IMovie '13 - v.10.0 - exporting in SD (640 x 480)???

The new version of iMovie lost a lot of its features and is clearly focused toward the social media side of things. After importing using SD cameras that import video in a *square* PiP format, I am finding it impossible to update any of my settings to export the video in any other format that wouldn't cut out the picture. Basically, the only settings I've found in the share option of the iMovie 10.0 cu off the tops and bottoms of all my recording. Previously, I used QuickTime settings to pick what format and quality I wanted to export in. Does anyone have any insight about how to export using, say, a 640 x 480 format or in being able to adjust to any format other than the standard ones giving.
Is there any other video software I can be using to import and export with that gives me more functionality? I'd prefer to still with iMovie, but I don't know if it's possible with the new version.

You can still use the previous version of iMovie. That's what I'm doing until Apple releases an update that adds back missing features and fixes some of the problems people seem to be having. The old iMovie can be found here:

  • 640 x 480 Video Being Exported As 720 x 480

A few years ago I created (essentially) a video slide show in Final Cut Pro by importing 640dpi x 480dpi TIFF files and exporting them as a QuickTime movie. I'm trying to recreate the video using Final Cut Express HD, but every time I export the file, all of the 640dpi images are stretched to 720dpi. How do I export it as 640 x 480?

if you put a 640x480 image in the FCE timeline it will have a black edge around it because it's not standard format size. It's aspect ratio is adjusted to accommodate the change in pixel aspect ratio. You can see this in the Distort section of the Motion tab.
If the scale the image to fit the screen you're scaling it to 720x480 with its digital video aspect ratio. If you really want it 640x480, like for web display, then you have to export to QuickTime Conversion and use a custom size that 640x480.

  • Is there any easier way to edit imovie files that have been exported as mov file then added to FCE 4?? As every move I make has to be rendered and takes forever??? Also my recording is going out of focus without me touching the camera, why has this happen

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Titles work in iMovie but not after I export them

Everything seems to be working normally in my iMovie project but when I export the video, some of the titles are no longer readable (they seem too transparent). When I view the project is full screen mode - it works but once I finalize it and export it, the last few titles get messed up.
I cannot change the color of the text because I am using the "pixie dust" title (which is only in one color).
I have tried clearing the cache, closing iMovie, restaring my computer, duplicating the projects and deleting the old ones...
    What else can I do?
    THANK YOU!

Open it in QuickTime Player. Then press Command-I to open the Inspector.
Tell us what you see next to the word FORMAT: and also tell us the dimensions.

I tried full all kind of export: quality, mpeg4, but the result is not good. Help !
Must i play from IMOVIE? But the movie flikering because of the rendering in progress.
Must i change application? Can u help me?

Welcome fabrizio to the  iMovie boards ..
first of all: iMHD is optimized and meant for TV delivery.. interlaced, low res video on TVs.. therefore, the quality of an iM is never comparable with a HiRes still on a computer's screen..
knowing that, there's another issue: your FullQualiyt does contain FQ, but the QTplayer doesn't show it... the socalled 'high flag' for playback isn't set..
    example:
same file ( ! ), see the difference on playback, actual screenshots: 'high' not set (1), 'high' set in QTpro (Apple-J, video, playback high) pic#2 ...
free tools as Mpeg Streamclip allow to set the high-flag into a given .mov ...
last comment: for 'computer only' delivery, consider usage of 3rd party apps as Boinx' FotoMagico http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/

Export to Quicktime file in imoie 10 is explained here:

  • With iMovie 9.0.4 can export to .mov only. Rest of formats: error -50. What can I do? Thx.

Just as a preventative measure try running Disk Utility in the Utilities Folder inside the Applications Folder. Run Repair Disk Permissions on the whole hard drive.
According to this disuccsion group posting on MacRumours.com, Error -50 is a permissions error and repairing permissions may be enough to get you going again:

  • Is is OK to delete iMovie clips after they are exported?

I converted some iMovie clips to Quicktime to export to iWeb. Once that is done, can I then delete the original clip to regain that space?

As long as your QT Movies are "self-contained" and you no longer need either the project clips or the target files on your local computer there shouldn't be a problem deleting them.

  • Is iMovie '08 any better at exporting to Apple TV?

In iMovie '06, the option to export to a format optimized for Applet TV is buried deep inside Share -> Quicktime -> Expert Settings ...
Does iMovie '08 make it any easier?
I also heard something about creating movies that support multiple resolutions. Does that mean iMovie can create a single movie file that can be played at different resolutions (on the desktop, on iPod, on Apple TV)? That would be awesome.
    -jignesh

It seems slightly easier to convert to tv files in imovie 08, however I really wouldn't have thought the difference was worth paying for. imovie 08 is not an improvement on imovie HD it's essentially a new program, I don't like it, it's for really quick movie production and as much as imovie HD was a consumer application it is many many more times closer to a professional editing tool than imovie 08.
imovie 08 can't create a single movie that can be played at different resolutions but it can create several files with different resolutions with one click rather than having to export several times.

  • IMovie Won't Let Me Export?

    Hello!
My iMovie won't let me export in HD (1080p or 720p), which has proved to be very frustrating.
    It first starts exporting:
but then after a few minutes, a message comes up:
What do I do? I've spent ages on this video, and it's really irritating, for me to start it all over again! I've updated all of my software, checked the App store for updates for iMovie, but there's nothing! What do I do???? GAH!!
Please help! Thanks in advance! Thank you!

I have the same problem and then some. I movie won't share this particular project, but it also won't save any changes made to it or any other project. At least that's what it started doing, now when I go to even try to make any changes it wigs out and things get scrambled in the Project window and it plays video from another project.
When I create a new project, the Share menu is available, but it won't save changes to that project either. And by that I mean I can put stuff in the project and do whatever, but as soon as I quit and relaunch the application, the project is empty. I did figure out that if I make changes in a new project and immediately share it to the media browser that it will save the changes, but then it messes up my other project even more somehow!
Tried archive and install, deleting plists, reinstalling iMovie and iLife support stuff (twice), repairing permissions, and changing permissions in the project package. Any other ideas?

  • Why does the iMovie update now make it impossible to save in 640 by 480 ?

Just this week Imovie now wants to save / export my files in unusual formats instead of 640 by 480 - which is what I need to upload a longer video to Vimeo ( not Vimeo pro ) - Why has this been changed ?
( I do know that direct upload to Vimeo is possible - but sometimes I want to replace files - and that cannot be done directly )
Will this be addressed in an urgent update ?

    any other sugestions ?
That's too bad. You don't have a Time Machine or some other backup tucked away somewhere?
The new version of iMovie is a pretty complete re-write so a bit of three steps forward, two steps back in terms of features. Some may get added back with time but it's impossible to say when and if that may happen.
The easiest way to get back to what you were doing to find your self a copy of iMovie version 9. You can buy it on DVD from sites like Amazon.
Depending on what exactly you are doing you could see if QuickTime Pro 7 will do what you need.

    There's als Final Cut Pro 10, but that's a $300.
What kind of files are you trying to produce?

  • What's the best quality export for a 720 X 480 size, 24fps mp4 file?

    Whats the best quality export for a 720 X 480 size, 24fps mp4 file?
This movie trailer will be sent to a distributer overseas.
The export I been resorting to lately is MPEG 2 DV High Quality as oppose to anything HDTV because it just shrinks the picture, obviously lol
Do I have anymore options besides Mpeg 2: NTSC DV High Quality?

Lagarith is a codec that you install separately.  A very brief Search would have given you that info.
You can access the Lagarith option (once installed) using the Microsoft AVI format, and selecting Lagarith under Video Codec in the Video tab.

  • IMovie HD (6.0.3) - Export Quality and Editing Question

Hi guys, i wanted to ask two questions. The first is that i wanted to export videos to upload onto YouTube and the best format for this seems to be the CD-ROM format that is available on the version i have, the only thing is my videos still appear low quality and pixellated even though i am editing good quality videos......i was wondering if i was doing anything wrong/or can do something better?
Also, when i am editing, can i place logos or maybe pictures onto the video e.g. with TV channels they have a logo at the corner of the screen. I also wanted to black out text on screen but i don't seem to be able to do that.
    Thanks a lot.

QuickTime has never supported anything more than "playback" of MPEG-1 formats and conversions to QuickTime formats will never include audio.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-1 a "format" created a long time ago.
iMovie 7 can import and convert most MPEG-2 formats (DVD and HD media) and include audio. It also uses QuickTime for the work.
MPEG Streamclip does allow "batch" conversions. Do them while you sleep.

  • IMovie 6 will not Share/Export

I have successfully imported clips from my Sony HD camera. BUT iMovie 6 will NOT export nor share. Tried all possible options (even select clips only, reduced clip size down to 6 seconds). No luck. Any ideas what to do next? My computer is a new G5 Powermac desktop with 2 GB RAM. iLife 5 worked fine

If you open preferences, and select Play Movie Through Camera, you can export withut using Share. I have succeeded to export iMovie HD 6 projects this way. Before doing so, restart your computer, to give iMovie a clean start. I can playback my project through a Canopus converter this way without using Share.
I hope this helps. If iMovie HD 6 ever crashes, simply Restart your computer and try again.
    Good luck and best wishes,
    Gavin Bantock

  • IMovie for iOS 2.0 export doesn't work. Anyone else have this problem and how do you fix it?

It seems that I can export projects that are very short (less than a minute) but anything longer than that simply shows the export progress bar and then never makes any progress. I've left it sitting there for an hour and it never moved. This also means I can't upload anything to YouTube. It was working fine last week when I exported a five minute video in 1080p, but now I can't even export a three minute video in the lowest quality option.
I'm using iMovie 2.0 on my iPad and iPhone and the issue is present on both devices, even though it was working fine last week.
I have already uninstalled the application, reinstalled it, and it still won't export any of my projects.
Oh, and Apple removed the ability to open iMovie iOS projects in iMovie for Mac because that feature made way too much sense.

Then you should provide the information requested by lllaass so that people have information on which to base a diagnosis. I'd suggest you start a new topic with your issue (use the "Start a discussion" link under the Actions header at the upper-right of each main topic page). It's generally better to ask a question as a new topic rather than as a reply in someone else's thread. It's more courteous to the original poster, and is more likely to get your question the attention it deserves.
