IMovie 11 does not recognize camcorder

I have a JVC GR-D72U DV recorder. I have been able to import video from this camcorder to my old Pismo Powerbook running iMovie v.3.0.3 and OS 10.4.11 for several years using Firewire. Now I have a 2012 iMac running iMovie 11 v.9.0.4 and OS 10.7.5 and my camcorder is no longer recognized. I have looked all over the support pages for this so please don't send me the following link - it doesn't help me - I've tried everything listed in that document.
iMovie '11: If iMovie doesn’t recognize your camcorder
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2146
There has to be a fix for this somewhere. Is Apple not backward compatible with it's software? I have been a loyal Apple supporter since the late '80s and am becoming frustrated with what I have seen in the last couple of years. Sure, I could purchase an expensive movie editor, but I just want to work and edit home videos - I don't need all the bells and whistles of something more. If it worked before it should work now.
Do I really have to edit video on my Pismo until it dies?

Hi
If You use a FW-400 to FW-800 converter-box - they use to be problematic.
Else see if You find help in my notes:
NO CAMERA or A/D-box
Cable
• Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
• Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
• Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
A/D-box
• Is the dip-switches set right ?
• Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
• Try resetting it
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
• FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
External device’s (hard disk’s)
• Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
• MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
• GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
• Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
• White MacBooks - don't
• MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
• Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
• Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
• If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
• Screen Saver - OFF
• Energy Saver - OFF
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
from Karsten.
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
a technical check.
connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
choose 'About . . / More . .
under Firewire.. what do you read . . ?
More
• FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
• Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
• Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choice / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
No Camera or bad import
• USB hard disk
• Network storage
• File Vault is on

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
//support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

I have gone through the steps of this article. I am connected by firewire. I have disconected, recontected, turn on and off and restarted and nothing. I have made sure the date and time are correct. I did upload this tape from at old VHS tape of family pictures. This handycam wasn't a problem with older imovie versions and older systems 9. When I go to the sony site they only talk about connecting to a pc. When I go to apple profiler and fire wire is just says "
Fire Wire bus: Max speeed up to 400 Mb/sec" It does not recognize the camara. The only thing that I have not done is go buy a new firewire cord but I am worried that imovie can't recongnize the camara. Thanks for the help

  • Imovie 11 does not recognize my panasonic pv-gs150.

I have a panasonic mini dv camcorder and am attempting to import to imovie 11 via firewire.  imovie will not recognize my camera so I cannot import.  How do import for editing - do I need different software?

The interface with DV cameras is very flaky. Too much intervening hardware may not work. However, I would assume iMovie could at least see the camera.
However, if it is an Unknown device, it isn't getting passed to iMovie as a camera.  Try bypassing the Hub and see if it at least identifies.
I was testing an old Canon DV camcorder to see if I had a problem. I did, but I think it is related to the cabling. I had a 4-pin to 6-pin cable going into an old, portable hard drive, then to a FW400 to FW800 cable, through my daisy-chain of FW800 drives. I got no video, but the controls worked (play, pause, etc.). I then connected directly to the Mac Mini, bypassing the hard drive daisy-chain, but still no video. I'm pretty sure the no-video is a cable problem, so I ordered a 4-pin to FW800.

  • Premiere Elements 10 Does Not Recognize Camcorder

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get Adobe Elements 10 to recognize my Canon Elura 60 camcorder?  The program worked fine on my Sony Viao laptop, but the laptop died and has been replaced by a new desktop computer.  The program recognizes my Canon Legria HV40, but not the Elura 60.  The HV40 can not playback the tapes recorded on the Elura 60, so using it to transfer the data is not an option.  I did notice after upgrading the Elements 10 that the list of supported devices did not include the Elura 60.  Could this upgrade be the diference between the original program working with the Elura before but not now?  Any help gratefully received.  Thanks for your time.

    Hi Steve
Many thanks for getting back to me re this issue.  I am using a Firewire connection and as I said before Elements 10 does recognize the HD camcorder, but not the digital SD camcorder.  I am baffled by the fact that the program was working fine on my Sony Viao laptop that perished.  At that time I only had the Canon Elura 60, as my HV30 was stolen in a break-in at our second home in France.  The HV40 was purchased so that I could record in HD to replace the stolen HV30.  I may try on of the ''freebie'' programs recommended by another forum contributor.  I will buy another software program before I call Adobe tech support at £35 a pop.  If I could only get the tape data onto the hard drive I am certain that I would be home and dry.

  • IMovie 11 does not recognize my JVC mini cam

Is there any solution to this?  My JVC mini cam connects and works on my old iMac that has iMovie 6, but my newer iMac (10.10.1) with iMovie 11 (10.0.6) won't recognize the camera at all.  Firewire 800 port to firewire 400 port to cable to JVC  GR-D350U.  Help says iMovie 11 works with most JVC tape-based cameras.

The interface with DV cameras is very flaky. Too much intervening hardware may not work. However, I would assume iMovie could at least see the camera.

  • IMovie 6.0.3 does not recognize built in iSight Camera on new iMac

New iMac, Intel, OS 10.5.4, QT 7.5.
Built in Camera works with Photo Booth, the new iMovie 7.1.3 and iChat.
iMovie HD 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 does not recognize the camera. Opening a new project results in a No Camera Connected error. I have tried selecting various options in the video format drop down when creating a new project. I have repaired permissions, tried it under various users, removed the imovie plist, reinstalled imovie (both 6.0.3 and 6.0.4) without success. All 10 of the new computers are exhibiting this problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

That is not an option that I can select on the imac's. On my iBook under 10.5.4 with iMovie HD 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 I can click on the triangle next to the camera icon and select the built in iSight camera. On the new iMacs that does not work. The built in iSight is not listed as an option.

  • IMovie (and iMac) does not recognize device(s)

Hello and thanks for reading.  I know this topic is like beating a dead horse but this one is unique.  I'm a professional editor and I couldn't figure this out so any help would be appreciated.  Here's the play by play:
I edit using FCP 5.1.4 and have for years.  I've had the same set up running for years and do high volume editing.
I have a chain of 4 Lacie drives, all connected by firewire.
At the end of that string, I have my tape player for capturing footage, a Sony GV-HD700, which then goes on to the TVs, DVD players, etc.
Also the end of that string, I also have a disc burner for making DVDs.
    So it goes: iMac > Lacie #1 > Lacie #2 > Lacie #3 > Lacie #4 > Sony tape player & DVD burner > TVs, VCRs, etc.
Yesterday, I was in a rush and the DVD burner was going slow so I unplugged it from the end of the string of Lacie drives and plugged it directly into the back of the computer to see if it would burn faster.
It didn't, so I plugged it back into the end of the Lacie string.
At that point, Lacie #4 became unrecognizable to the computer and therefore so was the tape player, which is further down the chain.
When I plugged the tape player high up the chain, into Lacie #3, it still was not recognized.
I plugged the tape player (Sony GV-HD700) directly into the back of the computer...still not recognized.
I took the Sony GV-HD700 into our other editing bay and it was still not recognized.
I pulled out my camera (Sony HDR-FX1000) and plugged it directly into the back of the original computer...recognized just fine.
I plugged Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into the back of Lacie #2...recognized just fine.
I took the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into our other editing bay...recognized just fine.
I have a big deadline so I said "Screw it." and was just going to capture from the camera for the time being.
I reset the Lacie drive chain, plugged the Camera into the back of Lacie #4 (just like the original setup) and BANG: Lacie #4 and the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera was not recognized.
I plugged the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera directly into the back of the computer...still not recognized.
I took the Sony HDR-FX1000 camera into our other editing bay...still not recognized.
I thought it might be a Final Cut Pro issue so I pulled up iMovie and it does not recognize any device connected to the computer even though I'm looking directly at it plugged in.
The entire iMac has lost the ability to recognize devices that I've used for years.  I've now lost the ability to capture footage and I'm running out of time.  It's almost as if the devices were getting infected by one of the Lacie drives (I think Lacie #4).  Is that even possible?  Has anyone ever heard of something like this?  I don't know if it's something I need to change on the iMac to recognize them again, or if it's a setting on the device to reset the connection, or if somehow the Lacie drive corrupted the devices and made them unrecognizable to iMacs.
    It's very, very weird.
    Thanks for your help.
    27" iMac (2009)
    OS X 10.8.5
    Final Cut Pro 5.1.4
    Tape player: Sony GV-HD700
    Camera: Sony HDR-FX1000
I've had this setup for years so I don't know what type firewire it is.

  • IMovie does not recognize MPEG 4

I have downloaded a 131 MB MPEG 4 movie and am trying to import it into iMovie on my iMac.
I have done this successfuly lots of times before.
I have the latest version of iMovie.
For some reason iMovie says it does not recognize this MPEG 4 movie!
I have tried playing it in Quicktime and exporting it into iMovie and nothing happens either.
    Any ideas?

    Thank you for your suggestions.
Quicktime player plays the movie fine. I even try expoting it from there to iMovie which does not work.
    The file info:
    MPEG-4Movie
    Size 84,774,813 bytes.
    Dimension 626x352**
    Codecs: H.264,AAC
The only difference I can see from similar Movies that worked are the dimensions.
They are 640 x 360 on my other MPEG 4 movies!

  • Imovie 11 does not support 8MM?

I have been struggling in the Imac community on a problem for a while.  I have an old Sony Handycam TRV-530 that uses digity 8mm tape.  My Imac is one of the new ones that no longer has a firewire port.  I purchased the firewire to Thunderbolt adapter at my local Apple store.  When I plug the camcorder into the Thunderbolt port on the Imac, I can see the camcorder on FaceTime.  I can use the camcorder as my camera on FaceTime.  When I pull up Imovie so that I can import all my old home movies, Imovie does not recognize the camcorder.  I then took the firewire cable and plugged it directly into my wife's 2009 Macbook's firewire port, the camcorder was immediately recognized and was ready to import.  Her Macbook has Imovie 9.
So.....either there is a problem with the Thunderbolt adaptor or Imovie 11 no longer supports 8MM digital tape?  How can I determine the correct answer?

Hi I have a similiar problem to yours with imovie 11. Just wondering if you could tell me how you fixed yours?
I purchased my new iMac two days ago mainly to use iMovie.
But after editing projects for around 30mins it seems to freeze and requires a force quit. When I restart I can't edit or playback the project, almost as though it is locked.
I've tried deleting preferences for imovie and repairing through utilities. I've also tried deleting the projects and starting new ones but the same problem happens after about 30mins of editing.
Installed latest updates for OS X 10.7.1, and using imac with imovie 11
I'm a brand new mac user and to encounter this problem after just one hour of use is quite frustrating.
Ps. I'm not sure if its related but in Finder on the left when all the places are listed, I don't see my username... not sure if it should be there?

  • HT3258 what about final cut does not recognize mts file

what about final cut does not recognize mts file

If you have an AVCHD camcorder, you need to select one of the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec Easy Setups in FCE that matches how you shot the video in your camcorder.  (eg, AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 would be appropriate for camcorders produced for North America unless you selected some other video type in the camera's setup.)   After selecting the appropriate Easy Setup, create a new sequence then import the video from your camcorder.
If you only have the .mts files themselves (perhaps because you copied them to your hard drive without their entire surrounding AVCHD folder structure), that's another matter.  In that case you need Clipwrap or similar app to transcode the .mts files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec before importing them into FCE.   You still need to have the correct easy setup in FCE.
It would help to know exactly what make/model camcorder you have, and what model Mac and versions of OS X and QuickTime.

  • Still having problems - FC does not recognize HD camera!

Camera: Sony HVRA1U. Final cut does not recognize it.
    Audio/Video Settings are:
    Sequence Preset: HDV1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV (I think)
    Camera menu settings:
    VCR HDV/DV: HDV
    iLink Con: Off
Nothing. Just does not recognize the camera. Now, it does on iMovie. So what's the deal? I've restarted all systems, unplugged every cable, etc. Done everything possible.
To top it off, it HAS recognized it before. Now it's just stopped.
Also, I'm not exactly computer savvy so I'll need a step by step approach on how I could possibly solve this. Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again.
A workaround would be to use Image Capture to upload from the camera to a folder on the desktop and then import into iPhoto. Or you may have to use a card reader, drag the image files from it to a folder on the desktop and then import (a preferred workflow IMO).
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I use my AppleID to "Find my iPhone" successfully on iPhone 4, iPhone4S, iPad, iMac. All show up. New iPhone5 iOS 6.0.2 uses same AppleID in the General iCloud settings, Contacts, email, photostream, safari bookmarks, reminders, notes, are all synced fine. I can even see how much storage is available in my iCloud account on the new iPhone5.  The Problem is that "Find my iPhone" does not recognize the new iPhone 5. Yes location services is turned on. The iPhone5 can find its location in the map app, can find all other devices in "Find my iPhone" just not itself in "Find my iPhone" I tried a hard reset.
    ANY IDEAS?

How about when the passcode is correct but not recognized?
I was prompted to enter a password to unlock the device when I downloaded IOS 7 several months ago.
Entered the password every single day for months, never a problem.
Yesterday I attempted to download the most recent IOS version and I was asked for a passcode before I could do that (my phone was unlocked). Online I found out the passcode is the unlocking password. It did not work and I was unable to use the phone for several minutes after 5 attempts. I just stored the phone and when home I charged it overnight.
This morning I unlocked the phone as usual  and used it without a problem for emails, phone calls. etc.. Now, after not having used it for a while, I am asked for the passcode to unlock it as usual, and although I am sure I entered the right code, it is not recognized. I am unable to unlock my phone, although I have done it for months.
This is not a case of forgotten passcode! And I see it has happened to many others that use 4s and 5s iphones.
i could attempt the iTune connection fix, but it troubles me that all solutions are presented for forgotten pascodes, and in many cases actually the passcodes are not recognized. Which means, it will keep happening unless Apple offers a solution.
