IMovie 8 newbie question regarding importing HD movies

I don't have a HD DVD recorder at the moment, but when I do get one I want to know that all the movies I've imported onto my Mac contain the full HD information and 5.1 sound. I'm paranoid that I will import movies from the camera and then delete them off the camera only to find out later on that I have ended up with a load of non-HD imports.
When I import my HD movies from my handycam into IMovie 8, is it saving all of this information by default?
Also, how can I tell whether a clip in iMovie 8 is a HD clip or not?

Two ways.
Right click on the clip (in either the events pane or the project pane).
Select "Show in Finder".
Right click in the file in the finder. Select Get Info.
Alternatively, click on the file in the finder to play it in Quicktime Player. Select Window/Show Movie Inspector.

New person's question: regarding importing media into premiere cs4

Hi folks, please excuse the level of my ignorance but I really need a bit of clarification. If i import video from a tape captured from my Canon A1, hd 30 frames progressive or if I import into a project video movie which was rendered 1920x1080 progressive f4v is there any difference in quality?
In other words is digital information captured in the native format via adobe capture window ( set to hd ) of better "quality" then importing a movie that was 1st rendered from a different project in the hd f4v format?
I am embarished to ask this question as I keep thinking that zeros and ones captured in Hd 1920x1080 adobe flash movie can not degrade if imported into a project vs digital info from a tape but maybe I am missing something that is essential in the work flow process.
It is easy for me to output sections of my training films as f4v and store them on my hard drive. Later I can import "blocks" of edited material into another training project but I am afraid that I might be degrading the process with this work flow.
Sorry to ask such a newbie question but I really don't want to make a fundamental mistake that will have a negative effect down the road.

Capturing is just a transfer of 0's and 1's, nothing gets changed, so no quality loss. What was recorded is transferred.
Rendering on the other hand means a change from format A to B. That always implies a loss of quality. How severe depends on the formats used.

Newbie question about imported video

Hi,
I am trying to embed a movie into the timeline. I want it to
play once and then have the page redirect to another page afterward
(I am trying to create a splash screen). I don't want the movie
player which is why I have chosen to embed it.
I can import the movie and embed it fine but it just loops
forever and I can't seem to get it to redirect.
Can anyone help with this one?

Exporting question regarding imported you tube clips

Anyone have suggestions what is the optimal output setting to export my movie if I'm just creating a collage of youtube videos? My issue is some of the clips are a little old, but they look great in the imovie preview window. Once I've exported full size, they look too grainy. Anything I can do to fix this?

Generally speaking make your output size no larger than the smallest source video, however this can be quite impractical if only a small percentage of your source material is of a lower resolution. You also need to bear in mind how your export will be viewed, if for example it's going to be viewed on a tv screen, exporting at low resolutions will only serve to degrade your higher resolution content to the same quality as that of your low quality content, when your tv upscales it to fit the screen.
You might consider framing low quality source material before importing into im09.

Basic question about importing/exporting movies

Hi all! I'm a complete novice with Flash (and moviemaking). I used it many years ago, but haven't used it in a long, long time. Flash may not even be the program I need... so let me know if that's the case.
Basically, I shot a video with my camera. It is a .mov file. I imported it into iMovie and edited it. Then I exported it as a .mov file. I want to embed the video into a web page. As far as I can tell, in Dreamweaver it needs to be a .swf file. But I don't think I can export an swf file from iMovie. So I read online I could convert my file using Flash.
I followed directions I found online, but though it seems to be working... it's not. Here's what I did:
I opened a new file in Flash. I used the default type. I clicked on the timeline and went to File > Import > Import movie (using all the default choices).
I broused to find the .mov file. I clicked Next.
I chose a skin that was the default (Minimal Flat Custom Color Play Back See CounterV...). Clicked Next. Clicked Finish.
A little movie player is now on my Flash screen.
I started adding frames (F5). I see frames are added in the timeline.
But... when I go to play the movie... it DOES play... but the screen is black.
I see I CAN export it as a swf file... but since I can't see the movie when I play it, I'm guessing it's not working (the tutorial I was using said I should be able to see it at this point).
So... am I going about this the completely wrong way? Why is it not working? Thanks for helping me out.

PS I'm using Flash Professional CC v. 13.0.0.759 on an iMac

open your mov file in adobe media encoder. save to flv or f4v.
open flash pro, add an flvplayback component to the stage and assign its source (using a relative, not absolute path) to be your flv or f4v. test.
when you have that working you can publish a swf and html. use the html code to embed the swf in your web page.
p.s. you'll need to upload the flv/f4v, the swf the html file that contains the embedding code AND, if you use an flvplayback skin, that skin.

Newbie questions regarding HD editing

I've used Premiere Pro since the 1.5 days, but now I have CS 4 (4.1) and I want to edit HD video.
I have a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder that I have set to record using AVC HD 16M (FH) with X.V. Color.
My questions are:
1) Is there a preset for CS4 that will control my camera, as there is for my old DCR-TRV240? I can't find one built-in the program.
2) When I first enter CS4 to start a new project and it asks me for the Sequence Presets, which one should I use for the given camera and video format I listed above? Under the AVCHD menu there are submenues for 1080i, 1080p and 720i. Then there are further choices for 1080i25 (50i) with and without Anamorphic, 1080i30 (60i) with and without Anamorphic, the same holds true for the 1080p 24,25 and 30 presets!
I am totally confused as to which preset to choose to get the best quality Blu-Ray (for myself) and standard DVD (for relatives without Blu-Ray capability) output.
3) Is it safe to assume that when I output the edited video to standard DVD the viewers of this disc will see the black bars above and below the picture? Do I need to take anything else into consideration when burning to both formats with the same source material?
Sorry for the ridiculously basic questions, but I don't know where else to ask.

I have a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder that I have set to record using AVC HD 16M (FH) with X.V. Color.
The first place to start would be the camera's manual. It should break down these settings to the exact specs. that the settings will yield. This info is probably most easily accessed from that manual, as the Sony site is likely to not go into enough detail to help someone, unless they know your camera and exactly what the "16M (F)" translates to. That info will go a long way towards setting the Preset for your Sequence.
As for Device Control, in the Capture module, you should have that, provided the OS recognizes the camera, when connected via FW. If you are not connecting via FW, then you will likely have to Copy/Transfer the data, probably with supplied Sony software, and then Import from your computer's HDD, into PrPro.
There is a current thread where Dan Isaacs discusses the HD to SD and then to DVD-Video. That would make good reading.
The "black bars" will be determined by whether the user's TV is only 4:3, and/or how their player handles 16:9 footage. You will have 16:9 footage, so it gets down to the user's equipment and the setup of that equipment.

Java Newbie Question - the import statement

I have a problem for importing a java .class in my project. This latter is named "Tedetis_New". Inside it, I created a "src" folder containing all the source code of the application. I import a jar file inside the parent directory of "src" (i.e. at the root of the project). Inside this jar archive, two classes (.class files) are not placed inside a package (default package according to eclipse), let's name one toto.class. So when I want to import toto.class from a file inside the src directory I simply do "import toto.class" but this statement doesn't work ! I don't manage to import my toto.class so ... what do you propose for this ?

Newbie question about importing articles

Sorry for the most basic of questions but I cant seem to find the answer. If I am importing an Indesign document that has more than one page into a single edition folio do I have to break out each page and import one at a time or will DPS allow me to import say, 5 pages at a time? Does each page have to be its own document with appropriate links or can I bring in multiple pages and common links from the same document? Thanks in advance- I suspect it is one at a time but that can become cumbersome for a long article, especially when you are working with master pages and would like to adjust common elements without having multiple InDesign docs.

Each article can be as many pages as you want it to be. You can import as
many articles as you want as long as they're in the right folders.

Newb Question regarding Same InDesign CS4 file used on two different computers.

Probably been answered 1,000 times or is common knowledge, but I could not get it narrowed down using the search feature.
I would like to take an InDesign CS4 file ( a book) created on my imac, and work on it while away on a macbook pro with identical InDesign CS4 software. I will only be changing layout and some text, but will not be modifying anything that is a link other than re-sizing.
After doing this, will I be able to put the updated file into my imac and be ready to go, or am I playing with fire? If I might do more harm than good, I will not do it. It's just that I have a big project due and I have to be out of town for 3 days and would like to work on it if I can while I'm gone.

If you only copy the InDesign file then yes, preflight will alert you to the missing links. Just ignore it, or package the file and transfer the links, too.
Better yet, get yourself a membership to Dropbox. With Dropbox installed on both computers you can keep the entire job (up to 2 GB) in one folder and the files will sync to Dropbox’s servers, which will then sync to all computers sharing that folder. Open InDesign file on Mac 1, make changes, close file. Open file on Mac 2, make changes, close file. Open file on Mac 1 and the changes will be there. Best of all, you can go to Dropbox’s website and access a file’s history. This means you can go back to previous version of the file if you need to.
I add a folder to my Dropbox folder for any current job. When I’m done I move the files out and archive them.

Newbie questions regarding pulling data from hyperion planning cube w/OBIEE

Hello there,
we've recently implemented Essbase and are currently pumping it full of revenue/expense data from out source systems to calculate NOI. This data is stored in a staging table at the detail level where it is sourced into Hyperion and aggregated. We also have OBIEE 10g (plan to upgrade to 11g later this year) and we would like to connect to and report out of Essase. Our ultimate goal is to be able to report on the NOI numbers in the planning cube but have the ability to drill down to the detail level which is not stored in Essbase. We've heard it is possible, albeit not native for OBIEE 10g to do this. We've also heard that it is not best practice to use our transactional cube for this type of reporting but to actually create a second "reporting cube".
What are best practices for getting this NOI data out of Hyperion and merging it with our relational detail reporting? Can we somehow export the data from the cube and store it in a relational database? Should we clone the cube (if even possible) and configure both it and our relational source in the BI repository and setup all drill-throughs there?
Any info is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

i have found information on how to use ODI to extract data for the cube. What I'm really trying to find out though is best practices for reporting off summary level data in Essbase with the ability to drill-through to the detail.
We've heard reporting off the same cube that users are writing back and transacting on is bad. Do we need to make a "reporting cube" and then bring that in OBIEE and merge it with a relational source or is it better to extract the data from Essbase into flat files and join it to detail tables in our relational source?

Question about Imported AVI movies from Digital Cameras

I use a Canon "Ixus" series digital camera., the video clips on this camera are AVI (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions).,
My problem is saving edits i do to these video clips in the in the same original format when opening them in QT, unlike photos Qt makes you save AS instead of saving modifications to the original file.
Again, if Qt does not allow you to save the edits to the clip itself but rather asks you what you want to save it as, and i can not find the same exact QT which is "AVI" (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions)., then what is the correct format to avoid any loss in quality?
Can anyone advise?

I understand - however, video is a horizontal format; when you rotate your file 90 degrees either the 640 vertical dimension must shrink to 480 pixels which will leave black borders on each side of the image or you expand the 480 horizontal dimension of your clip to 640 pixels and you crop of the top and bottom of your image.

Newbie question regarding the width between 2 strokes.

Imagine a circle made with two strokes that are about 20pt apart. How would I go about changing this width yet keep the shape intact.

You are talking about the preview bounds of the shape. Select each stroke in the Appearance panel and in the Stroke panel next to Align Stroke, click the appropriate button, hold mouse over each button to see the names. I guess you want to set the alignment for the inner stroke to Outside and the outer stroke to Inside. However this will shrink the preview boundaries of the shape with half the width of the current strokes. To compensate you may need to change the size of the shape and offset of the second stroke with the same amount. Then when you chage the with of the two strokes the shape will stay the same and only the 20pt gap will shrink.

How to import 150 .mov (quicktime) clips into iMovie '11?

Newbie to iMovie and having some trouble. My wedding videographer took off with my wedding footage (and the footage of 100 other couples.) Through the police and some of my own detective work, I was able to seize my wedding footage and have it on an external hard drive. I have already spent thousands of dollars trying to recoup my footage and now that I finally have it, I don't have the extra money to have it made into an actual movie/dvd.
All of the more than 150 clips are in .mov format and I am unable to import them into iMovie that way. Any ideas on how to convert that many HD clips into a file that iMovie will recognize without losing video quality & sound?

I did it! I realized after 2 hours of it not working, that I was doing it 1 step wrong. I was trying to import the actual file with all the clips, rather than just the clips themselves... Silly error, and the import of .mov files into iMovie was seemelss.. Quality is great and didn't take long. Thanks again.
