IMovie 6 SLOW in main account, normal in new account, What next?
I had this problem creep up and don't know what to do with it: iMovie6HD is intolerably slow in my main account, and this just showed up with no warning. I have a large wedding project started and need to get it done. I did the usual maintenance, .plst delete, Disk repairs, reinstalled iMovie 6.0.4, even reinstalled 10.4 and applied all updates. HD where the project is stored is internal, normal Mac format with 57G space on it. It still is terribly slow. A simple dissolve transition will take about 1-1.5 minutes to render. Deletions of transfers about a minute each. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening.
If I open the project in a new account, it renders just fine and everything seems normal, but I don't have full access to everything in iDVD that is available in my main account. Not to mention that I really don't want to have to leave my account every time I want to work on a video project from here on out. If I try to start a new project in my main account, it behaves in the same manner as the existing one...SLOW!
Is there something missing to fix this after a full install of the OS? I did an archive and install, and apparently something came over with it.
Hopefully, someone has a fix to this frustrating problem.

I don't know the answer to your problem. You appear to have a conflict somewhere in your main account that isn't in your secondary account. You might want to check the Activity Monitor app in Utilities to see what programs are running at the same time you are running iMovie in your main account, and compare that with what is running when you launch iMovie in your secondary account. If you have other activity intensive programs running, that could slow down your iMovie app. You could try quitting or disabling them and then see if iMovie functions properly.
Also, how many versions of iMovie are you running in your main account? If you are using iMovie 6.0.4, then you must have iMovie '08 as well. Are there any other versions that may be causing a conflict?

Main account missing dock, but new account works
Here's the situation...
I restarted my computer today (with no updates being installed or any real changes) because I noticed that it was a little slow.
However, when it finally rebooted, everything was impossibly slow (30-60 seconds for any action to register) and my dock was missing. On top of that, my wallpaper would occasionally flash to black and then back to the image. I've read through a ton of posts about this and apparently I'm not the only one.
I've tried killing the Dock process, deleting my preference files, and even completely reinstalling the OS. No change. My dock isn't hidden or anything like that...it's definitely something much worse. I'm on Yosemite and have been since it came out with no issues.
However, I decided to try to see what would happen with a new account. I created a new admin account and it works perfectly fine. The dock is there, it runs fast, no wallpaper issues. What possibly could be the problem with my original account. I'd be fine to start with this new account if there was a simple way to port everything over from the old account, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
Ideas on what might be causing this problem?

Problem description:
My main account no longer shows the dock and the wallpaper regularly flashes to black. Everything is very slow to respond (45-60 seconds per action). This happens in safe mode and normal. I’ve done everything I can think of including reinstalling Yosemite.
If I create a new admin account, the new account seems to function fine in both safe and normal mode, but clearly there’s a larger problem.

Logging in as guest destroyed main account home directory.
Just quietly, I'm about ready to smash every piece of Apple hardware I have to pieces.
1. I set up guest account access
2. Logged out of my account. So far so good.
3. Logged into guest account. All normal.
4. Logged out of guest account.
5. Logged into my account. "What is this I don't even..."
6. ????
7. PROFIT!
Upon logging back into the main account, I found the default desktop.
"Strange" I thought to myself, "Still, I'm sure my old home directory is there, renamed as something else, ho-ho!"
It wasn't. My entire home directory is gone. Kaput. Aether.
Good thing you had time-machine set up, you say? I didn't. I am still waiting for my order to arrive with my sweet, external backup storage. After all, what's the worst that could happen in 3 days waiting for an external hdd for time capsule, eh?
So, I've lost iTunes library, an assignment for Uni, notes and quotes for my house renovations, everything.
Does anyone want to buy an iMac, Macbook, 3GS and an Apple TV? Some items may have gnaw-marks on them, but others are in good nick and less than a year old.This may be no conciliation but you are not alone. Can't log into main account and vanished files...?
Hello forums.
Last night I was trying to get rid of some junk on my computer, emptying a lot of files in my Trash. Cleaned up my desktop... everything going smoothly. Turned off the computer.
I realized there was something fishy this morning when I turned my imac (tiger) on, logged onto my main account(admin), and my desktop was the default aqua wallpaper. My dock was still personalized and my documents were still there. Still I went ahead and created another user account under "Budiana" with admin power... so now I have total three users, the Admin (under my real name), Budiana, and my dad's.
I did fiddle around with changing the names, but not the short names... I think that might've caused the problem. I'm a bit of a noob with computers in general...
Anyway, now I can't log back into my main account. The message says "You cannot log in as ___ at this time." and the box "shakes" at me. So now I've resorted to using my second account. Looking in Finder, under Users, I see the three accounts, but none of all my files that exist under the admin. But looking at the bottom of the finder window : 168Gb available disk space, with a total of about 236Gb memory, I don't think my files are actually lost, just vanished somewhere!
I've taken a look at the "lost" home directory support document on the apple website, and tried it, but nothing seems to work. I'm also a little lost..
I've tried resetting the passwords for all accounts using the Tiger disk, but to no avail.

1) I suggest you do a total backup of your machine or at least /Users.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive. I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. ) Once created, you can run your system from the external drive. Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine. This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
The latest the hard drive enclosures support the newer serial ata drives. The drive and closure that I list supports only older parallel ata.

For cryptic comments, you can always uses the manual command which is man. For example:
man mv
# Type the letter q to quit.
I noticed that you had spaces in your filenames or directories. You need to escape them. See examples:
mac $ ls -l ~/"see it"

Do you know about tabing? Type in a few letters of a name then press the tab key. The computer will type out the rest of the name if it is unique.
How you ignore permissions.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
sudo ls
change what is in quotes to the name of your program. You need to run this from an administrator account and you will be asked for your administrator password. Type it in. the password will not show. Press return when done.
You can put yourself in root & forget about permission problems via:
sudo bash
type:
exit
when done.
Be careful. I you limit yourself to the ls & cd commands you cannot cause trouble.

When I upgraded to 10.4.9 I had the same problem but it eventually fixed it's self.
After the upgrade to 10.4.10 things just started getting screwy. It started to run really slowly, some programs stoped working ( Vienna ), other weird things happened ( My trial peiriod for The Missing Sync restarted ( awful program BTW)) The computer won't recognize the scanner in my HP all in one... etc...
But all this is happening on only my main account.. my other account every thing seems to work fine..Hello Jacob,
Log back into your normal user account:
Here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder. It's not nearly as daunting as it looks.
1. Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
• Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
• Navigate to YourHome/Library.
• Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
• Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
• Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
• Click on "apply to all"
• If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

I have been having some trouble with the main account that was created when I first got my computer. Safari is not responding properly and I can no longer drag and drop a file into a folder for it to subsequently open the folder I want to put the file in. Further more the account feel slow. I created another account to see what would happen and the response was so dramatic that I want to reset my main account or even delete it. What are the consequence of doing so in reset the account or event deleting it?

I guess as long as I know my root password and have another account with administrative privilege it should do than. I wanted to make sure also since it is not the case on a "Windows ? Machine" now, you can never delete the primary user that is.

I recently upgraded our family's mac to OS X. I thought this was the perfect time to create and use "user accounts". We had always used 1 main account. So how do I use software or applications with a lot of data like Quicken under my own user account? I wanted to be able to manage my own itunes library, iphone apps, messages. But I still really need to use the Stuff I have in Quicken essentials. I don't want to have to restart all my work done in Quicken already.
I haven't used Quicken in a while, but most applications store your files in your Documents folder. Is that where your Quicken data file is? What you do next depends on how many family members need to get at that data.
If multiple family members need to use the Quicken data file, try moving it to the Documents folder in the Shared account. That is an account that all accounts can see. It's at the same level as the other accounts. In other words, Shared is one level up from your Home account, or Hard Drive/Users/Shared.
If you're the only one allowed to see that Quicken data, move the Quicken data file from the old main account to your account, and don't leave a copy behind. You can use the Shared folder as a way station for the transfer since you won't be able to see both accounts' Documents folders at the same time (because you're not allowed to peek into other people's accounts). Or you can use another disk or server for the transfer, as long as you can get to it when logged into either account. -
So was trying to use install disk ! to solve the problem but did not want to reinstall the system because I have not backed up many of my photographs. Then the disk got stuck and would not come out so when I shut down and restarted I could not get past the gray screen. Well I was able to solve the problem and remove the disk, and finally it would load to the login screen, although it took some time to get there. Then when I log in to my main account the desktop will load but the task bar and icons will not its completely blank except for the wall paper. When I login into my guest account there is not a problem everything is there and functional. I've been researching but have had no luck on a solution. Thank you for your help.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward. -
I made my administrator account a parental control account, at the time of creating it, the system asked for my administrator password, to restart the computer, and the new account was created. When I accessed that account at the parental control menu I could see my main account on the list and i deleted the account from that list, and now i'm trying to get back to it but I'm not able to because every time i restart the computer brings me back to the account I created. I searched for help on the web and it says to go to users and select the account I want to restore but I can't do it. Please help.

Share one iMovie folder between two user accounts
Hello, I just consolidated two mac computers into one mac mini. Now both my wife and I want to share the same actual computer (new mac mini) and share media folders so we are not duplicating photo imports and movies. I figured out how to map the iTunes library and the iPhoto library to a shared folder, but cannot get how to map the 'movie' folder to a single folder for both accounts. This would be needed so we can share and work on the same iMovie projects between the two accounts. Does anyone have any suggestions?
On my Mac Pro I moved the entire library to "Macintosh HD/Shared/iTunes". Changed the Folder location in iTunes Preferences->Advanced->General to point to that location. Then in each user change the Music/iTunes folder to be an alias or link pointing to the Shared/iTunes folder. You will likely need to change the permissions on that folder to give everyone the ability to read and write. Do that via "Get Info" on the iTunes folder using Finder. I'd suggest backing everything up before you do this.

I have two accounts and for both accounts I use the same email. I cannot verify my email on my main account because of this. Help? Can I just cancel my other account to avoid confusion? I am totally stuck now.
By the sounds of it you have linked Email Accounts, if so this means that you will both recieve the majority of the same Emails, and if you do and you read them on your account (which is linked with your husbands) then they will appear to read on the both of them because they are linked. With the majority of Email providers these days they're Emails are (simplified) in the cloud you could say, meaning that if you read or delete shared Emails then it will do the same on both accounts rather than just the yours.

Safari hangs/will not open in main account; works ok in guest account
Ever since I downloaded the software update for OS X 10.5.4, Safari hangs and will not open a browser window. However, I created a guest account and Safari opens just fine in that account.

Safari (and Firefox) hang on Flash-Pages for main-account
Since Easter (when I took the last batch of upgrades) Safari and Firefox hang.
I narrowed the test down to the following web-page:
http://www.sunfleet.com
* The page does not load completely - after a little while I get this spinning ball and need to kill the hanging Safari-process.
* The same web-page works flawless on a second account.
This is what i tried so far after reading the communities:
* Checked the safari-preferences, switched off auto-fill, security settings allow loading of plug-ins.
* Executed Onyx 2.1.4 - check disk, check and repair rights, run scripts
* deinstalled Flash and reinstalled it (10.0.45.2) according to the instructions on the Adobe Support Page
* manually removed the Flash Player folders in:
Home/Library/Preferences/Macromedia
Home/Library/Caches
The error still prevails.
It would be great if someone could instruct me what to do next.
I have a backup via time-machine, but I really don't know what to restore.

In the mean-while I removed all the Internet Plugins that were registered under the main user:
real-player and move-media-player are now gone.
Still no change. I made a new trace below - I wonder, what is different on the main account compared to the other user. Could it be fonts ?

When I purchased my Mac I bought it with Apps installed, when I go to update them, it says I need to update on a different Apple account. I have only ever had one Apple account, what can I do? The Apps are iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, and Keynote. Thanks for your help. Looking forward to suggestions.

Step 3
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder may open with a file named "adoption.plist" selected. If it does, move the file to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Log out, log back in, and test.
