IMovie '11 on Mountain Lion does not see Canon Vixia HG20, Lion does

I have 2 Canon Vixia HG20s and an HG21 that I had previously used with iMovie. When I plug the cameras into any of my Mountain Lion systems, iMovie does not see the camera to import from. On my MacBook it only sees the EyeSight camera.
I know I had imported from these cameras when I was still running Lion. In fact, I still have one Mini running Lion Server. I installed iMovie onto it and plugged in one the HG20s. It immediately recognized it and offered to import the videos. I unplugged it and immediately moved it to the MacBook with Mountain Lion, and it's not recognized.
The one thing I'm not sure I have tried is on another Mini that was upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I will be trying that tonight.
What can be done to allow me to import my videos, something I USED TO be able to do?
Thanks!

Wow. I looked at some of your other posts and found a few hints that I tried. I deleted all the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist and .cache files/folders in various locations and tried again. Now iMovie sees my camera!
Hope you figure out your issue!

  • IMovie '11 on Mountain Lion: Error loading plugins  [iLifeMediaBrowser]

    Hey all,
I would love some advice regarding an install of iMovie that will not load completely.  We are seeing a problem with an install of iMovie '11 (9.0.8  1778) on Mountain Lion (10.8.2).  It seems the app will launch but most of the menus are greyed out or don't do anything... seems like it crashed.  Here's what happens on the system when the app is launched:

Does anyone have any insights?  it seems that iMovie is trying to do something related to an app called iLifeMediaBrowser and looking for plugins that we don't have.  Can we disable iMovie from asking for those?
    Thanks so much!

  • Can I use iMovie Hd in mountain lion?

Will iMovie Hd work in Mountain Lion?

I have the special version (iMovie HD 6.04 as a .dmg as provided by Apple) working in Mountain Lion and use it.
The process to get it there is a bit painful though - if you have that version:
Install iLife 08 (the 6.04 version needs to have iLife 08 installed or it won't install).
Install iMovie HD 06 from .dmg (it will install in a separate folder)
    Install iLife 09 and/or 11
(Use Software Update after each install)
I've used this install method with both Lion and Mountain Lion.
You will now have both iMovie HD and the latest version of iMovie installed. They do work together.
Since iMovie HD was the only version that processes losslessly, I still prefer to use it for all my projects. And, it is so much easier to do editing out/in of split second portions of frames.
If you have just the regular iLife 06, you can try it - you may (or may not - experiment) have to install a current version of iMovie first or, if iMovie HD installs, simply manually create a folder as shown in my screenshot and then install the current version.

  • Is imovie free for Mountain Lion?

One month after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I decided to buy iPhoto for 20$. during the purchase, App store announced that this is free for ML. Now I am thinking perhaps other iLife products are free also and I am losing them!

    Augend wrote:
But I had not bought iPhoto before. I just had Lion OSX.
When did you buy your Mac?  Did it come with Lion installed?
If so, you should have already had iPhoto '11 (v. 9) and shouldn't have had to pay for the latest update.
What happens if you run Software Update under the Apple Menu?

  • IMovie 08 not recognizing Canon Vixia HF100

I have had my canon Vixia hf100 for over a year and purchased iLife 08 (with iMovie 08) last year and had no problems with uploading my videos at first.
However, I am no longer able transfer my videos from my camcorder into imovie 08. It will not recognize the camera, and any time I try to do a manual transfer of the files, it tells me they are not movie files. Why would imovie STOP recognizing my camera that it used to recognize? I'm wondering if something changed with one of my software updates that changed imovie and somehow made it incompatible. I would rather not purchase imovie 09. Any insight would be appreciated.

Sorry I didnt mean to offend with simplicity, but unless you do the right (silly as it may seem) sequence it doesn't recognize the Canon! One thing done out of order and you must start over again! I did leave one step out, sorry! When the camera is turned on, you will get a camera screen to select the "play mode". Use the joystick on LCD display panel to select PC mode and depress select button.
iMovie '08 then detects and lets you download all clips from the camera.
Tip: You must use the Movie folder in your user "parental guidance" ok'd user area. No other folder works!
And I do have all apple software updates on that computer. If this still doesn't solve your problem, I purchased Leopard by DVD from Apple and upgraded Tiger. However my new Leopard native computer did not have iMovie '08, still don't know why! So my success has been on the computer using the Leopard DVD upgrade! Perhaps the system upgrade and the native Leopard misses the boat, which would cause your continued problem.
    Sincerely trying to help!
    Jim...

  • Why doesn't iMovie have Aperture as a dropdown choice for photos?  I don't have iPhoto, but it's the only choice I see.  I am using iMovie 11 in Mountain Lion.

This is frustrating.  I don't want to buy iPhoto as well and have another database of my photos eating up SSD space on my MBP.  I have tried dragging photos into my project from Aperture, and that doesn't work either.

I get Aperture as an option in mine. You just click on the Photo Browser in the Middle Toolbar in iMovie. Aperture should be an option.
First make sure you are looking in the right place, as shown in these pictures.
If you are and it still does not work for you, try trashing the preferences - as explained here.

  • Bugs with import from archive in iMovie 11 on Mountain Lion

Click import from camera archive pulls up a finder.
When I click on a folder with sereral archives it just hangs without opening for 10-15 whole minutes.
Sometimes it will finally show the contents of the folder sometimes it will just hang forever and and I  need to kill imovie.
After it pulls up the contents it can import 1 archive fine.
Then if I try to import any other archive it says that the folder is not a camera archive.
If I kill imovie and  restart I can repeat the sam all over again.

    Hi,
Did you ever get an answer to this ? Since a few days I am running 10.8.3 ML and I have exactly the same problem with iMovie not opening archive folders, or any folder for that matter.

  • HT1349 Updated my operating system to Mountain Lion and iMovie will not play movies developed through the old iMovie HD program.  Any idea how to convert the movies or buy an app that will do that.

Having trouble converting iMovieHD to the new updated iMovie dowloaded with Mountain Lion.  Any ideas

Given the extreme limitations outlined in the article Allen linked to, and given thst iMovie HD 6 is known to work with Mountain Lion, you might be better served by installing iMovie 6 on your Mac.
You can still keep iMovie 11 as well:
Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iMovie 11 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks. Update it to iMovie 6.0.3.
Now re-install iMovie 11. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
    Then reinstall iMovie 11.
iMovie 6 works great with iDVD 7.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.

  • OSX Mountain Lion iMovie

It says you get iMovie with OSX Mountain Lion but I do not have it. How do I get it?

Mountain Lion does not come with iMovie (or iPhoto/Garage Band).  Your computer does.  If you have a computer that was purchased prior to the release of Lion, it would have come on an included DVD.  If you're computer is Lion based or later, then you would have accepted those applications in the app store, and they'd be associated with your apple id.
If your mac came with Lion or later:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4373
Otherwise, you can find your DVD, or purchase the newest versions from the app store, provided you are running Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • Which MiniDV tape camcorders does Mountain Lion like ?

Okay, I took a break from iMovie for a year or so.  When I came back, it appears that Mountain Lion hates both of my MiniDv tape camcorders so much that it won't even recognize that they exist (Sony DCR TRV-10 & Panasonic PV-DV200).  Apple tech support suggested that I come in here to see if any of you folks are having luck getting iMovie '11 on Mountain Lion to see your MiniDV camcorders.  Please list any makes & models that will export from MiniDv tape through a Firewire 4-pin to FW800 port on your Mac.  I need to buy a cheap, used camcorder to get all my MiniDv tape into my late 2011 17" MBP...
    Thanks !

    Hi Jonny Ray (aka FLAKBAIT),
There is no harm in trashing the preference file. It may help. Note that for iMovie '11 the preference file is named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist", but is named differently for earlier versions.
In another of your topics posted recently, you mentioned that you were trying to connect your camcorders to work with iMovie HD 6.0.3. The preference file for that version is "com.apple.iMovie.plist". For other versions, there is generally a number after "iMovie" (usually representing the version number). To add to the confusion, both iMovie 3 and iMovie 4 share the same preference file, being "com.apple.iMovie3.plist" (there is no iMovie4.plist).
Hopefully by now you have got things working using one of your FireWire drives, and there may be no need to trash the preference file.
Thanks for your kind words, and good luck with all this!

    Hi there,
When I try to update iMovie, iPhoto and Mountain Lion I get this error: "Error in the App Store. Try again later. (18)".
Just wanted to know if anybody had the same Error from Mac App Store as I've been searching in the Apple Support Communities and other websites but haven't been able to find any solutions to the problem.
I have a new iMac 21 inch running Mountain Lion, I received it a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks a lot for your help.

    Hi,
I tried to update them all together and also separately but just couldn't be done.
I don't remember having accepted anything regarding iLife apps during the iMac set up to be honest.
I still haven't tried any of the iLife apps, but why would this matter?
I should be able to update without any problem and still get the same "Error in the App Store. Try again later. (18).
I just saw this other post and it looks exactly the same problem as I have, but nobody seems to know how to solve it either:

  • Mountain Lion thinks camera is a "package"

So bought latest MBP 13" when it came out. Worked fine. Got my free upgrade to Mountain Lion and installed it.
Nnder lion, when I connected my panasonic video camera I could go to finder, browse the camera (it appeared as a disk) and I could copy my video files over and preprocess them using ClipWrap (AVCHD->MOV) and import them to iMovie.
Under mountain lion, the file system of the camera is not dirtectly visible. It sees the folders as "packages". I found I can still access the files, but I have to right click and choose "show package contents" to navigate to the files on the camera in finder.
    Any body else? Ideas?

Apple uses packages to keep people from tampering with things in folders that aren't meant to be tampered with.
In the case of a camera, if you start renaming files or moving them around, the camera might not be able to access the images anymore (depends on the camera). You sound like you know what you're doing, but I guarantee you if my mother got a look at her camera disk, she would start renaming files, deleting XML files, etc. And I once had to help someone who had decided to "organize" her iPhoto library folder (Apple has since turned that into a package too).
The basic idea is that a novice user like my mother will have her files protected and access everything using iPhoto or other software, but a "power user" like you will know to right-click to retain the same access that you had before. It's the best of both worlds, if you don't mind the extra click.
You can actually change any old folder into a package - just add ".pkg" to the name of the folder. To change it back into a folder, remove the ".pkg" - though I don't recommend trying that on your camera.

  • My old iMovie is gone dumb and will not fully open

I was just ready to burn my movie to a disc and iMovie (Old Clapboard version) went haywire. HELP!

I don't know what version of iMovie you are using, nor the Mac OS X version (that's always helpful when posting questions).
However, usually when iMovie has the type of problem you mention, it's advisable to firstly trash the preference file. Here's how to go about it for iMovie '11 on Mountain Lion (similar methods apply for other versions):
Go to your Home folder <your user name>/Library/Preferences (NOT the Library folder at the top level in Macintosh HD). Similar to Lion, on Mountain Lion (10.8.3), the Home Library folder will be hidden (unlike pre-Lion OS X versions). To access it, click and hold down Go in the Finder menu bar, then press and hold down the Option key on the keyboard - the Library folder will appear in the drop down list. Slide the pointer down to Library and, as you release the pointer, the folder will open in Finder. Now you can navigate to the Preferences folder.
In your user Library/Preferences folder, locate a file named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist". With iMovie closed, drag this file to the Desktop. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh preference file with the default settings (this happens in the background as iMovie is loading).
If iMovie now opens and appears to be working properly, you can change the default settings in the menu item "IMovie > Preferences", as desired. Also, it's now safe to drag the old preference file to the Trash. Trashing the file will not harm any existing Events or Projects.
Note that these instructions are for iMovie '11 (currently version 9.0.9). For users on earlier versions, the preference file has a different but similar name. For example, for iMovie '09 (that's version 8.0.6) the file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". Earlier versions may or may not have a number in the name, for example, "com.apple.iMovie.plist"
If this doesn't fix the problem with iMovie crashing, please come back as I have another possible solution to offer.
