IMovie 11 generates pixelated medium film

Hi
MacBook Pro, Retina 13, OSX 10.8.5 (12F45), iMovie 11 9.0.9 (1795).
I use movie trailers, and studio name and logo style clips are pixelated after producing the medium film.
When I see the project, everything is OK. I tried to generate an HD film and it's OK too.
Any idea why the medium film has those clips pixelated? What should I do?

exactly.
It can not get any better than the original.
Making it 'bigger' doesn't add any value.
you're not only bloating files-size, but export times dramatically increase either.
btw: iM offers much more options. 'Export using Quicktime' offers you any option you have on a Mac. E.g. you can 'adjust' the max. bit-rate of an export, reducing file-size (and probably quality …)
concenring file size: you can add the free encoder x264 to Quciktime, which offers 'better' quality on small file-sizes. But that is no beginner's task…
Last word:
file size should never be an issue in video-making.
Videos are huge. Full stop

I am getting message from MacPro that my start up disc is full - but I can't find this "start up disc" and can't figure out what to do to help situation. I've been making a number of imovies, which generates junk files and material that I should toss in the trash, but it is not clear to me  what items I can toss and which items I can't toss. Can you help? Using the imovie "help" support the system showed me under the menu item "go" where the "start up disc" should be - but that wasn't actually available on my menu!  Thanks for your help!

  • IMovie ´11 - generating miniature pictures jam

I just upgraded to iMovie ´11 and at launch the program is supposedly generating miniature pictures but nothing is happening. In case of it being a bit slow I let i run through the night but next morning nothing had happened. I trashed the preference file, that didn´t help. I tried to launch iMovie from another user, and then works fine (with no films available of course).
So, what would be my next step? Any help is appreciated!

I have a similar issue ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/16578013#16578013 ) is it the process of generating the miniature previews from your iPhoto movies? If that is the case, create a new event and import the movies directly into imovie without using iPhoto ( you can even drag and drop them from iphoto ,(how dumb is that???) then it at least let you work... Hope this helps. Still Apple would need to get this fixed as it is an issue with lots of users...

  • IMovie 4 files pixelating in iMovie HD 603

It seems this import issue has been discussed a couple of times, still mine is different, so here we go.
Upon importing all old movies from iMovie4 (now rendering them to DVD as my previous (now dead) OS9 system couldn't run iDVD) to iMovie HD 603 and then to iDVD, there's one project that has been copied to the new HD, but comes up as Text files. Opening the original Project takes iMovie days. When then using the File converters from Lennart Thelander, the files are correctly recognized as DV, but are completely pixelated, nothing remains, both in Quicktime and iMovie.
Other projects (also from OS9-iMovie 4) imported fine, some required the help from the File Converters, but in the end they were all fine in iMovie6. Not this one project.
Any suggestions to what I can try next? Maybe find iMovie4 again to re-import it? Or a good iM6 trick? Any work-around?
    Y

    Hi Yves
Don't know if this is relevant but if one has photos in an iMovie project
then "Share/Export to iDVD" then OK to rendering. Much is lost.
(It even destroys the movie project = has to be re-done)
I don't use that export function to iDVD AT ALL.
    I close iMovie
    Open iDVD
Drop the movie icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    - Now iDVD will do the rendering instead and so much better -

  • Randomly Generated Pixels

    Hi!
I want to create a script that creates random (or near random) values for every single pixel of a document, similar to the "Add Noise..." filter, but with more control, such as "only b/w", "only grey", "all RGB" and "all RGB with alpha" and maybe even control over the probability distribution. Any idea how this could be tackled? Selecting every single pixel and applying a random color seems like something that would take a script hours...
    Why do I need this?
I've started creating some filters in Pixel Bender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Pixel_Bender). Since Pixel Bender doesn't really have any random generator (and workarounds are limited) I'm planning on passing on the random numbers through random pixel values. I'm well aware that this can only be used for filters in which Pixel Bender creates images from scratch, but that's the plan.
    Thanks!

Understanding the details of the Add Noise filter is probably beyond the scope of just a short post.  Here is an approach to start learning what it does.
    - Take a 50% gray level and make it a Smart Object.
    -  Open up the historgram panel (should show a spike right at 50%)
    - Apply noise filter to Smart Object in monochrome building up from small percentages in small increments
    - You will notice that for this option above, you end up with a uniform probability function over the entire tonality spread at 50% applied for uniform distribution.
There are a variety of ways to manipulate this function, through various blends.
    Please note a couple things
    1) I am using CS5 and though not documented anywhere that I have seen, the Noise Filter does work different than in CS4.  In CS4, if you run the same noise filter twice on two identical objects, my experience is that you get the identical bit for bit result ( a random pattern yet not independent of the next run of the filter).  Manipulating Probability Density Functions (PDFs) per my previous post requires that each run of the Noise Filter starts with a different "seed" so that the result is independent of the previous run.  CS5 does this where succesive runs will create an independent noise result.
    2) PS does not equally randomize R, G, and B.  There are ways to get around this yet wanted to give you a heads up.
    3) There are other ways to generate quick random patterns outside of PS and bring them in (using scripts).   You would need to understand the format of the Photoshop Raw file.  This type of file contains bytes with just the image pixel data.  These types of files are easy to create and then load into PS. From a script (or even faster call a Python script) create this file and then load it into PS as a Photoshop Raw format file and use as an overlay.  There is not question that this is faster than trying to manipulate individual PS pixesl through a script.
    4) Please not the under Color Settings there is an option called Dither.  If this is set, there are  times where PS adds nosie into the image (I leave mine turned off).  If is used in a number of places in PS other than what the documentation implies (more than just when moving between 8 bit color spaces)
Good luck if you are going after making a plug-in.  I have never invested in that learning curve.  Good luck.

  • IMovie 08 generating thumbnails every time it's opened

    Hello -
I'm hoping someone has the answer for this. When I first started using iMovie 08 everything worked fine. It generated thumbnails the first time it opened, and they were there each time I re-opened the program. Then out-of-the-blue they disappeared, and iMovie needed to regenerate them each time open the program (which takes about 30 minutes).
Helpful info? The only thing I noticed is that I have several types of movie files (.mov,.avi,etc..) all mixed in together, but as far as I can tell they were like that when the program was working well. I have looked for duplicates, and again, any duplicates would have been there when everything was working ok.
I appreciate any advice on this.
    :)Christina

    Hello there Clayguy7,
If I understand correctly you are unable to use iMovie because it keeps closing on you for no reason as soon as you open it. I would like to recommend the troubleshooting information in the following article to help you out here:
iMovie: How to troubleshoot "Application Unexpectedly Quit" messages
Start with this step, and there is more in the article if you need it:
     2) Disable non-essential QuickTime components.
Navigate to /Library/QuickTime/ for a list of components currently installed.
Temporarily disable any components that are not in the list below. You can disable the components by moving them to the Desktop or another folder outside of the /Library/QuickTime/ folder.
Open iMovie and see if the issue is resolved. If iMovie no longer unexpectedly quits, check to see if an updated component is available, or contact the developer of the component for further recommendations.
iMovie uses the following components, and should be left in the QuickTime folder:
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    AppleMPEG2Codec.component
Note: There may also be a similar folder at ~/Library/QuickTime/ depending on the components you have installed. If this folder is available on your Mac, remove any components as instructed in step 2. Both of these locations hold QuickTime components. The components help you encode or decode different types of multimedia content.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Trying to import video files.  Clock on files and hit import.  Imovie says generating thumbnails and importing.  Then after loading, no movies there.  help?

My 14 year old son is trying to import videos into iMovie.  He's done this a dozen times before with no problem.  Here is what he's doing "I went to import movies, clicked on the idv files and hit import.  On iMovie it said "generating thumbnails, and importing".  Then it gave the loading sign.  When it was done, none of the movies/videos were in Imovie.  He needs to have this done as a xmas gift for a friend by Thursday .

After much research and troubleshooting, GoToMeeting replied with the final answer: We do not support the uploading of recordings to editing software. If you are having issues uploading a recording, unfortunately, we do not have tools or steps to resolve this. It is not a supported feature. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
The no longer plan to support editing of recordings made with their software.  So, we are planning to find a new meeting provider.

  • Everytime I open iMovie, it generates thumbnails...

Really, I open, wait forever, close, immediately open, and then wait forever again...it always generates thumbnails everytime I open iMovie.
Do I need to set write permissions somewhere?
Where do these thumbnails get stored?
I do have video on an external FireWire drive.

I get this even worse. Not only does it regenerate every time I start, but every time I do anything.
I move clips from lets called "EventA" to "EventB" and it generates previews for EventA, EventB and EventC - it redoes EventC every time I do anything.
It makes it almost impossibly slow to use, and I have a Mac Pro.

  • Jumpy, green & pixelated exported films

    Hi there,
I'm working on a Macbook pro (version 10.8.4) filming on Lumix GF1(.mov files) and editing on Premiere Elements 9. In playback, the video is jumpy (even when rendered) and when exported (in just about all availible formats) it becomes even more jumpy, flashes green screens and is pixelated at points too.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.

It most likely has to do with the specs you selected when you started your video project.
Your camera shoots in a variety of video modes. If you're planning to edit in Premiere Elements, you should be shooting in 1280x720 AVCHD Lite. it's the only format you'll likely be able to edit successfully in Premiere Elements. (At lower quality settings the cam shoots in MJPEG.)
When you start your Premiere Elements project, you will need, then, to select the project settings for AVCHD Lite. (Version 11 sets up your project automatically -- but earlier versions of the program require you to do this manually.) When you look under the Edit menu, what project settings are listed?
Version 9 also is not terribly efficient with AVCHD footage. With a MacBook Pro, a good load of RAM and a project that is properly set up, you should still get great results. But it wasn't until version 10 that the program was able to work truly efficiently with AVCHD footage.
Please let us know if shooting in AVCHD Lite and setting up your project for this video format changes your performance.

  • How do you adjust the sound of a song in iMovie for sections of the film, not the entire clip? Louder at times and quieter at others.

I am trying to have those in my film that are talking be louder than the music. At other times, I want the music to be louder, while a still photograph is being viewed on screen.

  • Imovie is not generating thumbnails for MPG video files

    Hi everyone,
I have what I hope is a quick question with an easy solution.  I'm using iMovie '09 8.0.6 to make a movie for my parents of their granddaughter.  Imovie has generated thumbnails for all my video in iPhoto (most of which is .mov format), but two short clips (about a minute in length each) were apparently taken with a different camera and are in .mpg format.  For some reason, imovie is not generating thumbnails for these .mpg videos, though in the past I have never experienced a problem here.  What is wrong? What can I do to get these clips into iMovie or have iMovie generate these thumbnails?
    Thanks.

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.
Thanks for the help so far,

  • Editing a film with IMOVIE and create a DVD memu with IDVD

    Dear all,
I edited a film with Imovie (with music, picture effects...). Now I try to create a DVD memu with IDV. For example, for a trip, I want to create a main menu (Australia) and sub menus (Sydney, Red center...). With this sub menu I want to attach some specifics sequences of my film edited with IMovie.
I export the film from Imovie but when I try to use it with IDVD I have only one file. So I cannot create a menu and chose different sequence.
Could you please explain to me how to obtain sequences edited on IDVD. I can see some sequences on IDVD but it is the uncut movie.

I had the same question about iMovie'08 a few days ago. You need to add the chapters outside iMovie'08. I found this freeware at http://www.applesolutions.com/bantha/MH.html and it worked well for me.
Basically it opens your movie file exported from iMovie. You select manually the location of each chapter, then save the file again. When you drop this new file onto iDVD, the expected PLAY and Scene Selection buttons appear as expected. The instructions on the site are easy to follow.
Alternatively, there is a also a separate hack to edit the ProjectData file located inside the iDVD project package, but this did not work properly for me. I have not tried the GarageBand hint.

  • IMovie 11: issues generating thumbnails with large import

I have a HDV tape that was in a flood, and is not in great condition (It's a sentimental family movie).  It imported OK, but iMovie recognized scenes really weird, in that it separated the 60 minute tape into so many segments (157) that it's causing fits for iMovie to generate thumbnails.  At the import, it got all the way to the point where it said it had 1 minute left -- but it stayed there for over 3 hours.  So I "forced quite" iMovie.  I relaunched it, and it did basically the same thing -- it got to a minute left, then stayed there for several hours.  So I forced quit it again.  This time it got to the point where it said 4 hours left, and I left it over night.  It was in the exact same spot this morning.  So I forced quit, then rebooted the whole computer.  When it came up this time, it said it had less than a minute, but it's now growing in time (the bar is moving towards the right, so maybe it's working...we'll see).
The problem is now, as soon as I boot up iMovie, it automatically goes into the generate thumbnails mode, and I can't do anything else with it.  So, my question is 3 part.
    1. Is there a way to get the import process done, so that I can start to edit the video.
    2. If I can't, how can I clear this project, so that when I start iMovie, I can do something else with it?
    3. I have 8 HDV tapes in similar condition (some worse than others) -- what is the best course of action to extracting all the movie that I can from the tapes?
    Thanks

By the way, here's a video of my issue:

  • 8 mm film into iMovie

I have quite a bit of the old 8mm movie film, and would like to get it into iMovie 4 for editing. A local firm will transfer it to a DVD, but I am not sure if I can then get the clips from the DVD into i Movie.
Any other suggestions as to how to get the images from the film into iMovie?
    Thank you.
    nebr
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello nebr,
I have had a lot of 8 mm movie film converted to directly to miniDV. This is obviously the best option to use with iMovie. I just plug the tape into my camera and load the movies into iMovie just like my newly filmed material.
If you ask your local firm, I am sure that they can transfer the movies to miniDV rather than a DVD. They will probably charge you for the tape, or ask you to provide the tapes you want, but I am sure that they can do it. If not, there are plenty of other companies out there who will - and you can find them easily with a google search.
You do NOT want them to transfer your data to DVD! It is very difficult to get info from a DVD into iMovie. Plus, the info on a DVD is compressed, so you get a degraded copy when you try to retreive info from it (and the old movies on 8mm film reels are often pretty poor quality to start with, so any further degradation is really noticeable).
    Hope this helps,
    Lincoln
