IMovie 7.01 and encoded movies

I have already posted questions arround problems with 7.0 iMovie and the video quality when publishing to the Gallery on .Mac.
However, now I have installed the patch (7.01) I am keen to see if this patch fixes alot of my encoded video quality issues.
I unpublished the existing videos from my Gallery, and figured if I re-publish iMovie will re-encode and the re-publish my video content.
It appears this is not the case. When I tell iMovie to re-publish and inform iMovie of the movie file size it just tries copy the original (and awful quality) movie back to the gallery without re-encoding.
Does anyone know how I can overcome this, and were iMovie stores the H.264 encoded files so I can delete them and force iMovie to re-encode everything fresh please?
many thanks
Gary

  • How to burn a dvd created in iMovie with OS Maverics - why is it in MP4 format and not .MOV?

I have created a movie in iMovie, shared it and put it in a burn folder on my desktop, then tried to burn it. It seemed to work (the hard disc was spinning and computer told me when it was finished) but when i tried to play it on my Macbook Pro (which is where I created it) it won't play. It is in MP4 format. iMovie used to create movies in .Mov format. Is this the reason it won't play and what can i do about it?

    Hi
    A. making a .mp4 file then putting it onto a DVD (via Finder/DeskTop) results in a DATA-DVD - which can not be played by any (to my knowledge) Standard DVD-Player.
But if inserted into a window-PC and using VLC-player - I GUESS that it will play just fine.
    B. To be played in a Standard DVD-Player You need to do a VIDEO-DVD and to do this You need a DVD-Authoring program (it is a MUST)
    C. Things that use to go wrong are:
    - Using cheap brands of DVD discs as Memorex, NoName etc - I only use Verbatim
    - Using DVD+/-RW - usually do not work, DVD+R usually works BUT not on older DVD-players - I only use DVD-R
    - BURN SPEED - as faster as more BURN ERRORS (WORSE) - in iDVD - Best IS NOT BEST AT ALL - I never go faster than x4 - most often I use x2
    Reg Authoring programs:
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.
    Free solutions:
Burn - a free alternative from Internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
Gives a fairly good resulting Video-DVD
Free DVD Creator.app - free from Apple Store
(very simple - Quality ?? not sure - looked problematic reg. Interlacing)

How to burn an iMovie to DVD without losing quality?  I have iMovie 10.0.5 and iMac 10.9.4 mountain lion. I do not have iDVD. After iMovie goes through the encoding process, quality is horrible. How can I fix this problem? I have tried the apps BURN and DVD Creator for MAC. I need to finish this DVD asap and becoming more and more frustrated. Why would Apple give us iMovie and not provide us an app to burn it to a DVD and / or take away the iDVD?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • IMove and Quicktime movies.

Is there a way to put QuickTime movies into iMovie but have the QuickTime images remain the same size?
I really want to make a dvd of all of my favorite quicktime stuff, but I believe that iMovie will fill the screen with the iMovie image and make it look "blockie/pixelized".
Maybe I can't do what I want to do.

I know what you mean, and you'll usually be right, depending on the quality of the .mov file. (Note that you still won't be able to increase quality from what you already have; if it already looks pixelated and blocky on your computer, it won't get any better -- but you're right that you can avoid making it worse.)
The way I'd do this is with QuickTime Pro. (I don't know of a way to do it without that; there may or may not be some free utility out there to do it.)
Open the movie in QuickTime (Pro) Player.
Create a 640x480 black image, pict or png format. (If you don't have an easy way to do that, let me know, and I'll toss one on the web for you.) Open that in QuickTime Player.
Copy that black frame to the clipboard (still in QT Player). Go to your movie's window, select-all (command a), and you want to do a scaled paste. I think this is command-shift-v, but I don't remember exactly which modifier keys. Hold down command-shift and look for "Paste Scaled" or "Add Scaled" or something in the Edit menu. If it's not there, release the menu, hold down a different modifier combination, and try the Edit menu again. (The possible modifier keys are command, option, shift, and control.) The key word is "Scaled".
Now you will have the black frame pasted over the entire movie. You want it the other way around, so find the properties window -- I think it's command-j. Select the track with the movie and change the layer until it appears on top. (IIRC, lower layer numbers are on top, so you actually want to drop it down, like to -2, to bring it to the top.) Then reposition it if necessary -- I'm guessing it'll be in the upper left-hand corner, and you probably want it centered. If it won't let you drag it, adjust the numbers for the offset (not the frame size) until it's centered. (That's also a good way to get it more precise anyway. If your source is 320x240, to center it in a 640x480 frame, you'll want it offset 160 horizontally and 120 vertically.)
Verify everything's placed where you want it and plays the way you want it. Then export to DV -- and since iMovie only seems to like real .dv files, not DV-encoded .movs, be sure you export it to a straight DV file. When it's done, you can just drag that .dv file onto your iMovie project and wait for it to import.
IMovie displays as 720x480, I believe, so things normally look like they're stretched horizontally while you're working in iMovie. Do a test run, though, and if the final physical DVD you produce still looks stretched horizontally on an actual TV and set-top DVD player, then I may have double-second-guessed iMovie, and you may have to re-do the entire process with a 720x480 black image instead of 640x480.
If you need an example and can point me to one of the .movs you want to use on the web, I can go ahead and do one so you can see what it looks like.

  • I have a an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes. All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem.

I have an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes.
All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem. The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it  just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
    Can anyone please help me.

    The mystery remains....
Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.
    Thanks

  • Transfer VHS and Hi8 movies into imovie

I have a bunch of old Hi8 and VHS movies that I want to transfer into imovie so that I have them in digital format for the future. I know you need a device that you plug your analog player into (like your VCR or camcorder) and then that device will go to the mac via usb2 or firewire. Can anyone recommend a few devices that will work seamlessly with imovie. Preferably inexpensive?

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Can I create black and white movies using the iMovie app for the iPad?

This may sound strange, but I actually got to the stage of regretting ACR several versions back, because you ended up with nothing to do in Photoshop.  When you think how far ACR has come since then, you can see how Lightroom (with the same RAW conversion engine and features) is all most photographers need.  Adding ACR as a filter inside Photoshop was a master stroke.  I wonder who thought of it?  Russell Brown would be a good bet, but Chris Cox has made it clear on more than one occassion, that us lay folk dramatically underestimate what goes into coding, intergrating, and proving new features.
BTW  That was not a straight line for some joker lauch into tails of woe about all the bugs that make it into final release versions.

  • How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts?

How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts? Additionally, what does 'File' 'Finalize Project' do?

Instead of Share to Media Browser, what happens if you try Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large size) and save it to the Desktop?
If that fails try Share Menu > Export using QuickTime...
Then pick Movie to QuickTime Movie, then click on Options... which is just to the right of Export
Under the Video section click on Settings...
Then in the pulldown menu at the top, titled Compression Type: Choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Then click OK. And click OK again, and save it to the desktop. Once the .mov file is created, you can import that into iDVD and most likely it will work in Wondershare Creator if you prefer to use that instead.

  • Trying to move iMovie '11 project and event to another drive

    Hello,
I'm trying to move some iMovie '11 projects and their associated events to another hard drive, as my start up drive is full.  I currently have projects and events on my startup drive and also on an secondary internal hard drive.  That drive along with several others, shows up in my Event Library list.  I have tried clicking on my project both with the Command key and without, to drag it to another hard drive that is listed in my Event Library.  The hard drive does not "light up" and I don't get the option to "move project or move project and events."  I've tried a reboot of the application and the computer.  No luck.  Is something wrong with my iMovie application?  Or is there something else I can try?
    Thanks!
    Catherine

Here is a writeup on how to do this.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4141
One thing to notice is that there is an error in iMovie help. It says to drag the icon for the project to the icon for the external drive in the Event library. This is wrong. You drag the project icon to the icon for the external drive in the Project Library. For the Events, you drag the icon for the Event to the icon for the external drive in the Event Library.

    As  to iPhoto
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • How to encode movies in 720p HD or 1080p Full HD with Dolby 5.1 ?

I want to find out if anyone knows exactly what's the name of the program that the iTunes Store uses to encode movies in 720p HD with Dolby 5.1 surround sound playback? I have some DVD's and some DivX files and I want to convert them to the same file type and resolution as the new movies available in iTunes in 720p HD with Dolby 5.1. Also is it available on Windows or just Mac, if so does it work with the old G4 power PC processor? Is it possible to encode the movies at a higher resolution of 1080p? If so how??? Does iMovie HD capable of doing this?
Any help with the name of the program and the settings I should use to encode in the same manner as the iTunes Store would be apprecciate it....
