IMovie 6HD - multiple video formats

Can anyone help me? I have DV from one event on 2 cameras.
The first is standard format DV from a Canon ZR70, the second is HD (16x9) from a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I would like to use both sources in a single movie. The 5D Mk II video runs continuously over 3 separate 4GB cards of a performance, the ZR70 video is candid, back stage etc that I would like to start with and work in at various points. Is there any way to use both?

first of all, I would 'egalize' both sources.. esp. the material from that SD mk II wouldn't 'fit' into iM...-
use the recommended converter tool *Mpeg Streamclip* to convert the HiDef into dv-stream.
convert the standard material from the ZR into dv-stream and add 'borders' to make it suitable for a widescreen project..
if you want to create a HiDef project, choose Apple Intermediate as Codec and 'blow up' the standard footage to 1920pix resolution.. (=that doesn't 'gain' the quality, but makes the material usable in a HiDef project)
import resulting dv-streams/AIC movs into a DV/wide project or HD-project ..
just a matter of taste: I like with those 'documentaries' to make the performance in shining colors, and the backstage material b/w.. iMHD6 has such an effect.

  • Multiple video formats in one feed?

My podcast (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=348713189) has videos formatted for Apple TV, but that means subscribers can't load it on their iPods. Is there a way to host multiple video formats in one feed?
    Feed url = http://buzz.snow.com/media/lindseyisepic.xml

The 'enclosures' in a feed don't all have to be the same format, so you could certainly mix differently formatted episodes.
But note that different versions have to appear as different episodes (even if it's the same content) - you can't have two 'enclosure' tags within one 'item' tag - the second will be ignored.
Another point is that if you do two versions of every episode you are forcing subscribers to download both versions, so there is a lot of redundant downloading going on. It might be better to make two different podcasts, one with the Apple TV versions and one with the iPod version: note that if you do this the titles must be different (so you could add the media type in the title) and of course the second version must be submitted as a new podcast. Once done, iPod users wouldn't have to download all the Apple TV files and vice versa.

how do you decide which structures to use?
    Trial and error.
I wish I had a better answer for you, but that pretty much encapsulates it. There is some, but not much, good wisdom out there, but it takes a significant amount of experience to be able to recognize it. The software development community if currently afflicted with a case of copy-and-paste-itis. And the prognosis is poor.
The solution is to be brutal to yourself and others. Focus on what you need and ignore everything else. Remember that other people have their own needs and methods and they might not be applicable to you. Apple, for example, can hire thousands of programmers, set them to coding for six months, pick the best results, and have the end-users spend their own time and monety to test it. If you don't have Apple's resources and power, think twice about adopting Apple's approach. And I am talking from a macro to a micro perspective. Apple's sample and boilerplate code is just junk. Don't assume you can't do better. You can.
Unfortunately, all this takes time and practice. You can read popular books, but never assume that anyone knows more than you do. Maybe they do and maybe they don't. It takes time to figure that out. Just do your best, ignore the naysayers, and doubt other people even more than you doubt yourself.

  • Maintain multiple video formats as versions

I have a large Aperture library of personal photos and videos from a history of digital cameras going back over 10 years.  The videos are in a number of formats ranging from AVI, MPEG, MP4 and MOV.
I have had issues syncing videos to our iPhones/iPad through iTunes using the Aperture library as the sync source due to the video format not being supported (there are a number of discussions on this forum that talk about this error).  From what I can gather, iTunes will only sync certain supported video formats, requiring the videos to be converted accordingly. The majority of my videos fall into this category.
I want to try keep all my videos in their raw format and was thinking maybe I can create iTunes friendly versions of the videos (mp4 or m4v etc) and store them in Aperture as versions of the orginal videos.  I have looked at a few articles that mention videos can be externally edited (http://aperture.maccreate.com/2011/03/14/setting-mpeg-streamclip-as-your-externa l-video-editor-aperture-3/) and saved back into Aperture as versions, however I have not been able to get this to work correctly and am usually prompted upon saving to pick a folder location for the new version.  I'm not sure how this works in a managed Aperture library.
Has anyone had any experience with this or can offer any solutions?
I was considering writing a plugin or AppleScript to go through my library and do this automatically, however I'm not too sure how feasible the option of hosting multiple video files linked back to one master is.
    Thoughts or suggestions welcome.

To alleviate confusion, a "version" in Aperture world is a master image that has had changes applied to it in Aperture. Aperture gives you a thumbnail or preview of the master using the changes contained in the version file.
What you want to do cannot be done by using versions, because video is not edited in Aperture. That is why each time you edit it with an outside editor, it is asking to import as a new Master, and thus, where you would like to store it. In a managed  library, master images are stored in the Aperture library along with everything else. In a referenced library, the masters are stored wherever you like and only versions ("changes") and preview files are stored in the library.
The answer to your question is to use stacks. Import all your converted videos and stack them with the originals. Use the "friendly" version as the stack pick. It should be seen by other programs. When you want that original "unfriendly" file, its in the stack. This will double all your videos though...you won't have versions, you will have two masters.
There is no need to write an applescript. View all your picturs, then use the magnifying glass tool in the top right corner of the browser view. Click on "Add rule", go to file type, and pick movies.  Or, conversley, you could display everything that is not an image. Then you can see all your videos and drag them to an album. You could also make a smart album that contains all your videos by adding the same rule. I highlighted my movies in purple using the metadata editor. Much faster to spot them.
My personal point of view is that doubling your videos will make your library much larger unless you are using referenced masters. If you are using a managed library, you could make the original, unsharable videos referenced once they are stacked. Aperture would know where they are, but not keep them in the library. If you are unfamiliar with referenced masters, I would either learn about them or use the method below.
I don't see much point in even keeping videos in formats that cannot be shared, edited, or viewed by the programs you want, unless its solely for organizational purposes or you are mixing work and life. I would just convert all the movies, leave the originals in an untouched folder, then import the converted ones I am actually going to share and watch into Aperture.  But I can easily imagine reasons to use the stacks method as well.
Good luck, hope that all made sense.

  • Multiple video format, 1 iTunes entry

I have searched for this, and , can't seem t find an answer.
I have multiple apple devices, and, like to rip my Blu-ray Discs to watch on these devices. I have an Apple TV , iPad, iPad mini and iPod touch.
This makes for a messy iTunes library though. Because (using the movie batman as an example) in my iTunes library, I have the same movie, multiple times because I encoded it for several devices. It will be listen something like this:
    Batman (iPad)
    Batman (AppleTV)
    Batman (iPod Touch)
So, my question is, is there a particular naming convention I can use where I can rip 3 different formats and  all three versions will roll up into one entry in iTunes where iTunes and my devices will be smart enough to use the correct file in different situations??
Any amount of help I can get on this would be greatly appreciated :)
Hope everyone had (is having) a great holiday :)

Me too, all my movies are on Ext HDD with an alias pointing to them from the movies folder in my home directory but in itunes i do not know how to add any of them.
The movies are in avi format DivX and Xvid.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Edit...
Ok got the files added but it copies them to my musc folder, is there a way to keep them in the original place on my ext hdd?

  • How Do I Get Multiple Video Formats to One Size?

I am new to Premiere....so, thanks for the help!
I have several files from different cameras submitted by individuals. They have different resolutions and it is wreaking havoc on my output.
My previous software automatically adjusted the video to fit the screen.
How do I get Premiere to do that and at the best quality?
Thank you for taking the time to take a look.
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
In Edit > Prefs > General, there is a checkbox for "Auto Scale to Frame Size". Enable that, and any clips imported after that change will automatically be scaled to fill the current frame size. For clips already imported prior to change, you can right-click and manually choose Scale to Frame on clips in your Sequence.
Ideally, you should figure out what format you want to deliver, and start from there. For instance, if the final product will be on DVD, then 720x480 is the size to work with and you would start with a DV NTSC preset and scale clips to fit. Not a good idea to scale everything UP, as you will lose quality, so not recommending full 1920x1080 HD if your sources are all smaller.
Also pay attention to FRAME RATE. You can mix them, but decide which one is most prevalent and that may be the one to use, depends though. If you can give examples of what you have to work with, and where it is going (DVD, YouTube, etc.) then you may get more specific tips

  • PE 12 Sluggish using multiple video formats

    Hi,
Been using Premiere Elements 12 for about a year. Usually not too many issues, and when I've had them, someone here in the forum is nice enough to help me out. Been creating an online interview project with a friend for YouTube. Lately, even with no budget, we're getting a tad more sophisticated technically, I'm using video files from various sources that aren't in the same format. I'm having problems with video freezing up while audio is running fine. For the episode I finished last night, there are files from a Canon DSLR in .mov format 1920x1080 24fps, from my Samsung S4 in .mp4 format 1920x1080 23fps (can that be right?), some from an old Alesis Videotrack (for shaky handheld) in .mp4 format 640x480 30fps, and files from Skype in .mp4 format 1280x720 29fps. (Evaer makes an app that records vid & audio to two separate files from both computers during a Skype conversation.Very cool) The PE 12 file is, I believe, 720 24fps that I'm importing all this to. So I'm just wondering if all this mixing and matching is the root of my problem. End up rendering during editing constantly but it doesn't last that long. When rendered down to a final file, it's just fine playing in Windows Media Player. Should I be converting the files to the same format somehow before importing to PE? The final video is 1280x720, 24 fps.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated,
    George

You can't. It is either HD or SD. When using SD you lose the advantage of HD.

  • Project and Render settings using multiple video formats

Hello someone amazing who is willing to help!
    I shoot with 2 quadcopters - DJI Phantom Vision 2 + (1080p, 30fps, square) and the DJI Inspire 1 (4Kp, 30fps, square).
    I also shoot with a Canon Vixia HF11 (1080i, 30fps,square)
I'm getting the WORST results when I render out my files. I'd like to be able to finish with a file size that is manageable on the web with superior quality (like everyone else in the world). My final video is only about 1:15 in length and I'm getting a very blocky/artifacty result.
    Currently using:
    H.264
    1920:1080
    Progressive
    Square 1.0
    NTSC
    Main 4.1
    Render at Maximum Depth: checked
    VBR 2 pass
    Target 20Mbps
    Max 20Mbps
    Key Frame Distance: 1
    Use Maximum Render Quality: checked
    Use Frame Blending: Checked
    Use Previews: Checked

You can't. It is either HD or SD. When using SD you lose the advantage of HD.

    Hello,
Adobe stopped supporting flash for android since ICS. You may still be able to download the latest (old) flash player "at your own risk" from Adobe archived flash player versions:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
Please read the disclaimer at the end as it is not advised to install unsupported flash versions.
As for video streaming, there are lot of apps for that and it's just a matter of your preference.
    Hope that helps
