IMovie 11 quits when moving projects to external hard drive

I am trying to move my iMove projects to my external harddrive to save space on my computer (MacBook white unibody 2010/11 running OSX 10.6.8 and iMovie 11 version 9.0.4 (1634). I used the instructions on Apple's iMovie 11 support page (see here http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289). Every time I try to do this iMovie unexpectedly quits. Actually, the first time I try it says "Copy Failed: The copy could not be filed..." - when I try again the application quits and it gives me this message:
Process:         iMovie [3663]
Path:            /Applications/iMovie.app/Contents/MacOS/iMovie
Identifier:      com.apple.iMovieApp
Version:         9.0.4 (1634)
Build Info:      iMovieApp-16340000~2
Code Type:       X86 (Native)
Parent Process:  launchd [104]
etc....
I have a ScreenCast video of exactly what happens when I try here:  http://screencast.com/t/QWN6yWxN
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Here are the steps to move the library safely to an external hard drive. Okay. Make sure iTunes is open first. Hide it. Find the iTunes folder. Click and drag to external hard drive. Wait till it is copied then go to prefernces in iTunes. Go to the advanced tab and then hit the genral tab. Change the iTunes folder option to the folder within the titled "iTunes" folder to the "Music" folder. Also click the boxes "Keep iTunes folder organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes folder". This worked for me and did not effect the ratings. Let me know if it works. It should. Oooh. One more thing. Back up your library first incase you make a mistake or it doesn't work!

  • Moving projects between external hard drives lose clips

Sorry for the unclear subject line, but I really can't think of a quippy way to say what the problem is.
Short version--I moved project from external hard drive A to external hard drive B. Worked on A. Worked on B. Moved it back to A (still have copy on B). No longer works on A. Clips show up in the timeline, but on screen is white. Transitions, titles, audio don't work. Still works on B.
    Ideas?
Long version--I'm using 10.3.9 on my old Powerbook. iMovie 6.0.3. I am using Lacie Porsche 250GB external and a Mercury Elite Pro 500 GB hard drives. When I started, the Lacie, which I was using for my speaking career videos, was NOT formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So, while working on another project, I had issues with the infamous Ken Burns bug with pictures.
After consulting with the experts here (thanks Karl), I determined that I must reformat. So, pain and anguish, I moved the various movies off of the Lacie (Drive A) to the Mercury (Drive B). On both, the movies worked fine--all transitions, everything. The Mercury was and is Mac OS Extended (but NOT Journaled).
So, I wipe the Lacie with Disk Utility so it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once finished, I begin the process of moving projects (3 in total) back to the Lacie. Two of the projects are completed works with transitions, audio file, titles and the like. One is just clips in the clip pane, none in the timeline. I moved them all at once.
When I did, I checked them before I would delete them off the Mercury. When I did, both of the completed projects loaded properly--the clips do show in the timeline. But, in the preview window, all I have is a blank white screen. When I play, nothing happens.
I have not erased anything, changed anything, thrown anything away--nothing. And, they still work perfectly on the Mercury (same computer, obviously).
This one really has me stumped. I am really irked that iMovie has apparently become such a messed up program. Worse, this has been out for some time now (I had not used it yet, but I got iLife last year some time). I can't believe there are all these issues all this time later and obviously Apple has done nothing or little to correct these problems. I consider iMovie a real flagship program to model the ease of use and blah blah blah that we all know concerning Apple.
OK, sorry for venting---anyone with any ideas? Did I mess up the drive when I wiped it? Is this merely the program? Something between the fact that the Mercury is NOT Journalled? Any help will, as always, be appreciated.

    Thanks David---
The Permissions are the same for both, on both hard drives.
I have not repaired permissions on either.
I did shut down the computer last night and this AM, upon starting again, had the same problem.
I did attempt a few fixes--I moved the clips from the timeline back to the preview pane. I had one clip already there and it would play perfectly. When I did that, with a clip from the timeline and then moved it back, it would show up and play. But, upon hitting the next clip, it would stop playing at the first transition.
Some of the transitions are from a Third Party (Gee). Remember, though, they played perfectly fine from Drive B. I have not attempted, however, to put the Gee effects into iMovie 6. As I said earlier, I haven't used the program on my computer since the Fall. Now, using 6.0.3, I don't see my GeeThree effects anywhere, nor have I tried to put them in. But, from the Drive B (and originally in the drive A), the movie plays fine even though the added clips are not present for me to use in any new project.

  • My finder quits when accessing my Drobo External Hard Drive iMac Dual Core 24"

My Finder Quits Every time I access my External Drobo 8TB Firewire Drive. I have several other FireWire Drives online with it and have no problem with them. This happened soon after the 10.7.2 update. I have a lot of files on this drive. Could it be the number of files that is causing the problem? Is there a Limit onnumber of folders on the surface of a drive? Please help if you can, I am desperate to preserve my software. But I need to do something soon, Or else I will have to just reformat the drive so I can use it again. I don't really want to do that.
Thanks in advance for any comments or cures.

I had the same problem but only after I upgraded to Lion. I could see the files on my external drive on other Macs using older software. It seems that Lion wasn't seeing old files on the external drive. So we accessed the files on a Mac using Snow Leopard, copied all the files into one new folder on the same external hard drive and now they're there on Lion. Problem solved! I hope this helps

  • Project will not open when saved to an external hard-drive

    Hi,
Well, as the title says, I cannot reopen a project when saved to an external hard-drive, it will however do so when I save to a local drive... Not good if you wanna work around several workstations, any ideas as to why?
    Thanks,
    Phil.

Are you using Final Cut Pro?
You should be asking on that forum. It would be beneficial if you provided some concrete information, what computer, what drives, how are they formatted, how are they connected, what exactly happens when you try to open it?

  • Moving Content to External Hard Drive and Using New Computers

Before doing this, I want to make sure I know how to do all of it:
We are going to buy two new laptops, and retire the old one. I want to move all of my iTunes content from the old laptop to an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme. I then want to be able to share the content between the two computers. I know how to do this, and plan to move the library data base files to the external hard drive, as well.
However, I also want to be able to continue synching all of the content to the Apple TV. To what should the Apple TV be synched after the content is moved to the external hard-drive and the old computer is replaced by two new computers? How is that done under the circumstances? And, in the meantime, will the Apple TV lose all of its content and need to be re-synched entirely from scratch, or will it continue recognizing the current iTunes library as moved to the external hard drive?
    Thanks!

This is an option, although as a note of caution; depending on how regularly you modify your library this could become a little bit of a chore. The option is likely a good one in many cases but not all.
In my own case I considered using an old mac as my media server in the sense mentioned by tmartine. (I do a bit of experimental stuff and need to restart my mac quite often, I also have 5 Apple tv's and a library which is too large to do anything but stream, my family don't take too kindly to my frequent restarts and I find myself waiting until the early hours).
However I also modify my itunes library on a daily basis, I buy quite a bit of stuff and also add my own movies regularly, as well as make several recordings a day through my eyetv, all this new content would need to be manually added to my (server) library (and deleted manually), I felt this would be too many extra things for me to do and so my personal preference is to have my itunes library on my main computer as the primary library.

Please help for I am not that computer savy and don't want to mess anything up.
    Thanks!

I called Apple Support and they walked me through it. They told me to basically copy and paste my music to the external hard drive. (I think.) Or maybe it was they had me transfer a folder to the EHD. I don't exactally remember it was a few years back. But I tried to plug in the EHD before starting and...nothing. Still says same thing, "locate file."

I have upgraded to Maverick.  With snow leopard when I connected an external hard drive, the Norton security would scan this drive. Since I have had Maverick this does not happen, I have updated my security.

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.
Check the drive with Disk Utility

  • Why does my computer slow down when I connect an external hard drive

I've been using a 2TB western digital external hard drive with USB connection.  It was working fine, but once it was up to 1.95TB, my macbook pro froze up.  Looking at my activity monitor,  my memory dropped to nil once the hard drive was connected.  The same hard drive works fine on my PC and I have no issues accessing all the files, just not on my mac. Any suggestions?

    Thanks Eustace,
When I disconnect the external hard drive, and look at the activity monitor, the memory climbs back up to about 4 to 6GB free.
    I have software system version: OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)

  • Moving songs from external hard drive to Itunes library

I have a bunch of songs on an external hard drive, but my itunes library is on my pc.....I tried to add some of these songs to my library (i played the songs and they were automatically added to the library)....but when i inplugged the external hard drive from my pc and tried to play the songs from the library, it would not let me play them.....an error message came up that stated that the library could not find the device from which the songs came from....why is this?....is there another way to add these songs from the hard drive????

    why is this?
The Windows version of iTunes doesn't copy content to the iTunes Music folder when importing from another hard disk by default. Connect the drive and choose Consolidate Library from th Library section of the File menu.

  • Unviewable iMovie projects after moving them to external hard drive

I moved my imovie 09 projects to an external hard drive using the finder window, did not move them in imovie and now they are unviewable in imovie. Is there any way will be able to view them again in imovie??? I thought maybe they needed to be in the internal hard drive for some reason, so I tried to move them back to "Movies" in my internal HD, but it didn't work either. I read in some other forums that they would not have their path links copied over if I did the moving in finder. Please tell me there's a way to recover my projects!

Well, you have a couple options. First shut down iTunes. Then unmount your HD. Then mount your external HD again, then after it pops up on your desktop, launch iTunes. Any files iTunes has that points to your ext. HD should play just fine.
Or, you can copy all your music to your ext. HD (if you don't already have it there), and simply delete your iTunes library (by removing your data files). You could then add to library, making sure you uncheck "copy itunes songs to music folder). This way, iTunes will only "point" to your ext. drive to play the music. If the drive isn't on, you don't get any music, and the "!" sign. If you have many playlists, this can be tricky.
As a rule, I don't go crazy with playlists, other than smart playlists. This way, you don't go nuts when you lose your data file, or want to do a clean update of your library. You'd be surprised at the times I thought I kept my library in tip-top shape, only to delete it and add the music again. I often find a song or two that I had hidden somewhere.

  • Moving imovie projects to external hard drive

To save space on my hard drive, I moved all my imovie projects to an external hard drive and then deleted them on my laptop. When I tried to import them again, imovie did not recognize them - they were grayed out and not importable. What did I do wrong? Is it possible that I needed to move all the event clips together with the projects?
I need to figure out how to remove movie material to keep memory open, but am not clear how to do it. . . What do the experts do about this?

Let's assume you have raw MP4 clips in an event.
You start a project and select portions of the clips to be in the project. You add titles, music, etc.
Then you Share/Using QuickTime in MP4 format. At this point, the movie is rendered by using the Project file as a roadmap to go our and get the right clips from the Event files, add the titles, add the music etc. and produce a single MP4 movie that you can play.
You may get better results if you use a variant of MP4 called h.264.
You can also adjust the color of the movie using the video adjustments. Also, if your raw material is MP4, you should realize that this is a highly compressed format. You may get better results if you use a free app like MPEG Streamclip to convert the MP4 file into Apple Intermediate Codec, then import this into iMovie. Then you create your movie as always. Then you can share it as an MP$ (h.264).
The MP4 codec has one full frame for every 24 or so frames. The rest of the frames contain information about what has changed from the prior frame, so iMovie must resolve and compute what all the frames are as it is adding the titles, adding music etc at render time - then reconverting to mp4.
If you convert it to Apple Intermediate Codec, every frame is converted to a full frame.
If your source material is low resolution, editing in MP4 is fine. But is your source material is high definition, you will definitely get better results by converting to full frames before editing.
That probably isn't very clear, but come back with additional questions if you like.

  • IMovie projects have broken link after I moved file on external hard drive

I have all my iMovie projects on an external hard drive, and it was working fine...until I accidentally broke the links by going into my external hard drive, creating a folder I named "Videos," and dumping the "iMovie Project" folder and the "iMovie Events" folder (which iMovie automatically created for me) into my new folder. I was just trying to consolidate everything into one folder, but that messed everything up. Once I realized what I had done, it would not let me press undo. Then I dragged the iMovie Project folder and the iMovie Events folder back onto the main part where they originally were, and that did not fix it.
Does anyone have any tips on getting my links back? I'd be so appreciative!! I have almost 200 projects of my kids that I can't access now. I have iMovie '11. Thanks so much.

The iMovie projects and iMovie Events folders have to be at the root (top) level of the drive they are on (or at the top level of  the User/Movies folder), otherwise iMovie 9 won't see them.
As long as you have not changed the contents of these folders, if you put them back at a root location they should automatically appear in iMovie.
    Geoff.
