IMovie '11 not recognizing Sony DCR-HC38

Hello, All:
I searched and found several discussions relating to problems importing video from a Sony DCR-HC38 into iMovie (going back several versions).  I never had difficulty with this, when I was importing video from this camcorder into my old MacBook, which had iMovie HD (circa 2006).  But now I've replaced that old MacBook with a new MacBook Air, which has iMovie '11... And iMovie won't recognize my camcorder, at least not when I'm using the 4-pin to 9-pin FireWire cable that's connected to the 9-Pin FireWire to Lightning adapter.
I was able to do a workaround, last night, but that isnt' working, any more... I connected the camcorder to a Canopus ADVC-110 via the camcorder's A/V Out port (Sony-supplied cable that has a camcorder pin on one end and the 3-pronged red/white/yellow pins on the other), and then connected the Canopus ADVC-110 to the MacBook Air via 6-pin to 9-pin FW that connected to the 9-pin FW to Lightning adapter.
Anyway... At this moment, iMovie '11 won't recognize my Sony camcorder via either route.
I'd be grateful for any tips, pointers, or other help!
Many thanks!!!
Bill in CT

Well, when I used to connect the very same camera to my iMac, and use iMovie HD to import video from that camera, the camera's display also used to say "DV in," just as it does when I connect it to the new MacBook Air and try to import video into iMovie '11.
I can only assume that "DV in" means that the camera has recognized that a FireWire cable is connecting it to a computer.

  • Imovie 08 and the sony DCR-SR85 HDD

help- I am a high school basketball coach, trying to import game film into iMovie to make a DVD. Someone donated a Sony DCR-SR85 to the team. Can anyone tell me how to import video files from that camera. I was told to upgrade to Quick Time Pro and this would help, but I am having no luck. I connect through the USB cord and the camera appears as "No Name" on my desktop, but neither iMovie or Quick Time will open the files.

    Coach,
I'm not sure how helpful this will be to you, but it worked for me. It is a bit of a workaround, but saved me from having to convert the files to another format in order to get iMovie '08 to recognized them. I, too, was trying to make a DVD from video captured from a Sony Handycam, except in my case, instead of trying to directly download the video from the camera to a Mac, I had first downloaded the video to a PC at work using the software that came with the camera (Picture Motion Browser Utility). Because the video files are large, and wanting to take them home, I stored them on a USB external hard drive.
Wanting to put together a volleyball recruiting DVD, my plan was to open the files on my Mac in iMovie '08. No such luck -- it would not import the files. Searching through previous discussions, I found that you can only import these MPEG-2 type files after converting them using 3rd party software. I tried that, still with no luck. Until I found this little blurb on some other website:
"Notice that to make iMovie '08 recognize a loose MPEG2 file you may have to create a dummy camera on a USB Flash/HD Drive: at the root level of the drive put a folder "MP_ROOT", and in this folder put a folder "101PNV01" and put the MPEG2 files in it. When the USB Drive is inserted, iMovie '08 sees it as a camera and allows you to import the files."
I created the two folders mentioned above on the root of the external drive, copied the video file (mpg) into the subfolder, disconnected the hard drive, launched iMovie, then reconnected the hard drive and it worked. Kind of a pain, but hope this helps you.

  • Is iMovie 11 compatible with Sony DCR HC90?

I've got ImageMixer loaded on the machine, and I'm using the firewire cable, but iMovie just won't recognize that there is a camera connected.

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC52 with a Firewire cable attached to a MBP and I am glad that AppleMan 1958 is on the case, so to speak, because I am experiencing the same symptoms.  iMovie '11 is not recognizing the camera as an import source.  Unless the Apple Support community can solve this one, my next possible way to transfer the content will be to play the Mini-DV source through a LCD TV and record the video and ambient audio with my Nikon CoolPix digital camera.  I have already established that I can transfer video files captured with my CoolPix to iMovie (by dragging and dropping them from the iPhoto Event Library).  Despite the obvious reduction in image and sound quality, it could work.

My iMac does not see a SONY DCR 5E videocam when connected using 4pin to USB cable, any ideas?

It depends on what Mac you have and what version of iMovie. You may need to use Firewire.

  • IMovie cant find camera Sony DCR-TRV33E

I have Sony DCR-TRV33E Camcorder and MacOSX Tiger. is it really so that it is not possible to use the camera with iMovie? I cant find this type from the supported list http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html there are tens of other DCR-TRVs. The problem is that the iMovie 5.02 cant find the camera, (the “camera is not connected” was the report from the program) I have also tried to reset the camera but it does not help. And yes Iam using iLink/FireWire cabel. Previously I was using it with Mac os9. The camera is only about 2 years old. Should I use MacOs 9 for this and if yes is the new iMovie working with MacOs9?
If there is drivers etc… to resolve this problem could you please tell me where to download them.

    Hi Tapio
Please try Your Camera on another Mac - to see that the A/D chip is OK
in the Camera. If defect then it behaves just as You describe:
    - camera connected
    - camera windig forward and backward
    - no picture
See if my list can help:
    Capture/Import problems:
    a) File-Vault is on - turn it off
    b) don’t Daisy chain camcorder - external hard disk - Mac
    c) Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
    d) Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
    e) Bad RAM-chips
    f) drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
    g) FW-wire cable OK?
    h) Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is prerecorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)

  • Mini-DV footage does not import into IMOVIE/ Camera not recognized

Sony Mini DV tapes do not import footage using firewire. Camera is not recognized. I have done all the troubleshooting suggested. unplug, plug in, turn on, off, etc. I have bought new firewires and tried to import with many different mini-dv camcorders, sony, panasonic. It worked before, but not now.
I teach in a multiple mac computer lab and have 20 computers, non of them import, although they did earlier. Student-use film lab. HELP!

    Hi Harm,
Yes, that's exactly what I do with my EX3 footage too - ignore the XML error messages. That's a bit buggy in it's own right, well, not buggy but it should really recognise the EX folder/file structure and ignore the XML files - maybe one for a feature request!
The 350 is a great camera - very much more sensitive and lower noise than the EX3.
I still like the EX3 though, as it's small and light (relatively!) - the 350 is very light though in comparisson to other shoulder mount cameras. Nice low power consumption too
Some things I miss from the EX3 - like the joystick menu button and the direct edit of parameters on the VF that the EX3 has. I also like the EX3 picure profile system over the 350 way of storing profiles (more similar to the 700 I believe).
    Cheers,
    Paul.

  • IMovie 9 not recognizing external drive

Hi - has anyone experienced iMovie 9 not letting you save an event folder/project folder to an external drive?
It seems to see them but has a yellow bang symbol next to it. It is a MyBook drive. I've tried right clicking but there is no indication what the problem is.
I don't have enough room on my MacBook Pro to create my movie so I want to import my event files and same my project on he MyBook drive but the only place I have to save is my local drive. Any suggestions?
    --Laureen

Check how your Mybook drive is formatted. iMovie will only recognize drives that are formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). If your drive is formatted as FAT32, iMovie will not see it.
You can easily reformat a drive using Disk Utility, but be aware that reformatting will erase anything that is currently on that drive.
    To reformat,
    Open Disk Utility
Partition the drive with one partition using GUID.
Erase the drive using Mac OS Extended (journaled) as format.

  • MAC and FINAL CUT NOT RECOGNIZING SONY V1U Camera

The new Sony V1U camera (out this year) is not being recognized by my iMAC computer (this years latest model) and nor by the FINAL CUT PRO HD 5.1 ...Any suggestions?
I already called Mac/ Final Cut - they had the other models (Sony A1U and Z1U)listed as compatible with FC, but the V1U wasn't listed - I'm thinking since it's brand new, it's just not listed yet. We tried at Samy's camera to get it to work with their MAC/ FC but no go, and I tried different fire wire cable- wasn't the problem either. ANy help is appreciated - Do I need a Sony Driver or will I just have no luck hooking up the camera?

Just got the new HVR-V1U and it worked correctly out of the box with FCP 5.1.2 and iMovie HD on a Mac G5 Quad. IMovie saw the camera correctly right away as HD and captured that way; I set FCP to HDV 1080i60 and it captured correctly.
The camera setting for IN/OUT REC are:
    REC FORMAT: HDV 1080i
COMPONENT: 1080i/480i (it auto switches depending on what's on tape)
    i.LINK CONV: OFF
DOWN CONVERT: SQUEEZE (nothing happens since iLink convert is off anyway).
Note that the camera does NOT capture in Quicktime "New Movie Recording" unless I put it into DV mode or downconvert mode, but in any of those DV modes, the picture is squeezed regardless of my "squeeze, letterbox, or crop" selections.
The V1U will also capture to FCP and iMovie while just in camera mode: no tape recording, but just whatever the camera is looking at. Sounds like tapeless recording is possible, though there must be a tape in the machine. I haven't tried the HDMI through a BlackMagic Intensity (because I don't have one, and it doesn't work yet with G5's in any case), so I can't comment on the cameras raw performance. Camcorderinfo.com has a detailed review of the FX7 which has similar, if not identical video properties in the default modes.
I did some quicky video recording tests in HDV and captured them on FCP as HDV, then as camera downconverted DV (anamorphic). I then used compressor to convert each of those streams to mpeg2 (4.5 avg, 7.5 max) and the HDV to mpeg2 direct is slightly better, especially in vertical red bleed.
My only grip so far is that Sony did not include a regular mini-stereo microphone plug in, but only the XLR pair. For serious video work, you probably do want to use XLR mics; but it sure would be nice to be able to just plug in my cheapy Sony ECM-MSD1 to do casual recording in stereo instead of recording only mono with the included mic. Oh, well, we can't have everything, can we.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • IMovie 08 not recognizing Canon Vixia HF100

I have had my canon Vixia hf100 for over a year and purchased iLife 08 (with iMovie 08) last year and had no problems with uploading my videos at first.
However, I am no longer able transfer my videos from my camcorder into imovie 08. It will not recognize the camera, and any time I try to do a manual transfer of the files, it tells me they are not movie files. Why would imovie STOP recognizing my camera that it used to recognize? I'm wondering if something changed with one of my software updates that changed imovie and somehow made it incompatible. I would rather not purchase imovie 09. Any insight would be appreciated.

Sorry I didnt mean to offend with simplicity, but unless you do the right (silly as it may seem) sequence it doesn't recognize the Canon! One thing done out of order and you must start over again! I did leave one step out, sorry! When the camera is turned on, you will get a camera screen to select the "play mode". Use the joystick on LCD display panel to select PC mode and depress select button.
iMovie '08 then detects and lets you download all clips from the camera.
Tip: You must use the Movie folder in your user "parental guidance" ok'd user area. No other folder works!
And I do have all apple software updates on that computer. If this still doesn't solve your problem, I purchased Leopard by DVD from Apple and upgraded Tiger. However my new Leopard native computer did not have iMovie '08, still don't know why! So my success has been on the computer using the Leopard DVD upgrade! Perhaps the system upgrade and the native Leopard misses the boat, which would cause your continued problem.
    Sincerely trying to help!

  • Final Cut Pro 7 not recognizing Sony HDV Deck on older 2008 version MacPro's

I am trying to connect a Sony HDV deck to Final Cut Pro version 7 on an older 2008 version MacPro.  The problem was with the firewire mini port on the back i believe because i used a different deck which was the same model - but the only difference was it had a firewire 400 port instead of mini firewire port.  Anyway, the deck with the 400 firewire port worked for logging and capturing, etc... (this also worked when i re-tested it on the 2008 MacPro)  Im wondering if anyone else has had problems with the firewire mini port on the Sony HDV deck because it seems like almost every HDV deck i have with mini firewire has problems connecting to final cut pro or any editing application.  I know now that the deck i had in question the mini port is not working correctly but is there a way to fix this or prevent the cable - deck from terminating the connection with the mini cable being used.  I dont need an answer to the deck problem because i figured it out but just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem.  Thank you...
    Kyle

    >I dont need an answer to the deck problem ... just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem
So you don't want an answer, just insight. OK, I'll give it a go.  I've had several Sony VTRs with the 4pin Firewire port (proper name for what you refer to as "mini"), which is the same type of port that most DV and HDV cameras use as well.  One of the main things you need to be wary of is plugging in and unplugging a Firewire cable while either the device or the computer is powered on.  I know that marketing hype claims that Firewire is hot swap-able, but it really isn't safe to do so.  The pins in both the 4 pin connector as well as the 6 pin connectors are very close together and if they aren't aligned exactly right with the socket, can easily cause arching and damage a Firewire port on either or both ends.  Is that the kind of insight you were looking for?

  • IMovie Projects not recognized

I recently backed up my computer on an external harddrive using time machine, wiped the computer, and started over.
Later, I opened iMovie and created two different projects. I exported one of them called "delete service" so I could email it to someone as a draft and didn't export the "insert service" project. Next time I went to open iMovie, the project I had exported was no longer there. I went into finder and BOTH files were there.... I tried clicking and dragging the file to get it to show up in iMovie, and it almost looked like it was opening, but it never showed up. When I went into my external harddrive and moved those iMovie projects to the folder, still nothing.
I deleted my prefences file, still nothing.

This happens in iMovie 10.0.2 too if that helps. I use 9.0.9 because in v10 Quicktime recordings are red.

  • IMovie'08 not recognizing scanned photos in iPhoto Library

I scanned about 200 photos into my iPhoto library and they show up fine in iPhoto. However when I try to import them into iMovie, they aren't showing up? Photos that I imported directly from my digital camera are there, but none of the photos I scanned? I've looked in all events, albums, etc. but can't find them through iMovie?
    Any suggestions?

Photos that I imported directly from my digital camera are there, but none of the photos I scanned?
Start by checking the format in iPhoto. What compression format did you use to store the scanned photos? (I.e., compare the format with those from your digital camera which are most likely JPEG.)
