a copy of the "Media Information", "Inspector", and "Show Stream Info" windows. (Am assuming here that the MPEG-2/PCM data is not "muxed" within the MOV container which is a separate problem.)
I reviewed the article and downloaded QT7 on this version of iMac, which I gather that it was not there before. However the footage problem is not resolved. I did read where the article suggests I purchase QT7 Pro...is this the next step in the trouble shooting? Do I need to purchase this? It this what you are referring to as the component that need be purchased or is there another? And if no, do you know where can I find the Apple playback component?
a) If you upgrade an older operating system to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and had QT 7 Pro installed on the older system, then the system installer should normally install a 32-/64-bit compatible version of QT 7 and apply the "pro" key automatically. Systems purchased with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion pre-installed do not have a QT 7 player installed.
b) It would be expected that QT 7 v7.6.6 would not play the file if MPEG Streamclip (which you previously tried) could not play the file. Both apps access the same embedded QT structure within the operating system and employ the same codec component configuration installed on your system.
c) It would be a waste of time and money to purchase a QT 7 "Pro" key if you cannot play the file using the standard player since the "Pro" key only adds editing features and not new playback components. Once playback is working you can consider your need for the "pro" features.

See Apple Store link above. However, my personal recommendation at this point would be to hold off on this purchase until it is determined just what your current playback problem is. For instance, can you post a sample problem file for download in order to examine/test on my system?
I am not sure I understand how to answer this completely, however I trancoded/imported these files from tape through the capture feature in FCP5 and the files have been living and transfered from drive to drive over a series of 8 or so years. They have never NOT played on my MacBook Pro which was not actually the computer they were created from, but since they functioned here I didn't think twice about. However I don't think this is answering your question. It may be best to ask how do I learn about if they are orphaned or not, so I can properly answer?
Basically, a media file consists of a container in which data is placed. In some cases only certain foms of compressed data can be contained in a specific container type. In other cases, multiple or any form of compressed data can be contained. For instance, an MOV file container may hold any form of compressed data that was compatible with the codec component configuration for the system on which the file was created. Unfortunately, this does not mean the file will be compatible with other systems. Since you indicate the files were imported or captured by FCP5, their compression format would depend on both the tape device and/or "Easy Setup" software option used to store the original digitized data which thereafter may or may not have been re-rendered to another compression format during or after your project was completed as part of the "output" process. Since there seems to be some question as to the actual compression format of the data you are trying to access, the first thing you need to do is reconfirm this information. Here are the usual medods of doing this:
a) If files do not open in any media player, use the Finder "Info" window to see what it can tell you about the file. This information may be minimal.
b) If the file opens in a media player app, then use that app's "Media Info", "Inspector", "Stream", "Properties" or similar window to see what it can tell you.
c) You can also use a dedicated utility app like MidiaInfo (free) to examine the file characteristics. These apps usually provide the most information.
(NOTE: In the case of most of these apps, it is usually best to simply screen capture the information window and post it to the forum since most users fail to provide suplementary details about the file which may or may not become significant later.)
d) "Orphaned" files usually refer to "reference" files. Reference files do not contain all of the data needed for playback. Instead, they contain a resource pointer to another file that actually contains the needed playback data, as well as, playing instructions telling how the resource data is to be played. When a reference file is moved to a different drive, the resource data must also be moved. It it isn't, then the data will become "orphaned" when the reference file tries to locate and play it. Reference files are usually very small and are handy for the passing of data from one application to another—such as when sending data from FCP to DVDSP for burning or from iMovie to iDVD. If your files play in VLC then either they are unorphaned reference files or they are standalone files. So, once again if the files play in VLC but not in QT, then we need to look at the specific compression formats involved to determine just what the problem is.
THIS IS GREAT NEWS! This is an issue of great interest to me. I copied FCP6 from my MacBook Pro to my iMac, but the files did not function. I also attempted to install them from disk, but I received a message that the software is not supported. I was under the impression FCP 6 was not compatible with this iMac and Mountain Lion, then I had heard from a friend that they corrected that but I haven't seen any change on my system and I have update my software to current at this point. Do you have thoughts on this and/or how I can get my FCP 6 to function on my iMac? I would love to be able to make use of it.
In my case, I migrated the everything (including the FCP Suite installation) from my Leopard system to my new iMac while it was operating under Snow Leopard and updated the iMac to Lion and later to Mountain Lion. Based on what you say, it appears the FCP installer, like the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer package, is not compatible with Lion or Mountain Lion. This does not mean the apps are not compatible with these systems but it does likely mean you would have to use a third-party app like Pacifist to install the FCP software package. (Pacifist can also be used to install the QT MPEG-2 Playback component instead of the "helper" intaller utility provided in the MPEG Streamclip download mentioned above.) Have not really tested this method of installing FCP on Mac OS X v10.8.3, but it does seem logical that it would work since I can still use FCP still operated under Mountain Lion.

Audio drop-out in FCPX with 1920x1080 & 2048x1240p @ 24p (codec Apple ProRes 4444 (Linear PCM))24p

I'm new to this forum.
Is there an audio issue (drop-outs) with FCPX (ver 10.1.2) for 1920x1080 24p, 1080p HD & 2048x1240 24p (2k) - note: films in FCPX are in codec Apple ProRes 4444, Linear PCM?
Very recently I've been working on a show reel and I have imported a file (short film) to snip out a section to add to the show reel.
I set the project to the film's settings i.e.. "set based on first video clip"...(1920x1080 24p, 1080p HD). When I play the film in FCPX the audio "hic-cups"..."dips to silence"..."drops-out" briefly (up to 0.5 secs in duration) and very frequently all the way through (approx 15 mins long film)...note: audio set is at stereo 48kHz. The audio monitors on the right hand side also show the dip taking place (if it's a long enough drop-out).
I also have a version of the film in 2048x1240 24p at 2k, again Stereo 48kHz...and this does the same audio "drop-out" all the way through. I'm unsure what other formats will create this problem i.e. higher or lower aspect ratios than those above.
Is this a software and/or OS issue? Or a hardware issue? Or both!?

Note also: I used Compressor (ver 4.1.2) to convert the files (movies) above to Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Linear PCM and the issue disappeared - the audio and visuals played with no problems. All films play with no issue when opened in QT player. They are also fine when exporting from FCPX. The issue only occurs (as far as I can tell) within FCPX when editing or playing the audio there.
Has anyone encountered this problem?

Seems like you have a point about the "hardware" issue. I'm unsure (new to it all) at what data rate my (er...wonderful) fusion drive provides FCPX for smooth playback - or where I can find that info on the iMac. Playing back movies in the 422 HQ codec seems to have no issues (when I converted the movie from 4444 HQ).
But playing the full 4444 HQ, the picture is smooth, but the audio has these drop-outs - even with "best performance" option ticked. Interesting that the audio suffers, not the picture in FCPX - so not sure what's going on there. I also read - perhaps - that to play a smooth ProRes 4444 HQ movie in FCPX the data rate should be min of 500 Mbs (based upon About Apple ProRes) for HD movies and up (i.e. 2k). ProRes 422 HQ needs a data rate of 220 Mbs - so that is my upper-limit to smooth video&audio playback with the current system I have, I guess.
Does anyone recommend a fast USB3 or Thunderbolt drive (500Mbs+) where I am able to run 4444HQ movies with no issues to picture or sound (away from the fusion drive)?

IMovie 11 and Canon XF Codec used in Canon XF300 and 305

Does anyone know if iMovie11 will support the new video codec Canon is using their just-released professional camcorders, the XF200 and 305?
Canon's description states:
"Canon's adaptation of MPEG-2 for the XF305 Professional Camcorder, named the Canon XF Codec, ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. No, it will not work in iMovie.
This is a bit of a mismatch. A $7500 camera with a $20 editing app.
You can edit with this camera using Final Cut Pro and ProRes422 intermediate codec.

Having said that, if you have Final Cut Pro installed on, say, a Mac Pro with a fast eSata drive array, it might be worth trying in iMovie, just to see. But you would need FCP just to get the codec.

I installed MGEG Streamclip 193b8 and used their utility to install quicktimempeg2 and got a message stating it was successfully installed. (I'm on latest Maverick 10.9.2 on iMac) Then I dragged the VIDEO_TS file from my home DVD into the streamclip app. It asked which of 4 files to use, and I selected the first one. Streamclip played the video with the sound. so far so good. but now I cannot figure how to use quicktime player 10.3 to export this vob file out of streamclip.

I choose the smallest size, 3x4 but I'd prefer to go higher as this DVD was originally a VHS home movie. I'm wondering if after three conversions (VHS,->DVD->MPEG) the resolution will be so poor as to not support a larger size frame? If it can, what size should I select when I export?

MPEG-2 Video Linear PCM Timecode no longer working in FCP7

I edit daily with Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 on my MacBook Pro. I have several projects in which I imported files from an MR HD-100 hard drive. Not only did I successfully edit several projects, but I could open the individual files in QuickTime. They are 1280 x 720 MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode HD (1-1-1) files. Now suddenly they will not open. All I get is a white screen in Final Cut. Even the old finished projects I open in Final Cut show a white screen where this footage used to be. When I try to open one of the files in QuickTime I get the message, "An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie." I have not needed any type of conversion to make these files compatible before. They just worked. Any ideas as to why they suddenly won't work now?

I finally had time yesterday and today to tackle this problem. I read the link you sent and jedi knights had the solution if you had access to a mac still running 10.6.7 which I did not. So.....I bought a 32gb flash, intalled osx 10.6.3 from my disc, reinsalled QT7, did the 10.6.7 update, installed FCP7 so the codecs would load into QT and then transferred the one file (System/Library/QuickTimeComponents.component/Contents/MacOS/QuickTime Components) onto my laptop. ALL IS NOW RIGHT WITH THE WORLD!

Losing Audio, MPEG2, Linear PCM

I'm attempting to take all of my home videos from the past 10 years that have been carfully edited, categorized etc.. and convert them to a common H.264 format. Over the years I've used a variety of editors, mostly on Windows, to create the finished products and as such I'm dealing with a variety of codec and container issues.
The latest issue I've run into has to do with .mpg files that contain mpeg2 video along with 160 Linear PCM audio. They play fine in Winodws but QT X refuses to play them nicely. I've got FCPX and Compressor 4 installed on this machine and other non Linear PCM audio MPEG 2 files play fine.
When I try and convert these files to H.264 using Compressor 4 the program converts the video just fine but basically ignores the audio since it believes there isn't any (as seen in Compressor Inspector). Other programs such as MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake etc.. deal with the audio just fine. I'd use those programs to do the transcode but I'm trying to have a consistent transcoder so that I do not run into compatibility issues down the road. Any idea why Compressor cannot see this audio?
Another option I tried was to demux the stream before transcoding. I could successfully do that and get the audio into an .aiff but do not know if compressor is capable of remuxing ( I don't believe it is ). TSMuxer which I've used before doesn't appear to be compatbile with Lion either so I'm looking for other ideas.
Any help would be appreciated.

MPEG-4 Video, Linear PCM

Hello,
I transfered files off a Sony XDCAM to my MAC to edit in Final Cut Express. The file shows up as an MP4 but when you look at it, the codec is MPEG-4 Video, Linear PCM. Quicktime and FCE do not recognize it and I'm not surprised. My question is what do I need to convert the file to so I can use it in FCE and what is a good software to do that?

Linear PCM, XDCAM EX HD420 1080i50(35 Mb/s)

(a) In FCP X, the codec of my video is shown as "Linear PCM, XDCAM EX HD420 1080i50(35 Mb/s)".
     (1) Is this same as H.264?
     (2) If not, is it possible to convert to H.264?
     (3) If possible, can it be done in FCP X, without using Compressor 4.
(b) In Compressor 4, there is an option to change SD Videos to HD. Is that the quality of the video increases or is it just only the format changes without improvement in quality?

1. You can do a batch export from Compressor or Streamclip, but you do first have to get the media into your computer.
2. If Streamclip can do it, it will be indistinguishable from Compressor.
3. I don't think I understand this. If you edit an XDCAM project you can export it to H.264. There is no need to make it a compound.
4. Absolutely. You have an image that's 720x480 and you're blowing it up to a minimum of 1280x720. Yes, it will deteriorate. Even specially designed software such as that from Red Giant shows deterioration. There is actually less deterioration going from HD to SD.
4. Because some people have SD media and need to put it into an HD project and don't want it to appear with windowboxing around it as you often see on television news.

AVI movie - Cinepak & PCM codecs - Audio compatible with QT?

I have an AVI movie made with Cinepak video codec and PCM audio "codec".
PCM is really more of a standard uncompressed audio format than an actual "codec".
In default configuration, QT fully supports AVI/Cinepak. I know that it also supports the ADPCM audio codec.
But my vid is PCM, not ADPCM.
My question - will PCM play on QT on a Mac that has only the standard codec set that came from the factory (ie, no need to require Mac viewers to find and install a codec to before they can play the vid)?

Change the video format into MOV with applications like MPEG Streamclip. You may find this VTC helpful.
That bitrate is too high for MOV, so you may have to re-encode it. iMovie does not read all video codecs, so you may have to re-encode it anyway. I have never imported MPEG-4 Part 2 video into iMovie, which I don't use often. At least, I know that it reads MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.164).

QT: Poor video quality for gradients when Motion JPEG A/B codec used.

I have a problem using the Quicktime (7.6) and the Motion JPEG A/B codec.
My workflow is as follows:
1. Create animation with Quartz Composer. This animation should use gradients from dark red to white.
2. Export the animation as Quicktime film (MOV), set full HD (1920x1080), duration e.g. 2 minutes.
3. Open exported MOV with Quicktime(Pro)
4. Export again to Quicktime film, now choose Motion JPEG A for codec, set quality to best.
5. Check the exported film. The gradient is not smooth, I see bright and dark lines. The quality of the gradient is poor.
I checked the other codecs. When I use "Animation" then the gradient is smooth and beauty.
Unfortunately I have to use Motion JPEG codec due to customer requirements.
Does anybody have an idea, how I can improve the quality? Maybe internal QT settings? Other external Motion JPEG codec ?

I need Motion JPEG A/B or PhotoJPEG This is my "final distribution format" required by the customer.
I have problems not only with the red color. Even using grey, blue or yellow gradients produces bad output.
You're right. Animation codec produces what I will accept and want, but the files are huge sized and my customer doesn't accept this format.
Please note, that I already set the high quality playback setting in Quicktime.

Why Does idvd take my 26.2gb imovie file and compress it so small?

Please help. I've created a 17+ minute long imovie file that is 26.2gb. When I view the file information in idvd it says that it's only 0.6gb.
I've already burned a test copy and it looked way too compressed. Like a bad jpg file. From idvd, I burned 'best quality' to a disc image and toasted it. I know that idvd decides who to do the compression in some complex way, but is there another method to not have so much compression?

DV (as normally exported from iMovie to iDVD) runs
about 13 GB per hour. You say your content is 17
minutes and 26.GB - what CODEC did you use?
DVDs are in MPG-2 compressed format. In Best Quality
mode iDVD will take 120 minutes of DV content and
compress it to about 4 GB. So 17 minutes of content
could be about .6 GB.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't pick a codec. I just clicked create idvd from imovie and it did it for me. I've made at least 10 other dvds and haven't seen this much loss of quality before. I'm just not sure why...
0.6 was project size and I guess your math is right, but I've very disappointed with quality.

I have a fairly new iMac wI now have iMovie events and Final Cut pro events that are duplicates. Does that mean that all my video is copied onto my hard dive twice?

If I have video in imovie and final cut pro X, does that mean there are two copies of the video, one for each piece of SW? If so, how do I get rid of the imovie events and keep only the Final Cut Pro X events (video)? I don't want multiple copies of the same video stored on the hard drive.

If you import to FCP directly from the Camera or from a camera archive, you would likely import choosing Optimized Files which would go to a FCP event that is in ProRes 422 codec. This would be in addition to your iMovie Event which would import using the Apple Intermediate Codec. So you would have two copies of the same information. An AIC copy and a larger ProRes copy.
However, if you use FILE/IMPORT/iMOVIE EVENT LIBRARY, FCP will not duplicate the event files from iMovie. It will treat them as referenced files, and will point to the iMovie Event files in the reference. So there is no duplication. You will be editing Apple Intermediate Codec files in FCP.
However, FCP will create Event folders. In addition to the reference information, these will contain thumbnail files that are compatible with FCP, stabilization and analysis files that are compatible with FCP, as well as any intermediate render files that are associated with the Event.
