IMovie 2013: can't add cross dissolve to video

I have tried everything. I want to add a cross dissolve between to clips. The auto add is off. Help!

GeeD is right,
When you have two clips on the time line, one above the other, iMovie doesn't let you use transitions on the clip sitting above the timeline. This is more like how Final Cut Pro works with multi-tracks of video/audio on the timeline. The workaround is as stated to do split clip at time line and "Insert" the video at that location in the main video clip. Once everything's on 1 timeline, you can insert a transition as needed.

  • A way to add cross-dissolves to a bunch of different, non-sequential clips?

    Hey mac geniuses,
Is there a way to add cross-dissolves to a bunch of non-sequential clips? Basically, one of my three video tracks features a different image for a few seconds every minute or so (they're slides from a presentation), and I'd like to be able to add a cross-dissolve at the beginning and end of each image.
Is there a way to do those transitions all at once considering they're not back to back?
    Thanks for your help!

Select the clips on the track with the track forward tool and press Cmd-T, assuming the current version.

How can I add new songs and videos to my ipod without syncing as it wants to wipe out the ipod and replace all the existing media?

On the ipod itself?  If so how?
I've tried checking on box by the sync music to deselect "Entire music library", but get the  message about "Are sure.... All existing content on the iPod will be removed and replaced...".  However, I don't want to do that as there is music on my ipod I don't want to loose, got it from a previous computer that crashed and could not be recovered.

Thanks for getting your details posted. Good job.

I am simply wanting to “overlay” a new visual element without disturbing the underlying audio.
A classical way to do a Premiere Elements Overlay is to hold down the Ctrl key of the computer main keyboard and drag the new clip over the area of the one you want to replace on the Timeline. That should not do anything but replace one portion of the video on the Timeline. No change in duration video or audio track if you are dealing with video linked to audio.
If you hold down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard, I am envising a scenario where you want to add to (not replace) some Timeline content.
A just in case note, if you have video on Video 1 and 2 and the video in 2 does not have transparent areas in it, then all you will see is the Video 2 content. I believe that Hunt eluded to that concept as a possible technique for what you might be doing.
Another just in case, if you have not seen the following Adobe documentation on arranging clips, you might be interested in the following link

    Thanks Shane,
Is it OK to add the video layers while I an still cutting the multicam or do i need to wait until its done?
I've played around a little and see that it is possible without disturbing the multicam's, but I'm very wary of screwing it up if I do a lot of it.

  • FCP won't add cross dissolve transition to clips

After putting two Quicktime clips into FCP, I attempted to add a cross dissolve transition in between the two clips. When I dragged the cross dissolve transition to the two clips, nothing happened. That transition had been used before, and as far as I can tell, nothing was different this time than all the previous times. For some odd reason, FCP refuses to add the transition to those clips.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on what could have happened? More importantly, is there a way to work around this problem?
    Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This is a problem when you do not edit down your raw clips and drop them into the timeline as they have been captured.
    The operative concept is 'handles'.
For transitions to work, you need enough unused footage AFTER the OUT point of first (outgoing) clip and BEFORE the IN point of the second (incoming) clip.
Drop the first clip into the Viewer and set an OUT point 30 frames or so from the end of the clip. Drop the second clip into the Viewer and set the IN point 30 frames or so past the beginning of the clip.
Now try to place your transition.

  • Can't Apply Cross-Dissolve to Some Footage

I'm working on a project in FCP X and for some reason, it won't let me apply cross-dissolves to certain clips.  There is no warning when I try to add a cross-dissolve, it just doesn't appear.  I'm having no trouble with the earlier parts of my project and some later bits as well.
The timeline is very simple and the clips are long enough to allow cross-dissolves.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I think I know the answer (because I just bought FCP X and was having the problem on some projects.)
First, when you move the cursor to the edit points, it should change to a left or right bracket WITH a short film strip coming off the side of it. When I was having the problem, this didn't show up.
    The reason!......
The video was not dropped on the correct LAYER of the timeline.
This happened to me when I first put down music (audio) then the video. The Music wound up on the timeline were the video should be.
When you look at an empty timeline, you'll see a dark horizonal line to drop your video and a lighter area above and below it. Make sure your video is put on the dark line.
    Hope that resolves your problem.

  • Can't add a dissolve between clips in FCP 4.5

I do animations and we shoot hundreds of stills with a digital camera to record a "shot" in a scene then import them all to FCP 4.5 with the still image duration set to 2 frames. This gives a sort of 12 frames a second speed to the animations which is ok for our purposes.
Then we export the timeline as a qt mov file and use that like it was a single video clip in another sequence in FCP to build up the final project.
When I try to add a dissolve or any other video transition between two of these clips, it won't work.
If there is a gap between the clips, I can add a dissolve at either end of the clip and this looks like a fade out or fade in, but if the clips are touching then I can't add any transition.
I have also tried nesting the sequence with all of the still images into a new sequence so that the stills are treated as a single clip in the new sequence, but this doesn't solve the problem and I can't add transitions between those clips either.
The computers are G5 Mac Pros running Tiger 10.4.10 and FCP is version 4.5
Can anyone please explain what is wrong or how to fix it?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

One way to do dissolves is to put the clips in different video tracks and overlap them (that is, handles by the duration of the "dissolve" you want to implement.
Then use an opacity ramp to fade on out as you fade the other one up.
I find that doing dissolves this way means that I don't have to set the in and out points with a transition in mind, and it easy to slide the clips around to get the exact effect want.
To do opacity ramps, you need to set the sequence setting "timeline options" set to show keyframe overlays. That will put a black line on the video timeline for each clip on each track. When dragged to the top, it is 100% opaque; at the bottom it is 100% transparent. You use the little "ink pen" to put keyframe handles on the timeline opacity line and you can then gradually increase/decrease the ramp as you see fit, including rounding the corners to make it smoother.
As other noted, it may be easier to just make sure you have the right amount of "handle" (video beyond the in and out points) and do one of the built in dissolves; I find that if I don't like the timing I've chosen, it is more work to fiddle around with the in/out points (for example, by putting the clip in question on another video track and dragging the ends out or in).
Experiment with different methods and use the one which works best for you.

  • Mass Add Cross Dissolve

Hi, I did a multi-clip edit and now have al of the cuts. Is there a way to have Final Cut go through and Add a cross dissolve transition after ever cut. So when it switches from angle to angle it cross dissolves. I am sure there is any easy way to do this (without doing it manually). But I am very very new to FCP so any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Just collapse the multiclip edit before you add the transitions.

  • FCP won't add cross-dissolve

I know everybody has this problem, and I've read about handles countless times.
I fully understand the concept of handles, I just have no idea how to apply that
knowledge in FCP. I am not getting any type of error message at all, it simply
does not do anything when I tell it to insert a cross-dissolve.
Explanations will not help. What I need is a step by step list of what to do.
(click here on this menu, type that, etc.)

    Hi -
    Qbert wrote:
I have to apply a transition before I can adjust its duration right? I can't apply a transition at all...
All I am doing is bringing in 2 clips (not edited) placing them on the timeline, and adding
    a cross-dissolve, which usually works.
That's the problem. If you place the complete clip on the timeline, there is no room for the dissolve to work - it needs to have material "after" the end point of the clip, but since you have placed the total clip on the timeline, there is none for the transition to work with.
    Try this:
Put your first clip on the timeline.
Click on the end of the clip, so the end is highlighted.
    Type "- 30"
Now, a little further down the timeline, place your second clip.
Click on the start of that clip, so the start is highlighted and type "+30".
Now click in the center of the second clip and drag it to where the two clips are touching.
Click on the cut point that is between the two clips and type "Command - T"
You should now have a 30 frame dissolve between those two clips.
If you want to make the transition shorter, Control-click on the transition and adjust the duration.
I really wish the program would let you apply faulty dissolves and then fix them after they're applied.
Well, that is an interesting wish, but I think once you get the hang of it and are clear about how a transition work, this won't be a problem for you.

  • Purchased iMovie 2013 - Can I downgrade to iMovie '11

I was searching for a video editor that had certain features that my son needed for his school project and came across a number of iMovie '11 (v9) articles online that showed this application had the features I was looking for.  So I rushed to the App store and purchased iMovie which I later found out was iMovie 2013 (v10), which hadn't received very favourable reviews.
I wanted to know if it was possible to purchase or downgrade to iMovie '11 and so I contacted App support who were willing to provide me with a refund, but couldn't answer my question and just referred me to http://www.apple.com/support/mac-apps/imovie/.  Does anyone know if downgrading to iMovie '11 is possible when it wasn't initially installed?
    Thanks.

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve: The video cuts out during the transistion

I'm encountering a problem with the Cross Dissolve transistion wherein during the period in which the transition should be happening the video instead drops out.  There's plenty of heads and tails available on both clips, but as soon as the timeline hits the start of the transition "from' clip cuts out, revealing the background or black if there's no background underneath and then the "go-to" clip cuts in at the end of the transition.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I've been having this issue and it's driving me crazy.  It's random, that some cross dissolves work, and others don't.  Seems to affect AVCHD footage.  Adobe seems to be aware of the issue.
The work around that I've seen posted by a forum user "Mitch W" is to apply a GPU accelerated effect to one of the clips in the pair.  The effect can be turned to "0" so as not to alter the video.  The act of doing this, makes premiere see the clip differently, and render the cross dissolve correctly.
Fast Blur, set to "zero", seems to do the trick, and allows it to work with CUDA acceleration turned on.  I did notice that the work around was broken by changing the playback resolution in the viewer window.  In that situation, I had to apply the GPU effect to the other clip in the pair to make it work again.
I don't know what will happen if I change my playback resolution again...

  • Can I import movies originating from video's that were put on a DVD import in IMovie?, Can I import movies originating from video's that were put on a DVD import in IMovie?

Can I import movies originating from video's that were put on a DVD import into IMovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Weird Cross Dissolve From Video to Image Causes Video to Fade Left!!

    Hello.
Since the snippet of video was not long enough I had to extend time by creating a still frame. That part worked great. No issues.
However once I added the cross dissolve going from the video to the image and then again from the image ot the next video  snippet -- it fadically shifts the frame of the video going left as it fades.
At roughly 2:26 of this flv video. www.lockwoodarc.org/mwhittmore/LARC_Alaska.flv
Where you see the rear of the jeep and the tag line "Adios Alaska".
It's my first ever video edit so don't laugh.  It's the best I could do given all the garage I hd to work with.
Any other suggestions are appreciated too.
    Marc

What I do is extend my 2nd and 3rd track clips beyond the cut point, then disable the right side of the cut on tracks 2 and 3.
I then line up the dissolve across the three tracks. This works great, especially if I want to maintain the continuity of the disabled tracks for later use.
I use different methods depending on how much work I want to do, what I have available in front of me and any other effects at that particular point in time.

  • How can I add time to my video?

I have an animation that I rendered out of 3DS MAX. It took 32 hours to output. The animation has movement, then freezes, then moves again. ect, ect... Currently the time where it is "frozen" is about 2 seconds. I need to extend that to 4 seconds.
How can I take a section of video and stretch the time it takes to play that section.
Other useful information. The whole animation was rendered as an image sequence. If all else fails, I could chop up the video, inset single images where I need more time and stretch the length of that image and continue the video on the other end of that image. I need to do this about 10 times...so the easiest way for me will be the best way.
    Thanks,
    Dean

Do you need to maintain an image sequence? Usually the answer to that is no.
Convert to a movie format and just use timeremapping to give yourself some stretches. You just set hold keyframes in the time parameter.
This can also be accomplished by precomposing the image sequence and applying time keyframes to the precomp.
