IMovie 11 crashed and lost my project

Hello.
My kids love butterflies. We recently released our latest butterfly family and shot lots of video in the process. While creating a movie in IMovie '11, and after days of work and meticulous editing, the program crashed. "You must restart your computer" said the message in 5 or 6 different languages. After holding the power button on the MacBook Pro as instructed, I started IMovie only to find the project was not in the project list. Other past projects were there, but not our Butterfly movie!
I searched using finder under the name of the project, and found it listed in the IMovie projects folder. However, I cannot open it by clicking. IMovie does not seem to recognize it.
Can anyone HELP? I could always remake the movie, but its heartbreaking because it was minutes away from being FINISHED!

I don't believe there is anyway to get the video back. The same thing happened to me and it's been forever lost, unfortunately. Maybe if you talk to the Apple specialists, they may find a way to let you open it again.

I just got the new MacBook Air for Christmas and am running Mavericks and iMovie 10.0.1. I have been working on a 20 minute long video for school for the last few weeks until today when my iMovie suddenly crashed and now my projects are no where to be found. I have tried deleting the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist file (but i don't even have that file, mine is something like 'com.apple.imovieapp.shared ... plist)in the preferences folder but that did not do anything. I have also deleted and reinstalled iMovie but still nothing. When I open up iMovie my libraries are there and I can see the video names under the libraries, but there are empty. I can also see some of my events when I click on "All Events". I have done everything I can think of to try to get my movies back. Also, when I go to my iMovie projects folder from my user name in the HD, it is there as .rcproject but it is in a data format. Unfortunately, since it is a new computer, I do not have a time machine backup to recover from. If anyone had any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm desperate!

If you have iMovie Projects and imovie Events folders in <user name> / Movies, these are from iMovie 9, so I infer that you have transferred them from an old machine and upgraded them to imovie 10.
If this is correct you should still have your projects and events. iMovie 10 stores everything in packages with the extension .imovielibrary. If this has become corrupt you should be able to upgrade them again (they will automatically go into a new library). You will find an empty file with a name something like "updated to iMovie 10" in the events and projects folders. These need to be trashed in order to allow them to be upgraded afreash.

I exited iMovie and lost my project. I am able to find it in Finder, under the Movies tab, but can not get it back to a project in iMovie. Is there a way to restore it?

I fully sympathise with you, as I recently experienced the same issue (as have many others).
Projects always appear as normal in Finder in the Home folder Movies/iMovie Projects (or on an external disk at the top level in Movies/iMovie Projects). Nothing looks untoward there.
However, when iMovie is opened again after an editing session, the most recent project worked on does not appear in the listing of projects in iMovie's Project Library - although it is still listed in the Finder folder . This happens for no apparent reason - no unexpected quits, freezes, or crashes, and nothing else out of the ordinary. iMovie is simply not recognizing the project. It can't even be opened by double-clicking on the project in Finder.

I don't know what version of iMovie you are using, nor the Mac OS X version (that's always helpful when posting questions).
However, usually when iMovie has the type of problem you mention, it's advisable to firstly trash the preference file. Here's how to go about it for iMovie '11 on Mountain Lion (similar methods apply for other versions):
Go to your Home folder <your user name>/Library/Preferences (NOT the Library folder at the top level in Macintosh HD). Similar to Lion, on Mountain Lion (10.8.3), the Home Library folder will be hidden (unlike pre-Lion OS X versions). To access it, click and hold down Go in the Finder menu bar, then press and hold down the Option key on the keyboard - the Library folder will appear in the drop down list. Slide the pointer down to Library and, as you release the pointer, the folder will open in Finder. Now you can navigate to the Preferences folder.
In your user Library/Preferences folder, locate a file named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist". With iMovie closed, drag this file to the Desktop. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh preference file with the default settings (this happens in the background as iMovie is loading).
If iMovie now opens and appears to be working properly, you can change the default settings in the menu item "IMovie > Preferences", as desired. Also, it's now safe to drag the old preference file to the Trash. Trashing the file will not harm any existing Events or Projects.
Note that these instructions are for iMovie '11 (currently version 9.0.9). For users on earlier versions, the preference file has a different but similar name. For example, for iMovie '09 (that's version 8.0.6) the file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Earlier versions may or may not have a number in the name, for example, "com.apple.iMovie.plist"
If this doesn't fix the problem with iMovie crashing, please come back as I have another possible solution to offer.

Hm ... I guess I can't edit the post above. Anyway, I seem to have solved it by ...
Quitting iTunes.
Going into Home / Music / iTunes, and renaming the file "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Library (corrupt).itl".
Entering Time Machine, and restoring the "iTunes Library.itl" file from a few days ago. I went back two days, which seemed far enough back to be "before" the problem but not far enough back to have trouble with recent acquisitions.
Re-opening iTunes - and everything seemed to be back in order.
So that's fine for now. We'll see if the solution is stable.
Very, very tentative assignment of blame: I believe iTunes crashed earlier today after I'd synced photos from my iPhone to iPhoto, and then iTunes crashed while iPhoto was closing (and taking its sweet time doing so). If that was indeed the case, that's at least the second time in the past couple of months that trying to sync iPhone photos to iPhoto has caused me significant problems. (The last time led to 80% of my iPhone suddenly being occupied by "Other", and a full restore of the darn thing.)

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, not good, then you can redownload some purchases in some countries.

IMovie quit unexpectedly and deleted my project

iMovie quit unexpectedly and deleted my project. I had finalized the project, then went back to edit it. All of a sudden it froze, quit on me and when re-opened imovie, that project was gone. All my other projects are there. I only had 2 last edits so if someone could help me find my project it would be much appreciated! Any help will do!

Can you drag them from the trash back into the Timeline or Clips Pane?
Which Trash by the way - iMovie's, or Finder's?
It pays to save very frequently - it reads as though you maybe had not saved for some time.
If, however, you have been regularly saving and the clips have still been dumped in the trash, then you may be able to retrieve the situation by this means:
Control-Click the project's icon (with the star on it), and select Show Package Contents. You will see a file like this - (project name).~iMovieProj. This is a previously saved version of your project. Opening that should get you back to the project's state as at the last Save.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix the xml file or prevent it's damage except to keep a current backup copy of the domain.sites2 file. You can do that on an hourly basis with Time Machine or use a backup application like Synk Standard which can do incremental backup (i.e. copy just those new or changed files) at any time.
As for separating the sites into their own domain files I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
There is a downside to this method if you're publishing to MobileMe. When publishing multiple sites to MMe from their own separate domain file the last published site will be the default site when using the default URL for that MMe account: http://web.me.com/MobileMeAccountName/. That could mess up any CNAME forwarding if you have a domain name pointed to your default MMe site.

Hi flkeen, Did you try to uninstall that program which you install to improve speed ..see if that works after un install that program....and restore the firefox after uninstalling that program.

Compaq computer crashed and lost all music that was on the computer. How would I go about getting a listing of all purchased items and download them again? I know when i first got set up it said I could download up to 2 times when purchased and I have only downloaded once. But need a listing of songs as well.

One thing that I also recommend in the future is to back your iTunes library up relatively regularly. You can get your purchases in the cloud just fine, typically, but at the very least, it will save some time by backing it up.

My iMovie crashed and deleted my project

Hi there! I am freaking out I've been working on a project for a while and then my iMovie just crashed. It's not showing up in my projects folder and I also have carbonite back up but I can't find it there either. My project folder says theres 8 projects but only 7 shows up. If anyone could help me get it back that would be great!

If you are running Time Machine, go back in time until you find a working copy.
If not, check the Movies/iMovie Projects folder.
If they are there, deleting the Plist may help.
Finally, check the Trash and see if they ended up in there.

For the first time I switched my Canon T3I to 60FPS/720P in order to record a new parkour video largely using slow motion. I planned to slow the footage down to a smooth 30FPS in Imovie '09.
Fast forward three months. I've taken plenty of 60FPS footage and am two minutes into my video. All of a sudden Imovie is actually very strangely. It takes a very long time to load when I open the program, sometimes as long as 5 minutes. And now, it crashes and freezes when I try to select my 60FPS project no matter what I do. Half the time it won't load the Project Editor, and the few times it does, it will not play the video. I can hear audio, but the Preview screen on the right is either blank or ahopeless mess.
It's odd because I've been using Imovie 09 for years and have not had a problem. I've used it with HD footage but never 60FPS. I edited the project for months, optimized and slowed down nearly two minutes of footage, and haven't had a problem. But now Imovie won't work no matter what I do. I've checked software update, made sure no other programs or opened, restarted, no good.
Does anyone know why Imovie is spazzing and how I can fix it? Thank you.
EDIT: Just so it's clear, I don't know for certain if 60FPS is the problem. Imovie '09 seems to be having problems with all my projects. Out of nowhere, everything was functioning fine just last week.
