Imovie '11 won't recognize Canon Vixia HF10

I have been trying forever to get my Computer to Recognize my Vixia. I was a little disappointed because supposidly the canon is supposed to be very compatible. Every thread I read says to connect the cam into a power source and connect it via USB and Imovie should automatically recognize it. It does not.
I should let you know I am trying to get clips off of it's hard drive.
I have tried import, Movies, selecting the camera and all those files are greyed out.
Any Ideas? It will not pop up automatically I don't know what to do.
Thanks
Emily

Sometimes the order in which you launch iMovie and connect the camera can make a difference. I always recommend going the extra step of having the camera attached to the wall, connected to the computer, powered on, then put into playback mode. THEN, start the computer up...
Launch iMovie once you see the desktop appear then go to the File Menu > Import from Camera...
Best practice for connecting the camera is usually to have it powered up and playing back before you even launch iMovie at the least.

  • Ingest from AVCHD Canon VIXIA HF10

After quite a bit of research I purchased a Canon VIXIA HF10 with the hope that FCE would ingest footage from the camera. However, FCE does not recognize the camera. I've also tried to capture once the program is open but it tells me it is "unable to initialize video deck". Any recommendations?

Is this the case with any AVCHD camcorder?
In general, yes. Some cameras shoot in a format called "AVCHD Lite" which need conversion for use in FCE. (BTW, FCE will transcode your AVCHD media into the Apple Intermediate Codec during ingestion which will greatly increase file size. Hope you have lots of free space!)

  • How do you Backup Canon VIXIA HF10 files for FCP?

    Hi,
I just bought a Canon VIXIA HF10, wonderful!!
I'm trying to import the captured/recorded files into FCP..i found that's a problem..
When i drag and drop all the files and folder on my desktop and when i deleted 1 of the file in the backup folder...Final Cut Pro unable to browse the whole folder for preview and even doesn't launch in the Log and Transfer window
How to solve this problem? how to delete the clips that i don't want and keep posible to launch in FCP? Deleted it on Camera before backup to computer? not really a good idea...
    HF10 users....helps...
    Thanks and Appreciate!

I have HF100. Do you mean make a backup of footage you take before editing? Or after editing? For footage before editing, I make an exact copy of the SDHC card from my camera and store that on an external harddrive. That is in the avchd codec (with file and directory structures intact). Therefore 8GB card = 8GB on Hard Drive. With the HF10 I believe it is possible to copy the files on Camera's Hard Drive to Camera's SDHC. Then you could follow my workflow. You will also find that you can point Log and Transfer to the stored copy on the drive and it will transcode to ProRes or AIC as you determine. The important thing to remember is to maintain the exact file and directory structure as the original.

  • Canon Vixia HF10 and importing into FCP

Can anyone tell me how to import from the Canon Vixia HF10's internal memory into FCP? It seems that there is only a USB connector on the camera and FCP only supports Firewire. Any suggestions?

    Dear Jerry,
I have the same issue. Just got the camera. I can copy the "private" folder which contains all the information which I believe is based on .MTS type files.
I was hoping that I could somehow just load these clips in directly as I used to use a canon miniDV which required me to play the entire clips.
I have mpegstreamclip but am not too familiar. Is there any other way other than having to convert each and every clip?
Thanks so much for any advice you can give me.

  • Canon vixia hf10 problem...

i am using the canon vixia hf10 camera. i upload the vids to premiere fine and whn they are on the right side and just under the "organize" spot they look fine. i drag them to the left into the timeline and they look horrible. they look all jumbled. They are all mixed up with a bunch of thick horizantal bars and i cant fix it. I have tried to check the boxes next to reverse field dominance and interlace consecutive frames, and it doesnt work. any ideas?

This sounds like a mismatch between your source footage, and your Project Preset.
If you do not know the full specs. of your source footage, you can use G-Spot, the free utility to get ALL of the details.
Please tell us the full specs. of your source footage. Next, tell us the exact specs., chosen when you did New Project. There is very likely a mismatch there, and it can easily be rectified.
    Good luck,

After installing 10.9.3 computer won't recognize Canon SD 1200 IS camera: get message "a camera was not detected".  Any suggestions?

I have an older Kodak which they have stopped supporting and I have to take out the SD card and put it in the card slot to download pictures.  I read other threads where this solved similar problems for others.  Some have a separate card reader but I just use the one on my imac.  Wish it was more convienent to get to it though.

  • Why won't iMovie recognize canon vixia hv40

I need to just simply get video off of my canon vixia hv40 with iMovie, but it won't recognize my video camera.

Are you using a Firewire cable to connect the camera to your MacBook Pro? Ensure also that there are no other Firewire devices connected to your MBP.

  • It won't support Canon Vixia HF S11

I tested capturing from my Canon Vixia HF S11 and it won't work. Is it supported?

One other thing I've recommended to people is with the camera plugged into the wall outlet, put the camera into playback mode. Just let the thing playback some video and run continuously, reboot the Mac. As soon as you see the desktop launch iMovie. Go to File Menu > Import from Camera. It might take an annoyingly large number of attempts following this first run. So just keep at it. Something will eventually trigger the Mac to recognize the camera eventually. Once it sees it the camera the first time it should work after that pretty consistently.

  • IMOVIE 6 won't recognize DV camera while IDVD is encoding or burning

I am in the process of encoding and burning a dvd in idvd 6. Given the length of this process, I want to also import some video into an imovie 6 project. However, while idvd is encoding, imovie won't recognize my camera.
I understand I can stop idvd, but then will I lose the encoding that has already occurred?
Will imove recognize the camera if I launch idvd after beginning the import into imovie?
Is there a software fix that will prevent idvd from monopolizing the firewire port when it is just encoding video from an imovie project?
This is a very irritating conflict given the time encoding takes in idvd.

As Sue suggests, it's not surprising that iDVD doesn't want you to access the camera with iMovie. It's not unusual for applications that perform FireWire-intensive functions—as both iDVD and iMovie do—to want to control the device. If iDVD can't control the camera, it may not be able to perform a task you want it to do. (Remember, iDVD offers several camcorder-dependent functions, including OneStep DVDs.)
While it may be a bit treacherous, you CAN go behind iDVD's back to get it done. The trick is to grab control of the camera before iDVD does. So Quit iDVD after you create, then save the iDVD project, then grab control of the camera with an iMovie HD project, THEN re-open the iDVD project and start encoding. (I tested exporting the iDVD project to a disk image, which is probably safer than burning a physical DVD. Use Disk Utility later to burn the disk image to a physical DVD.)
The iMovie video looked fine here, but your mileage may vary.

  • Acrobat 9 Standard won't recognize Canon Lide 200 Scanner

My recently installed Acrobat 9 Standard won't recognize my  Canon Lide 200 scanner even though Adobe Photoshop CS2 does.  I don't know what the problem is and how to solve it.

Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 was recently installed on new Vista 64bit computer and functions with all programs and even prints to my Dell 1600n printer, but when I try to scan from the printer, it causes this error message and shuts Acrobat down:
"ADOBE ACROBAT HAS STOPED WORKING A Problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have lived with this since I bought the computer a month ago. Still no solution from Adobe and no response to an email that I sent to adobe support.

  • Imac won't recognize canon camcorder

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 on my imac, running iMovie 11 ver. 9.0.4. I have a Canon Vixia HG21. It's worked fine for years, but about two months ago iMovie stopped recognizing the camera. The camera shows up on the desktop, but iMovie doesn't open, as it's supposed to and used to, and if I open iMovie myself and try to Import from Camera, it doesn't show up as an option. Image Capture will let me download photos, but I can't get the video off my camera. Any clues?

  • OS X 10.6.4 won't recognize Canon Powershot sd1000

I'm running OS X 10.6.4 on a Macbook pro, and it won't recognize my Canon powerbook sd1000 digital camera. I've updated the software, to no avail. Other cameras work too. I understand that I can move the card to a reader or another scanner; any tips on how to solve this problem directly?

I had the same problem at first. There is a switch on the back right side of the camera that selects camera, video, or playback. Switching it to playback caused it to be recognized by OSX.

  • IMovie '11 won't recognize Sony HDR-XR100

I know there are a hundred other threads on this subject, but I can't find the answer I am looking for. I am using fresh installed iMovie '11 (9.0.6) on an Intel Core 2 iMac with OS 10.7.4 the camera is a Sony DCR-XR100.
iMovie only seems to recognize the iMac's built in camera. If I opena new finder window, I can't even locate the HD on the camera. The cable definitely works because I can download photos from my Nikon, and also, it scolds me if I turn off the viseo camera while it is still connected to the camera.
The really frustratingt thing is that this was all so easy when I was using a mini-DV camera back in the day. Plug it in and import. I want to goet back to there. Is it possible to make this run seamlessly?

I've read dozens of help articles on this and am still nowhere. If I go to about this Mac and check USB devices, I can see that the camera is connected, but iMovie still does not recognize it. I also cannot look in the harddrive through by opening a new Finder window.

  • Anyone Use the Canon Vixia HF10 With iMovie?

Settled on this one after considering a Sony HDD model.
    Anyone have a view?

I don't own a camcorder, but I've read that iMovie 6 requires a camcorder with a firewire connection; yours apparently has USB? So that could be part of the problem; hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be able to address the question of the SDHC cards this camcorder uses. You may be able to get the files off the cards onto your desktop and then go from there. I own a Canon digital camera and have no problems getting the movie files on to the desktop and drag and drop them into iMovie.
