IMovie 6 Problems/Bugs - Frustration!

I have used iMovie for quite some time but this recent iMovie v6.0.2 has been increbidlyI have used iMovie for quite some time (at home) but this recent iMovie v6.0.2 has been incredibly disappointing. Problems to date:
- Adding simple transitions has become a nightmare. I often experience black frames (appears as a “Blip” when viewing) at the end of cross dissolve transitions. Usually when they are preceded with a still photo using the Ken Burns effect. Only fix is to start deleting and adding the content again hoping they will not appear.
- Still images appear worse then previous versions. The still images look very pixilated and fuzzy. Another strange thing for a split second before the transition starts they appear clear and crisp. So if I have a bunch of stills with transitions in between you get an odd visual of (pic) pixilated – clear – transition – clear – (pic) pixilated – clear – transition – etc. Again, the clear image before and after a transition only lasts a brief second.
- iMovie will occasionally just crash and disappear while I’m working on a project.
Anyone have any suggestions? I’m disappointed because I got my company to buy a Mac for video editing but with these issues my 5 minute video took hours to create. I liked to get this fixed to redeem the Mac’s reputation around here. It’s a MacBook Pro 17” (w/ OS X v10.4.7) and a pretty clean system no strange add-ons or anything. Thanks, for any help.
disappointing.

GOOD LUCK!
I'm having the ...... same problems.... I AM DEAD IN THE WATER!!!!!!
Cant go back to imovie5. I've neve had so many problems with iMovie.
I use it to make presentations for the company I work for. But now I am dead in the water.... can't do anything. It took almost 3 hours to get out a 10 minute DVD.
iMoive6 kept crashing, and crashing, and crashing. Then the photos would get corrupted and I would have to start over.
I tried deleting preferences, but that didn't help at all.

  • New iMovie '08 problems -- FireWire or new device issues?

Not sure if this is an iMovie '08 problem or an OS X problem. Here's the story --
Prior camcorder was a Panasonic, MiniDV format. Hooks up nicely with iMovie, via FireWire (400). I also have a WD My Book (500 GB) device to store the raw data (Event Library), which connects via FireWire (800). In the past, all three devices (Panasonic, My Book and MacBook Pro) all played nicely together.
Fast forward to now. Bought a new camcorder (problems with the Panasonic). It's a Canon ZR950 (MiniDV). With iMovie running, I first connect the WD device which is successfully mounted. I then hookup the new Canon and within a few seconds I get an error about a "device not cleanly shut down" (or words to that effect). Odd .... and when I try to connect to my new camcorder, I get a "no camera connected" error.
Rebooted, retried .... same issues. Another time I first connected the Canon and this time, iMovie successfully sees it. I go to connect the My Book and then the camcorder drops out.
So, it seems I can have only one FireWire device connected at a time, which is odd since I didn't have this issue with the old Panasonic.
    Help!

Interesting that you based your purchase on CR magazine because I too use it like a bible. However, when it comes to video cameras, I think they are way off base when not considering the editing side of video making that goes along with any camcorder. Who shoots video simply to plug it into a TV for playback?? If they were doing responsible reporting on this particular subject, they would also include computer capture and editing details in the reviews. Lots of the new format cams don't even work with Macs and the ones that do generally give lesser quality after conversion than what you can still get with tape. At least you made the right decision there!

  • How to fix iMovie 08 problems under 10.5.3

iMovie problems under Mac OS X 10.5.3 linked to color system
After updating to Mac OS X 10.5.3, users may have problems with launching iMovie. For most, iMovie refuses to opens, and the usual fix of removing the iMovie preferences, caches, and other iMovie settings files, and then relaunching the program does not appear to help. One user reinstalled the program with no luck resolving the problem:
"I have the same problem. I've tried to reinstall the imovie, but it still does not work. I have imported a lot of video in iMovie. Please help!!! "
For other users, while iMovie would start, they could not open any projects or use the program.
One user, while not initially affected by this problem, found that after changing the color calibration of his Apple Cinema display iMovie suddenly wouldnt open just as described by others; however, upon reverting to a previous color profile iMovie became functional again. This indicates the problem lies somewhere in computer's color system configuration; and changing color settings seems to have fixed the problem for all affected users.
    Fixes
Change the screen colors Go to the "Displays" system preferences and change the color output of the screen (either from thousands to millions, or vice versa) and relaunch iMovie. Somehow changing the display color depth modifies the color system so iMovie properly loads.
Calibrate the display While for some users calibrating the display resulted in the iMovie error, for others the problem was fixed by re-calibrating the display. Calibrating the display can be an involved process, but it is recommended to ensure your screen outputs the most accurate colors as possible. This option is available in the "Displays" system preferences under the "Color" tab.
    More:
Correcting the problem by changing profiles suggests a permissions problem which repairing permissions won't fix. Use the terminal command
    ls -al /Library/ColorSync/Profiles
Compare the permissions on the working and non-working profiles. If they are different, correct the non-working instance.
Everyone should read MacFixit Every Day

Another fix for iMovie launch problems We previously reported that, after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.3, users may have problems with launching iMovie. For most, iMovie refuses to opens, and the usual fix of removing the iMovie preferences, caches, and other iMovie settings files, and then relaunching the program does not appear to help. One user reinstalled the program with no luck resolving the problem.
We noted a few fixes for the issue, including changing scren colors and calibrating the display. Now some users have reported that temporarily adjusting screen resolution can allow iMovie to properly launch. The resolution can be changed back to normal after the update.
"Neither suggested trick worked for me. However I temporarily changed the resolution to 1024x768 and then launched imovie. I then went back to my native resolution of 1280x800 (white ibook) and now imovie always launches. Thanks for the tips"

  • Hello MacHeads: I downloaded Handbrake 0.9.1 for Tiger, so I can upload a homemade DVD for editing in imovie.  Problem is I can't even access Handbrake Help book, because I think my firewall settings are preventing me.  I tried turning off all my firewall

Hello MacHeads: I downloaded Handbrake 0.9.1 for Tiger, so I can upload a homemade DVD for editing in imovie.  Problem is I can't even access Handbrake Help book, because I think my firewall settings are preventing me.  I tried turning off all my firewall settings.?  IDK if I'm even doing that right.  Can anyone help out here?

You don't need Handbrake for that if it is your own DVD.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle.
a DVD is in a compresed format called mpeg2, which is standard across all DVDs. This is what is known as a 'final delivery format' and is not suitable for editing. Because is is compressed, a 4.7GB DVD can hold a two hour movie (dual layer DVDs twice that), whereas the DV stream from a video camera, which runs at about 13GB per hour, is not compressed and IS intended for editing.
In other words you have to 'reverse engineer' the DVD back to an uncompressed format in ordfer to edit it. There is a penalty for doing this in terms of slight quality loss, but it is one you can live with.
When you have your DVD as an icon on your desktop, double-click it, and it will open to reveal a TS-Folder containing a number of various files, some called VOB. These are the constituent parts of any video DVD.
When you have downloaded and installed mpegStreamclip, and purchased and installed the Apple mpeg2 plugin, open mpegStreamclip and drag the entire TS Folder into its window. Then using the various menus available to you (just explore them and you will get the hang of it) ask it to convert to DV.
That DV file, which will be many times larger than the original TS Folder, and which can a while to create (be patient - make coffee or prune the roses!) is what you can now import into iMovie for editing etc.
When you have finished doing that, you then have to turn the project back into a DVD.
mpegStreamclip can be downloaded from here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Reporting some proxy problems/bugs

Is there a way to report problems/bugs in the proxy software without having support? I believe this can be done for Java, but what about the proxy?
In our environment we are using the proxy software (currently v4.0.5, but I haven't seen these items in the release notes of the newer versions of the software) in the reverse proxy mode and have encountered what I believe may be a couple of bugs.
Possibly related to a previous poster's "Content-length mismatch" error message, it seems that some app servers respond to an If-modified-since conditional GET request incorrectly by sending a Content-length header along with the "304 not modified response" (there should be no such header in a 304 response). When proxy caching is enabled and the GZip compression filter is used, one result I have seen is the "Content-length match" error message which happens when the incorrectly included Content-length header has a non-zero value. A different result occurs when the incorrectly included Content-length header has a value of zero - the proxy response body gets truncated (completely removed).
A second issue I have seen is with the reverse proxy's handling of a POST with a trailing CR/LF which some browsers (IE) send incorrectly (there should be no such trailing CR/LF in a POST request). The proxy seems to handle the trailing CR/LF for the request/response, however if HTTP1.1 keepalive is used and the POST is followed by a GET request on the same open connection from the browser then the access log entry for the GET request will be broken across two lines.
Hopefully someone from Oracle monitoring these forums will pass these on to the proxy dev team.

Yep, I realize Safari on Windows uses Windows Internet Options to get proxy server info BUT the Windows Internet Options don't provide a place to specify the proxy login information.
As a result, when the browser contacts the proxy it usually (or should) prompt the user for the login info. Safari did the first time and I told it to save the info. Then my login info changed and rather than prompt for it again, Safari sits there and doesn't load any pages.
IE7 uses the same proxy without problems because IE uses the domain login credentials to connect to the proxy server.
Google Chrome uses the Windows Internet Options for proxy support and it prompts me to login to the proxy each time I fire it up and access a website.
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4 will prompt me for login information if the login info it has stored won't work for the proxy connection.
Opera 9.62 prompts me for the proxy login information each time I fire it up, just like Google Chrome.
Out of all of those browsers, Safari is the only one that can't use the proxy because I can't change the login information for the proxy connection.
    Peace...

    OWB 11.2.0.1 – Known Problems/bugs resolutions ?
    ==========================================
We are using OWB 11gR2, Java(TM) Platform     1.5.0_17, Oracle IDE     11.2.0.1.0.
We are finding the strange behavior in OWB Design center. Here is the situation.
    1) OWB Design Center>Databases>Defined Module> Mappings>MAP1>Mapping Editor>Expression Editor>
    Output attributes>Expression Builder
Specify the expression and press OK.
Another Expression Builder opens up with blank window. We need to specify the expression again.
    2) Same as above after opening expression Builder, if we go to another apps (eg. SQL Developer, MS Word) and come back expression Builder disappeared from the context.
We find only Expression Editor. Design Center Hangs. It is not responding to any KEYs. We need to kill the application via task manager and re-start.
Are these issues related to OWB client piece or OWB Client+Server piece?
We did not find any events reporting at DB alert Logs for such events. Do we need to set up some trace ON to record such events?
Are there any log files/tables record such events at OWB repository level to trace back?
Do we have OWB 11.2.0.1 known issues/bugs, resolutions list posted somewhere?
    Thanks in helping.

We reviewed the release notes, where it says this patch will improve performance (Bug 7359939).
We find another note in metalink (provided by our DBA team) says
Poor Performance of Mapping Validation / Generation in: OWB 11.2.0.1 + Megapatch 10270220 and OWB 11.2.0.2 [ID 1303177.1]
Are we going to face a new problem after applying this patch?
    Thanks in helping.

  • Update on imovie 5 problems

I'm starting a new thread. Sorry but I'm getting lost as to whom I'm talking to & what I've written ...who's on 1st what's on 2nd etc.
So the big news is ... On this 3rd total re-install of Tiger I've added something else to the install.
Classic install. And only Slick plugins with their updates.
It's early days but NUMBER 5 is Still alive! No audio clicks between clips, faster response from 5 . This is on a 1hour 40min project which has become the test bed. Faster response from firewire output to T.V. monitor also is noted. No crashes after 30min of working with constant changeing of effects & transitions. Haven't tried titles yet.
SO... I updated to 5.02 & Quicktime 7.02. Everthing remains stable so far. Again as before I can see no obvious benefit in these upgrades but I'm only looking at imovie so far.
So tell me, those of you with problems do you have Classic installed? Is Classic the answer? Do I "sound" desparate?
where did i put my pills.....
    Mark

Can't remember the exact wording of what you refer to-"Install Mac OS 9 Disk Driver". You cannot boot in OS9 anymore. Only Classic.
The note below the "Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed" checkbox in Disk Utility says this:
"Select this option to use this device on a computer running Mac OS 9. This option does not affect Classic."
My Mac can boot in Mac OS 9 as well as Mac OS X, which may be why I'm offered the checkbox. Perhaps the checkbox isn't offered on Macs that don't boot in 9?
It had occurred to me you may have turned on that feature for the first time. But if you can't boot in OS 9, I suppose not.
It is certainly possible that reformatting the drive might have contributed to eliminating an iMovie playback problem, I suppose. Hard to say.

  • IMovie 09 problems PLEASE help!!! so frustrating!!

iMovie was working fine before, until I started a new project and when I tried to playback, it only plays the audio in the viewer... I tried viewing in fullscreen, but it was just a black screen, with audio playback only and to make matters worse, it would not exit fullscreen playback mode. I literally had to unplug my iMac to shut it down, and it DID NOT AUTOSAVE ANYTHING! I also notice most of the menu items are greyed out. I can't add themes, transitions... nothing... I can't even select project properties.. and the project is there, at least the first few clips are there... but the hours of work after is lost. I tried editing AGAIN, and it is not saving any of the new changes I made, even if I shut it down properly. I KNOW how to use iMovie, I've read endless forums, no proposed solutions are working for me.. I am NOT upgrading to '11 PLEASE HELP! This is very frustrating!! - thanks

    Hi
Un-plugging the Mac is a dangerous action and nearly always adds small errors on the hard disk - With luck it starts again - if unlucky it doesn't and eventually need repair by pro - to be back in action.
    Just to mention it.
If this happens to me I do
    • Run Disk Util tool and Repair Permissions
    • Start Mac from DVD that came with it and now orient to Disk Util tool on this and - Repair Hard Disk
(This must be done when Mac runs on DVD or external Hard Disk - Can not do Brain Surgery on one self.)
    • Then I would re-start from Main Mac OS Hard Disk - usually named Macintosh HD - then trash the pref file/s associated to Application that behaves Badly (usually in the User Account Library / Preferences
Else see my long list of what to do
    When in Trouble
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

  • Problem With iMovie Theme - Possible Bug?

I'm trying to use the "lower third" element from the white reflection theme in my movie. The problem is that I would like to apply it to the middle of a clip.
I edit the clip but cutting out about 15 seconds off the front, then try and add the theme element. iMovie starts the theme element at the very front of the clip, which I've cut out.
I've tried splitting the video clip as well, same problem.
Anyone else running into this? Seems like a bug in iMovie.
    Mike

indeed, I can recreate your observation:
when you split a clip in a project (part I/II) .. and apply part II to a theme, it is not only part II but the whole clip (starting with part I) which gets applied to....
that's not logical in terms of user interface, nor convenient.. ok, somekind of 'bug' ...
follow Bengt's advice, to create a real, seperate, individual, non-connected, solo clip... ;))

  • FINALLY IMOVIE "08  PROBLEM FIXED!

hey! i upgraded to leopard and then soon after to ilife 08... One of the main reasons was to have the new i movie but after the ilife was successfully installed imovie would not launch, the icon would just bounce and then it would just quit. kinda frustrated n trying many troubleshooting. thought of just doing a software update and then it prompted for imovie. Updated to imovie 7.1 and then problem solved!!!

    Hi
Depends on what You mean by deleting. IF
You mean that after importing a clip - using a small part of it and then want to delete the rest.
    • That will not work ! - This is a non-destructive editor = Must keep all of imported clip
even if just a single frame is used in project.
If You mean - to delet a clip You Imported/Captured but not used any of it. And this
    is not working
THEN - You've got a problem and I would suggest first.
    • Trash iMovie pref file and re-start iMovie to force it to make a new error free one.
BTW - I never delete anything in iMovie - due to a very fatal BUG in an ancient version
and by Never deleting and especially NOT Empty Trash - IN iMovie - I stayed out of
    lot's of strange problems.
THE Trash on DeskTop and Emptying this - is without any risk as far as I know of.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Exporting iMovie project problems

So I only used mov and avi files in my project. The project is 17 minutes long. When I export it as an m4v, there are parts of it that are black screen (video doesn't show) and audio plays only. It seemed some of the avi files worked. When exporting as an mov its ALL BLACK. Only audio. Help plz
    thanks

Actually, I have been using snapz pro and have used imovie 08 to edit and publish many videos to youtube.
Yesterday, for the first time I began having the issue exporting. I did not change the way I imported or exported the clips.
I am able to export previously created video with out a problem and they work fine.
My issue is the black screen. Audio yet no video upon export. Import as .mov and the export is m4v.
I have tried to find a fix for this bug however the fixes all seem to be "band aids" requiring another step to the process of creating a movie.
If anyone can shed some light on this issue it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

  • New iMovie project problems

I've been trying to copy and paste clips from an iMovie project into a new project, but at some point in the pasting process, the little rainbow wheel pops up and begins spinning and everything just stops. So I have to force quit the program, except it won't force quit and I have to restart the iMac. I have several projects from which I'd like to extract clips to form a whole new project, but I'm frustrated as to how to go about it. Any thoughts?

Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but longer in Leopard.

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Big iMovie 09 problem wont play, edit or do anything

Hello everyone, For the past month I have been working on a ski video and its all gone badly today, i opened imovie as normal to edit it and it wont let me edit or play it, my other project files are ok, its just this one seems to be corrupt, it is a 7 minute video with music and film and the file is only 7mb!?!?! i made a trailer for it a couple of weeks ago which only lasts 30 seconds and that file size is 40mb! All the clips show up in the editor as they where when it was working fine but one thing i noticed which is unusual is when i go edit-select all, the yellow border which surrounds each individual clip is out of sync if you see what i mean. I have looked everywhere for advice, and tried the preferences way where you go to library and delete it but that did not work, I have tried installing all updates and still nothing, i dont think its an imovie problem cos my other projects work fine its just this one doesnt. The original footage is still in the same file location on my computer and theres no reason why this individual project file has developed a bug
Please if anyone has any ideas dont hesitate the type them up here,
Thank you so much in advance

  • IMovie 08 - Problems referencing audio files.

I have just finished creating a new movie in iMovie 08. The problem I am having is iMovie can't find the audio files I used as a soundtrack for the movie. These audio files are located in my iTunes library. The catch is that all of the music in my iTunes library is stored on another computer, so all of the music files are referenced.
The problem began when I had to turn off the other computer for updates, while I still had iMovie open. Mistakenly I forgot to eject the other computer as it was connected as a server to my Mac. Of course iMovie can no longer find the audio files because they are offline.
Well, when I turned the other computer back on and remounted it as a server, iMovie would no longer play the audio files in my movie. I can still access them through the music tab in iMovie, and they play perfectly.
I have even restarted iMovie and my Mac multiple times.
I really don't want to have to redo all of the music for my movie. If anyone can tell me how to "re-reference" audio files in iMovie, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

Try post on the iMovie forum is my best advice.
    Regards
