IMovie 5 - new clips at each hour

Hello,
I often get final picture edits on tape, and these need to be converted to QT for a chase computer in an audio post workflow. I'm currently using iMovie HD (v5.02) for this through a Canopus ADVC-100 firewire box.
iMovie5 always starts a new clip at a few seconds past each hour of import - so a 2h30m program would have 3 clips. This is a problem because to make one long QT movie takes a long time to render and occupies double the disk space. I've heard there are third-party QT file-combiners, but other than being nervous they'll skip a frame they still take a while and require double the disk space because they generate a new file. For programs shorter than one hour I go to the project, Show Package Contents, and remove the DV file for use. This skips the slow render process.
At someone's helpful suggestion I've tried the freeware Vidi import app and it works as I need it to, but it's very basic (probably why it does well) without an elapsed time counter, something I'd like to have. iMovie does nicely but I need to figure out how to import one long file.
Is there any way to get iMovie to stop generating a new clip at each hour? Of course I uncheck the "new clip at scene breaks" although that wouldn't affect it because it's one long program, and it's time related not scene-related.
Does iMovie 6 do the same thing? If I upgrade will it import as one long file?
Thanks
Hugh

Hello,
Thanks both of you for the info, the iMovie limitation is what I wanted to know. I've tried Vidi, a freeware capture app, and it seems to do fine but I'm hoping to get a few more features. I'll also give BTVPro a try. I've tried recording directly in QTPro and it's crashed a couple of times so I'm concerned about introducing it into a real workflow. You may be right, maybe FCP is the next step but since I'm only interested in continuous import I'm trying other options first.
I'll also take a look at the cache solution you mentioned. It will occupy more disk space but may be fast enough.
Thanks again,
Hugh

  • Where is the import option for "Start a new clip at each scene break" in iMovie 2013?

I am currently in the process of importing several mini-DV tapes via firewire into iMovie 2013. I have the most recent version of iMovie and am using a Sony Handycam to facilitate the transfer. The problem I am having is that when I hit import, iMovie splits what is supposed to be a single scene into multiple scenes ranging anywhere from a second to 5 minutes. I am left with several scene chunks that I cannot combine into one. I did a little research and found that iMovie is probably deinterlacing my scenes as it mistakes them for multiple scene breaks. In the older iMovie options, all I had to do was to go to "Preferences" -> "Import" -> then deselect "Start a new clip at each scene break". However, this option doesn't appear to be available in iMovie 2013. Is there a way I can force iMovie 2013 to import a single scene from my mini-DV camcorder without breaking it into multiple clips? Thanks!

1st : this is the wrong forum, this is iMovie for ipod/iphone and ipad ( iOS is the OSX mobile Operating System )
2nd : iMovie 11 is the current OSX version.  iMovie 06 was the last of its kind, all newer, including iMovie 09 have complete new workflow, so functions of 06 are gone and have replaced with others.

  • Automatic new clip at each scene break iMovie08

I wish to import a completed movie into iMovie08 and share it. Unfortunately iMovie starts a new clip whenever there is a change in the time code. Then to make things worse it appears to sort the clips into time code order. I wish to import the whole movie as one clip as the movie has already been edited etc and is complete. As in iMovie HD is there an option which allows you to stop iMovie08 splitting the movie into separate clips.

Thanks for your response. I did resolve the problem by capturing the video with Final Cut Express then exporting to QT and then to iMovie08 which to my mind was a long winded way of doing it. I have since discovered that I could also have capture the video on QT thus leaving out Final Cut Express.
Perhaps it is not possible to do what I wanted todo and that was using iMovie08 for a seamless result.
    Thanks again

  • Can't stop "Start new clip at each scene break"

I have gone to Preferences/import and unchecked the box TWICE, yet when I start importing it invariably ends the clip at 19:54:06 then stops importing. If I click IMPORT again, it brings in another 19:54:06.
What do i have to do so it will import without stopping?

Hi minutemantechs - welcome to the forum!
This is not a limitation imposed by iMovie. Check your external drive's format - it must be Mac OS Extended. Yours is probably formatted for PCs. Note that re-formatting will clear everything stored on the drive. re-format via Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.

  • During Import, scene breaks are not starting new clip.

Imovie HD: When importing from my camcorder (Mini DV) scene breaks are not starting new clips. The video is going into one clip which I then have to manually split each scene into individual clips before editing.
My preferences are set to: Import/Start a new clip at each scene break=ON..
The last time I used Imovie4, this same thing occurred. Prior to that, in Imovie4, it worked as advertised.
Could it be my camera settings?? Panasonic PV-DV910

    Problem solved.
I normally do not have the date and time displayed in the camera's viewfinder. So, I didn't realize that the date/time had been reset to 1998 and not active. After setting to date/time to the present, NEW recording - when imported - was being split into individual clips at the scene breaks.
However the previously recorded video would not.
My punishment for my lapse is to manually do the "split". But I am a much wiser videographer.

  • Start New clip a scene break

I am importing HD footage into IMovie HD I have selected start new clip at scene break but all it does is import as one huge file and does not start a new clip at each scene break. I know the importing has to be done at 1/4 speed because of my older mac G4. Is this the reason it does not start a new clip at scene break? Is there another setting besides in preferences I need to adjust?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
And there is no sceen-detection program in the Mac environment at all to my knowledge.
Rumour says that there is such a program on the PC-platform. But how this is done
and how many clips that a panoramic (panning) recording would split up into is
    a bit of my curiosity.
    No Not in iMovie
    Not in FinalCut Express
Not in FinalCut Pro 6 (Studio 2 bundle)

  • Create a new clip for a new scene doesn't work on video import

For the last few months I cannot get i movie4 to import video with a new clip for each sequence. It will import the video as one only large clip although the button "create a new clip for a new scene" has been selected in the imovie preferences.
What can I do to solve this problem ?

  • New Clips at Every Scene Break

whenever i upload video from my DV video camera, the whole video comes out in one clip. i set the preference to make it make new clips at each scene break but it still doesnt work. i was wondering if maybe i need to update imovie by getting ilife or something.
    thank you

So it would seem no one has a real solid answer as to why this happens? Not trying to be argumentative, but I meet all of your aforementioned 'requirements' for scene clipping and it still doesn't work for me. BACKGROUND: The first experience(s) I had with iMHD6 was with my friend's Sony camcorder (it's gone now so model no. unknown), and I made movies/DVD's, from their DV camera, for them. Yada yada...my point being is that I clicked 'Import' in iMovie and the scenes were all automatically clipped on their Sony. Fast-forward a few months later (no pun intended) and they replaced their Sony with a Canon ZR830 (DV tape-based camcorder). Now, both the Sony & Canon cameras are mid-range and nothing fancy. The Canon camera (the date/time and time zone were all set correctly) imports all 56 minutes of the tape in one chunk; no scene splitting! This stinks for me cuz I have to go through and manually cut the segments up. So my Q is...is there anything else I can check in the camera to see if this can be remedied? Can you guys confirm that scene-splitting is simply just time/date based i.e. there is a gap greater than 30 seconds between two frames? Because that doesn't seem to be the case here when the Canon camera's time/date are set properly. Is it possible that this camera is NOT time-stamping the video? I'm thinking this might be my problem. Thoughts?
PS. I hope this makes sense...I've been working all day and my brain is dead, blah...trying to drink coffee to wake up.

  • How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when opening the program to digitize new clips for new project. i have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what to disable.

How can I stop iMovie from making thumbnails of clips from past projects when first opening the program to digitize new clips for a new project. It takes forever for it and is very annoying. I have looked in the preferences and couldn't figure out what would disable this problem.

You do not need to move your cursor much when pressing the mouse button to cause the tab to tear-off/tear-away into a new tab. No "sensitivity" setting that I am aware of. The tab in the new window can be dragged back to the original window.
To disable the feature, install this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/

  • How do I eliminate the delay in reducing background noise with each new clip?

My microphones pick up a fair amount of background nosie.  At 60% reduction with iMovie's built in editor it sounds perfect.  The only problem is that it takes about .5 seconds to go from zero reduction to 60%.  If this were only at the start of the new movie, that would be fine.  But this occurs at every new clip.  I'm editing together a long series of short, ten second clips...so there is a distracting hissing of background noise once every ten seconds.  Any help on this would be great.

  • IMovie creates a new clip every 3 seconds--why?

I'm using an older DV tape camcorder. It is connected to an external Firewire drive. Importing video into iMovie HD presents no difficulties. I thought I'd give iMovie 9 a try, just to get to know the program. But while importing, the video on screen plays for a few seconds, pauses for less than a second, then plays for a few seconds, then pauses for less than a second...you get the picture. In the clip viewer each three second segment is its own clip. When played, all the clips look like the single long shot they originally were--there's no jerkiness to the video. But at this rate I'll have 100 clips for a five minute movie. Not convenient. (I can, by the way, hear the hard drive stopping and then starting again each time the video pauses. But this does not occur with iMovie HD, so I'm guessing the problem isn't the hard drive.)
Also, while importing I hear no sound. Again, in HD there is sound.
    Any thoughts?
    Jim

OK--discovered the slider which shows the number of frames in the Event Browser, so that takes care of my first question.
Still--anyone know how to hear the audio while video is being imported?

  • IMovie '11 won't import the new clips from iPhoto

I uploaded some footage from my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A to my iMac. All of the new clips were copied into iPhoto. (I never deleted anything from my camcorder so they're all there as well, for now.)
The problem: I opened up iMovie '11 and the new uploaded clips that went to iPhoto did not get imported into iMovie '11. I see the clips and have played one of them. They're there in iPhoto.
How can I get those newly uploaded clips to iMovie '11?
I just now noticed that when I click the camera icon in iMovie '11, the folder that I made and that has those new clips in iPhoto is indeed there...... but when I click to see what's inside the folder, there is nothing. Yet I know that the clips are inside that folder when I look in iPhoto.
Can someone lead me out of this?
This seems like a good time for me to go downstairs for a snack.

The problem is solved. At someone's request, I looked yet again at the folder titled "iPhoto Videos" in the Event Library (See screen shot.) When I noticed that the dates on that folder included today's date, this time I looked more carefully and scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page, where happily, I found the videos that I had uploaded from my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A earlier today. I thought that all of the videos would go underneath the iPhoto folder and end up looking like the 2011 folders (See screen shot again.)
If all of those folders and videos under/in the 2011 folder are there, I am wondering why such folders from today's upload did not get added there somehow in some form. Why are they all still in the iPhoto videos folder?
Could iMovie '11 be in error? Because as it is now, although I am happy that iMOvie '11 did indeed get my videos from iPhoto, it bothers me that it did not also format those folders below the way the other folders are. The inconsistency of actions bothers me. Now I cannot be sure that looking in one spot will show all of my videos.

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)
(PS Everybody please make noise on this one so apple comes up with a solution.)

  • When capturing footage is there a way to automatically create new clips...

When capturing footage in Final Cut Pro is there a way to automatically create new clips like it does in iMovie. I have to capture over 9 hours of footage and I dont want to spend the time logging each clip. I also dont want to just capture the whole tape then go back and log each clip. I really like how iMovie automatically creates a new clip each time the rec/pause button was pushed. is there anyway I can get Final Cut to do this??????

You can capture the complete clip and then apply Mark > DV Start/Stop Detect over the captured clip. You could get the best of two worlds so: smooth capture and clips creation.

  • Convert iMovie to QT clip that PC's and Mac's can view

I am not too familiar with QT and its capabilities and have a question.
From one clip of an iMovie of my boys football game I created a 15 sec. QT movie and emailed it to my son. He could open it on his PC but when he sent to his friends who also have PC's neither could open it.
I looked on my QT Pro choices under '>file > export' to convert to some other more PC friendly file but ran into a wall. It lists a number of options but which one do I choose?
All my software is the latest version.
    Harold

Thanks to all who have responded,
I had planned to create short movie clips for emailing but wanted something quick and easy to do so.
It would be great if I could from iMovie select a clip and share to QT then email the results but it seems that each time I will have to ‘work’ on the clip to prepare it for sharing. I don’t want to go to that much trouble each time so I doubt I will use this means.
I don’t understand why it is not easy to do so. Each time I try to open a QT clip in WMP it says it can’t use the file. I had hoped it would convert the movie to MPV or better if QT would convert to something other than files most PC’s won’t open. There are now four PC users that can’t open the file and one that can. 1 out of 5 is not too impressive.
By the way, I don’t know what Sorenson is.
I create numerous iMovies but never use QT even though I keep buying Pro each system upgrade just in case.
Is there a quicker solution to sharing by email?
    Harold
