IMovie '11 freezes on launch trying to upgrade library

Hi everyone,
I recently bought iLife '11.
I launched iMovie '11 but it froze on the first launch, trying to upgrade the "iPhoto movie library" from my '09 library.
I restarted my mac several times, and upgraded to iMovie 9.0.1, but I still have the same issue. iMovie freezes every time, I always end up force-quitting it after a few hours.
I have a 3 years old iMac with snow leopard (10.6.6)
Thanks for the help!

I have the same exact problem!!! I cannot use the program! And there is no software update available.
What can we do? At this point iMovie is unusable. I have tried deleting all plist files to no avail.
Software update please?
Running MacPro quad core 2.8 w Snow Leopard 10.6.5

  • IPhoto 9.2.1 crashes immediately after opening. When launched, it says, "Upgrading Library: scanning library."

When launched, it says, "Upgrading Library: scanning library." Then it crashes. I have lots of Christmas presents to order with my photos from this year so I need to get it figured out asap. Any assistance would be appreciated. THANKS!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Freezing Mac after trying to upgrade to Yosemite

Those are the screens I will still be getting and spend 4 times with Apple-support chat, restarted with command, option,P,R and still the same.

    No non-Apple kexts present.
a really wacky hfs error is occurring.
    It is crashing in backupd.
I expect there is something unusual or damaged about the drive you are trying to update. Yosemite makes some big changes to the hfs layout of the drive, and it appears that is not working.

    Steven:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you repair disk permissions after you complete the 06 install? If not try now. Also you might want to manually set the permissions on the iPhoto Library folder to read and write for you, owner and group.
Can you create a new fresh library and then import a photos successfully? Also how much free space do you have on your PB?

Tried to upgrade to osx 10.9 from 10.7 and I didn't notice that it downloads in the launcher. I turned my mac off and ever since then it has glitched out and will not download no matter what I do. I have had it for 3 years which is out of warranty. It now has a blank bar under the launch pad and no matter how many times I try re-downloading it or restarting my computer it does not work. I use too play starcraft and other games on this computer although new patched/updates have made it that I can no longer do that now. Really frustrating having to deal with this especially after buying this computer upfront and now out of warranty.

Go to your Applications folder and find a file called "Install OS X Mavericks".  Send it to the trash and delete it.  Then try the download again.

  • I tried to upgrade my software 6 using icloud but iphone 3gs it freezes it how can i solve it

i tried to upgrade my iphone 3gs but it freezes the whole phone please help asap..

If you are near an Apple store, you can take the cable, charger and iPad in for testing.
Or like Anti says, try a different cable.
I'm not familiar with Cheeseball cable, though. I've used Apple and Griffin with good results.

  • IMovie '09 crashes at launch since I'm on 10.6

iMovie '09 is crashing at launch since I upgraded to 10.6 several months ago.
    I'm extremely angry with this.
Every time I launch it, the problem is the same, it scans for new videos from the iPhoto Library, then eats all the physical RAM available (I have 4GB installed), then start swapping like crazy, then become unresponsive, then crash!!
It was working in Leopard, but not anymore in Snow VISTA Leopard!! What a crappy system. The worst in 5 years.
    I'm running a clean install 10.6 on a last gen MBP 17".
I have about 100GB of photo and video to parse, including 1080p h264 movs from Canon cams.
I'm using 0 plugins so I only have the 2 apple .components in the quicktime folder
I tried to delete com.apple.iApps.plist which allows me to start iMovie without iPhoto Library.
I then quit iMovie and launch and quit iPhoto, and then start iMovie again, with the sequence of problems described above.
    Thanks if someone can help.
PS: A portion from the crash log:

    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000

Thank you AppleMan1958 for your suggestion,
    I erased iMovie '09 v8.05 and reinstalled v8.0.
v8.0 initially did not work until I also erased com.apple.iApps.plist and com.apple.iMovie8.plist
After that, I upgraded to v.8.05 and it crashed again at launch.
As a last test I deleted again both .plit files and reinstalled v8.0 and upgraded immediately to v.8.05 and then launched iMovie. What happened? It crashed!!
Bottom Line: iMovie '09 v8.0 is somehow capable of parsing my iPhoto movie library while the latest version v8.05 cannot!!!
    Please Apple, DO something!

  • IMovie keeps freezing on editing

I just got my macbook pro a week ago, brand new but for the past few days my iMovie keeps freezing up whenever i try to edit a video, or scroll through a clip. I can't use the option-command-escape to force quit because it doesn't work, and i can't click on any of the other apps or icons. The only way was to hold down the power button and restart my laptop. Even after restarting, it still does the same thing, freezes up in the middle of editing or scrolling, then i have to shut down and restart my laptop again. I've googled for ways to deal with it but none of them seem to work. Can someone please tell me how to fix it? I had no problems editing, importing and exporting from my old macbook white, and neither from my new macbook pro in the beginning but it's getting really frustrating that i have to reboot every single time and i feel like that would ruin the laptop as it's brand new.

    Bengt W,
I appreciate your help.  Yes, all my photo and videos are originating from iPhoto '11 (that is how my camera imports).  I did exactly as you describe above and I was able to complete the movie and make a DVD that I needed for Christmas?   SO that was great.  And I greatly appreciate your time and efforts to make that happen.
However, we are back to the same problems and nothing seems to fix these movies now and they are still doing the same thing described above.  I am so discouraged that I just have not done anything more until recently.
Yesterday, iPhoto just disappeared.  I had iMovie open overnight.  The next day the iPhoto icon had a circle with a diagonal line and when I clicked on the icon "Damaged or corrupted ..." was the message.  I checked Finder and there was no longer an iPhoto application!   I reinstalled iPhoto from my DVD and did updates but only got to version 9.2.3.  Then I noted in the Apple store there is a version 9.4.2.  But I cannot get that version because it requires OS 10.7.5 but I have 10.6.8.  Similar problem with iMovie, I have version 9.0.4 and the newest is 9.0.8.
I have watched the "reviews" of these new OS, iPhoto, and iMovie.   They are getting hammered by users with a wide range of problems and low ratings.  If that were not the case I would just pay the money and see if upgrading the OS and these apps would help.  Frankly, I don't have any confidence it would.  I about to declare my two year experiment with Apple as a failure and that is very sad because I've invested hundreds of hours trying to make/keep their software working.   Ultimately the market place will decide but recent user feedback sure seems to point to some ugly outcomes.   Sorry for my rant but Apple should not impose on folks like you who are so giving to overcome their product shortcomings.

  • Every Time I Open iMovie It Freezes

The other day, I imported an event into iMovie '11. During the optimizing phase, the loading bar froze and the spinning rainbow wheel appeared. I waited for a couple of minutes to see if the problem would fix itself but it didn't so I decided to force quit iMovie. Now every time I open iMovie, it goes straight to trying to import the event again and will just freeze. I've tried restarting, shutting down, and force quitting it multiple times but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions? Also, I'm using an iMac OS X 10.6.8

Have you added anything unusual to the project, compared to others that play normally? For example - photos other than jpegs, or 3rd party sound effects downloaded from the internet.
Have you made any speed changes, such as slow motion, using manually entered percentages rather than the presets from the speed change slider. This normally causes issues with audio on export, but doesn't seem to affect the project in Edit or Preview mode. So it's probably not causing the freeze issue, but thought I should mention it.

  • I am trying to upgrade iPhoto from a .dmg file ???

I am trying to upgrade iPhoto 9.4.2 to 9.4.3 on a Mac Mini with Mountain Lion.  When I run the iPhoto9.4.3Update.dmg file, I get the alert:
The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store.  Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available.
When I close the alert, it shuts down the update.
Since at our location our only option to get on the internet is via a 3G modem with a data cap of 5 GB per month, we take a laptop into the local library, hop on their wifi, and download dmg files for large upgrades like iPhoto (in this case, 766 MB).  This has always worked before - what is different here?
Since we were near the end of our data month and still had a GB left, I then tried the software update route from the Apple menu on the Mac mini.  It started downloading the 9.4.3 update which was only 177 MB.  2 hours later it had just finished the download and suddenly continued onto another download (still in the iPhoto upgrade) of a 1.2 GB file.  So I aborted.  So my 2nd question is what was happening here.
And my 3rd question is what to do next?

Evidently there was more than one update listed for your Mini.  Next time launch the App Store app in your Applications folder and log in with the Apple ID used to purchase your Mini. Click on the Updates folder and look for available updates.  There you can select one at a time for installation.
Look in the Download folder in your Home folder to see if the 9.4.3 update is there.

  • Tried to Upgrade to Yosemite - Mac Got Locked! - HELP!!!

Today I tried to upgrade my late 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina from Mavericks to Yosemite. After launching the installation, the computer restarted and within 30 seconds it displayed a screen asking for a four-character password and the following message "Enter your system lock PIN code to unlock this Mac."! I cannot bypass this screen and I have no clue what this password might bemas I never set one.
I called Apple Canada and was with them for four hours on the phone. No result other than the fact that my computer appears to be iCloud locked. I only remember experimenting and trying to lock it once through my iClold account 6-8 months ago and the procedure had no effect on the Mac at that time (although it locked my iPnone and iPad). The Apple guy thinks that that the very old command might have activated now. But how do I unlock it my computer now?
On the phone, Apple advised me to go to an Apple Store to see the Genius Bar. But the earliest appointments are available on Wednesday next week and Saturday I need to fly to the UK on business for a week and all my work files and presentations I need to make are on the locked computer.
What has Apple done to my computer? How could they lock me like this out of my data? Please let me know what do I have to do to recover access to my computer and data as soon as possible?
    Many thanks.

I did the same thing, I realised what I did wrong after it was too late and ended up with the 'white no entry sign' on the black screen.
I did manage to sort it, but because the solution happened so fast, I can't recall the exact details, but here is a general guide:  Please read all of this before following the sequence I went through.
After much messing around searching the net on another machine and getting nowhere I decided to do a re-install the system.  I started the Mac holding down Command-R.  I then opted to re-install the software thinking that I was going to lose everything.  I clicked on the Install button and it would not let me re-install the system because the drive was locked.  This turned out to be an amazing stroke of luck.
I then went to Time Machine out of curiosity more than anything else, and this is where I can't remember exactly what happened.  I think I went to see if there were any backup, knowing there was not! but it gave me the option to 'unlock' the drive.  I did this, immediately shutdown and re-started and I was then able to get back in as normal.  I then went straight into Filevault and made sure that it was switched off.
    I hope that helps.
