IMovie '11 dvd creation issues

Hi -- I have a new iMac that did not include iDVD as apple no longer includes this in the iLife package.  I have imported a movie into iMove but I see no option to burn this movie onto a dvd disk.  I'm running iMovie '11 v 9.0.4
The format of the movie imported is .m4v.  Am I missing something?
  Thanks.

You will need DVD software either iDVD or a 3rd party app.
Two ways to go.
Approach the Apple store where you bought your iMac and ask them to give you a copy of the iLife 11 disc.
Tell them you need iDVD. Many others have reported that Apple will come to the party.
Otherwise you will need to buy an iLife 11 disc which contains iDVD and install it on your computer.
You can source these discs on eBay, Amazon or Apple stores.
Another way is to buy 3rd party DVD burning software such as Roxio.
Best, Z.

  • Best way to burn iMovies to DVD

I am looking for advice on the best way to get iMovies onto DVD. I have spent a lot of time reviewing discussions & answers already posted... probably too long as I am not getting anywhere!
I have built a movie in Movie 11 from AVCHD files (1080i) shot on a cannon SD card camera. This has been shared as a Large movie to me Apple TV1.. looks great.
I then shared the project to iDVD. The DVD produced was very poor. 'Jaggies' is a description I have seen in the discussions. Static horizontal lines are broken up & appear to move. I also included a pile of photos on the DVD as a slideshow. Just dropped in 100 high res Jpegs. Again, these appeared as very poor quality.
Exactly the same quality when using DVD+, DVD-, Memorex or Sony (now trying Verbatim).
I have tried dropping the movie into iDVD from Finder rather than sharing from iMovie. Same quality issue.
If I play the movie on my mac straight from Finder... it looks great. If I import it into iDVD (by sharing from iMovie or dropping in the file from media browser, you can see on the preview the jaggies are back
I created a disk image of the movie & burned to DVD... disk wouldn't play in the DVD player..
So, the question. What is the best way to get a movie produced in iMovie onto a DVD in terms of image quality. Have I missed a step in burning the disk image to a DVD?
Ideally, I don't want to use third party Apps. I have downloaded the trial of FCP. Will this handle everything in terms of movie production including DVD burn? I don't want to spend this sort of money, but if needs must..
Really grateful for any help & sorry for asking the largely the same question again!

    Hi
Fully understands Your dilemma - BUT
    • iMovie'08 to 11 - Can not deliver 100% full quality over to iDVD or any DVD authoring program as they all discard every second line in the picture when going from Event's to Project's. NO medicine known to me to heal this.
I use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut - as they can deliver 100% - interlaced SD-Video
    • Video-DVD is as standard only - interlaced SD-Video and can never be any better
I created a disk image of the movie & burned to DVD... disk wouldn't play in the DVD player..
    • You must use - Disk Util tool - to do this burn from .img file right ! Else the structure on Your DVD will not be a Video-DVD but a Data-DVD and as this it will NOT play back on any DVD-player.
I have downloaded the trial of FCP. Will this handle everything in terms of movie production including DVD burn?
    • Yes - but not in as elegant form as iDVD are able to produce. But I'm told that the full 100% interlaced SD-Video quality is transferred over and used - so Your MOVIE will look as good as it's possibly. FOR FULL information and clever thoughts about this - ASK IN - FinalCut Pro-X forum - they know - I go on hear-say.

  • What is the best program for editing and DVD creation?

I am looking for a software that allows me to create a DVD with menus, etc.   I would prerfer to edit in iMovie and export my video to a DVD software.  But if anyone knows of a better editing system with DVD creation possibilities please let me know!

Better is a very subjective term when it comes to editing and personal preferences play an important role. In any case on the Mac you have these choices:
    • Buy iLife with iMovie and iDVD (Amazon, Ebay). This should be able to fulfill most needs.
    • Get Adobe CS 6 with Premiere Pro and Encore DVD. Professional software with a learning curve if you come from iMovie
    • Get Final Cut Pro X. Shouldn't be too difficult to learn for iMovie users but with very limited DVD authoring
Both have trial versions that you can check out. The cost for FCP X is much lower than that for CS 6.
On a side note, there is also Avid but I can't really say much about it having never used it.

  • IMovie to DVD

How do you burn an iMovie project of a couple of hours or more top end onto a DVD ?

That's what iDVD is for, presuming you're referring to a video DVD, one that can be played in any normal DVD player. Roxio's Toast is another option, if you need it's other features (it's DVD creation is fairly simplistic). For a more professional application, you'd be looking at DVD Studio Pro which is part of Final Cut Studio.

  • What is the easiest way to burn imovies onto DVD's.   I want to burn more than one movie onto DVD as I create.    Can I continue to burn onto the same DVD as the movies are created?

What is the easiest way to burn my imovies onto DVD's?    I want to burn movies as I create them and then continue to add more movies to the same DVD as the years go by -- until the DVD is full!    Is this possible?

  • ITunes for 64bit Windows 7 Driver/CD/DVD/Drive Issues-

    Hi There
I am sure that there are many many users out there suffering the same frustration as me in regard to ITunes just not working properly with Windoews 7 (64Bit).
I have been trying to solve the mystery of "ITunes for Windows Registry Settings Warning When Opening Itunes.
I have tried all the recommended actions to correct this problem without any success and I do mean ALL.
Below is a screen shot of my registry, can anyone see anything wrong with it?
In the meantime (Last four months) I have stopped using ITunes and instead have used Digital 7, this will be my very last attempt to get ITunes working properly, failure will mean consigning ITunes to the same place as any other Software that does not do wshat it says on the can.
    I hope someone can help.

That's good that it is in device manager, but what about in Computer with the rest of the drivers?
Also, are the drives listed in Computer and device manager or just device manager?
I want to verify if the symptoms are present for a particular software issue before looking at other issues.  I really doubt it is a driver issue at this point.  If it was, then I suspect the issue would be present from day one.
It could be that the lens has dust buildup preventing it from working properly.  They do make CD cleaning kits that have a special CD designed to clean the laser as it passes over the lens.  If you happen to have one of these, or access to one, I recommend trying this step to make sure it isn't as simple as dust buildup interfering with the laser.
It could also be hardware failure, but I would like to try a few other steps before coming to that conclusion.
It may be worth reviewing this document as it covers a lot of the most common issues behind DVD drive issues. Feel free to skip any steps you have already tried.
    Let me know what happens.

  • 10.6.7 - general pdf creation issues?

I wondered whether anyone else had run into this issue after updating to 10.6.7 when using pdfs created by Preview - perhaps related to the pdf/font issue.
If it is generally happening, then the 10.6.7 pdf-font issue has an even larger
    impact than previously described:
    1. Open a pdf document in Preview
    2. Select a region and save to clipboard
    3. Save as a new pdf file
    4. Then try importing it as a "Picture" into any of the new Office 2011 apps: Word, PPT, etc.
This crashes my office 2011 apps (latest version, 14.02) But NOT any earlier version of Office (2008. etc.), which may not do as much pdf checking.
Before the 10.6.7 upgrade (ie, 10.6.6), this never happened with Office 2011.
Acrobat complains when opening the Preview-created pdfs about 'missing fonts', so I suspect some sort of pdf creation issue.
Any fixes (besides the previously suggested one of downgrading to 10.6.6)
If it's a real bug (not just local to my system), then it's a more far-reaching one than previously described.

So, 3 different Apple tech support people say they know this problem affects
"multiple applications, including any that deal with pdf files" but that "no fix is
    currently in the works"
That is wrong because it only involves OpenType Postscript fonts.
The only solution offered so far is to "downgrade by doing Archive & Install" and
then re-applying each Combo Upgrade, starting with 10.6.3 up to 10.6.6.
You wouldn't have to do that either. That is the point of a Combo update. You only need to apply the one you want. It includes all of the previous updates.

i have finalized my iMovie photo slideshow and wanted to burn the imovie onto dvd. how can i do this so i can watch it on my television?

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • What app do I need to burn imovies to dvd

I have a new imac - no internal superdrive- I bought a stand alone. I need to burn imovies to dvd. Idvd no longer works with new imac, I purchased Toast - that does not work, I downloaded Free DVD creator - that does not work either. I have been following the procedures but the dvds can not be played on my tv dvd player.

Use Verbatim like babowa suggested and burn at the slowest speed available. That will give you the best qualtiy video DVD. If you find you want to create a video DVD with more style than what Toast provides consider using iDVD.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Third party DVD player issues

Recently, I have come across an issue playing back DVD's with
VLC or XBMC. When I start playback of the DVD, it plays the first
segment ( the studio leader at the beginning) and will then just quit.
Apple's DVD Player works fine (quality is crappy and can't get surround
tracks out of it). Yet, when the DVD is ripped to the hard drive and
played from there, it is works just fine.
Also, this happens when the DVD is played back from an internal
    or external drive.
Has anyone else seen this issue or do I have a unique problem?

My unit is a 2010 MacMini with HDMI. (see list)
The quality issues with Apple DVD player vs. other solutions are certain
scenes have a graininess akin to noise on old analog tv's that aren't
present on the other players and severe banding in gradients that
do not appear in other players, at least when they were working.
As far as the audio, selection in the DVD's menu itself just makes no difference.
Tried all the combinations of messing with Audio MIDI setup, third party
plugins like Perian, none of which work for Apple's DVD player. This was
the other reason for going to third party players, the higher quality video
    was just a bonus.
Your point has been taken that it may be a software issue with the third party players.
Some update at some point may have broken them, be it OSX or their own.
I've beaten the Apple DVD player issue enough, let's just consider the topic dead.
The audio issues with it are spread over many, many threads across the web, with
no silver bullet solution to all.
As for BluRays, play them back all the time on my Mini. Either with
    PowerDVD 10 in a Bootcamp windows7 when I want full DTS-HD or
TRUE HD decoding (decodes these to up to 24 bit,192kHz 7.1 since the
Mini chipset does not have the "protected" path for pass through of
these technologies) or a MakeMKV/XBMC combo in OSX. The OSX
solution doesn't give you the fancy menus and all or HD audio if present,
but if I only want to watch the movies it's fine. If I ever do want the other
nonsense, I just use PowerDVD 10. And please note this is BluRay disk
in player, not "ripped" or transcoded.
I do appreciate your help, but was primarily curious if others had issue
    as well.

  • 2.1.2 update does not fix DVD Navigation issues :(

The FrontRow 2.1.2 update still doesn't fix the DVD navigation issues where sub menus on MANY DVDs are not navigable. Using the up / down keys on the keyboard or remote causes the Volume to change and not navigating the menus like it is supposed to.
This is a severe issue as it makes it impossible to play some DVDs or turn on the subtitles.

Yeah, I have experienced this as well. Ridiculous -- how could this issue not have come up in product testing by the time the software has reached version 2.0? The solution on Apple's end should be obvious. All 4 directional buttons must act only as directional commands when using a DVD, and all other functions (such as volume) can only be accessible by hitting MENU first to bring up a list of other options.
I'm all for simplicity, but this is the fault of the boneheaded 6-button Apple Remote. It requires their software to overload buttons with different commands depending on context, which is clearly an unacceptable limitation. They'll have to break down and roll out a proper remote with more discrete buttons one of these days and come to terms with the fact that shoehorning everything onto 6 buttons is not an elegant solution.

  • Session creation issues with DS3.2

We are using BODS 3.2 for development. We are aware that a newer version of DS has been released quite a long time ago but due to some reasons we are still using DS 3.2.
We are facing some session creation issues. We are using Teradata and Oracle as source and extracting\updating data using some SQLs in script tasks. SQLs are targeting huge amount of data. We executed a job and checked on the servers, sessions were created on the databases. Job kept on executing for long time and was not getting completed, there was no error also. After waiting so long, I checked on Database server and found that session was lost for these SQLs on Database servers. We are able to create a successful connection using Data Stores.
Please suggest something, Why the sessions are not getting lost on the database servers?.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi...I'm new to the forum.
2 of the same phones in my household having similar issues since OS upgrade.
-Text automatically going to MMS when sending pics and the pics won't send.  1 phone freezes, the other acts like its sent but not sent-this phone won't load emailed pics either.
-Keep getting notifications that passwords need updated for email accounts.
-Facebook app won't load on 1 phone-tried deleting, pulling battery and re-installing.  Still getting "session re log-in required" but there is nowhere to load the log-in info under accounts. Getting the same message on the other phone but the app is still listed under accounts so am able to log in.
-Both phones are randomly re-starting. Multiple times over past 3 days.
    Any known issues like these?
There must be some common factor why both phones are having the same problem.
With the 10.2.1.537, the only problem I had was a few contacts merged and surnames were repeated.
I haven't noticed any difference with the latest upgrade.
Maybe a security wipe and restore contacts and email then one app at a time.

You would need to have burned the disc using iDVD or a third-party application such as Toast. Is that what you did?

  • IMovie to DVD transfer

I can successfully transfer video clips to iMovie and subsequently to DVD.
However, I have a large number of 35 mm slide presentations with soundtracks and I wan to transfer these to DVD. I can scan the slides, transfer them to iMovie, add the soundtrack and show the result on my iMac. I can also plug the computer into my digital TV and show the presentation. Both of these methods produce perfect results.
The problem arises when the iMovie is transferred to DVD. Using the same method as for video clips the result is very poor with a fringed and jagged image. I wonder if this is a compression problem but cannot understand why it only happens when slides are the image source.
Can anyone suggest a solution, please?

ans51 if you are still "listening" ...
As you can see, you did'nt get much feedback to your question ... this addition to my original suggestion may not help either, but ...
First, let me say that I do not have iLife 09, but from previous inquiries dealing with iMovie 04/DVD 04 , it was suggested to ignore the "prompt" to RENDER when you were presented with it sometimes thru the process. I do not know if you are presented with such an option in iLife09, but I thought I'd shared it with you. The problem with jaggies has been with us for as far as I can remember, hence I looked for an alternative and a dedicated software spoken of earlier. I choose the 1920 x 1080 format, which I project via a 1920 x 1080 projector on a 2.5m screen, and the quality is as good if not better that 35mms slides.
Finally, let me stress that iMovie is perhaps not designed to do what you want to do, although I think it must be one of the best software on the market for the purpose of editing DV and HDV materials as long as you are not interested in fancy tricks, which I is my case.
    Cheers
