IMovie 8 and camcorder compatibility

I'm running 10.5.8   ----  Intel Core 2 Duo  2.4Ghz   ------   on an 3 year old Macbook.
I need a new digital camcorder to USE WITH iMovie 8 that is under $500.   I've checked the Panasonic, Sony, and Canon websites and it is very difficult to figure out which of their camcorders will work with my set up since they have different recording formats.
So, I'm needing assistance on this ----  might there be a website that has this kind of thing all sorted out for the newer cameras out there?
Thank you.

Thanks.......  looks like that list is a year old.
I'm looking at the newer Canon VIXIA cameras, but realize I'd have to use a video converter like AUNSOFT.
Is this a fairly streamlined process?   Or is it a hassle I should avoid?

  • Mini Spec and Camcorder compatability

    Hi,
I am about to take the plunge into the Mac world primarily for DVD editing/burning and have two queries:
    1) Does anyone know if my Panasonic NV-DX100 camcorder (1998 vintage)is compatible via FireWire?
    2) Is the current Mac Mini 1.66GHz spec adequate for Final Cut Express HD v3.5 either as bought or with a RAM upgrade?
Thanks, Tom (looking to escape from the non-Mac world)

    Hi Tom.
The main thing about the iMac is that it is a powerful, complete machine. You don't have to start buying upgrades etc.
It has a beautiful, large flat panel screen and a large Hard Drive (at least 160GB).
The DVD burner is faster 8X instead of 4X.
Also the Mini only has one Firewire port. You need at least 2 - one for the camera and another for the FW Hard Drive that you will almost certainly be buying very soon.
The Mini really was built as a novelty to show how small and how cheaply apple could make a Mac.
It works very well but cannot compete with bigger machines which you really need for video editing.
In short, though you may save a bit in the short term if you get one, you will probably be kicking yourself later on.
It's like the Morris Mini car. You could take 5 people from Land's End to John o' Groats in one in a day - but the journey would not be the most comfortable one!
Regarding your marital situation, mine is the opposite. I suffer from severe fiscal-clenching of the buttocks.(Less polite people call me "tight-a**ed").

  • Imovie '06 and '08 compatibility

    hi all,
can anyone tell me if video imported in iMovie '06 which is altered/edited using '06 be used in iMovie '08? are the imported video files interoperable with both programs? what file extention is video when imported into '06? and '08? If I used '06 to alter my video, will '08 accept the changes or will some obscure error occur?
Also, I have made a video in '08, and after making the video I split the event that contained the clips. Now there is a little yellow triangle with an '!' mark in each frame-clip in the project window. Any one know how to remedy this annoying and seemingly useless feature?
    Vincenso

im08 merely imports the original source clips from im6 (im6 never actually altered the clips anyway). The most likely format for your clips in im6 was .dv in which case that is how they will be imported to im08.

  • Final Cut Express HD and Camcorder compatibility HELP Ughhhhhhhh!!!!

I just don't get it. Appple has a section that shows which camcorders are compatible with Final Cut HD Express, but there mostly old camcorders and not many HD ones at that. Then you do read some of these review sites on camcorders and they tell you they have been using Final Cut express with such and such a camcorder that is not on the APPLE list!! Whats more frustrating are these long discussions/threads/message boards on the net in terms of whats compatible and what isn't with HD express. Can we have a comprehensive list somewhere. Their's obviusly a huge problem and disconnnect here since there are literally thousands of pages and threads and messages dealing with this, and I'm adding to it. Any help will be appreciatiated. Thank you

    OIC my mistake...
You only wanted a list of the cameras YOU were interested in...
I forgot you (and HD cameras) should be the only importance to Apple.
Yeah forget about alllllllllll the other SD mini-dv cams, etc.
The reason the discussions is flooded with questions is two reasons:
1.) No one knows how to search.
2.) They know they have to ask/answer a question to take part in these discussions here....
Search or browse for existing answers before you ask a question. Someone else may have asked your question — it may save you some time.
Stay on topic. Apple's discussion forums are here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, don't add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
That Apple rumor you saw on another website.
Discussions of Apple policies or procedures.
    Speculations/rumors about unannounced products.

Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. • IMovie and Camcorder Choice

I need to produce a 30-45 minute video of myself presenting a topic to adults for a job interview. I have iMovie08, and my MacBook Pro, but no camcorder. The final product can be a VHS, CD-Rom or DVD according to my potential employer. Does anyone have any ideas about how I might make this video with as little outlay of funds as possible? I am willing to buy a camcorder but don't want to buy too much more than I need, and I would like to be able to edit the worst parts of my presentation out with my computer before I send it to be judged. Thanks for any ideas about compatibility and function.

The final product can be a VHS, CD-Rom or DVD
Put it on a DVD, VHS is sooo 1980s.
Canon makes excellent equipment and their technical support people always seem Macintosh savvy (They were very familiar with iMovie).

I use my Canon with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. (and occasionally with iMovie 08)
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners.

Are you holding down the "d" key, all by itself, just after the system shuts down for a restart?
And how long did you hold it down?
I held mine down for about 40-50 seconds. Then I lookat at my routers WAN light and it was flickering so I let up on the d key.
If that does not work then maybe there is something wrong with your MBP. Is that the reason you want to run this test, something isn't right with your unit?

  • I am using imovie 09 and when I try to play the scenes from my hd camcorder video freezes then voice freezes and bar keeps running to the end.  Does anyone know how to fix this? PLEASE!

I am using imovie 09 and when I try to play the scenes from my hd camcorder the video freezes then audio freezes and the play bar keeps going with no video or audio.  How Can I fix this???  PLEASE HELP!

Up front I would say the short answer is "no"... but the long answer is "sort of".
Replicators are part of the Fractal "arsenal" and Motion definitely has those, but I think you would be very hard pressed to come anywhere near the type of fractal imaging as in the Electric Sheep example.
I was able to squeeze the following out of Motion (the base element is a simple square), but by the time it got this far, Motion wouldn't play faster than about 1 frame every 5 or so seconds. At a certain point, you end up having to render movie files in order to see it in action (and that took Motion about 8 minutes for a 12 second project [09 iMac i7].) [If you're interested, I posted a short video of these here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6Fe_ydfAss. The segments are longer than 12 seconds each because these are designed to loop @12 seconds and each one was looped more than once.]
[You asked the question on the 4th - I "finished" this on the 7th... (I admit to several "false starts")]
If you have a faster mac than mine, you might be able to do more than this... and you really don't have access to the Maths that fractal apps have, so depending on your creativity for devising the "root" motif element you may (or may not) be disappointed in what Motion has to offer (it *will* try your patience!) If you would like to experiment anyway, I will explain some of the techniques I used for the above (which are, at best, rudimentary!) Once you get the basics down, you should be able to take off in your own directions.

  • IMovie 2008 and JVC Everio HD Camcorder

I recently purchased a brand new iMac and a JVC Everio HD Camcorder. The first time I tried to import the videos taken from my JVC, iMovie recognized it. Now it seems that it does not. Everytime I connect the camcorder to the iMac only iPhoto opens. When I go to "File" "Import from camera" the internal iMac camera opens but nothing with the Everio Camcorder.
    What is wrong?

The same happens to us. The JVC HD camcorder had worked fine importing when I dragged the .TOD movie files in to iMovie 06. Now,I try to drag the same file type to iMovie 08 -- and it doesn't even recognize the file.
But iMovie 06 recognizes 1440 CBR files when importing via firewire. Maybe if you film in CBR format, iMovie 08 will recognize he file? Here's a link to the JVC's site for a tutorial on the CBR format: http://media2.jvc.com/camcorder/macHD.mov
Hmmm, but what about my .TOD files in iMovie 08?????? That's the problem! Thanks for any and all help!

  • Panasonic SD700 Camcorder compatibility with iMovieHD

I am considering the purchase of a Panasonic SD700 Camcorder not just for the reported image quality but because it has sockets for an external mike and headset. My only remaining doubt is its compatibility with iMovieHD. Is is simply a case of transferring the SD card from the camcorder to my Mac or does the camcorder output have to be converted into an iMovieHD-compatible format? Help would be appreciated. Regards.

There have been a number of responses to my initial query but none seems to address it directly. I have both iMovie 09 and iMovie HD. The Panasonic model in which I am interested is the SD700 which only uses SD cards. I want to buy the most compatible camera possible to use with either of the above applications. I am trying to avoid having to do conversions to another format before I can edit. I am a newcomer to video & camcorders trying to avoid an expensive purchasing error. Further guidance would be appreciated and thanks to those who have contributed so far. Victor

  • 3.1 library not compatible with iMovie '09 and iDVD 7.0.4 ???

I took the Aperture upgrade last night to 3.1 and Aperture itself appears to be running ok, although I haven't tested a ton of the functionality yet. What I was working on was wrapping up a wedding I shot and am putting the final touches on the movies and DVD for my clients.
However, since the upgrade neither iMovie '09 nor iDVD 7.0.4 can access my Aperture library. They seem to think they can see it, but all that happens in the wheel sits and spins. I though maybe this was due tot he current size of my Aperture library (170 gig, about 40k images) but after letting iMovie sit and spin for about 6 hours I don't think that is the problem.
Looks like there is a compatibility bug here.
    iDVD screenshot: http://www.vensland.com/wp-content/gallery/blog-photographs/screen-shot-2010-10- 24-at-10-59-11-pm.png
    iMovie screenshot: http://www.vensland.com/wp-content/gallery/blog-photographs/screen-shot-2010-10- 24-at-11-04-52-pm.png

To Tony: This is a known bug in Aperture 3.1 as earlier posts show. I do have the same bug. I went into few steps for solving it, but didn't find a working way. What I did:
I created a new empty library and imported few photos. This library works, iLife shows the library contents in iPhoto, iMovie and so on.
I exported few projects from my main library and created from them a new library. This library is about 30 GB and it works too.
I exported then my whole library to a new library. This tooks me over 6 hours because the library was around 300 GB with 25k photos. This library still does not show in iLife media browser.
I did a repair permissions and check database consistency on this library too. No change.
As the smaller library with only 30 GB in size does function as expected, it seems it has to do with the larger size of the second or main library or there is something wrong in there.

  • IMovies import from camcorder

Camcorder correctly connected but the program does not start to import into imovies tried for hours and do not understand why. Same Camera had been used before successfully and I have changed nothing in the settings. it asks for event name but thats it. Sometimes I cannot get the camera to be recognised.

I have solved it the imovie 11 does not recognise these old cameras so I used Imovie 9 and can now carry on with tranfering old films and burn DVDs. to answer your question I use a Firewire and I found IMOVIE 9 was still on my MAC so solved the problem thanks for trying to help, I had a job to get back to you and only just now found your email.

  • Camcorder compatibility w/ Mac

I've read conflicting info about camcorder compatibility with macs. Some say that using a firewall there is no issue uploading from any brand of minidvd camcorders. Others say this is not true, swear up and down that there are compatibility problems w/ Canon models vs. other brands. I want to purchase a Canon ZR900, ZR930 or ZR950 as these have had good reviews but am reluctant to do so until this question is answered.
    Thank you!

The firewall in Mac OS X has absolutely no bearing on camcorder compatibility. The camcorder does not use the network.
With regard to mini-DVD camcorders, they record their video in MPEG2 format, which suffers two problems: 1.) it's a highly-compressed lossy format that's really poor for editing (the video they shoot is not intended to be edited, only played back as is); 2.) recompressing the MPEG2 to create a new movie makes things worse.
Since you're asking about the Canon ZR series, and they are MiniDV and not mini-DVD camcorders, that may not be important to you.
Canon models don't have any particular problems. It's true that they use what OS X calls the FireWire basic profile (IEEE-1394 raw video) rather than IEEE-1394 DV, but the problem there is only that the OS X FireWire driver drops frames (rare, but it happens) sometimes with the basic profile. You generally won't notice, but it can be annoying (you can run Linux on your Mac and it works just fine, it's not a hardware issue). Just make sure that if you use Final Cut you turn off the option to terminate if a frame is lost (and there's a bug in FC where a dropped frame causes it to lose VTR control of the camcorder).
That said I have a Canon ZR mini-DV camcorder (ZR500 -- standard definition), and it's a nice little camera. It's performance in low-light is not all that great, but in well-lit situations the video is quite good. Were I to buy a new camcorder, I'd go with a high-definition model that does 1080i, even if I were outputting to DVD because the sharpness of the video pops even there. However, though I am fond of the MiniDV cassettes as a backup medium, there's some huge advantages to SD and HD storage for camcorders (for example, no low-frequency hum from the DV tape mechanism), but AVCHD is really tough (takes a lot out of your computer) to work with.

  • Lost iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD when hard drive crashed.

I owned my iMac since 2007 and my first OS was 10.4.  As far back then, my iMac came with iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD already installed.  Since 2011, I had OS 10.6 on my iMac.  Two weekends ago, my hard drive crashed and lost many applications, including iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD.  I still had a copy of 10.6 on a disc and reinstalled it and even updated it to the version I had before my HD crashed.  I notice that iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD are not in my computer anymore.
I visited the download section on the Apple website and have found versions of iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD that would be compatable with OS 10.6.8, but for some reason I can't install them.  I was able to install iPhoto, but can't open it.  I can't even install iDVD.  I haven't tried to install iMovie.
Is there any way I can install these applications I lost?  I realize purchasing a new copy of iLife is one option, but the version that is out now is not compatable with OS 10.6.8.

I visited the download section on the Apple website and have found versions of iMovie, iPhoto and iDVD that would be compatable with OS 10.6.8, but for some reason I can't install them.
These are not applications. They are updaters for the applications.
You will have got a disk with your Mac that had the applications on it. You can reinstall from that.

  • Caught between Imovie 09 and FCE

I am caught in between these two programs.
I am a beginner and only need the basic editing tools available in Imovie, yet I have an AVHD camcorder and want to import footage at maximum resolution. I have been importing at full resolution and exporting to Quicktime. There is a significant reduction in quality in the final movie (even when played back on the computer).
Does anyone know if '09 will be updated any time soon to allow for full HD editing?
Are there are editing programs for mac that are simple to use but allow for lossless editing?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

So here we are, more than half way through '10 and we're still stuck not having a lossless means for editing without mortgaging the house?
I've got iMovie '06 and I've been trying to use it on Snow Leopard (10.6.4) and I'm getting crashes which detract from my happy life.
Do we have any indications that Apple might be fixing this in the near future?
I've got video of my daughter's HS graduation that is PRECIOUS and I don't want to be dropping bits left and right.
    Thanks for everyone's time.

  • HT4864 I must install Snow Leopard to use iCloud fully. Is IMovie 6 and iDVD vs 7/0/4 compatible with Snow Leopard?

I must install Snow Leopard to use iCloud fully. Is IMovie 6 and iDVD vs 7.0/4 compatible with Snow Leopard?

You were misinformed. iCloud requires 10.7.2 or later. Snow Leopard is required to upgrade to either Lion or Mountain Lion. See the following for the upgrade path and information to determine if your computer can be upgraded.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
