IMovie 6 Chapter Export for Apple TV

Ok, this is driving me crazy. All I want to do is export my iMovie 6 edit in a reasonably high quality export (for archive and Apple TV) WITH my chapter points preserved. I've already made a DVD so I just want the video file, but with basic interactivity, i.e. 11 chapter points over a hour of edited footage. Is there a workaround for this, for example exporting to FCP and then Compressor. TIA, chris

If the Compressor application is a resonably current version, simply drop the chaptered iMovie HD v6 timeline (i.e., the "Shared > iDVD" file) to Compressor, select the appropriate device preset, and Compressor will do the rest.

  • Chapter Markers for Apple TV movies

After a search, I saw a brief discussion about using Handbrake to set chapter markers for Apple TV.
But is there a way to set chapters with iLife apps or QT Pro? With my home movies, the Apple TV remote button ">>" advances to each scene I captured with the Canon camcorder. At least it's not random, but dvd-style chapters would be nicer.
I realize QT removes chapters from iMovie projects, but I'm wondering if anyone has a workaround.

To create a chapter list in QT Pro:
    1. In a text editor or word processor, type your list of chapters and save the document as plain text.
    2. Make each item very short (preferably one word but no more than two or three words) and separate each item with a carriage return.
    3. In QuickTime Player, choose File > Open File, select the text file, and click Open.
    4. Choose File > Export. In the Export pop-up menu, choose "Text to Text." In the Use pop-up menu, choose "Text with Descriptors."
    5. Click Options. In the Text Export Settings dialog, select "Show Text, Descriptors, and Time"; select "Show time relative to start of Movie"; and set fractions of seconds to 1/30 (the default is 1/1000).
    6. Click OK, then click Save to create a text file with descriptors.
    7. Open the exported list in your text editor or word processor, and open the target movie in QuickTime Player.
    8. Choose Window > Show Movie Info.
    9. In QuickTime Player, drag the playhead on the timeline to find the first point in the movie where you want to begin a new chapter.
    10. Use the Right and Left Arrow keys to step forward or backward a frame at a time as needed. Note the current time in the Properties window.
    11. In the text file, find the first chapter title and change the timestamp just before that chapter title to the time you noted in the Properties window.
    12. The timestamp might now read, for example, [00:01:30.15], meaning that selecting the first chapter title will jump the viewer 1 minute, 30 seconds, and 15 frames into the movie.
    13. Repeat steps 9 through 11 until you've identified all the places in the movie that correspond to the chapter divisions and you've entered the proper timestamps in the text file.
    14. Change the last timestamp (the one after the last chapter title in the text file) to match the duration of the movie.
    15. Save the text file and import it into QuickTime Player.
    16. QuickTime creates a new movie with just a text track.
    17. Choose Edit > Select All, choose Edit > Copy, and close the movie.
    18. Click in the main movie, choose Edit > Select All, then choose Edit > "Add to Movie."
    19. QuickTime adds the text track to the movie.
    20. Choose Window > Show Movie Properties.
    21. In the Properties window, select the video or audio track you want to associate with the chapter track, and click Other Settings.
    22. Choose the main video or audio track from the Chapters pop-up menu.
    23. If you have a movie with alternate subtitle or sound tracks, you can create multiple chapter lists in different languages and set the appropriate subtitle or sound track as the owner of each chapter list. The chapter list will change to match the selected language.
    24. Select the text track, then select "Preload this track" (to make the chapter track load first).
    25. Deselect the new text track so that it doesn't display on top of the video.
    26. The new track will still function as a chapter track.
    27. Save the movie as a self-contained movie.
    28. You can now choose a chapter title from the pop-up menu to the right of the timeline.

  • FCE and Export for Apple TV

I want to be able to use FCE to edit my HD footage from my Sony HD7 camcorder then display results through Apple TV. I know I will lose resolution, but am having one particular problem. After importing clips to FCE I exported to Quicktime movie, then opened the file in Quicktime and exported to Apple TV. The resulting video seems "jerky" at least to my eyes. Almost like every other frame was cut out. Do I need to export from FCE at a different resolution or frame rate to get the export to Apple TV looking better?
    Thanks all for the help.

Thanks Tom. Could be just my eyes seeing the difference in the results, but here are the details.
    Original File from Sony HDR-HC7
    Video Tracks:
    Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080, 29.97 fps, 98.77 Mbps
    Audio Tracks:
16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
Export direct as QuickTime movie and conversion to Apple TV seems to show some jagged sharp motion to my eyes, so I tried the steps below and got a more fluid result.
The exported from FCE to 1280 x 720 with these settings:
    Compression: H.264
    Quality: High
    Key Frame Rate: 24
    Frame Rendering: Yes
    Encoding Mode” multi-pass
    Dimensions: 1280 x 720
Results of export from Final Cut
    H.264, 1280 x 720, 29.97 fps, 17.48 Mbps
16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
Then converting that to Apple TV file (opened in QuickTime and used export for Apple TV):
    Video Tracks:
    H.264, 960 x 540, 29.97 fps, 3.81 Mbps
Could be that Export to QuickTime Movie makes an Apple Intermediate Codec file and the export using QT conversion made an H264 codec. Perhaps there is a difference in the way the QT function "export to Apple TV" handles those two codecs???

  • Chapter Markers for Apple TV Exports

    Hi
Can't seem to export chapter markers for my Apple TV video exports. They are green on the timeline, but don't show up on the final Apple TV m4v.
Does this just not work, or am I doing something stupid?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Mark

    Tom
So if you want any compression at all, deviate from Quicktime movie for any reason, you lose all your chapter marker ability. Seems pretty lame to me. Is that true for FCP, or just FCE?
Guess I will just have to use the fast forward on my remote.
BTW, got your book and it was very helpful.
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Export for Apple TV

I've edited footage in FCE4 in separate projects from both AVCHD (Sony HDR-CX7) and HDV (Sony HVR-Z1U). In both cases footage is in a 16x9 format. When I export and set it for Apple Tv I get a squeezed picture that plays fine on Apple TV in both cases. I've tried exporting at various settings that result in a 16x9 movie but they won't sync with Apple TV. Help would be appreciated. (I've had great results with iMovie and recently moved up to FCE4)

Try exporting as a quicktime movie then convert to Apple TV with Quicktime.
BTW you should setup your forum profile to show your hardware and software versions.

  • Export for Apple TV with Date?

I have over 70 home movies dating back to 1952 in the latest version of Final Cut Studio that I want to export to Apple TV and I need the title and date (year) to be displayed. I cannot get the date to show up in Apple TV reliably.
I export from Final Cut Studio using Share and then Send to Compressor where I use a custom Apple TV setting which just exports in SD without any audio. The resulting m4v file is imported into iTunes and viewable with Apple TV. On Apple TV the title shows up for each movie but no date (release date?) is listed. Since these movies date back to 1952 I want to have the date displayed (I don't want to include it in the title text).
I have set the year in iTunes, can't find out how to set the date in Compressor, set the date with MetaX, Lostify, etc., but the date never shows up on Apple TV.
I have searched these forums and the internet but have not found a solution that works. Can anybody offer any suggestion on how to reliably set the date?

Hey Jeff, I realized that you've marked this thread Answered but, in case it matters, the issue with retagging files already imported into iTunes is a known issue (For whatever reason, the iTunes Library Database file doesn't update the metadata when a file is retagged externally.)
What many of us (iTunes nerds) do is delete the file from our iTunes library, retag externally, then Add to Library in iTunes.
That's the most foolproof way, though sometimes after retagging externally (and not having removed beforehand) a simple Get Info in iTunes does the trick. But that fails a lot for me personally.

  • Share/export for Apple TV

Is my only option to pick the Share to iTunes with Large (960x540)? I have HD (1080) projects I'd like to have available thru ATV.
Quicktime, using 'Movie to Apple TV' has only Default settings - non-changeable.
My TV is 720p via HDMI. Shouldn't I be able to get some larger output?
    Thanks,
    Rick

Is my only option to pick the Share to iTunes with Large (960x540)? I have HD (1080) projects I'd like to have available thru ATV.
No but there are specific file playback limitations. Playback of files having frame rates of 29.97/30 fps is limited to 960x540 resolution while files having 23.976/24/25 fps are limited to 1280x720.
Quicktime, using 'Movie to Apple TV' has only Default settings - non-changeable.
You can, in fact, create files at any dimension you wish using the "Export Using QuickTime" H.264 or MPEG-4 export options but whether or not they will play in the TV media player is something else.
My TV is 720p via HDMI. Shouldn't I be able to get some larger output?
TV itself will output 1080i and 1080p scaling of your playing files if your TV will accept it.

  • FCP export for ATV with chapters

Hi, I have about an hour of PAL DV edited content in FCP 6, with about 10 chapter points. I've created my DVD and now I want to keep a copy for Apple TV with chapter points included. Can anyone advise which way to do this, as I've tried some options using QT export/convert and Compressor etc. but all unsatisfactory. When I get a good quality ATV export it doesn't have the chapters included. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
    Chris

Yes, I can see them ok and have managed to export in various formats with them intact. My problem is more to do with knowing the right settings/codec to export for Apple TV but with the chapters in there still. I've got good looking ATV compliant exports, and I've got various formats with the chapters in, but not both. It would seem like a really basic thing to want to do, but seems really elusive (unless I'm being dumb!). I actually started out in iMovie as it's a family video and pretty basic edits etc. but iMovie can't do this either
    Thanks, chris

  • Export setup for apple tv 3 1080p

hi, I have last version of aperture, I create my slideshow and I want export file in Itunes and watch movie with my apple tv 3, and I cant find correct setup, there is only for apple tv 720p, I try hd 1080 setup but file create is very large 35Gb, I try custum setup but is impossible found a compatible setup for apple tv!!!
I Imovie is possible and in aperture not?
I have only 2 solution, firsth, export file in 720p, second export file in hd1080, import file in imovie and with imovie create a file in 1080p for my apple tv3.
it is correct or there are another solutions?
    thanks
    mauro

The described problem is typical of a cable issue, however if you are sure you have looked into this properly, then it could well be a hardware problem.

  • Optimal HD export settings for Apple TV

I've captured some video from my Canon HV20 and want to view it in the highest quality I can via my Apple TV. If I read the tech specs on the Apple TV it says "H.264 up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats"
But if I export as 1280x720 with AAC-LC (default, at up to 128kps), iTunes/Apple TV isn't happy with the result (ie. it won't transfer it to the Apple TV) saying it can't be played. If I say "Convert Selection for Apple TV" in iTunes I get a new 960x540 MPEG-4 video file which plays fine, but isn't as sharp on my HDTV as I would like.
So what's the magic to render a video that works on the Apple TV from FCEHD at the highest quality?
    Thanks....

    JFraser wrote:
Then what's the highest bitrate that's actually supported and how much bandwidth will the Apple TV hog from the network at that level?
    as per the advertised specs.
    Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • Help exporting 16:9 optimized for apple tv

I am trying to export an SD anamorphic sequence optimized for apple tv. I have been going to File/ export/ use quicktime conversion/ apple tv, preset. But it exports it as 4:3 and the configure options are all grayed out. What is the best way to get my anamorphic footage to play anamorphically optimized for apple tv? I figured out that if I open the exported m4v in quicktime then go to window/show movie properties and then go to visual settings and change the aspect ratio and then re export in quicktime to the ipod preset it will stay in the 16:9 aspect ratio. Why is this? and what can i do to streamline the process?

Ok, I've been doing alot of digging and finally found a setup that's working great for me by following the instructions here:
The workflow described is for ripping DVD's, the OP is using home video (DV)
Second, is simply a container that specifies how the program handles that file correct?
    Yes
You could theoretically simply rename an mp4 to m4v then, correct?
Maybe: Apple felt that .mp4 did not adequately describe the content of the container and introduced .m4a to denote an .mp4 container that contained only audio (AAC), .m4v follows on from that concept in that it is a .mp4 container that contains video as well (AVC)
I'm not sure but I think .m4v might be a .mp4 container that contains AVC video only (just to clarify- it can still contain audio, chapters etc, just not other video codecs). As such I can foresee possible problems if a .mp4 file is renamed .m4v, but for sure a .m4v' should be able to be renamed .mp4

  • Export iMovie to YouTube for iPad

does anyone know how to export imovie to youtube for ipad?  I have tried everything that I found on the web and nothing seems to work.  Thanks!

Since Maverick/iMovie '10 I prefer to do in in two steps because the one-step method (direct upload to YouTube) is not working properly. Exporting the movie (option share as a file) in the highest quality and, second step, upload your movie in YouTube works fine to me.

  • Exporting QT with Chapter markers for iDVD

When I export a QT with Chapter markers for iDVD I get one movie file then a number of "AV" files - what are these and what do I do with them?
    workflow as follows:
1.Place chapter markers in timeline using mm the Add Chapter Markers
    2. set in/out points in timeline
    3. export quicktime movie
    4. select include Chapter Markers and include audio/video
    5. do NOT select recompress all frames
    6. DO select make self contained movie.
    7. Open exported movie file in Quicktime and chapter markers are present
    8. import ONLY the movie file to iDVD (NOT the AV files?) and answer yes to read all chapter markers
    9. burn seems to work fine but when I playback on DVD player there is digital stuttering in the picture
Any ideas on how to remedy the problem?
    thanks in advance
    patrick

The project is only 75 minutes. Do think it is the codec that iDVD is using that is causing the stutter. I assumed that it always encodes using MPG2.
Any idea what the AV files are?
When I export as an uncompressed DV stream the file is 15 GB.
When I export as uncompressed QT I get one file (movie) at 2.5 GB then
5 more "AV" files that are each 2.5 as well. So when I import the movie file without the AV files am I missing something?
Should I look into DVD Studio Pro? I have version 1.5 but I am fairly unfamiliar with it.

  • Imovie export for fullscreen use on ipad

I'm trying to produce an imovie '09 movie for use exclusively on an IPAD using full screen mode (as opposed to letterbox). All the backgrounds in imovie are designed for widescreen and ken burns effects cannot be used without imovie forcing the cropping of the photo. (i.e., I can't use ken burns for anything other than widescreen. In addition, even though cropped photo's appear ok in the imovie preview and when displayed on the mac, they are cropped even further on the IPAD.
Is there a thread or some other resource that someone can refer to me so that I can get cropping to work for the IPAD display.
