IMovie 6HD is freezing up with restart required to gain control of iMac G5

Sorry to be so late into the boards here, I know this issue has been dealt with before.... I simply can't find the issue that best speaks to my problem.
The life of my son is chronicled on a series of 8mm video tapes. The tapes start with VERY analog, and move into more reliably reformatted to digital as we upgraded our 8mm camera over time. Any way, I have imported these tapes into my Mac (after converting to digital). As I try to review the digitized movies, the playback stops within seconds of starting, freezes on one frame, while the playhead moves on as if the movie is playing in the background. I don't think it is really playing inthe background, as the iMac is frozen solid iMovie can't be Force Quit, a shutdown is required.
Important to note: this glitch started with iMovie 4, the importing software. I upgraded to 6HD to try to conquer the problem, without success.
The digitized clips are kept on a WD 500GB USB2 external drive. It was reformatted to HFS+ (journaled) before starting the digitizing. I watched each movie clip play as it was being input/recorded onto the harddrive. There is nothing else on the HD but the movie clips.
I am baffled. I run iMovie 6HD v.6.0.2, OSX 10.4.6 on my 2GHz 20" iMac w/1GB Ram.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help!
Tim

I bought an intermediate digital 8mm cancorder on eBay for $200 or so. A Sony DCR-TRV340. Sony's built-in analog-digital converter let me put my analog tapes into camera, and provided me with digital output. Once I had digital output from a camera, I had digital input for the iMovie App. I no longer needed the vastly poor stand-alone analog-digital converters in the marketplace (Dazzle, for one), that were freezing the iMovie program from the get-go. Although I received NO replies to my question, I managed to solve this one with a little catching-up technological-wise.

  • IPhone 6 plus screen freezes intermittently - forced restart required

I'm on an iPhone 6 plus with 128gb running 8.1.2.
It seems that intermittently (recently mostly in iMessage; which hasn't been behaving since 8 & yosemite) my phone screen freezes.
By freeze, I mean it is visible. It will even paralax on the home screen so some CPU/GPU stuff is working, I can even click and double-click the home button, but touching the screen elicits no response what so ever.
Recently a new version of the problem has only started in iMessage where I am getting some results, but never anywhere close to the target I actually touch.
    Is this a known issue?
Is there a solution, that is known to work?
Is this a hardware problem or software problem?
I have removed all non-apple keyboards because it seemed to always start when I was typing someplace (regardless of keyboard used).
    Suggestions? Help!
    Thanx!

I've been having similar issues with iOS 8.1.3 on my six plus. It will freeze exactly as you describe--home button works, parallax works, but touching the screen elicits no response. I can also double-press the home button to bring up multi-task view, and I can scroll through the open apps, but I can neither change to another app nor swipe apps up to close them. The freezing occurs most often within the Messages and Email apps, but I've had it happen in Safari, Settings, Calendar, etc. When it happens, its usually a second or two after I open one of the apps in question. Once it freezes, I have to press the lock button and then unlock it, and then everything works fine again for a period. Restarting the phone doesn't really help, as it will randomly freeze again when using one of the aforementioned apps. Apple support recommended I try backing up to iTunes and restoring the phone using the Set up as New option. It seems to have helped a little. Maybe its my imagination, but it doesn't seem to be freezing nearly as often or as long (knocks on wood). But it did not alleviate the problem entirely.

This recently happened to me.  I am a novice, but it seemed like that project got corrupted some how.
    I deleted it.
Went to time machine and picked it up again when I knew it was working ok.
I lost a few hours of work, but not the entire project.
Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

All of a sudden I keep getting message that my computer must be restarted and it freezes. I restart it and within minutes it happens again. This is a 27 inch iMac with latest system and software. Any ideas of what is wrong and how to fix it?

10.7.5 is not the latest system, 10.8.3 is. However your message sounds like  a Kernel Panic, does the message look similar to About "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) messages? If so, then if you can get the machine to restart normally then please post the Kernel Panic Report which you can find by following directions in How to log a kernel panic. Please post back with the KP log, and we can take a look. However if the machine continues to not restart then my guess is a hardware failure suck as a hard disk or failed RAM in which case you should take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for repair.

Look in Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and see if you have any runaway processes using a lot of %CPU.
I would also strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If it reports errors you can Google them or post them here.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

  • Lightroom 2.6 Freezes - Folders with apostrophes the culprit

    Hi All,
Thought you might be interested... anyone who may be having severe and frustrating problems with Lightroom freezing the operating system, requiring a hard reset...
I upgraded to 2.6 and had constant freezes - as soon as I tried to import or move my mouse to the left or right of the screen, my system would lock up and I would have to reset the PC. After a series of restarts and much frustration I remembered that in an earlier version of Lightroom (can't remember which now) where you had folders in your library that contained apostrophes in the names, Lightroom had major problems. It was resolved however with some sort of subsequent release or fix. Indeed, subsequently I had two folders using apostrophes prior to upgrading to 2.6 and had no issues with Lightroom whatsoever.
I renamed my folders removing those apostrophes and Lightroom is no longer locking the whole system and seems to be running fine. Of course I had to point Lightroom to the 'missing folders' once I'd done that. I'm running Vista 64 bit with 12 GBs RAM by the way.
Just thought it might help anyone having the same kind of problems...

I hope I am not speaking too soon.
I had written you this detailed response because I was having the exact same problem, LR2.6 freezing after 5-50 minutes of use.  I have a very similar system i7 920, 12GB DDR3 RAM, x64 Windows 7.  I thought it was my RAM so I had taken 4 sticks out and was running off of just 2.  i tried to re-import my 50k image library and it froze at 11000 images.  I swapped for 2 other sticks of RAM and did the import and again froze around 11000 images.  I was thinking memory leak for sure.  Then I read your post.  I put all the memory back in and re-ran the import (expecting it to freeze around 40k images) but it did NOT.  It has been running fine for 3 days now.  So basically all I can figure I did was re-arrange the RAM because I did not put it back in the same order as it originally was.  This doesnt make sense to me.  I was watching resource monitor as the import occurred and LR grew from 500mb RAM to 2.5GB of ram but never went beyond that.
Previously I ran Memtest86+ for 24hrs so im pretty sure my RAM is OK.
Have you had any more freezes?  have you found a solution?

  • Questions about using iMovie HD (6.0.4) with a new, as yet undecided, camcorder

    Hi,
I want to keep on using iMovie HD (6.0.4) with whatever new camcorder I am getting. iMovie HD accepts mpeg-4 video so any camcorder that uses that format should work, shouldn't it? I will (probably) be bringing the video in via USB, as I don't think any new camcorders have Firewire ports anymore but I'd love to know about any that do. The plan is to find the files on the camcorder and drag and drop or otherwise transfer them into my MacBook Pro. (See my last question for the Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter problem.)
I've read that some?/all? Canon camcorders can record in both AVCHD and mpeg-4 so I'm looking into them. Any other brands I should check out? Using AVCHD looks like it will be too much trouble so I'm ruling those out, unless you have better ideas.
I've heard that Sony uses their own proprietary "wrapper" for mpeg-4 files their camcorders create. I think there is software out there, possibly for free, that will simply "re-wrap" them, not re-ecode them, so that they may be more easily used. Will Sony camcorders be a problem?
Will file sizes be a problem? I've read so much on AVCHD and other formats that maybe this doesn't apply but I've read that one hour of video can be 60 gb? I don't remember what context that was in.
Can I use mpeg-2 files? From what I have read, I don't think I can. If converting them would make them work, would it take a long time to do that and would file sizes be huge?
I have been using a 21 year old Sony DCR-TRV 9 mini DV cam. This past weekend the LCD screen died. I can still use the viewfinder but that's going to be challenging, so I am shopping for an inexpensive new camcorder. Less than $500, somewhere in the $100-$300 range is preferred but no toys.... HD seems to be out of reach with most starting around $500 but if you recommend any under $500, I'd love to know about them. SD should be fine otherwise. I prefer some sort of card for storage storage rather than a DVD or hard drive. The more popular format, the better.
Any advice is welcome. I do want to stay with iMovie HD though. I have tried iMovie 11 and don't like it. HD suits me fine.
One last question: Since my MacBook Pro doesn't have a Firewire port, I have found it simpler to use my old Powerbook that does.  I then transfer the files over to the MacBook Pro to edit them. I have tried using a Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter so I could use the MBP but it didn't work well with video. The question is: is there a better way to transfer the video files onto the MBP from whatever new camcorder I get than USB? Are there good Thunderbolt connectors that will work well with camcorders?
    Many thanks.
    Cheers,
    John L

I heartily support your decision to continue to use iMovie 6! I use nothing else!
imovie 6 was originally designed to import DV video streams from tape via firewire. However, in practise it can do much more. Useful sources of information:
    iMovie 6 Help:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iMovie_HD_6_Getting_Started.pdf
    from which this is excerpt:
iMovie HD can transfer, or import,
video in many video formats and from many different
types of camcorders, including DV camcorders (including those that support
widescreen) and high definition (HDV) camcorders. In most cases, iMovie HD can
automatically recognize and import the video you’re using, so you don’t have to pay
    attention to video formats.
In this step, you will import your own video into your iMovie project. If you have a
camcorder with a FireWire connection, follow the instructions to connect your
camcorder and import the video using the capture controls in iMovie HD. If you have
another type of digital video device or have footage in a file on your computer, see the
    instructions on page 13.
To import video from a camcorder:
    1
Set the camcorder to VTR mode (some camcorders call this Play or VCR) and turn it on,
    if necessary.
    2
Connect your camcorder to your computer using a FireWire cable.
This MaciLife PDF is also good:
    http://www.macilife.com/PDF/iMovie_HD_6_Chapter.pdf
There is also a video tutorial here (with links to others):
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=654013474999069361#
The excerpt I quoted from the Apple link is less informative than it could be. It also succesfully imports video from my Fuji FinePix S4500 (actually a digital still camera) via USB2, as well from my Sony video camera via firewire!
Can I use mpeg-2 files? From what I have read, I don't think I can. If converting them would make them work, would it take a long time to do that and would file sizes be huge?
No. mpeg2 is the final compressed standard format of a DVD (and will be created by iDVD). To use that in iMovie 6 requires you 'reverse engineer' the file back to a DV stream, with commensurate loss of quality. If you really want to do that, post back for instructions.
I have no experience with Thunderbolt so can't help you there, but hopefully Karsten will see this thread and chime in with his usual excellent advice!

Both Chrome and Finder seemed to freeze, so I restarted the computer. When the restart finished, I was in recovery mode. How do I get back to my regular login screen?
It starts up and asks for a language. After English, it goes to the OS X Utilities screen. I have gone to disk utility and verified the disks. They both say they are okay. If I click repair, it comes back with an error saying "Live file system repair is not supported." I just want my computer back to normal! Please help! I am still in Mavericks if it matters.

Do you have a backup? If so, in the Recovery Partition go to Disk Utility/Erase, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), click Option GUID, and erase the disk. Then re-install the OS. Reboot and use Setup Assistant to recover your data.

  • IMovie HD Keeps Freezing Up

I'm currently using a MacBookPro with iMovie HD.
I have imported approx 50 minutes of video clips (.dv) from a Cannon video camera via firewire, with the camera daisy chained through an external FW hard-drive. I was able to import the videos, but after all were downloaded the "letterboxing" application started running. This worked for about half the clips then locked up. After stopping the application and shutting down/re-starting I was able to start view the clips and start building and editing my project. Only using the "letterboxed" clips, this will work for a some time but then will freeze up and give me the multicolored beach ball. At that point I have to force quit which prevents me from even opening iMovie unitl I shut down the entire computer and start over.
The firewire dirve = Fantom Drives, 120 GB, firewire.
Any help with correcting this issue is much appreciated.

    Hello,
    Welcome to the discussions.
    A question:
Is the external drive Mac-formatted? You will have all kinds of problems with iMovie if it is not.
    Some comments:
Some people have reported problems with daisy-chaining Canons. Some of their camcorders like to be directly connected to Macs in order to import video footage. Does your MacBook have 2 Firewire ports? If so, use one for the external drive and one for the camcorder.
You do know that the iMovie app needs to be on your computer's drive? But the project can be on the external.
Lastly, have you tried deleting iMovie's preference file? With iMovie closed, go to Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist. Trash this plist file. iMovie will create a new one when you reopen it.
Relaunch iMovie and see if the problems are resolved.

  • IMovie 11 and quality loss with Sony Handycam DCR-SX33e

    Hi folks,
I have a Sony Handycam DCR-SX33e (good one!) and iMovie '11 recognizes it, it's able to import movies directly from the cam, creates events, etc... BUT the quality of the movies within iMovie environment is very very poor (i.e. pixels big like a house!) BUT if I look at the movies using QT (from iMovie events, "reveal in Finder" on a movie), the quality is perfect.
Still, if I make a project and finalize it, the exported movies are horribles.
I notice that the cam works with a DV-PAL resolution (720x576), but iMovie works with wide resolutions.
How can I work with iMovie without losing quality on my movies? Can QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X help?
    Thank you!
    Bye

    Geriatra,
Don't judge the imported footage in iMovie11 on the clip area and the monitor area. They are not a true representation of the finalized project. What's the best way to judge if the footage is imported properly is to look at the actual footage itself by clicking the clip and then select reveal in finder. Play the footage and see if it matches the original. If you do not want iMovie to optimize the footage, you can deselect this feature and it will simply either copy or move your original footage.
Personally, I don't know if iMovie 6HD helps because your Mac still needs to read MPEG-2 properly which you said are not having any success. Over here on my Macbook, I have no problems working with MPEG-2 converted files and with iMovie 11. Quality is superb. Albeit, I converted those MPEG-2 files using my faster Quad Core Vista 64 machine and posted them later on my RAID network server before being made available for the Mac.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMovie'08 uploaded to YouTube with Jingles caused copyright violation notice

I just uploaded an IMovie '08 project to YouTube with my own video content from my camcorder, and audio solely from IMovie Jingles. I received a 3rd party content notification from YouTube stating that the audio content is owned by an entity called "Dance All Day." Somebody please tell me why, when I tried to avoid copyright entanglements by using only Apple's IMovie jingles, am I getting 3rd party use violation notice from YouTube? Who the heck is "Dance all Day" and why are they claiming ownership of Apple IMovie "jingles"? Who owns the rights to IMovie "jingles?"

I've had similar issues with these so-called copyright violations, simply when using Apple provided jingles in iMovie. Others here have also reported this. In my case it was a different entity that was claiming ownership of the jingles. After a while, the notices stopped appearing. YouTube place ads on the videos when there is a perceived violation, but these can be removed temporarily by clicking on the x icon. From memory, there was also a note stating that no action was required by the user, but ads would appear.
