IMovie '11 pointer has no transparency

Thanks to Karsten I successfully inserted several pointers in an iMovie 11 sports video. However my second video was not successful. Every time I insert a pointer I get a black box on the preview screen. Also sometimes the pointer type/color is changed in the edit window. If I select a green lower left pointer I sometimes get a blue lower right. I have selected "Crop" for Photo Placement in Properties and all files are .png. Anyone have any ideas?

As long as the transparency is working the ratio doesn't seem to be an issue. Sorry I don't know about the circle pointer rather than another pointer.
You can create a transparent png file in Preview. Preview doesn't create new blank files so you want to start with a screenshot.
First go to iMovie and do CMD-Shift-4. You will see a crosshair cursor. You can release the CMD-shift-4 now. Now drag the crosshair cursor to select just the viewer of your iMovie project (this will give you the correct height/width ratio). While still holding down the mouse press the Control key and release.
Holding down the Control key while releasing the mouse copies the screenshot to the Clipboard.
Now go to Preview. Go to File and select New from Clipboard (or press CMD-N). This will look like a screenshot of a frame of your movie. CMD-A to select all and then press delete. Now you have a blank, transparent canvas to work with.
Click the Edit button to show the Edit tools. Click the line button on the toolbar to add an arrow, adjusting the color and line width to your liking.
File > Export. Export the file as a png file. Alpha should be checked.

The imovie viewer screen has no picture. Pressing the space bar does nothing. The bar in the thumb nails moves and the audio is working. Just no picture. On a Mac OS X 10.6.8. imovie 9.0.4. This is the first time I've used imovie. Downloading vieos for fun.

A NULL interface pointer has been dereferenced

This was an answer to someone who had this error message. I scoured the web to see what I could find. This is what I wrote to him. Does anyone else have any answers or know a work around???

After doing some research on the error message, "A NULL interface pointer has been dereferenced". There may be a work around.
Are you on a Mac? If you are, you may want to try updating CS4 and Installing the 9.0.2 update either manually or using the Adobe Update Manager. However you mentioned you exported to AVI which I know is a PC codec. Still maybe there is a adobe update for the PC as well.
Also, if you are using video footage that uses interframe compression in any of the video placeholders (mpeg, h.264, mp4, etc), or if you have one or two mp3 or aic audio files, that may be an issue as well.
If that's the case, convert audio files to aiff or wav, and convert the video into something that doesn't use interframe compression. Maybe Photo Jpeg, Animation, or apple pro res.
Are you using just pictures? If so, then that info won't help either.
If you are just changing the text and using pictures, I'm not sure why you are getting the NULL interface error.
Answer the questions above and I'll try and help you out some more.

If you could review this small issue I had with one of the templates or forward this to the customer service department.
I have been attempting to render the Grid Warp Final Main Comp for some time now. It took me about 10 minutes to swap the text and pictures out, but the rendering process has taken me over 20 hours and I still havent been able to pinpoint the issue. I have tried rendering in After Effects CS3 and After Effects CS4 both which give the same result. The rendering process will get to anywhere from 400-600 frames and it will give me a warning saying: "After Effects warning: A NULL interface pointer has been dereferenced." Right after clicking OK on this warning another window comes up saying After Effects error: Quicktime export failed (14). This happens whether I export as FLV or if I use the render queue to do avi. Please advise on a possible solution when you have a chance as this heavily delayed our project time line. I have made sure there is no missing files in the project.

I got the same exact error in Windows 7. Seems to be a video inside the composition or a part of the composition itself thats the problem. I've tried increasing both the swap space and the ram usage. Still nothing but the video does push a solid 3 gigs of ram usage. I'm using cs3 myself.

• use of strange media eg .avi, .wmv .mp4 etc.
(not from miniDV tape Camera - as iMovie up to HD6 is made for)
Convert video to - streamingDV and
audio to .aiff 48kHz 16-bit (no .mp3 etc)
• corruption - eg iMovie pref file or preferences
Trash iMovie plist file
Repair Permissions
Usually helps here

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather be 25Gb or more
• Delete iMovie pref file
iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)

While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
• Screen must be set to Million-colors
• Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
• Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.

From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

Is the question mark on the Dock at the bottom of your screen? Then it means that the Dock can't find the application.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

Mouse pointer has lost its place in the shapes list

Suddenly, my mouse pointer exhbits a mismatch of shape and current context.
Examples:
On the compose page of ASC, placed in the left or right margin, or anywhere from the to of the screen to the space below the grey bar of buttons that starts with the apple and ends with the search box, the pointer has the expected black arrow shape.
Hovered over Apple Support Communities, New, Your Stuff, History, Browse, or in the spaces along that line, it changes to a cross with centred dot similar to the drawn shape below:
Placed in or beside the formatting controls above the compose box, it returns to the expected black arrow shape, whether over the grey area or the cfomatting buttons.
In the text entry area, whe're back to the cross, very difficult to pick out on the page, especially when it's somewhere in the text.
The cross remains as I move the pointer down the page. There's a quick flash of the arrow to the left and slightly above the cross as the pointed moves downward across the word Categories, and across the words in the list of categories below, and from there to the bottom of the page.
The cross gets substituted for other pointer shapes as well—On Google Maps, the cross shows until I press the mouse button to grab the map, then changes to the enpected closed hand when I drag the map in any direction. In Sreet view, I get the arrowm the cross, or an I beam in the circle that indicates where a click will move the viewpoint, or a cross in the circle that indicates the center of a magnified view.
Questions: What's happening? How do I fix it?

Thanks for the pointer. Neither of the Adobe plug-ins mentioned in the linked discussion are installed on my MBP; in fact the only one installed is the Google Earth We Plug-in.
In the meantime, the mouse pointer has gone back to behaving normally. The only significant action I can think of is that the MBP was shut down for a little over 10 hours today. I had restarted it a couple of times last night, but had not let it sit for any extended time.
Still a mystery.

This should not happen.
Having said that it will happen to some extent of you Paste in a larger amount of text.
Does holding down the ALT key and hitting Enter/return a couple of times expand the window ?
This normally adds Line Breaks to the Text Field
If this does not work it will point to a windowing issue which is related to data held in com.apple.ichat.plist
Go to the Finder and it's Go Menu.
In here hold the ALT key so you can see the Home Library item and select that
Open Preferences.
Find the com.apple.iChat.plist and the associated .lockfile and drag both to the Trash.
Restart iChat.

I had an IT friend of mine come over and it turns out it was the firewall, it wouldn't let iTunes have access to certain things so he granted it permission and it was instantly fixed.
Thank you kindly for reporting back about your resolution. Apologies for the nosy question, but which make of firewall are you using? (Although I've seen firewall permissions implicated in other iTunes problems, I hadn't seen one associated with a "transparent" iTunes before ... so I was thinking it might be worth checking on the possibility with other folks reporting a transparent iTunes where the DirectX and/or video drivers don't seem to be involved.)

In LR 5 my pointer has changed into a magnify tool and when I click on my mouse it turns into a hand tool. How do I get my pointer back? Thanks for your help!!

That is exactly how Lightroom is supposed to work. In the Library Module when you are in grid view you will have a pointer. When you are in loup view and the cursor is over the image it becomes a magnifier but when it is over one of the side panels it becomes a pointer. When the cursor is a mangifier and you click on it, the image will be magnified to the amount set on the slider in the tool tray at the bottom of the image. The cursor will then become a hand tool so you can pan around the image.
When no particular tool has been chosen in the develop module, and the cursor is over the image, it will act just like it does in the Library Module. When a tool has been chosen, the cursor becomes representative of the tool being used. i.e. the crop tool shows up as the crossed squares, the spot removal brush shows as the crosshairs with a double circle etc. When the cursor is over one of the side panels, it becomes the typical cursor.
Basically, the cursor is context sensitive.

Slow iMovie - Does it has limitation in the amount of video files it can edit?

Dear All,
I would like to do some videoediting of holidays video with my iMac i7 12gb ram.
I have imported with iMovie my dv video and this worked fine. But starting from a certain point iMovie became really slow. Thinking of a memory issue, I added 8gb ram (now 12) but the problem persisted. So I decided to move video files from mac hdd to my gbit lan NAS, and than I got a firewire800 hdd.
I got a MyBook Studio II (http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=210) which I tried using first RAID1 and than to increase speed I configured into RAID0.
Now, what I noticed is that if the project has a total of:
- 29gb of video files, editing the project (move, delete, add) and play works quite fine. (project file size about:17mb)
- 53gb of video files, editing is slow (about 7sec to move or delete a clip) (project file size about:128mb)
This happens both if the video and pj files are on the iMac hdd or in the firewire one.
Does anyone of you know if iMovie has some limitations in the amount of video files it can edit, or if it is not performing correctly under certains conditions?
Furthermore I will start editing 1080/50p video since I got a new camera. Keep going with iMovie is the right way? Do you suggest other products?

It appears you have enough processor speed, memory, and hard drives.
Once these are taken care of, there are two main things that cause slowness
1) Events should be logical events. You should not dump all your footage into a single event. A project can use clips from multiple events and the performance is fine. In DV for example, an event should hold maybe two tapes maximum. If a single tape has three logical events: say Birthiday, Vacation, and Christmas, make three events.
2) if you editing feature length movies, you should use Final Cut Pro X. For short movies iMovie is fine. For movies in the middle, it is more of a judgment call. The reason is that iMovie renders everything in one pass. Final cut Pro does background rendering as you go. If this were the case for you, you would be able to edit at full speed, and you would only notice the slowness or a crash when you shared the movie.

Why does the mouse 'run' to the lower right side of desktop and freeze when a SmartBoard is plugged into the USB port. Running 10.8.5. Sometimes the pointer has a cloud under it but it always freezes.

I run SmartBoards connected to iMacs running 10.7 and 10.8 throughout my school. On one of these computers the mouse has recently started freezing the minute a SmartBoard is plugged in to the USB port. The mouse 'runs' to the bottom right side of the screen, a cloud often is under the pointer, and it is not longer interactive. You can move the mouse upward a bit with the cloud following some of the time but it does not work. Once the SmartBoard is unplugged the mouse works normally. This particular computer worked fine with the SmartBoard until recenlty. Any solutions or ideas?

AVCHD is a highly complex file structure:
the 'video iself' is within STREAM as .mts, plus corresponding .cpi files in the CLIPINF ...
if the structure is intact, you go via File/Import/Camera Archive …
WITHOUT such a complete structure, the mts are not readable for iM and the automatic conversion routines don't get triggered. you have to manually convert/rewrap with 3rd party tools.-
the pics/jpegs can be imported via Finder/drag'n drop.-
