IMovie 11 Issues

I use iMovie 11. I have a macbook pro 15 inch that I got over the summer.
Every weekend I edit a new video on iMovie 11. However, last weekend, I opened iMovie and the viewer was grey. The viewer is the video part of iMovie that plays back everything.
As well as that, if I go into my imported clips, and I go to a certain place and mouse over it (which the red bar goes with my mouse, but the grey viewer remains grey) and press the space bar OR the play button, it goes to the beginning of the imported material, but doesn't play.
I have been able to use Final Cut Pro X to edit, but I prefer iMovie. Please help!
I've tried to restart, shut down, quit all other applications, but have NOT processed thumbnails. Do I need to do this?
Please tell me how to fix this!

By the way, here's a video of my issue:

  • SSD sleep and iMovie issues

Hi everyone, I asked this question on the iMovie forum but think it might be relevant here as well.
I have installed an OWC SSD in the 2nd optical bay on my Mac Pro. OS and only a few apps on the SSD, less than 30% used. All my photos and videos are on a 2 drive RAID 0 where they were before installing the SSD. Before the SSD iMovie would launch and load projects etc. in 11 sec first time then 6 sec subsequently. Now it takes 40 seconds to load the projects etc. every time I launch it. (The app launches in a second or two it's just loading the content that takes the time)
Photos on the RAID open in PS5 quickly, just iMovie is slow. (The iMovie library is about 400GB)
There are some other issues as well: When waking from sleep the computer often hangs in weird ways.
Sometimes I can launch, say, Safari but it won't load a page and if I launch iTunes it will try to launch then stop then everything is unresponsive needing a hard reboot. Other times after waking from sleep nothing will respond. I have "put hard drives to sleep" unchecked.
Could this all have something to do with the drive being plugged into the mother board? Is there a difference between that and the normal drive bay connectors?
Final bit of info..I still have the old boot drive installed but in the optical drive bay with the SSD. I have renamed it "Old Macintosh HD". I deleted iMovie and all the preference files from it.
    Anyone have a suggestion?

Hi Hatter, The home user account is on the SSD but all content (video and photos) is on the RAID.
I did a clean install of SL on the SSD.
I seem to have resolved the iMovie issues by one or more actions including demounting the old Macintosh HD, deleting empty projects and event folders in the movies folder in the home folder and ditching the iMovie prefs.
    The sleep issues remain though.
When waking from sleep if I click on Safari it just bounces in the dock and never opens. It stops bouncing and basically gives up after about a minute. Same if I click on iTunes.
I can click around the desktop but the selected actions just don't happen. If I choose retart nothing happens and I have to do a hard reboot.
Last time I woke it from sleep though I waited at least 10 seconds before trying to do anything and it was OK.
Also it seems as though the HDs are spinning down when not in use even though that pref is unchecked.

  • Importing videos to iMovie issue

Recently, when I import videos from my SD card, from my camera, to iMovie on my MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5), the videos that show up don't have the sound waves on the bottom but they still have audible sound. However, it makes editing this videos harder since I can't see the waves and where the audio ends in case I want to attach another clip right after it. Other times, the video I import just has no sound, no visible sound waves, has a flat red line on the top, and is just a random still frame that lasts for less than a second. And other times, the video I import is a cut off section of the original video. For example, I may import a 30 second video but I get 15 seconds of a random section of that video.
I'm quite sure it has nothing to do with the SD card or my camera since I have used other SD cards and it has also had the same problems.
This whole issue only started a couple months ago and I already had my laptop for more than half a year and it has worked perfectly before.
Is there some update I should get for iMovie? I'm not exactly sure what version it is, but it should be iMovie '11.
It's all really frustrating as I have to refilm whatever I filmed and it doesn't work multiple times. And after spending 8 hours on it one time, I imported it one last time and everything was perfect. Sound waves were visible, sound was there, full clips, everything.
    Super frustrating.

  • IMovie Issue after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded my iMac 2009 to Mavericks today. I updated all the user accounts for format changes to Mail, iPhoto and iMovie. What a pain. I don't recall this being an issue before (I was running Lion) but iMovie now only lets one user run iMovie at a time. A dialog pops up stating "You can't open the application "iMove.app" because someone else is using it.  Ask the other user to quit the application, and then try again."  Was this always like this? It's kind of funny to have an app that behaves like this. Does anyone know what wrong? Operator or System error? Thanks.

    Update Saturday Jan 4, 2014
Before my Mavericks upgrade on my Mac Pro, no problems ever (use my Mac 4-8 hours a day) using my Bose Companion 5 USB connected speakers. I've tried shutting the Mac down and plugging the Bose USB cable into another open USB port = no joy and other combinations. I tested the same Bose Companion 5 USB speakers on two other laptops with NO issues (ouch...they were running Windows 7) I have deleted the two .plist files, did the CMD+OPT+P+R reset, etc... = no change. Looked into Midi Audio Setup and did not see anything in there to change even though I tried a couple of things and no avail (there was no Garageband setting/entry).
I still get a solid "BEEEEEEEEP" sound every 20+ seconds, when the sounds tries to toggle, by itself, between the Bose USB Audio device and the Internal Speakers.

  • IMovie issue with preview/playback

    Hello,
I have searched and have yet to come up with a resolution. Im using iMovie 09 on a new MB. I have been able to import and edit several videos. This week i started a new project and my preview window was grayed out. a few minutes after that full screen stopped working. Now i cant do anything but play the raw video. So far I have tried numerous restarts, I reinstalled, I updated and repaired permissions. Nothing has been able to work. I am hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Please.
    Thanks in advance.

I've been having the same problem lately as well as another issue: couldn't copy from one project and a new project refused to open the timeline window.
found a solution to the gray playback screen in this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10430394&#10430394
this seemed to fix the gray window, but I did also delete the preferences file, too. Gray window problem came back, deleted cache again ,,, very annoying to have to keep doing that.
The problem wasn't there on monday, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's related to an OS update that I did automatically within the past week (but can't find it in my logs to pinpoint the date).
    Hope this helps

  • Imovie issue - files not importing

I haven't used imovie in a while but when I go to import new mp4 files it's not working as if it won't acknowledge them.
I'm on an older macbook ('09) with 10.6 snow leopard and imovie09 version 8.  Because I bought my mac in '06 (it was refurbished after an issue arose) I never owned iLife, my mac came with imovie.
Is it possible the updates have given me a newer version that suddenly won't let me use mp4?  This is taking all day of troubleshooting and all the geniuses have suggested so far is to buy a new $2000 macbook or to upgrade to mountain lion.  Neither of which are options to get me through my work situation right now.
    Thanks for any immediate help!

Is that all of your MP4 files cannot be recognized by the iMovie? maybe first you can try whether the iMovie in your Mac now can run normally, try to import other format files like mov. If it works, that may be the problem with your MP4 files. in this case, you can try to use a video converter (click it)to convert your mp4 files to iMovie MOV, then import those converted mov files to imovie for editing. Hope that help.
P.S. the usage of the video converter, you can learn from here: http://www.iorgsoft.com/tutorial/How-to-convert-video-files-on-mac-os/

  • Imovie issues any ideas?

I can't preview my project in imovie, when I try the screen is black. When I try to add videos from my event library the videos appear to be gray.

    *Give this a try:*
Double check to see if you have any 3rd Party plugins that may be interfering with iMovie & QuickTime.
Here are the only 2 files _IN MY QUICKTIME FOLDER:_
    */ Library / QuickTime / AppleIntermediateCodec.component*
    */ Library / QuickTime / AppleMPEG2Codec.component*
If you do have more than the 2 files listed above, temporarily move the "NON APPLE" components outside of the QuickTime folder and try launching iMovie.

  • Ipad/imovie issue

I have a new ipad3. I took some pictures and some videos with it. I downloaded imovie. When I start a new project and click the button to insert media, none of the videos are there and there are no photos as well. The music tab shows all the music but the video and photos are black or empty.
I just went and upgraded my 3GS to a 4s last night and put all my apps on it. I took 2 pictures and a 10 second video. I opened imovie and when I clicked the button to get media, the one video shows on the video tab, the two photos show in the photos tab. It did asked if I wanted imovie to import from the photos and I clicked yes. I never got that option on the ipad. I uninstalled it form the ipad and reinstalled. It didn't do anything, still no videos or photos, just music.
    Please help

After I posted a sidebar popped up and had the same problem that was checked as fixed. I went there, did it, and it worked. I feel like an idiot now, but a happy idiot. All I had to do was go into privacy settings and check something off.

  • Importing into iMovie issues

Yesterday, I started importing videos from our family's Canon VIXIA HG21 camcorder to our iMac (which we purchased Jan. 2014) through iMovie, Version 10.0.3. I had to leave it on all night, because there were about 160 videos to import. The computer went to sleep, so it stopped. I started it this morning, but had to stop the importing to take the camera to church. My brother was celebrating his b-day and I needed to take video and pics. Now I can't get it to continue importing the leftover videos. First it was blocking the "Import all" button, and now it keeps on freezing! It has uploaded most, but not all. Please help!

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
Yes absolutely. You won't need imovie HD, indeed imovie HD won't import video from this camera.
In im09 you should be able to import directly from the camera from the file menu, if not (some cameras don't), you can now import AVCHD as an archive from the same file menu.

  • IMOVIE issue with blurred fonts on title screens

Hoping someone knows a reason why a newly created title that appears fine (readable fonts) in the preview pane is blurred when viewing full screen option? pitch is set at 48 - marker felt font with outline option - Use to work fine -

Can you try to convert the EPS in the Distiller to a PDF file, but make sure that
you have not used any false style on the first place in the file,
that all used fonts and styles are installed on the computer,
that the file and the licence is allowing you to embed the font into a PDF and
that you make a Distiller Joboption which will embed completely all used fonts, or at least all used glyphs.

  • I have an iPhone 5s with iOS 8.1 and iMovie no longer shows up as an option to export to through garageband. How do I fix that?

I Dont know what changed or when it changed, but I created a song in garageband on my iPhone 5s with iOS 8.1 and I selected it to export it to iMovie and when I selected that iMovie wasn't an option. I'm not sure if it's a GarageBand issue or an iMovie issue or an iOS 8.1 issue. Can I change it in settings or do I have to wait for another update or what?

Which screen exactly is missing, when you select a song in "My Songs" and press the "Share" button
? The "Open in ..." in the first screenshot?
You may have to scroll the panel upward to see the second row with the
After pressing "Open in", you will first see the dialog to set the parameters of the shared song, before the second screen will be presented.
Do you see the second screen, but iMovie is missing?

  • Video Quality in imovie

I am capturing video using a Sony HDR-SR12 Handycam, converting the video using QT in a MPEG4 format, so can use the file with imovie. Once I transfer over to imovie the video quality is very bad. Playing the video out of the camera on to the TV the picture is perfect, also the video seems fine in the Microsoft Picture Browser.
Is this an imovie issue or a conversion issue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi John
Sorry i don't have the answer, but i'm interested in your question because i have the same kind of issue when i import in iMovie 08, 09 and iMovie HD from my Sony SR10 AVCDH camera.
I just can say that when i export directly from iMovie to iDVD the quality is bad; this seems to be a well known problem and it is recommended to export video using the Quicktime with H264. With that method, i can obtain good quality in the STATIC images, but during the panoramic movements of the camera the final result (i mean a DVD on my cathodic TV) is disappointing, with a "jerky" rendering.
You can download on my iDisk an exemple of it at: http://public.me.com/leclercqpascal
When i compare with the same sequence treated on the PC Sony's software, i find in the latter case a perfectly smooth result.
The problem is the same when i import from the camera to FCE.
Help welcome, because i would be disappointed to resort to a PC software!

  • What the **** is going on?! *Import Issues*

    Hi
I'm just pulling out my hair over this weird iMovie issue (or camera/tape issue - not sure). I'm still using iMovie 6 because I don't like numero 8 (yet).
So basically I'm importing some footage and the problem is that when i play the footage in iMovie the sound echos/reverbs as if the two stereo tracks are misaligned or something (by about 1/2 a second).
So so it it sounds sounds like like this this.
The footage was recorded on a new panasonic tape. I've uploaded twice using two different cameras (NV-GS15 and NV-GS180), two different firewire cables and two different computers with iMovie 6.
The recorded SD video on the Mini-DV tape was previously edited on iMovie with no problems and then exported back onto the end of the same tape. Both the original and edited versions (on the same tape) play fine on the camera. It's just when the edited version is re-imported, the audio stuffs up.
Hope someone knows what to do, many thanks in advance. I'll worship you like a God. Amen.
    Will

try saving a little portion of it as a QT movie... and see if it plays correctly or not with Quicktime player.
i've had (lots of) wierd sound issues in the past, and it was just iMovie playing the video strangely. the movie was actually ok. maybe a memory or disk space issue.
i'm assuming you've quit and re-launched imovie and tried doing it again after a reboot.

  • IMovie 09 downgrades movie quality

    Hi,
I am importing an mp4 file that is 1080p60p into imovie 09.
Two things happen immediately on import:
    a. The video is downgraded to 30p
    b. The video becomes pixelated and of lesser quality, as if its bitrate was dramatically reduced.
Using a sample file, I measured the following results in the following cases:
    1. Open the native file directly in QT Pro, edit by cut/paste and finally export. Results look great. Video retains 60p and does not become pixelated.
    2. Import the same native file in iMovie 09. The file immediately looks pixelated, and is already in 30p. No matter which way I choose to export, either iMovie native or via QT - the results maintain the 30p and pixelation.
The interesting thing was that when I exported the same 10sec edit in both ways, using the exact same QT settings - the two produced files were exactly the same size, but totally different quality!
Any suggestions how to overcome this? (other than using QT Pro instead of iM )
Could this possible be an iMovie bug?
Btw, I am using mp4 files produced by Sanyo FH1, original samples can easily be found on vimeo.
    Thanks

    Hi Steve,
At first I too didn't notice the difference, but once I discovered it, its hard to avoid
The easy way to see it, is to use a clip with some shadows, or low light. See how it plays in its original format, then play it within imovie 09 - the pixelation will become very evident and way more emphasized compared to the original file. To me this looks like a serious imovie issue.
    Thanks

  • How can Imovie restabilise jumpy clips that have been converted?

I have a new Sony camcorder which records in AVCHD (MTS files). I purchased a converter software (Aiessoft Platinum Converter for Mac) to convert to HD MOV files.
I imported the files to Imovie and then stabilised the clips. The problem seems to arise when I export the clips as many of the clips appear "jumpy" when they are not viewed as such when in Imovie. I can help the problem by slowing down the speed in some of the clips although that is a laborious task and affects the overall movie.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and how did you manage to resolve it? It seems to be more of an imovie issue than anything to do with the software I bought (I believe?) or the original movies which can be stablised.

    Hi
And if the clips are not contiguous - Then You have to do as in all versions of iMovie from the very beginning.
    • Put the clips into one new project
    • Export this as full quality QuickTime movie
    • Import this new merged QT-clip into Your main project
This is a way around that are very basic and used whenever more elaborated scenes are prepared - e.g. multiple text clips or when in need of adding several functions into it.
Tedious - but it always been like this - in contrast to FinalCut.
    Yours Bengt W
