Imovie 6.0.3 to imovie 7.1?

Hi all,
I'm having a bit of trouble getting imovie version 7.1, my current imovie is called Imovie HD version 6.0.3. And for some reason when i try and upgrade it to 7.1, the installation program says;
'You cannot install Imovie update 7.1 on this volume, an eligible imovie application was not found in the location /applications'
my imovie app is in my applications folder, so i don't see why it shouldn't work, anyone got any suggestions?

Imovie 7 is part of ilife 08 which you will need to purchase. You will need imovie 7 before you can upgrade to 7.1

I have just upgraded from a tape DV to a HDD HD camcorder.
This has meant leaving behind my cherished i-Movie HD programme and using i-Movie11 (also moved to lion). I just want to do simple cuts and pastes on HD content(720p), add a start and end title, and then add some chapter markers - exportto i-DVD. Nothing more complex, no sound imports, green screen, camera shake,fades etc... I have "heard it said" that you can make i-Movie 11 looklike the old i-Movie HD set-up? That is a simple linear edit bar with a largeview screen.
My question is how do you do this? I have tried to use i-Movie 11 and it isso confusing!
If not is there a programme out there will do similar to i-Movie HD? (Lookedat FCX, FC Express, Premier, etc and they are all way to complex for my simpleneeds.)
At the moment the best I have found is the old Quicktime 7 pro, which cutsstuff out but not much of the rest.

Yes, you can activate a preference that shows the timeline as a single horizontal row, rather than the normal presentation which shows the timeline scrolling down the page (much like a word processing document). Click on the button containing 3 white squares - it's directly to the left of the comment and chapter marker buttons on the far right of the project window. See this pic:
You can adjust the size of the Viewer - go to the menu item Window>Viewer and select from Small, Medium and Large. You can also adjust the size of the Viewer by dragging down on an empty space on the centre tool bar.

iMovie on your Mac has nothing to do with iCloud storage. Download and use Find Any File to search for your iMovie project. FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't, like invisible folders, packages and system folders. If there a file with your file name on it anywhere on the hard drive FAF will find it.
Do you have Time Machine enabled backing up to an external HD? This situation is exactly what TM is good at. It makes hourly backups so you can go back to find and restore the missing file. All HDs crash at some time or another and having a good backup strategy is the only protection against that.

Yes, you can import to an external drive by choosing it from the Import Screen.
Once an Event or Project is in iMovie, it is best to move it to the external using iMovie, so the Project does not lose links to the Event.

No you can not.
You can connect USB 3 components to you MB if you wish to use them but will only run at USB 2 specs.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

iMovie 2.0.1 ran in Mac OS 9, not Mac OS X. If I recall, it is necessary to boot your Mac into Mac OS 9 to run it. It won't run in Mac OS 9 Classic running inside Mac OS X. Your Mac cannot boot into Mac OS 9, so you probably can't run iMovie 2.0.1.
You probably wouldn't want to anyway, for versions of iMovie that ran in Mac OS 9 used the OS 9 file name structure, which causes problems for projects converted to Mac OS X.
The simplest solution is to simply import the project.mov file that's inside the iMovie 2 project folder to a new iMovie HD project. (Don't import the iMovie 2 project file, import its .mov file.) Because of the name problem, it's possible this won't work either, but it probably will.
That will deliver the entire iMovie 2 project as a single clip to the iMovie HD project. The clips you had in iMovie 2 won't be editable, but everything will be there and play in the proper order.

Can I have 2 version of iMovie installed at the same time? I want to view and maybe use the new version (in iLive08), but everything I have heard about it is not good. I'd like the option to keep the version 6.0.3.

I don't have iLife 08 but AFAIK unlike earlier versions it doesn't overwrite iMovie 1-6.
And besides, if you copied & renamed earlier versions before installing iMovie 1-6, the old version co-existed very nicely with the new version. For example: you want to keep iMovie 4 before installing iMovie 5-6: duplicate iMovie, rename the duplicate as iMovie 4.0.1, install iMovie 5-6 -> voila: you have iMovie 4.0.1 and iMovie HD (5-6).
Some people have almost all iMovie versions in their Applications folder for testing purposes

It works but avoid using the iSight for recording by "time lapse" when you select the camera in iMovie HD's main menu.
It will not be responding to other applications that make use of the iSight afterwards, I did a reinstall of the OS and it worked again.
I've been there. iMac, iMovie 08 installed before adding iMovie HD.

IMovie 6 to show in iMovie 5

I am running a MacBook using 10.4.8 and have created a small movie in iMovie 6. I want to share this iMovie with someone who wants to show the editing of clips and such on an eMac running 10.4.6 with iMovie 5. There is no way to get iMovie 6 on that computer at this time. Is there anyway to take the imovie 6 file and get it to show and work in iMovie 5?
Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, Tom.
As far as I know, the project file format of iMovie 6 is identical to iMovie 5, so it's often possible to edit the same project in both versions. Problems can occur so it's not recommended, but it may work fine.
Two possible problems:
1) iMovie 5 won't understand all the features you may have created unique to iMovie 6. 5 won't understand 6's themes, for example.
But if the project is relatively simple, there may be no problems with that. The only way to know is to try. Don't plan on moving the project back to iMovie 6, however, and editing it there. Share a copy.
2) You might encounter user permissions problems after moving the project from your Mac to his. It may be a good idea to print a copy of these instructions, which explain how to change the permissions inside the project.

I'm dealing with this same issue. At one point, it did recognize the Update function but then said it could not import the cache.mov and plist files which apparently means that imovie 10 can't see any of these past events. I can't figure it out.

Its possible to minimize the programme, but then I click on the programme in the bar, it opens up in the third screen… and I only got 2….

iMovie 06 will look better.
iMovie 11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If you want to have both iMovie 06 and iLife 11 (and most do) just install iMovie 06 first, then iLife 11. You are now UN-STOPPABLE!
Install iMovie 6 first, and iMovie 11 second, iMovie 11 knows about iMovie 6 and will move it to a folder called "iMovie - Previous Versions".
Apple leaves iMovie 06 on your system, because they want you to have it. iMovie 06 works great with iDVD 09 and iDVD 11.

Thanks. I don't know why it wouldn't just go back there when I tried putting it back? I didn't change anything, so I assumed the new "default" was over on the left. Glad it was a simple solution after all.

The latest version (iMovie 10) doesn't have iMovie projects and iMovie events folders - these were for iMovie 9 and earlier. In iMovie 10 Projects are in Events and Events are in Libraries. When you quit iMovie the current status of your projects and events are automatically saved in the library so there is nothing to do. The default location for libraries is in ~ / Movies folder but you can put them anywhere, such as on an external drive . If you want to backup the library you can make a copy of it on a separate disk or memory stick using the Finder.

Import iMovie '08 project (movie) into iMovie '06 (to make chapter markers)

I would like to make custom chapter markers in my iMovie '08 movie so that a scene selection menu is automatically created when I import the movie into iDVD. I understand that I can create such chapter markers in iMovie '06, which I have downloaded.
I am unable to import the iMovie '08 movie (project), into iMovie '06, however.
It looks like I can import iMovie '08 Events into iMovie '06, and make a new movie out of them. However, I don't really want to re-create the whole movie all over again, as it was a lot of work.
Is there some way I can get my iMovie '08 project imported into iMovie '06? Or do I have to make these custom chapter markers in GarageBand, as suggested elsewhere?
I have looked at this discussion - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8592766&#8592766 - and other ones, but can't seem to find an answer to this. It looks like others have tried to do this, but it doesn't say exactly how.

I ended importing my movie from iMovie into Garageband, and, with a bit of a learning curve (figuring out how to get the time instead of the beats to show in the LCD, for example), making my chapter markers and titles there. I then sent the movie to iDVD of course, and it seems to work just fine.
So I didn't end up copying the buttons, as you suggested, but thanks very much for that suggestion. Once I figured out the Garageband controls, it was easier than I thought it would be. I guess I should have tried Garageband first; it seemed like such an unlikely solution, what with being a music composition program and all.
