IMovie '11 preview/play issues?

I just bought iMovie '11 for my MacBook (using OS X Lion (10.7.1)), and I am having this weird issue during playback.
I have placed PNG images (transparent backgrounds) on top of the main background scenes using the 'cutaway' option. When I do a test play, those images will not appear.
When I did the FIRST scene with a cutaway option, the Preview Play went fine. But when I started adding additional cutaways to the following scenes, they stopped showing up on preview, and will only appear when I manually scroll across the frames and/or export the entire project to an M4V.
Anyone else having this issue? It's a bit annoying. I don't want to get fully into a video project on iMovie, only to find that something doesn't work when I have exported the movie.

You will need DVD software either iDVD or a 3rd party app.
Two ways to go.
Approach the Apple store where you bought your iMac and ask them to give you a copy of the iLife 11 disc.
Tell them you need iDVD. Many others have reported that Apple will come to the party.
Otherwise you will need to buy an iLife 11 disc which contains iDVD and install it on your computer.
You can source these discs on eBay, Amazon or Apple stores.
Another way is to buy 3rd party DVD burning software such as Roxio.

Delayed text captions not appearing (except in Preview "Play this slide")

Can anyone explain why my delayed text captions are not appearing in any mode BUT Preview/Play this slide. When I do that type of preview, the text captions show up exactly when I set them (starting at 27s - and are set to display for 'rest of slide').
There are eight delayed text captions and none of them show up with I preview the Project, From this slide, or Publish.
The visible flag is on, time is "rest of slide", appear after 27s, effect is not relevant, and it is not a layers issue.

Belive it or not, I wasn't being sarcastic. Only Buttons, Click Boxes or Text Entry Boxes will pause playback of a slide. So I figured if I asked how many you had, you would scrutinize the slide and perhaps discover one you had missed.
Play this slide doesn't behave like the other preview. This doesn't mean it's bad, just different. You simply have to understand that the only real reason for using that type of preview is to achieve a rough representation of timing elements. When will they appear and disappear. As you have discovered, you may not interact with them. You may only watch them. It's a bit like watching something through a window. You cannot reach through it and touch anything.

How to get a gif file to loop in PE11 with MAC 10.6.8? 480x320x72 pix/in. saved layers for web, check animate,preview plays fine but saved file doesnt

can't figure out why the gif file won't loop. Set up 5 photo frames 480x320pixels x 72pix/in in PE11, creating a layer for each. Each layer visible. Saved for web. Checked animate. The preview plays fine. But when I save the file and then click on the saved file to play, it re-opens the layers instead of playing the loop. The only SAVE option that shows up is "IMAGES ONLY"
Using photoshop elements 11 on MAC 10.6.8. Either I'm setting this up wrong or is there a hidden setting I need to change?

Thanks for the thought, Barbara B. Not sure if this counts, but emailed the file to myself [different email account, same computer] but it would not play as an email attachment. Any suggestions for a web upload where I can test your suggestion? Seems like there should be a different save option other than IMAGES ONLY but that is the only option I'm given.

Many Sporadic Preview Related Issues

Not sure if this is where to post/report Lightroom 5 issues or not, but here are preview-related issues I am experiencing...
Preview panel "preview" freezes indefinitely.
App very slow to load while creating new previews. (previews take forever to create and update)
Wrong previews showing for wrong images when swapping between folders, etc. (ie: all photos, last import, custom collections)

This was a clean install that ran beautifully at first. Started noticing this more and more after using the spot tool. (my last step in processing a job)
I use separate catalogs per job. Some as small as a few dozen images. (family stuff) Others, as large as 500-600. (engagement and wedding clients)
Hope you are working on this. It's making work a struggle. I'm not just a "consumer". ;-)

My Itunes previews have been playing fully now for the past few days. After trying every suggestion possible to fix the problem of 5-10 second previews, I took the advice on one feed to use OpenDNS for your network internet connection. There are internet sites that will instruct you how to do it. Just Google "opendns for (your operating system)". I have Windows XP and followed a video instruction at www.top-windows-tutorals.com/using-opendns.html. Afterward, close your browser and then flush the DNS Resolver cache; Start/Run, type CMD in the open field, click OK, in resulting window type ipconfig/flushdns, press return on keyboard. No guarantees, but my browser is faster and my Itunes previews are playing fully so far. But I still shudder every time I hit the preview button.

Imove does not play music

I'am creating a movie in my Mcbookair I realised that when add a background music, or even effects from the software, the imove does not play it. it plays only the video sound.

Project in Imovie 9 Only plays back still frames, wont play video

Project in Imovie 9 Only plays back still frames
I can see all the video clips but screen just goes black while going over the video. The video is still in the computer and has not been moved around.
Also if i play the imported video on the "Event" board it plays over it with no information coming back to the computer. Like if the files were offline.
any help?

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
Macintosh HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named.
com.apple.iMovie.plist
com.apple.iMovie3.plist
com.apple.iMovie7.plist
com.apple.iMovie8.plist
and find com.apple.iApps.plist - trash this too
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file/s out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
• Screen must be set to Million-colors
• Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
• Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
This You do by
_ close iPhoto
_ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
• iMovie updated ?
• QuickTime updated ?
• Mac OS version ?
• Program miss-match. iMovie 4 - will not work under Leopard

From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

At what point in a track to itunes previews play

I am getting my music up onto iTunes and wanted to know at what number of seconds does the track preview play i.e. 0, 5, 10, 15 etc.
Also how long does the preview play for?
and finally, though I dont exect this to be possible - CD baby allows artists to select custom start times for preview audio clips - is there a way to doe this for my muisc uploaded to the iTunes stort

IMovie Slideshow- Preview appears black?!

I am making a slideshow with iMovie and I've gotten very far into it (less than 200 pictures total). I am using the Ken Burns Effect and making sure that each picture focuses on the right thing when it zooms in, so I am using the "show photos setting" button a lot. In doing this, there is a preview of the photos.
But, after a while on one project, the preview stopped showing, and all it is is a black screen. I shut down iMovie and restarted it. Still no preview. I restarted the computer. No Preview. So I made an entirely new iMovie file and imported in all of the pictures again and tried to seperately work with all of the pictures. But, after emptying the trash option on iMovie, the previews decided to stop working again.
Does anyone know how I can fix this, and be able to see my pictures' preview without starting an entirely new project?

You nailed it. There's a bug in iMovie 6.0.3 that discards the project's own copy of the image when we empty the iMovie Trash. Because the image is no longer available to iMovie, we can't Update the clip. It can't be re-rendered; it turns black.
The trick is to not empty the iMovie Trash.
This only affects photos imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON.

Keep Preview playing when switching windows?

Is there any possible way to keep Preview playing the file when switching windows? For example, pressing the space bar on .mp3 file begins playing it in Preview, however when switching windows, the preview pauses until you go back to the finder window. This is annoying when browsing .mp3's to play while doing other things. Any ideas?

I think you mean QuickLook, not Preview. And no, QuickLook is not intended to work that way--it is a way to do just what its name says: provide a quick looksee at the files in an open Finder window.
As for ideas: why not just open them in iTunes?
If you don't want to add them to iTunes, you can put the folder with the mp3s into Column View, make sure the box for "show preview column" is checked in View Options, then click directly on the icon for the file in the preview column (as your mouse moves over the icon, you will see the stylish play button appear on top of the icon). It will continue to play no matter what else you are doing.

I'm using a OAM file. Placing it as I would an image. In EA, I grouped an ellipse with a text box and then applied the fade on effect to the group. Each fades on as the timeline progresses. I hope that answers your question. let me know if not. I also tried to ungroup the two layers and apply the fade to each individually but it produced the same effect in the content viewer.

Major Previewing(?) Issues

I recently made the switch from a PC/MovieMaker to an iMac specifically for iMovie. However, I am finding it nearly impossible to actually formulate a movie. I love everything about iMovie right up until I want to change something in the timeline. If I move even one clip, the preview no longer follows the timeline. Extra clips play, the timing is off, clips are skipped, transitions are off or missing, etc. Altering clips with titles is especially exasperating.
My husband and I have searched forums and such to fix this problem and have found a few suggestions, including emptying the cache and deleting a "plist" file. These options sometimes work and sometimes don't. I can't help but think there must be an easier way. Do I really have to find and delete files everytime I want to alter a clip? This makes no sense to me.
At this point the only way I can figure out to actually make a movie is to know exactly where each clip needs to go prior to dragging it into the timeline. Any assistance is greatly appreciated, as I am longing for MovieMaker (yikes!).

Thanks for your reply. Here is what I (think I) know:
1. As far as I know, I am strictly out of the box. My husband actually set it up, but I doubt he messed with too many settings.
2. No external drives to speak of yet.
3. I did import from our Sony DV camcorder for video clips. The photos were transferred over from our PC. Although we have most of our pictures in iPhoto, the ones I used were elsewhere on our iMac.
4. So far I have seven 15-45 second video clips, 50 photos, one title only clip, one still video image, and one iTunes song in the timeline. I also have a few titles over clips and "Overlap" transitions between each clip. I did somewhat successfully put together a three-minute video clip and scrolling titles movie, but ran into the same issues when trying to rearrange clips. I just realized that the timeline for that movie had separate audio clips for its video clips and this one does not. Hmmm.
5. The project is a first year birthday video for my daughter. I would like to start with a video clip montage (with original audio) followed by a montage of photos set to an iTunes song. I would repeat this video montage/photo montage sequence about four or five times and then end with a montage of video clips set to an iTunes song. I would like some clips titled, which really seems to put a glitch in things.
I only hesitate to go into technical detail because I am more the creative end of things in our house, so I am not sure what to offer up. I can try to answer specific questions, though.

Preview Capture Issue

While I have checked many of the posts on this subject, I am getting nowhere. When I load FinalCut Xpress 4, and try to capture I am getting the "Preview Disabled" located over the color bars. I can actually play the camera (Canon GL2), rewind, etc., but no preview. The software does "see" or detect the camera. I have followed suggestions of many of the posts such as:
-deleted all Prefs.
-Repair permissions
-shut computer, pulled everything out, unplugged power, water 1/2 hour, replugged power, booted Mac and plugged items back in one at a time.
-Checked Library for Quicktime packages - none there (lookig for old QT 6 packages). I am running 7.3.1.
-Run PRAM
When I tried to see if the camera would work in iMovie HD (version 6), it does not. The program keeps telling me the camera is disabled or turned off.
The camera does work on my other Macs so it is not a camera issue.
I am stumped at this point.

BTW, this problem is one my 1.8 Dual G5.

Yours was the best advice I got and it worked. I had moved over to my MacPro, which also had to Lacie drives hooked via fire-wire. I disconnected both of them, removed the iSight and low and behold everything work - Capture again. I am not sure I ever had this problem with my dual 2.7 G5 but never the less, it worked. When I get back on my Dual 1.8 G5, I'll try the same thing. I will try to get a fire-board. That might solve some issues. I have about 1 Terabyte in the MacPro, so it is not an issue once a project is competed to move the files to one of the Lacie drives.
It is interesting that when the two Lacie drives are connected and I go to Software profiler, Profiler is unable to list Fire-wire devices. Interesting!1

Audio Disappeared in iMovie Event Preview Window

I've been using iMovie 09 for about 2 years with no major issues. Today I added some new clips, and for some reason I can no longer hear audio in ANY of my "events" in the preview window (or whatever it's called--I'm talking about the box where you look at your clips and decide which parts to add to your project). If I select a section and add it to a project, it plays fine (ie with audio) in the project window, but nada still in the preview window. Anyone know what's going on?

Are you able to check the Volume setting for those imported clips? I've had clips that I've dragged from the Event Library into a project suddenly lose their audio. When I looked at the audio waveform it was flat. But I could drag the volume up to get it back to 100% where it should have been when I dragged it originally.
Try this: Click on the clip in the Project time line, where the little 'gear' icon appears on the clip. From that pop-up menu choose Audio Adjustments:
You will see the iMovie Inspector window open with a whole series of audio adjustments you can perform on just the audio track iself. The one you want is Volume, near the top of the window. That should always be 100%.

Iphoto, Imovie and Preview constantly freezing

Hello,
since updating to Mavericks a couple of months ago, I'm experiencing a lot of problems with this Imac. The Iphoto library will open just fine, but am unable to open a single picture. Also importing from 1 of our devices: Ipod touch won't work since a couple of weeks. When trying to do either of them, the program will 'freeze' and all I can do is 'force stop'. Same with preview and Imovie.
I've installed clean my mac 2, but no help there. Any tips? Am no computer expert

If all three apps are causing problems then I would guess the issue is at the OS level.
Get rid of Clean My Mac 2. It does more harm than good.
I would reinstall the OS.
