IMovie 6 HD Plugin Incompatibility

I have been using iMovie HD 6.0.3 (267.2) for a while and have found it a very untrustworthy and unreliable application. Apart from the regular crashes, one day my iMovie refused to open so I reinstalled it from iLife 05 and updated it from the apple site. Now when I open iMovie I get the following pop-up message -
The plugin “Twirl.bundle” cannot be loaded, because it isn't designed to run on this computer. If you don't need this plugin, remove it from your plugins folder (in Library > iMovie)
Now I know I used Twirl on previous projects with no problems and yet when I got to the plugins folder, as directed, I find it completely empty.

You cannot update iMovie 5 (part of iLife 5) you have to buy iLife 6.
I have been using iMovie 6 for two years and have never had a serious problem with it.
Apple's tutorials for iMovie HD 6 are here:

is for iMHD5 ...
If you have a particular problem with iMovie 6 post back and we can see if we can get it sorted for you.

  • IMovie 6 plugins

Hmm im having trouble finding plugins for iMovie HD 6, and especially for intel. I have looked around and there are a myriad of plugins for different, older versions. Im looking specifically for a blue screen plugin and/or one that will be good for a video montage. If anyone could be of some help, I'd really appreciate it!

Am I to understand that none of the iMovie plugins will work on my Intel iMac? Here are the messages when opening a movie in iMovie '06:
Incompatible Plugin – The plugin "Toast Video CD Export.bundle" cannot be loaded because it isn't designed to run on this computer. If you don't need this plugin, remove it from our plugin folder (in Library>iMovie)

Is any help coming for this soon? Guess that is why I'm upgrading my FCE to native binary. Running in Rosetta is not a viable option to me.

  • Problems with iMovie DH plugins

When I start iMovie I receive 10 messages that say " there is a problem with" ten different plugins. They seem to work in the program, but I have to click "OK" tem times every time I state iMovie.

    Hi
This problem occured for me to.
    Origin - one faulty plug-in
Result - iMovie complained over all of them.
I did: Move out the plug-ins to desktop.
Move them back (in blocks to find out which one was faulty) but if You have
lot's of time test one at a time.

  • Soundbooth CS5 crashes on start, possible plugin incompatibility?

When I start Soundbooth CS 5, in Mac OS X 10.6.4, it starts to boot and when it gets to loading Looks3_AE.plugin (which is the Magic Bullet Looks plugin for After Effects) I get the following error:
    Soundbooth has encountered an error.
    [/Roadrunner/main/MediaCore/MediaLayer/VideoFilterHost/Make/Mac/../../Src/AEPluginVideoFil terModule.cpp-107]
I have already tried starting Soundbooth while holding the shift key in order to reset the preferences.  Is there a way to get Soundbooth to ignore the After Effects plugins?

  • Effect Plugin Incompatibility

    Hi Guys-
I've been playing around with plugins around the web and some, specifically called "FE (Glow, Jaws, Noise, etc.)" I'm thinking it might be from FCE, but I'm not sure exactly where they came from. In the finder inside all those folders, it's "Kind" is... TextScrambler.bundledocument. It's "version" is 4.0.1 Final Effects Complete. Now onto the problem...
When I apply the effect to a clip in FCP, all the settings are availible under the filters tab, but in the canvas a message appears (like "unrendered"). AE Effects Error: Rendering error using "(name of filter)". Verify filter parameters. That's all. Any suggestions? Thanks!
    -Jack

I'll have a rough stab in the dark and say that they'll be busted in fcp 5.1x - a guess only though ...
I'm still lamenting the fact that any of TrapCode's fine plug-ins no longer work and it doesn't appear that they'll rewrite them for fcp 5.1 at this stage.
I dunno maybe FinalEffects will offer a version that will work for you - a question of waiting for support that may be forthcoming - or not.
oh well - over to AE for me with some of these plugins.

  • IMovie 6 cant export to CD File Not Found

For a year, i've been making videos, and using either Share or Export to make CD-ROM quality videos MOV files. For no reason suddenly, I get an error "The movie could not be sent to Quicktime because a file couldn't be found." Then the error gives instructions on fixing, but they dont' work. I read other posts on fixing iMovie such as deleting prefs, and I have no plug-ins. So I want to reinstall or fix iMovie but it's really stuck. I can't get past the error. Rebooting, reinstallling Quicktime didn't help. It won't let me reinstall iMovie saying i already have a newer version - yeah, one that doesn't work.
Without being able to save movies to MOV, I am so wasting my time here.
    Can someone help?
The error text "Please make sure that your project disk has write permission, and that you have enough disk space. This error can also be caused by some third-party iMovie HD plugins. If you have added plugins:
    1) Quit iMovie HD.
    2) Find your installed plugins. They're usually in a folder called “iMovie” in your “Library” folder.
    3) Rename the plugins folder “iMovie0”.
    4) Launch iMovie HD and try sharing again.
When you're done sharing, you may change the folder name back to “iMovie” so the plugins are available again.
Visit http://support.apple.com/ for more information on this issue."

OK, it will export to my MacMini drive (I was working on an external drive). So, never mind, I hope my experience helps others. I can easily move the finished MOV file to external.
Sheesh, I guess I'd better fix permissions or something.

  • I just upgraded to Firefox 4.0 and I noticed a discrepency upgrading my plugins.

After upgrading to Firefox 4.0, the website http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ shows a different upgrade status than the Tools -> Addons (ctrl-shift-A) -> Plugins then "Check for Updates" option. The mozilla website will list several updates (some out of date/"Update" link, some vulnerable/"Update NOW" link, some up-to-date, and some Unknown Plugin/"Research" link), while the Plugins tab will state "No Updates" when you try to check for updates.

  • Audio/effects/transitions/titles from older versions of iMovie

I've discovered that iMovie 3 removed some content that was present in iMovie 2; specifically, the Water Ripple effect, and all the old stock audio clips. Granted, the new audio Skywalker Sound audio clips in iMovie 3 were better, but it'd still be nice to have access to the old ones too. So I have two questions:
Does anyone know if anything else was removed going from iMovie 3->4, 4->5, or 5->6?
Is there a way to get those old audio/effects back into later versions of iMovie? (Maybe a way to upgrade that preserves the older content, sort of like how you can upgrade iDVD 3 to iDVD 4 in order to keep the older iDVD 1 & 2 themes.)
Also another question: once upon a time, available for free download from Apple's website were a bunch of additional iMovie audio clips, background sets, etc. Alas, Apple has proven just as averse to preserving its past as nearly any other corporation: those files have long since been removed. Is there an archive of these anywhere?

Well after a bit of research I discovered that the old effect files can be integrated into later versions of iMovie. Basically what you have to do is right-click iMovie 2 and choose Show Package Contents. For the Water Ripple effect, navigate to Contents->Plug-ins, and copy the file Ripple.bundle, and create a copy of it to ~/Library/iMovie/Plug-ins. For the old stock audio sound effects, go back to the iMovie 2 package contents, navigate to Contents->Resources->Sound Effects, and copy all the files enclosed to ~/Library/iMovie/Sound Effects.
Of course you could always copy these files to the package contents of the later iMovie.app, but this way is a bit less of a "hack". (Oddly though when I tried just that, Ripple.bundle would only work when placed in iMovie->Contents->Plugins, not to be confused with the separate Plug-ins folder that it was stored in within iMovie 2.)
Anyway, hope this info helps somebody out there!

  • Quicktime 7 pro export h.264 better than iMovie quicktime setting?

Hi, wondering if anybody knows if Quicktime 7 pro will export h.264 files (mp4) with better quality than going thru iMovie 11 and using the Quicktime plugin? The results are ok with iMovie but wondering if Quicktime 7 Pro would export better as a standalone unit? Looking to make super small files from chopped up dvd's that will play on all mobile devices..Been using baseline profile setting in iMovie Quicktime plugin so it plays on iPhone 3g as well..  Thanks everyone!

I am trying to create very small files from a DVD , just simple chopping the DVD up into sections...when I use Handbrake to rip the DVD to a small h.264 (mp4) file the quality is surprisingly good...if I rip a higher quality mp4 to use in iMovie the export to smaller h.264 files don't look nearly as good when trying to get files sizes equivalent to Handbrake...I have tried ripping the highest quality video from DVD to use in iMovie '11 but when trying to export using QuickTime plugin to get h.264 (mp4) files they don't look that good...basically if Handbrake had editing capabilities the chopped up files would look better from there...
You are experiencing a process of diminishing returns by continuously re-compressing the video from less efficient codecs to more efficient/same efficiency codecs at the same or lower data rates which tends to degrade quality with each re-compression. My recommendation would be to purchase the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) and use it with MPEG Streamclip for your work flow. (Note: If you are using Lion, the component installer won't work correctly and you will either have the use the Squared-5 beta utility to install the package or install the codec manually.)
A better work flow would be to load the DVD titles (VOB file data) to MPEG Streamclip and edit the content there in its native MPEG-2/AC3 or MPEG-2/PCM compression format. You can set in/out points the same as using QT 7 Pro and save the segments as separate files using an alpha-numeric filename convention denoting the order in which you later want to merge the segments. Once all segments are saved, just drop all of them simultaneously back to the MPEG Streamclip work window and they will be merged in the proper alpha-numeric order. You can then fix "timecode breaks" and export the final product to your targeted compression format. Since you only re-compress the project once, depending on the codec/settings you use, your final file should approach the quality achieved in HandBrake. I.e., this is the main benefit of editing in the original "native" codec used in the DVD content.

  • Any iMovie gurus -- stupid nubie question

I'll admit it, I'm a total iMovie newbie, My daughter has more experience with the app than I have. However, I've been asked by said daughter's lacrosse coach to tape the games for later analysis. Since lacrosse is a club sport (not an academic sport) we don't have access to the high school's video equipment, though I can use the press box at the field. With our personal camcorder, the field of view is slightly over half the field. Another parent has volunteered to let me use thier identical camera.
Is it possible with iMovie HD to combine two video feeds in a split frame (correct term???) to provide full field coverage. I realize that I'll have to crop both video feeds to prevent overlap in the middle.
Has anybody had any experience with this type of editing.
I kinda wish, they had asked me to setup a mail/dns/web server for the team. That I can handle.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
I think a better solution would be to shoot with a tripod and cover the whole field panning left to right (or if you prefer right to left)
Shooting with two cameras can only be a plus (both cams on tripods, one with a wide view and the other with a tighter view of the action,) Knowing when to cut between camera footage and when to show split screen or picture in picture is also a plus.
Here Dan provides tips for shooting with 2 or more cameras
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6013.shtml
Just to add to Split Screen methods using iMovie
Slick plugin vol. 4 Hollywood Editions by GeeThree.com has a split screen plugin that does a superb job. It cost $50 but you get 3 additional great plugins effects( picture in picture, vidmix, Matte-tastic,) Plus a Stand alone application "Slick Motion". IMHO this Slick Motion is a very good application for animating photos/still images. No flicker/shimmer/jagged edges you often get in "iMovies Ken Burns effect". The only drawbacks are limited features and you can only import one photo at a time but, the quality is very good. If I didn't already own Photo to Movie or Still Life I think I would use this app before iMovies Ken Burns.
Anyway back to Slick's "Split Screen" plugin easy to use, a real "no-brainer (no manual needed) with adjustment sliders to position either video sources to the right or left (if necessary). Here's the link, if you're interested.

    Good luck!

  • I just upgraded to Firefox 4.0 and use Remember the Milk via Google email; Firefox now freezes up whenever I try to open email.

This has been an occasional problem since using Windows 7, but once I upgraded to Firefox 4 it's completely shut me down.
I suspect this is because I'm also using Remember the Milk via my email. I can't figure out how to turn off the RTM or why this is freezing. So far, other Google products (documents, calendar) work fine, as do all the other sites I normally access.
In addition, I can't find anything via your new menus... they are not helpful.

  • MacBook Pro 5.3 does not print to Canon iR C5180

I'm writing on behalf of my coworker who has a MacBook Pro 5.3 with Snow Leapard (10.6.2) has not been able to print to our Canon iR C5180. Our IS team had Ikon/Canon come out and upgrade software on the printer and also, they have found the latest drivers (Canon iRC5180 UFR II (US)) and installed them on her MacBook but it doesn't still work. We are very frustrated!
A generic driver did print for a while, but now we can not get any generic drivers to work either. The Canon iR is used by a majority of PC/WIN folks in our network so us few apple users (only 3) are rare. My Dual 2 Ghz PowerPC, 10.5.8 works fine with an older driver -H1 PS Ver 1.0
    Any ideas??

    Louis123 wrote:
Yes, our iR C5180 does have the imagePASS-H1 connected. I also forwarded your message to our IT support person and they stated,
"The UFR2 driver is the only one that supports PINs. Any other driver won’t be able to print in color because of that."
This is not true. The H1 does support PINs (called Department ID management on the copier). With the H1 v1.0 driver, you use the Owner Information menu to enter the Department ID and Password set in the copier.
The other thing they need to be aware of is that the UFR2 driver will not work when the imagePASS is connected. The UFR2 driver is designed for the Canon board only. Once the imagePASS is fitted, the Canon board is taken out of the RIPping process.
To ensure the SL user gets the correct driver to match the system version being used on the imagePASS, they can connect to the H1 by typing in it's IP address into a web browser. From the H1 web page, they select the Downloads tab and here they will see the H1 PS driver for Mac OS X.
With this driver downloaded onto the SL Mac, there are now several things needed to get this driver installed and working correctly.
    *Driver Installation*
In order to run the EFI installer on Mac OS X 10.6, you need to have the Rosetta emulator installed. This is due to the EFI driver installer being written in PPC code. A default install of Mac OS X 10.6 will not add the Rosetta emulator, so when you attempt to install the driver a message will appear asking if you want to install it. Click the Install button.
On a Mac that has a connection to the Internet, Rosetta will be automatically downloaded and installed before the initial execution of the Fiery printer driver installer. If the Mac has no access to the Internet, the user will need to load their Snow Leopard DVD and manually run the Optional Installs package.
    *Printer Queue Creation*
With the printer driver installed, you can now create a network print queue. Click to Add and select IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket for the protocol. In the Print Using menu, select "Canon iR C5180-H1 PS Ver1.0".
    With the printer queue created, when you attempt to print using the driver an error message appears stating that the software was not installed correctly. The error message displayed is caused by a permissions issue with a EFI plugin, fierycupsfilter. The CUPS error log confirms the cause of the error;
Filter "/Library/Printers/Canon/PS3/Filters/fierycupsfilter" for printer "CanoniR_C5185_H1_PS_Ver10" not owned by root
EFI have released a patch that will change the permissions on the PS3 folder to stop this error from occurring. This patch is designed to work with the System 6 and later RIPs whose driver installer creates this PS3 folder. The patch can be downloaded from EFI.
    http://services.efi.com/support/drivers/download2.asp?oem=efi&sys=Applemac_osx106&ver=NA
    *Driver PDE Plugin Incompatibility*
Now that you have managed to install the driver and print without the error message appearing, another issue may appear when printing from 64bit applications, such as Safari and Preview.
When you select to print and change the print dialog menus, you will see a line through the Fiery option (known as stike-through). This is the result of using a 64bit application with a 32bit plugin. The solution is to set the 64bit application to open in 32bit mode via the Get Info function for the 64bit application.
Hope this helps you with getting your colleague printing from Snow Leopard. Of course, reply if needed.

  • "The movie could not be sent to QT, because a file couldn't be found"

When I try to export a 2 1/2 min. iMovie video I made today in pretty much any format, I get the following:
"The movie could not be sent to QuickTime, because a file couldn't be found.
Please make sure that your project disk has write permission, and that you ahve enough disk space. This error can also be caused by some third-party iMovie HD plugins" then tells me what to do if I have said plug-ins. I have no plugins for iMovie.
The flash drive I'm attempting to save to has almost 80mb of available space. Also, something /does/ get saved on my drive, but the (Windows) computer I try to transfer it to won't recognize it and my MacBook's QuickTime refuses to play it.
    What is going on?

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
iMovie - and other Mac programs - prefer (..or need!..) to have any discs, or other devices on which you're saving movie files, to be formatted as 'Mac OS Extended'.
That's different from the (generally) FAT32 format which Windows PCs use. And although Macs can read Windows-formatted discs - so your MacBook can read what's on your Windows-formatted flash disc - Windows machines generally cannot read Mac-formatted discs, so, er, you'd have a problem or two if you want to use any Mac-formatted device with a Windows machine!
Your flash drive - and anything else on which you've saved your 2.5 minute iMovie video - would need to be formatted as 'Mac OS Extended' if you want to use it for iMovie editing ..but you should be able to store a 'self-contained' QuickTime movie on it perfectly well in its PC-formatted state, and that movie should play in Windows when you plug it into a Windows machine if you have the latest Windows version of QuickTime on the Windows PC.
So maybe you exported your iMovie to QuickTime, onto the flash disc, but not as a self-contained movie. If it IS self-contained, then the complete movie would be there, and it's pretty much guaranteed to play. But if you didn't tick the 'self-contained' check-box, then all that gets saved is a very small file (called a "reference file") with a set of "pointers" to what's in the original iMovie project. In other words, you've saved only the details of how to play the movie, without actually saving the actual video file(s), which remain on your MacBook, instead of being on the flash disc.

  • Milky / Cloudy ghosted view & can't switch to story view

I do layout work on a magazine and export stories for the editor using a Dropbox Incopy workflow. I use Indesign CS6 and the editor uses Incopy CS6.
The editor was complaining that when she opened the files, everything looks "milky" or "cloudy" and it takes forever to open and crashes a lot upon opening. I have a Creative Cloud subscription but it doesn't include InCopy, so I downloaded a demo and tried opening our Indesign file and here's what I've noticed:
When my application default is set to Story view, I have the same problem my editor describes. There is only one tab, and it says Story view, even though what I'm seeing is Layout view. Everything has is covered in transparent white but if you change to preview mode, it goes away and you can see the document correctly.
If I change my app preference to Layout view (with no docs open) and then open the Indesign file, it opens correctly in Layout view with the 3 tabs for the 3 views. And it looks right in Standard mode. However, if I try to select Galley view, it takes a really long time to switch (spinning beach ball) but it does work eventually. If I select a small story and check it out, then try to switch to Story view, it just hangs and I have to force quit.
This is a 64-page journal that is mostly text. All of the Incopy stories are exported to the Links folder in the dropbox, and the Links folder is on the same level as the Indesign file. We are opening the Indesign file via Incopy; we don't use assignments.
Is this a known software problem, or perhaps a plugin incompatibility? My editor obviously has the same problem and is using an older mac than I am.
    I'm using InCopy CS6 version 8.0.1.
My Mac is about 3 weeks old - it's a quad-core MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina display with 16 GB of RAM.

Anne Marie Concepcion was kind enough to look at my files, and correctly identified the problem. The problem was that we had a LOT of tracked changes in all of the stories, and it was a 64-page document with lots of stories in it. So, there were thousands of tracked changes that were just too much for Incopy to parse.
We were using tracked changes but not checking and accepting them. I didn't realize this was necessary; I thought it was just as a backup in case we wondered who changed something and when.
As Anne Marie suggested, I opened the Indesign file, checked out all the stories, and accepted all the tracked changes. Going forward, I need to make sure I accept the tracked changes from time to time, to clear out the backlog.
I reopened the file from InCopy and it worked fine; I could access all 3 views and it displayed properly. So, if anyone else has the same problem I had, try accepting your tracked changes.

  • Logic Pro X and Mavericks

For anyone thinking about upgrading to Mavericks...... (OS X 10.9)
    Firstly, don't upgrade straight away!!!!!
Only do so if you have full clone backups of your system HD. Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper! to make a clone of your current  system disk before you try and install Mavericks... and please do not rely on Time Machine backups.. as in the past, these types of backups have no provided full protection after upgrading the OS. Only a decent cloned image of your system drive, that you can easily and quickly restore from, will provide you with that safety net just in case anything goes wrong... so you can just restore from the cloned image and be back where you started from prior to the upgrade to 10.9
Wait a few days until some of the Users here and elsewhere..  have tested out the combination of LPX and the Public Release version of Mavericks.... I know it's very tempting to use the 'latest and greatest' stuff... but if you rely on your current setup in any real sense... hold off and see what the general option is in regards to compatibility with Drivers/Hardware and Software/plugins etc.... and you will save yourself a lot of potential headaches....
    The most common issues after performing a major OS X upgrade are;
    1) Driver/hardware incompatibility,...... Do not upgrade unless you know for sure your Audio/Midi interfaces have drivers with full Mavericks compatibility, ready for installation. Check with the device's Websites before even thinking about upgrading! No update or comfirmation of working fine? Don't upgrade!!
    2) 3rd party apps and plugin incompatibility. Again, wait and confirm any plugins and other apps you use/need are fully 10.9 compatibile.... before upgrading.
    3) Initial bugs.... All OS updates will have some bugs in them initially. .. Its the 'nature of the beast'. No matter how much Beta testing is done, bugs do and will slip through the cracks.... So, wait until at least the first couple of bug fixes are released to correct these enevitable issues... before making the transition.
The above is just some friendly advice from someone who has made all of these mistakes in the past (and paid for it!)  It's your choice to follow it or ignore it of course...... but history tells us that those who just charge ahead and upgrade tend to suffer for it later.. Just looking at the hundreds of posts that were made here by users with issues.. after Mountain Lion was released.. willl confirm this....
    Cheers..

How would you rate the overall feel of the OS. Smooth, any graphic glitches or halting when using the browser?
Nothing I could easily identify Pancenter... Everything seems to be running for me, as it did in ML..... I do not sense any real improvements or degradation between ML and Mav though in fairness, I haven't spent that much time with Mav other than working/testing with Logic... and as far as Logic itself is concerned.. everything is running as smoothly as ever for me.
To be honest, there is nothing new in Mav that would really make me want to go update.... and so i am glad they have made it a free update because i doubt I would have spent any money doing so.. I don't use Laptops these days so the battery saving stuff is of little interest.. and most of my Macs have stacks of RAM so the RAM compression stuff doesn't really do much for me... I've been using XtraFinder (a wonderful free app I should add if you do a lot of file moving)  for a while now so the new Tabs feature in Finder isn't something I was waiting for...
The only new feature in Mav i have really found myself using a great deal while I was testing the various Dev releases on one of my testbed systems.. is File Tagging which is great for tagging samples etc... to easily find/track stuff scattered around my various Macs here..
Do you have an iLok by any chance and, if so, are you using the new iLok Licence Manager software ?
Sorry but No. I don't use any iLok protected products these days... I used to but nowadays the only dongle protection products I use are those using Elicensor.. which btw works fine with 10.9 it seems.. Just started up VEP5 without issue...
