IMovie 3,4 and 5 drops frames

Hi Boffs,
iMovie was dropping frames while importing from my Canon DV. Did the filevault thing, unplugged all the other firewire items, no change. My ibook 1.2 Ghz G4 running 10.3.5 was fine though, and if I import on the laptop, burn a CD of the (very small) iMovie file and try to play it on the G3, it still drops frames. Am I simply a victim of slower processor speeds? Surely other people on here have used iMovie on a G3? There is no improvement for other versions of iMovie (well at least 3 & 5)
Thanks if you can help
Tim

OK, you have two problems, one cosmetic and one serious.
The cosmetic problem is playback on the 450Mhz. It doesn't affect the quality of the video itself.
The serious problem is exporting back to tape on the 450MHz. This can be avoided by taking the external FW disk to the iBook.
Your iMac should be able to handle iMovie 4:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93598
You are above the minimum specs.
Are you running anything else but iMovie? Playing music in iTunes? Your Fax app waiting for incoming faxes? iPhoto running? Surfing the web?
How about a little housekeeping?

  • Drop Frame and Non Drop Frame

Does QuickTime Pro 7 allow you to select between drop frame and non-drop frame?

    I don't understand your question.
QuickTime Player will automatically reduce the implied frame rate to maintain the file playing. You can observe this by viewing any HD movie trailer on a non supported OS.
Frame rate drops so much that the file is nearly not viewable yet the audio portion continues to play back without issue.
The QuickTime author can't set these parameters and QuickTime Pro users can override the issue by selecting to "Play All Frames". This can quickly bring playback to its knees on older systems but it will not drop any frame during playback. It may take two days to view each frame of a 1080 HD movie trailer on a G3 but you should see each one.

  • Linux: flash 10.2 and crystalhd dropping frames @1080p

I'm testing through the adobe stage demo video page the performance of the new plugin using a CrystalHD minipci-e card under linux.
It works somewhat ok @ 720p, as I can see 25fps in the video info window and no dropped frames. CPU usage is 20% in a SL9400 with a 4500MHD.
The problem is that in 1080p I get 4 video fps and lots of dropped frames. Shouldn't this be faster?
On the other hand... why the stage fps stay at 10fps?

Hi, if you have the 10.2 beta, you may want to look at this forum as they have info on Linux.

  • Edit to tape confusing drop frame and non drop frame

This is a re-creation of a dead thread I found from June 6, 2006. This is the exact problem this other user was having.
    OS 10.4.7
    FCP 5.0.4
    Dual G5 2.5
    4.5 GB RAM
    KONALH
Trying to edit to a Sony DVW-A500 (Digibeta) in Drop Frame mode.
    Read Below for deets.
Problem: When working with a drop-frame sequence, and editing to tape, the program is edited to the tape with an offset of 3 seconds and 18 frames at the end of one hour.
    Reproducible: Yes.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Create a drop-frame sequence.
    2. Edit the sequence in step 1.
    3. Perform an edit to tape with the sequence edited in step 2.
What should happen: The sequence should be edited to tape at the time it occurs in the timeline.
What does happen: The sequence is edited to the tape 3 seconds and 18 frames after it should be!
Other observations: 3 seconds and 18 frames is exactly how much time is not in an hour of drop-frame time when compared to non-drop frame time. If you drop two (2) frames in every minute that does not end in zero, the math works out to 2*54=108 dropped frames in an hour. For the sake of simple mathematics, lets say there are 30 frames in a second. So 108/30= 3 with a remainder of 18, or 3 seconds and 18 frames.
It's as if FCP is getting confused about drop and non-drop timecode when the sequence is drop-frame. If anyone can offer any insights, confirmation, or resolutions for what I am seeing, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks for reading!

So is the timeline a drop frame timeline, starting at 1:00:00:00?
And then is the DBeta tape prestriped (at least enough to do an assemble edit) to start the program at 01:00:00:00?
In other words, is the FCP timeline timecode matching the Dbeta tape timecode in a 1:1 relationship before you attempt to Edit to Tape?
Thinking further: FCP can't really confuse the two timecodes, it's dependent on the operator to tell it what to do. When it outputs it's not outputing timecode or looking even really looking for timecode. It's looking for your IN point in the Edit to Tape tool.

  • Mixing Drop Frame and Non Drop Frame In One Timeline

We did a 7-camera multicam shoot of a rock concert over the weekend. Upon capturing we realized two of our camera operators were shooting Non Drop Frame mode while the remaining 5 were shooting drop frame. Can someone describe to me how I can eventually get all seven cameras into one timeline? I realize I might have to output/convert the non drop frame stuff. And since we're one the topic, I'd also like to ask (in case I find this out later) what I might do if we find a camera that shot 24P (29.97). Thanks in advance!
    G5 DUAL QUAD & 2 X Power PC G4 (Dual 533) & 550 TiBook   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

There is nothing different about the footage from the cameras...they all run at 29.97fps. The only difference is in the way the timecode NUMBERS are treated. Drop frame code simply loses 2 numbers (00 and 01) every minute except for every 10th minute. That's it. They all run at the same speed, so putting them all in the same timeline shouldn't cause any problems.
Trying to make a multiclip based on timecode will be a problem, however. You will have to find a common frame on all and use that.

  • XSAN and FCP5 - Drops frames during capture

We are trying to capture video directly to an XSAN volume from FCP, and we get dropped frames usually within 5 minutes. Capturing to local HD works fine.
We've been dealing with these problems on and off ever since we got the XSAN. We've 'tuned' our fiber switch, reinstalled 10.4 and FCP and the XSAN software from scratch, ran all the updates to the latest stuff, and still no loving from the SAN environment.
I'm coming to the conclusion that this just doesn't work - does anyone else capture from a DV deck directly to a SAN volume successfully? If so, any hints or tips about what / where I might turn to get this working??
    Thanks!

    Derrick,
I have successfully captured from SDI with 8 Channels of Embedded Audio through the AJA I/O into the DV Codec (which ends up being 4.5 Mb/S) for more than an hour without a problem (directly to Xsan Volume).
If you are hitting a wall about 5 minutes everytime, it sounds like the cache in the controllers on the Xraid are filling up (1 Gig = 5 minutes of DV) and not writing to the drives properly.
I might sound far fetched, but just a though.

  • Final Cut Pro and EditShare - Dropped Frames

    Hey,
My Company just got a new EditShare File Sharing server. It's a 5 Rack with 24 drives, for a total of 18TB of space. The problem is, when we're trying to capture straight to the ES (which has 8 RAIDS) there are Dropped Frame Errors appearing. We've tried turning the Internet off, and even re-organized the connection preferences so the ES is the first to be refreshed, but we're still having dropped frames. Info:
    Final Cut Pro - 5.1.2
Capturing from a DVCPRO 50 Deck thru Firewire
    EditShare - 4.0.2
    G5 Mac with OS 10.4.7
note Didn't get so many dropped frames when using LaCie Drives. Could be connection speed or not enough broadband. Any Suggestions? Thanks.
    FraserPost

I believe it's fiber, but not sure. We're also checking because the Gigabit switch has 3 settings, 10/100/1000 gigabits, so it could be at a lower setting, and that's causing a backup in the broadband speed. We're also noticing that the transfer rate from our External HDs (which we were capturing to before) to the ES was slower than anticipated.
Anyone else find this problem with an EditShare or File Sharing server?
    Just checked, it's CAT6 cables.

  • Ran Software Updates and Now Drop Frames during Playback

I updated all of my Software back in late December. Since I have updated, all projects (old and new created ones) within Final Cut drop frames during playback. I had no issues with drop frames until I ran the Software Updates. Currently running Leopard 10.5.6, Final Cut 6.0.5, Quicktime 7.5.5. Any suggestions on how to determine why I now have drop frames. Is there an easy way to revert back to software that was in place prior to me running Software Updates on 12/22/08?
Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

First, you should have an up-to-date tested reliable backup. The best way to do it is to get an external Firewire HDD, clone you entire computer to is using SuperDuper, then keep it up-do-date.

  • Exporting different FPS of one clip FCP and compressor dropping frames HELP

Hi all I'm posting this because I have no Idea what I'm doing wrong I'm trying to export my HD file from FCP as a quicktime H264 in 30fps and 24p of the same file. My client needs it in quicktime format but when I export in both FCP using quicktime conversion and compressor the fps playback is 12fps...8fps?. I've exported before not as quicktime with no problem. NTSC 29.97 version and PAL 25p of the same file in quicktime exported with no problem but the HD 1080 at 30fps and 24p wont work. Any advise or suggestions would be great....

Oh sorry, I've digitized my file from HD mini DV cam with FCP. I captured as HDV 30fps from the camera to FCP. I had no problems exporting with Apple HDV codec into different size and frame rates but trying to do the quicktime H264 at 30fps and 24p 1920x1080 is not working frames are dropping I do the same settings in compressor and still doesn't work.

  • Dropped frames - iMovie vs FCE only from Canon, not Sony

I have tapes shot on my new Canon Elura 100, SD, that import without complaint into iMovie but show lots of dropped frames in Final Cut Express. Imports from by onld Sony TRV never have a problem. Any idea what is going on?
Note - I used a Sony TRV-30 for years without a problem. I just picked up a Canon Elura 100. Now I get dropped frames all over the place on FCE import for tapes shot with the Canon. Out of interest I tried importing the tape shot on the Canon using my old Sony and I get the same problem. Tapes shot on the Sony have no problem. So evidently there is something on the Canon recorded tapes FCE does not like. The playback appears fine. iMovie import goes without a hitch. FCE I get a dropped frames notice and there are pauses in the playback of the imported video.

I rechecked and saw I was also starting to get dropped frames with the Sony, something I had not seen in years. Evidently there is something in my system now (perhaps 10.4.9?) that FCE2 does not like. I rebooted to an older installatioin of 10.3.9 and now both cameras are coming in without dropped frames.
Note: there were other Firewire devices connected, but not powered up.
I did not try changing the setup. Once I was in 10.3.9 everything came in.

  • Problems working with non drop and drop frame DVCPRO HD material in project

I am having playback problems with my non drop frame HDV material. It stutters.
All of our projects up to this point have been shot in drop frame. During our last shoot however the Bcam was recorded in non drop. I loaded both the non drop bcam tapes as non drop and the drop frame Acam tapes as drop. All of the drop frame Acam material plays back fine in the source viewer and the timeline. The non drop Bcam material seems to randomly stutter in the source viewer, or causes the system to serve a "dropped frames warning" in the timeline.
Is there a bug with fcp 5.1.2 about mixing non drop and drop frame material in a project. Or is this not possible? They are the same frame rate.
I have exported the non drop clips in a drop frame timeline and re-imported them as drop frame clips - thus correcting the problem. Is this the best solution?
All of the material was loaded thru a kona card as 1080i60 DVCPROHD 29.97
I had no problems capturing the material as long as I used the corrrect firewire setting (ndf vs df).
Anyone have a problem like this? I would greatly appreciate a response.
    Thanks,
    Mark

The camera can record 60i, and 30F:
"HDV 1080, 50i/60i/30F/25F Recording and Playback capable"
Look at the clips...look at their frame rates. What do they say? Is one 59.94? Is the other 29.97?
You would never need to render if you mixed NDF and DF footage. The footage runs at the same speed, on the TC numbers are different. But, you would need to render if your footage had different frame rates. LOOK AT THE CLIPS.

  • Dropped Frames and Sluggish Performance since 10.0.6

Hey all, I am having a rough time since the latest update and I can't seem to figure out what to do next. I am working on a project and it seems that I am stuck on how to proceed. I was working fine with my set up until a couple days ago..
I have a high end 27' iMac quad i7 3.4 with 16gb of ram and a 1gb graphcis card and mountain lion
I run my media off of a Drobo S via firewire 800, which had two 3tb bay to start with and just recently added another 2 3 tb drives.
All of my footage comes from a Canon 7D DSLR and when imported is checked off to optimize media to make things run faster and at better performance.
After running the latest update it seems that everything in fcpx just crawls. I can play a clip in the event browser just fine, but when I try to play a timeline that I had made just days before it chokes and starts dropping frames immediately. I cant edit with the dropped frames and sluggish reaction that im getting.
So far I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCPX, and I have accessed my Drobo from my 15" Retina that also has 10.6 and it also crawls at the same snails pace when trying to play my projects.
These steps have led me to believe that it is not the machine itself, but with no guidance on what else it could be. I know everyone has been saying that the new update has provided great performacne boosts and speed enhancements and stability however i seem to have taken a wrong turn somewhere as I am getting the exact opposite, HELP!
    Mike

So after thinking more about it I believe I have narrowed down the issue and that is "bad timing". Part of my issue was that I updated to 10.0.6 last night as well as added in 2 new 3tb drives into my drobo. This made it harder for me to narrow my issue. Assuming 10.0.6 is fine, that means that the Drobo would be my problem. After consulting Drobo Support, I have discovered that when adding new drives to a a Drobo the system needs time (lots of it) to re-allocate and index the previously loaded content. So the footage on the Drobo needs time to be moved and placed onto the new drives. Unfortunately this was never explained, nor was there any sort of progress bar to show that this was happeneing.
In short this means I was trying access my Drobo (where my content is stored) WHILE my Drobo was reallocating and moving that content around internally among its 4 drives. I would like to say this is the exact answer for what has been happening but unfortunately until it is done "allocating" (which Drobo estimates to be 24-36 hours) I will not be able ot fully test this theory.
Just thought i'd post an update for anyone else who ever gets stuck on Drobo related questions.

  • KB Effect dropping frames

The KB effect is consistently dropping frames on the render, with a black frame or a bunch of black frames appearing in the final rendered clip. Is anyone else experienceing this?
When I first started used '06, it happened about every other time I did a KB, and it could be fixed by making a slight change in the KB setting and re-rendering it by hitting 'update'. Now, it seems to be getting worse. I just re-rendered the same clip with slightly different KB setting 5 times in a row, and got dropped frames iin different places on every single one. What a pain.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Does it sound like an iMovie bug, or an issue with my system? (PS, this never happened until I upgraded to '06. Other than the software update, everything else has remained the same. I also use a scratch HD for editing). System specs: Dual 867 MDD powermac, with 4 internal HDs for scratch space, 1.5 GB RAM (Well within the specs recommended for iMovie).
    Thanks
PS - I am really having a hard time not getting negative about Apple. iMovie was a big part of why I switched to Mac 3 years ago, and ever since iMovie2, this app has gone downhill in terms of bugs and usability. Apple should be embarrased at the number of glitches in this.

Do you have any third-party QuickTime add-ons installed? Users have reported lots of weird problems associated with any of these: 3ivx, Divx, Flip4Mac. If so, remove them and Restart your Mac.
They may be located in the Hard Disk>Library>QuickTime folder, or your User>Library>QuickTime folder.
And remove any third-party iMovie plug-ins too.

  • Drop frame video to non-drop frame clip warning (again)

So my most recent search of why this warning comes up reveals no good answers (unless someone can point me to a thread I overlooked...cuz I can't narrow it down without getting threads about folks who have gotten dropped frames during capture, which isn't the same situation)...
I shoot on an XL2 (drop frame) and capture with a DSR-11. Once in a while I will finish going through log and capture (in the log and capture window), setting ins, outs, etc. but I go to batch capture and it gives me the warning. All my ins/outs have semi-colons, I haven't changed the setting on my camera since I started using it more than 18 months ago, and it doesn't happen all the time. I do have the "abort capture on dropped frames" box unchecked as well (if that matters).
99.99% of the time, I've captured and there's no problems with syncing or anything. Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

If I recall right someone suggest to have your tape playing while opening Log and Capture, but I might recall wrong
I already have the "Abort on dropped frames" and "report dropped frames" unchecked.
Don't be mistaken: Dropped frames are a totally different issue from non-drop and drop frame timecode.
Drop frame timecode drops (or better: skips) timcodenumbers while counting the videoframes. That is a system to compensate for the 29,97 frames per second in order to calculate the correct length of a clip.
Dropped frames (as in "Abort on dropped frames" and "report dropped frames") is an error. Due to some reason the hardware isn't capable to record/digitize every single videoframe to your harddisk. e.g. Your captured file will have 2000 frames, while your footage on tape had 2003. Three frames were dropped then during capture. And your video will noticeble stutter at these points.
So I'd strongly recommend to do check the "Abort on dropped frames" and "report dropped frames"-options. You don't want stuttering video do you. So if your hardware couldn't handle the videofeed somehow, it would resp. abort capture or warn you that it happened.

  • Drop Frames when Printing to Video

I know there are a lot of topics on drop frames, but I couldn't find any that met my specific set of circumstances.
My video plays fine and there is no red bar indicating that something has to be rendered. However, when I try to print to video, ten seconds in, the project is aborted and a drop frame error is given.
Is there anything I can do to get around this?
    Thanks.

I don't know the specs of your machine however...
Alternatevely you could open the RT dropdown menu
and turn playback video quality and playback frame rate to the minimum and close
    other projects.
