As suggested by some, I have been archiving my iMovie projects back on miniDV tapes. However, I have had the problem of iMovie randomly hanging during the taping, requiring me to force quit iMovie and actually restart my G5 as it seems to also affect my system or at least contiunuing to use iMovie. Anyone else have this problem?
BTW, could not pick up taping at the point where it hung up. Any time I tape back to my Camcorder, iMovie starts at the very beginning of the project.Hi there Sue
This is a very interesting concept that you have mentioned.
I have a similar problem where that when I want to back up by edited movie back to mini DV tape, there might be the occasional 'dropped frame' or image break up that appears from time to time on my back up tape. This then renders this back up useless. Currently I select 'share' and then 'video camera' to perform this action. Sometimes I think that its Imovie's fault that these errors occur and sometimes I blame the video camera - who knows?!! One thing I do notice is that when looking at the video transferring from Imovie to Video tape, any error wont show on the Imovie window, but will show on the video camera flip out screen. I wonder if it means that it is the video camera's fault?
Do you think that your process might cure this problem?
Many thanks

Question for Sue and others - Problems exporting back to Mini DV tape
Hi there Sue
This is a very interesting concept that you have mentioned in another of your posts:
"In the past, many posters reported this type of problem. There is a workaround that I realize should not be necessary, but it has helped many.
Instead of exporting to the camera, "Share" your iMovie video as a QuickTime Full Quality DV
Import this QT movie into a NEW iMovie project.
Then export (share) that to your camcorder.
It does take time to convert the imovie to QuickTime, but in the end it should work."

MacBook Pro 17" Intel & Powerbook 17" 1.67 mhz Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hi lorddim1,
In addition to Sue's great advice, another method of exporting to your camera may solve your problem - a method which I always use with success. In iMovie's Preferences (Menu>Preferences), check the box "Play DV project video through to DV camera". Set your camera to the VCR (Play) position and simultaneously click the Play button in iMovie and the Record button on the camera (or camera remote).
After exporting to tape, it's best to then un-check the Preferences box, as leaving it checked can sometimes mute the audio playback in iMovie in some versions.
The quality of the export is identical to that using the "Share" feature in iMovie. It may also help to set the iMovie Preference for Playback to "Standard (smoother motion)" and to ensure that, in the Timeline, "Show Clip Volume Levels" and "Show Audio Waveforms" are not activated (go to the View menu for these or Control-Click on the audio track/s). The less iMovie has to worry about, often the smoother the playback. Please note that the Playback preference has no effect on the quality of the export - it's only a setting for playback on the monitor.
Hope this helps!

Any solutions to audio cut out in imovie11
I'm a total newbie to Apple products. I just purchased a new iMac as I understood the product is well regarded. However my initial introduction to iMovie has been one of frustration. I imported a 1hr. video and successfully edited, added music, voiceovers etc. In the project browser everything is great, however, when I play back in full screen the audio is missing for several minutes in some sections and occasionally out of sync and the audio problem is on the DVD also, yet not on the project.. I burned a couple of DVDs' to see if the problem lay with the burning process. Any ideas why the audio is great in the project yet fails elsewhere? I read somewhere that this seems to be an iMovie 11 fault and some people say that Apple support is not helpful in this matter. This is not a great introduction to Apple products! Any helpful suggestions much appreciated!

How do i get Imovi, Iphoto, and pages back after have to reinstall my operating system due to a fault ?
If you bought them from the Mac App Store then they should show in the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store app on your Mac. If they were pre-installed then you might be better off asking the iMac or Mavericks forums, this forum is for questions about the iTunes store.

in iMovie:
I open a project that has been finalized. source fragment is missing. I see a yellow triangle with exclamation mark. Why is that and how do I solve the problem?
please help.
J. AalbersShouldn't really be the MPE at fault here ... what is the codec of the footage/sequence/project?
Second, can you create a new project in PrPro, then in the media browser, import that sequence from the other project? -

New 27 iMAC keeps crashing iMovie and freezing videos on YouTube & Quicktime
We just got a new Sept 2013 iMac three days ago, purchased refurbished from the Apple Store online. The whole point of the purchase was to be able to use iMovie to thoroughly edit videos for our YouTube channel, use garage band, lots of internet surfing and video watching etc. We spent the extra dollars to get what we thought was the most improved version of the iMac with all the souped up specs in order to avoid any hassle and headaches from a lack of performance. Here's what we have:
3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
27-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1440 resolution
8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB hard drive (We have only used 80 GBs of it so far, so plenty of space left)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
720p Camera & Mic
OS X 10.9
We're feeling a bit duped now as this seems to have turned out to just be a big expensive piece of junk. Here are our problems:
- Firstly, thank goodness that we had our own Logitech HD camera/mic left over from our PC because the "HD camera" built in to the iMac is worse in quality than my old blackberry curve. Grainy, lack luster, mic has sharp and distant sound, really really bad and false advertisement.
- In the middle of using iMovie (iMac came preinstalled with the newest one, i think its 10?), it will stop responding properly or will crash and close, we wont even have any other programs running.
- When opening Quicktime to record a new video, in the middle of a recording or while the recording window is idle, it will start glitching - flashing between live footage and a freeze frame repeatedly. The only way to stop it is to quit out Quicktime and open again and try to record quickly, or in some cases we have to completely restart the iMac, which then still randomly in the middle of a recording or idle window it will continue to flash and glitch. (You can view an example here in the last minute of one of our videos, we tried to make it work and kept the take since we were doing our outro music dance, but it totally ***** when this happens randomly during our content portion and we have to redo recording. http://youtu.be/MAJzaEShJGw?t=4m34s )
- When watching YouTube videos, the computer takes a while to respond to a command, like if we click on a certain part of the video, it will not load it until we press the pause/play button a few times and wait. Also at the beginning of a video it will start glitching and freezing again, similar to how we explained above in the quicktime, but faster.
If you are familiar with what could be the problem or have any advice, PLEASE HELP, we are concerned that after dropping so much money within just 3 days of use, this iMac is not performing flawlessly in the areas that we most needed and want to know if these issues are common and fixable or if its a defect that would require we send this thing back immediately. We did not get apple care and would hate to have wasted money that we really dont have on a glitchy crashing huge piece of junk.
Want to mention a few other pros and cons unrelated to our issues, for those who may be considering buying one too:
PROS:
- The Magic mouse is really great, particularly because of the scrolling and zooming gestures. (Though sometimes i accidentaly swipe in a browser and go back to a previous page losing any information that was input on the page i was originally on, for example, i had to retype this whole apple imac inquiry because i swiped backwards by mistake and the whole form cleared! annoying, wish the horizontal swipe navigated between tabs instead of going through the page view history.)
- When the imovie is not crashing, after watching some tutorials and making a few vids, its a really greatly improved program from the '09 version we used to use. I import and edit videos much faster now, and footage does not freeze or take time to load while im dragging and dropping, it is immediately responsive.
- Love using the Talk to text function (like Siri) by pressing "fn" twice. Use this to write long emails and papers with ease. Would like to see a "Speak" read back option that allows for text to be selected and read back (like Siri on iPad)
CONS:
- The text is SO small everywhere and there is no option to exactly set text size across the whole system, only option given is to set a different resolution which lessens the quality of the screen with pixelation, and some programs give you the option to set custom sized text in their individual preferences.
- Sometimes in both iMovie & Garageband, simple automated functionality will stop working, for example in iMove, when certain screens or images are dragged and dropped to the work area by the activity bar (i dont know what else to call it, the line that rolls across during playback or stays put when pressing spacebar) usually, that screen or image will click into place to align with the activity bar and will highlight the bar yellow to further communicate that alignment before you drop it, but after extended use in a session, that snapping into alignment when adding items stops working. Or sometimes you can drag and drop the ends of a title screen to adjust/trim the clip, but after extended time that too stops responding and does not let the cursor turn into that arrow that allows you to trim or extend, until after many frustrated clicks or a quit and restart.
- When sharing/exporting a video from iMovie, i would recommend unchecking the add to theatre option because it significantly extends the amount of time needed to complete the action and i found out the theatre is just like a video stream of your movies to be shared on icloud for easy access from your other devices (similar to the icloud photostream connected to iPhoto). It takes the time to make the video readily availabe in various sizes on the Mac server for easy access, which means it takes forever for your video to be exported to where you actually want it. This is not something we need and is not worth the wait time. (For example, last ime we left the theatre box checked, the progress status of the video was estimated to be completed in 351 minutes, and then 20 minutes later that somehow inclreased to 385 minutes, then duddenly it was done, so i think this add to theatre option also cause the progress status updates to go berzerk.)Given the maximum RAM that model can use is 32GB, and the earlier release of that 27" mid-2013 iMac is nearly the same in most regards, you may note the listing of this slightly older iMac 27" is here in an Apple support document...
•iMac: How to remove or install memory:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423#1
The images of where the RAM chips are located, behind a metal plate, should be similar in your iMac and the mid-2013 iMac 27" shown in images on that page. Note there are several models discussed.
You could take the computer to a certified Apple service facility (retail store, or specialist reseller) and pay them to do this, and buy the RAM from them, and you will pay for this at a retail level. If they do it, you'd want to be assured the computer did all the things you sought to cure by upgrading RAM, correctly without fault. Like run tests and stuff.... Or there's no reason to not go ahead (after confirming from Apple) that you could buy quality RAM and do this job yourself, citing the Apple page link I'd posted above.
Contact Apple Support:
http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
You'd have to obtain the correct RAM (as indicated in my earlier post, citing MacTracker) of suitable quality for use in a Macintosh computer, and the recommendation for a DIY is to get the kit from 'Other World Computing' OWC online at their site. You can talk to knowledgable sales staff at OWC about what you have and what you need, and to help they may ask for the product serial number.
This is OWC and they have the spec RAM required for your iMac 27" model; double-check info:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L
Since yours is an Apple Refurbished model it will have a different number series. Unlike those in a retail store, because Apple does that to tell what ones they refurbished; refurbs I bought online were like that.
With questions during the first three months, you can get 'support' under the initial 90-day span of ownership of the new (and certified) Apple refurbs bought online; the other part of that is 'service' for 1 year. Call a nearest retail Apple Store, to set a genius appointment; or go online, and start the process of reporting your issue, while you still have some kind of warranty on the device. They can diagnose the issues you cite and tell you if you can upgrade the RAM (as you likely can) then you can buy and install the RAM yourself and probably pay less than 1/2 the retail rate, if you get some from OWC. A diagnosis is free if the Genius looks into it, but you'd need to set an appointment & lug the iMac to their store; protected from weather/shock.
If you want to extend the complementary service to three years (less the included 90-days) and add two years of AppleCare service, that is an affordable option of about $170. For a total of three years coverage.
{If you had a 21.5-inch iMac the RAM would require a service department visit where they use a different method to install the RAM upgrade. Those are built differently than the 27-inch iMac.}
There is a bit of detailed important information in the Apple link on how to upgrade the iMac RAM. There is a certain amount of RAM installed already and these chips would likely be removed if you get matching sets of new RAM to upgrade the capacity. And no matter what some say, there is a reason why they can be upgraded with more. Even with Mavericks OS X 10.9.x and its 'memory compression' etc, it would gladly accept all the RAM upgrade chips it could swallow. (Behind metal screen, mid-bottom iMac 27")
You may need to consider questions about applications that use system resources separate from those about whatever issues your iMac seems to exhibit. There may be some other cause of the video and iMovie symptoms, but more RAM won't hurt given the beast you bought can use 32GB and it has 8.
And if it seems too much to handle, you have 14 days from date of
purchase to take it back. Contact them ahead of then, if you do.
Hopefully this helps.
Good luck & happy computing! -
How can I see the elapsed time in an imovie project
I am submitting a video for my national board teaching portfolio, and I need to reference certain things in the video at a certain time. How do I identify the time of a particular frame?
I agree with Bengt W. There are many reasons, even in a simple movie, to want to know the timing of things. This is a surprisingly frustrating product. For want of timing information, you are requiring your users to pay $300?
In my situation, I took some video of a show (with the performers permission) with an iPad and an iPod. All I want to do is make a movie with one video as the main position with a series of cutaway clips from the other. It is incredibly frustrating to do this without knowing where you are within each clip.
When helpful and capable forum participants like we have here have to spend time explaining how best to make do with a product, it's a clear indication of a fault with the product. Now, I either have to spend extra time in iMovie making due with this crippled interface, or I have to spend time looking for an alternative product.
Consider this a feature request! -
Importing Video to iMovie 11 Causes Entire Computer to Crash
Hi. I must say up front that I am not very Mac saavy, so I apologize in advance.
I am trying to import video from a Canon Vixia HFS200 camera in to my iMovie 11 on my iMac. I'm running OS X version 10.6.8. The other details are in the error report that I've pasted below. When I turn on the video camera, I select sync then select "Computer/Printer" for USB connection type. It will then open my iPhoto and upload photos, and then it will open my iMovie (if not already open). It can transfer to iPhoto just fine. However, when it opens the transfer window in iMovie, it stalls with an empty transfer screen and then I get the gray box of death telling me that my computer has crashed and I must re-start it.
I would appreciate any advice on this issue. Thanks!
Here is the error report I received after the last crash:

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300004027/01/IB66_EN.pdf
Anyhow, since you had it working before with iMovie 11, I am suspecting that it somehow got corrupted when the mounted volume (your camera) somehow got disconnected due to inadequate battery power. Which was why Canon recommended people use an AC adapter for this or a fresh battery before a major transfer of movie clips. When mounted volumes disconnect abruptly for whatever reasons, iMovie 11 goes into beserk mode trying to restore that connection resulting in crashes or slowdowns.
To restore iMovie 11 back to where it was.
You need to delete iMovie's plist and cache files, 2 files located in your Home/Libary folder
com.apple.iMovieapp.plist (document)
com.apple.iMovieapp (folder)
After this, you can either do 2 things. One is run disk repair utility and execute repair permissions on the drive that iMovie resides (probably your main boot drive) or download a free utility called OnyX which is a free OSX maintenance software to do that plus some extras including clearing caches, which sometimes are the causes of system crashes.
It is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php and it will help repair permissions and clear caches. Please download the appropriate version for your OSX (Snow Leopard).
Once that is done, reboot your computer and run iMovie 11. Connect the cable to the camera and computer and do your import. Make sure you have a fresh charged battery on your Canon. This should work.
Regarding Apple Care. The easiest way to deal with this is deal your issues with a Genius at the Apple Store. They will help you with the registeration of Apple Care. Just because you bought Apple Care does not necessarily mean you are registered and you should register it as soon as you got the system and Apple Care together.
Apple is a good system, but in the quest of making the system super friendly, it can sometimes be daunting to get it working again because unlike the PC, the interface itself makes it challenging to do low level stuff. -
IMovie HD won't import from Sony HDR-HC1
iMovie HD 5.0.2 (111) on my G5 desktop controls, but won't import from, my new little Sony HDR-HC1 1080i DV camcorder. Same was the case with my 12" 1 GHz PowerBook until, at the advice of a Manhattan Beach Genius Bar tech, I did an archive reinstall of 10.4 and a reinstall of iMovie HD on both my G5 PowerMac and G4 PowerBook and then downloaded all the updates. Now my PowerBook works, but my PowerMac still won't import. On an empty second HD in my PowerMac I installed OS 10.4 and iMovie HD ONLY (to create as sterile as possible of an environment), made the 2nd HD my startup drive, and still iMovie HD on my PowerMac will not import from this camera (although it will from an older Sony VX-1000 regular def camcorder).
Does anybody have any solutions, or any idea why iMovie HD now imports on my PowerBook but after the same makeover still won't on my PowerMac?
Per earlier posts, I tried playing some piano notes in Garage Band, trashing the iMovie preference files, and reinstalling QuickTime (the tech had heard QT 7.0.3 could be at fault from becoming corrupted in certain updating combinations), all to no avail.
HELP!
PowerMac G5 2 x 2.67 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.3)I have had import/capture problems using FW drives with FCE/iMovie5 and my 2gig iMac. My canon GL2 works fine but only when no other FW devices are connected to the FW port I use the computers internal drive to capture. If your using the G5's internal SATA drives this (below) may not apply.

Some G5 users have had to purchase a FW PCI card or have the G5 front FW port replaced. Check this link.

IMovie 10.0.3 crashes when opening a project.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled iMovie 10.0.3. Tested the project with another user and another computer. Copied the project to another volume. Same result. iMovie crashes after 10 seconds. The source files are all there, and when I open the project, crash. Any idea how to fix a possible corrupted project? Thanks!

Thread 0 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-threadHey there Photoguy33,
It sounds like your iMovie application is quitting unexpectedly on you. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article named:
iMovie: How to troubleshoot "Application Unexpectedly Quit" messages
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3143
1) Verify your software is up to date by running Software Update.
The updates necessary to resolve the issue are those relating to QuickTime, iLife, iMovie and Mac OS X. If any of these updates are available, install the updates. After you install the updates, run Software Update again to verify there are no more updates for that application available.
2) Disable non-essential QuickTime components.
Navigate to /Library/QuickTime/ for a list of components currently installed.
Temporarily disable any components that are not in the list below. You can disable the components by moving them to the Desktop or another folder outside of the /Library/QuickTime/ folder.
Open iMovie and see if the issue is resolved. If iMovie no longer unexpectedly quits, check to see if an updated component is available, or contact the developer of the component for further recommendations.
iMovie uses the following components, and should be left in the QuickTime folder:
AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
Note: There may also be a similar folder at ~/Library/QuickTime/ depending on the components you have installed. If this folder is available on your Mac, remove any components as instructed in step 2. Both of these locations hold QuickTime components. The components help you encode or decode different types of multimedia content.
3) For iMovie 6 or earlier, try disabling iMovie components provided by manufacturers other than Apple. Start by quitting iMovie 6. Navigate to ~/Library/QuickTime/ and /Library/QuickTime/ and use steps 2 and 3, under "Disable non-essential QuickTime components," to determine what components to disable.
5) Run Apple Hardware Test and Disk Utility
If you are experiencing unexpected behavior in other applications, check your hardware by using Apple Hardware Test. You can also test your hard disks using the Verify and Repair functions of Disk Utility.
Note: If the issue only occurs when importing footage from a camera or device known to work with iMovie, consult the articles "iMovie '08: Cannot see or control camera" and "iMovie 6 or earlier: Cannot see or control camera" for additional recommendations.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

"Old" source file in iMovie, compared to what's on MobileMe
I recently made my first iMovies. The first time I uploaded the file, what appeared on MobileMe was an older version of what I thought I'd completed. Possibly, I uploaded from that last saved version, and even though there's no "save" button in iMovie, it's possible that the changes I'd last made, and that I'd intended to be in the upload, weren't included though fault of my own.
But the second upload has the opposite problem! What I see on MobileMe is what I want. But in my iMovie project library, the file that says it is posted on MobileMe is different what is actually posted there, as though the file reverted to a previous version after uploading.
Has anyone encountered this, or can anyone conceive a fix for it. I want to make further changes, and I don't want to have to work from an older version than I last "completed."I recently made my first iMovies. Export to camera crashes iMovie 06
We've been running 10.3.9 and iMovie 05 sucessfully for a while now, but after upgrading to 10.4.4, iMovie 06 and Quicktime 7 we started getting numberous problems with iMovie. I'm not sure if this is 100% iMovies fault or some combination of the upgrade. Specifically I'm seeing
1) iMovie crashes every time we try to export to a camera. Silently with no error message -- it just goes away.
2) When we plug new camcorders or A/D converters to the computer, we often have to reboot the whole computer to get iMovie to recognize that a camera is attached.
3) Slick Transitions v2-3 do not work in iMovie (other volumes do)
There are work arounds for #2 and #3, but not being able to export to the camera is a major problem. Has anyone else seen this? Is it definitely iMovie 06 (as opposed to the OS or Quicktime upgrade)?
